art-punks.......2005-08-26
THIS album is most notable for one of the band's saving graces--a jam cut with a TRUE art rock band,(nah, just call them an ART band--forget the ROCK--nothing POP about them) Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, "led" by non-leader Roger Miller, he of Mission of Burma, Magnetic Fields Disrupted, and Destroy All Monster fame.
Roger and his younger brothers, the twins Ben & Larry, have done some astounding things with the form that used to be rock, but that's beside the story.
The Space Negros are the story. They've also done their most listenable album, their musak album, which is conceptually deeper than anyone realizes. The song choice is the key. They choice exceptionally good but OBSCURE psychedelic songs to cover. Now think it over, in the context of Lounge, exotica...and the growing interest in the new sub-genre of Lounge: Spy music.
MMM. Contemplate. Maybe they didn't know the can o worms they opened. Maybe they did.
ALL their albums are of interest. This one is my 2nd fave.
Pick one up used for $7. Surely you can risk that.
I think you'll like it.
Or, given the variety of stuff, you shd like SOME of it.
And, if yr put off by the name of the band, don't be. I'm sure it's well-intended. I've actually known a few spaced A-a people who have, in silly moments, referred to themself as a "Space Negro", honestly, and done so with a certain amount of off-center pride, the same pride with which I declared myself to be a "Space Jew"! Join the Space People of the Universe!
