5 out of 5 stars Impeccable English Style.......2007-07-13

If you favor blend, balance, pitch, and all the other parameters of the English traditional choral style, you'll be very impressed with the Tallis Scholars' refined presentation. the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27

In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John Dunstable and William Byrd. I personally consider him the second-greatest Renaissance composer after Palestrina, but I'm not dogmatic about it. I love the music of Josquin, Victoria, and Byrd almost as much. Let's just say that, if you're interested in immersing yourself in the work of a single Renaissance composer, you can't do much better than Tallis.

These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.

The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars Hmmm.......2007-04-10

I rarely listen to Metallica, but I do like everything they did up until the Black Album. I know call me a hyprocrite right now and throw the review out the window. This boxset is done well, and I had no problem with the sound on the dvd. The problem I had is the way the cds and dvds are presented. The case is terriable, and the cds just fall out and might get scratched. The booklet is a a complete waste; To review the orignal booklet, you can on the second dvd. Its great material, but the price is a little steep. I did buy it used, but the price I paid for it was probably what the asking price should be.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!!.......2007-03-31

I live with regrets now after hearing this music. I was never a really big fan of theirs and owned none of their music. I am, however, a big 'live' music fan of all types. If it's good live, I like the band!

I thought this set was FANTASTIC! My regrets are that I never went to see them live when I had the chances. Big mistake.

This is truly a great musical set. For those true Metallica fans, good for you for being there before, during and after these concerts. You've seen one of the greatest Rock and Roll bands to walk the earth. Truly a great buy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I was there !!!!.......2007-02-01

What can you say when your favorite band issues a record of the concert they played at your city ?? there's no way to be objective and neutral, this is for me the best live record ever made, in the peak of Metallica's career, with an audience (Mexico City) that waited for 15 years to see Metallica live so you can feel the people extasis on each track.

Some of you may not be aware that Metallica was supposed to play only 2 dates in Mexico City but they sold out both concerts in 2 hours (50,000 tickets), so they cancelled Hawaii and stayed to play 3 more nights. I attended two of the nights and saw people outside the arena trading jewelry and watches for a ticket, absolutely crazy. Metallica changed the track list every night, and this record has the best pieces of each of the five concerts. A must to have for any Metalli-fan.

The only negative is that the boxset only contains audio from Mexico City, not a single video.

Man, I felt myself nostalgic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-01-22

I was looking for a collection of live, older Metallica songs, and you can't beat this collection. The performances on the CDs are great and they sound really good when you play them as you should....LOUD!

The performances on the DVD are also really good and I recommend that you use a good surround sound system to take advantage of the music and mayhem that Metallica unleashes on stage.

Don't think twice about it, just get it.

5 out of 5 stars Descropción del producto........2007-01-11

    Album Description

It's impossible to sum up this monster project in a couple paragraphs, but we'll give it a shot. The nutshell version: The project includes 10 short animated films featuring the appealingly disturbed Space Monkey character of Dalek's creation, plus a 48 page book. Accompanying these shorts is all new original music from HAZE XXL. Let us explain further......

Dalek, aka James Marshall, is one of the most exciting artists from the burgeoning Brooklyn art scene. Graduating with a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, he furthered honed his skills assisting Takashi Murakami. For those not familiar with Dalek, his three books of collected work shows a precision influenced by the computer graphic explosion, yet by performing these feats by hand.

HAZE XXL, aka Tom Hazelmyer, comes from the background of late 70's/early 80's Minneapolis Punk/Hardcore scene. He spun his garage-band roots into Halo of Flies, founded the indie label Amphetamine Reptile Records and has been running the Ox-Op gallery since 2003.

To insure that the music for "A Purge of Dissidents" (APOD) was anything but the usual sterile avant garde soundtracks that typically accompany most films offered in the fine art world, Hazelmyer enlisted a cadre of underground movers and shakers that included such folks as The Melvins, Grant Hart (Husker Du), and Kenny Greenbaum (of Detroit's infamous Princess Dragon Mouth/Mog Stunt Team 555) to create some twisted aural backdrops that are as disturbed as Dalek's infamous Space Monkey itself. He then took some of the 30 finished instrumentals, and had various friends put their own spin on them by including vocals by Craig Finn (Hold Steady), David Yow (Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid), Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion), and Grant Hart (Husker Du). The APOD soundtrack includes a track from each of these sessions, but they are also being released as a series of 7" singles in conjunction with the entire project.

Aside from various art/gallery shows taking place over the next year, "A Purge Of Dissidents" will be on the road, shown at screenings prior to Melvins shows on their upcoming national tour this fall.

Bif Nake's Purge does not seem to stick to any genre, neither do any of her other works. Collectively, Bif Naked's sound has amazing similarities to No Doubt's Gwen Stefani as well as similar rock artists such as Good Charlotte. This album certainly explores the genres of alternative, pop, punk, as well as dance. Purge also has a sound consistent to Bif Naked's earlier title I Bificus. Tracks like "Tango Shoes" have a very catchy sound, similar to something No Doubt or Good Charlotte would put out. Later into the album, the genre changes however to dance and alternative. Purge probably a stands as one of Bif Naked's strongest titles to date. It's all about originality and versitility, which she does fairly well.

    4 out of 5 stars On Purge.......2006-08-08

Personaly I think that Superbeautifulmonster is her best album but this album shows her transformation from the earlier stuff to now. Favorite track "I Love Myself Today", now that's undeniable rock! This album is also hard to find a record stores for some reason which is why I had to go online for it.

5 out of 5 stars Bif Naked only gets better!.......2005-11-28

I bought this album first & was not disappointed. I think some of her songs kinda have to grow on some, but for the most part you can find alot to enjoy in each of her songs. She's a great singer with a good range and alot of spunk! The lyrics are good, many will find much to relate to in her words, and the music is awesome. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys female rock/alternative/punk rockers!

5 out of 5 stars work by true pros.......2003-04-30

I must say that few albums have impressed me lately as much as this one. The tunes are professional and well done, but most importantly this band slides effortlessly from one genre to another and does them all suberbly! From the refreshing pop of "Tango Shoes" to "I Love Myself Today", which literally roars out of the gate like a top fuel dragster, to the different and unique edginess of "October Song", the album changes pace seemlessly. One moment you're listening to the driving rock of "I Love Myself...." and the next moment your listening to the touching and beautifully done ballad "Stolen Sidewalk". There are many bands that do one genre very well, and even more bands that fail at mixing them. Bands this flexible and talented are both rare and a treat!

    5 out of 5 stars Bif-tacular.......2003-03-09

This is simply stupendous grrl garage rock. Smart, searing lyrics, edgy instrumentation, and bouncy, hooks-a-plenty melodies. Avril is a manufactured Bif wanna-be. This is the real stuff.

This enormous live box set is a necessity for the hardcore Metallifan, though casual fans (if Metallica has any casual fans) might be scared off. It contains material up to and including the self-titled "black" album, including concert favorites "Creeping Death" and "Seek & Destroy," as well as classics like "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," and "Fade to Black." There are also a couple of ripping-fast solos from Jason Newsted and Kirk Hammett, and covers of "Last Caress," "Am I Evil?" and "Stone Cold Crazy." The videos are from a 1992 San Diego concert and a 1989 stop on the Damaged Justice tour in Seattle; both are guaranteed to turn any fan who hasn't had the considerable pleasure of hearing this seminal metal band live green with envy. Pricey, but very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams

Noting Metallica's recent radio and MTV-friendly format, I purchased a used copy of this box set in order to dramatically illustrate the nosedive that has become of Metallica's popularity among their original fans. Driving to the top of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge here in Tampa, I flung 'Live $hit, Binge & Purge' into the shipping channel...a 200 foot drop. Longtime fans can rest assured that one of traitor Metallica's new box sets is now 'sleeping with the fishes'.

    4 out of 5 stars purged.......2006-03-29

I bought this box set way back in the day when it was a new release. I must say I really enjoyed it. This was the last good thing this band ever put out. I've since sold this boxset along with everything else Metallica related that I owned. Once they started suing their fans and putting out below par horses*** I quickly became a nonfan. Lars is a dousche as is Hetfield.

5 out of 5 stars There's only one Metallica, and this is their best........2005-11-23

Sometimes only Metallica will do, and this is their best. Every great song, played to the hilt live in Mexico City on the CD's and a two DVD set recorded here in the States. When you need something and only Metallica will do, and when you need it as hard as it comes, this is the album for you. I love this box set. I'm on my second one. I let the first one get scratched up in the car, and I discovered I couldn't live without it. If you love Metallica, you'll feel the same way. Enjoy.

This box set is incredible. So much metal crammed on to 3 CDs abd 2 DVDs. About 8 hours of head banging, kick a$$ metal. It is amazing how you can actually feel the adreniline and excitment like you were actually there. It also makes we want to start my own mosh pit. This album is so awesome that I could go on forver but before I start rambling I will go through the songs.

1 Enter Sandman-great opener, this song kicks more a$$ live then studio(in my opion)10/10
2 Creeping Sandman-Great Song from Ride the Lighting the version is definitly not as good as the studio but nonetheless a heavy rocker 9/10

5 Sad but True- Better in the studio but the guitar solo is so much better live they ruined the chorus though but I still love this song 9/10
6 Of Wolf and Man- Worst song on any of the three albums the sound is so muffled in my opinion i think James ruined it still this song is awesome 8/10(keep in mind all the songs are awesome)
7 Unforgiven-This song is amazing live I love the acustic intro it is just so awesome also James's voice is really clean for most of it 10/10
8 Justice Meledy- The song is awesome but i wish they could have done more with Blackend and less with And Justice but i still love it 10/10
9 Guitar and Bass Solos- The solos are just to prove that they have a good sense of humor and know how to have fun the bass is just incredible so is Hammets guitar solos and to make it even better it's about 18 minutes long 10/10

5 out of 5 stars Live albums at their best.......2005-10-10

Ok, we have a few good live albums, being Ozzy Osbourne's Tribute, Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills, Sabbath's Past Lives and Led Zeppelin's How the West was Won, but this is probably beyond that, better than studi releases. It is loud, brutal , hair-raisng, exciting, you name it. Just put in the CD and put on some Sennheiser Headphones, and you are at the show. Note, this set does not make you wish you are at the show,. This sret makes you feel as though you were there....,especially the DVDs, although I don't fancy the. Not portable, you see....Get a DVD Audio Ripper (Legally)

5 out of 5 stars My prized possesion.......2005-04-03

This box set is amazing. It contains material up to the Black Album, in 3 CDs and two DVDs. How do you do that? I love it. Metallica is so much better live. Also, the origional book is on DVD 2, and you can make a screen saver with it if you have a DVD-ROM server in your computer. I also really like the "Scary Guy" stencil that comes with the box set, it's pretty big too. This also comes with a amazing textured Metallica sticker which says:

I WAS ON STAGE WITH METALLICA

    91-92

    IN THE SNAKE PIT

    AS A SPECIAL GUEST OF:
    METALLICA

This is also green and white, with a big picture of the "Don't Tread On Me" snake from the Black Album.

Well I have to disagree with the reviewer who find this album to be a ¨part 2¨to the 1st one. It's not.In ¨Baby Sitters...¨the
girls had not yet learned to play their instuments(this is
merely informative,no big deal) and were influenced by their
producer, the moronic Sonic Youth.Their second album
find them more mature, experienced and influenced by hard rock bands like Kiss but with an overall punk sound, burying
forever their debut sonic-grundge-noise crappy sound. To
my surprise, this record rocks in a similar way as their latest
    ¨Luxury problem¨work does.And that's no small feat.For
some unknown reason their label Go-Kart records, does
not longer offer this title so I guess the best option is Amazon now.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the Faint at Heart.......2003-07-10

I bought this CD no more than 2 weeks ago. This was the last one which helped me complete my 5-album Lunachicks collection. This came out in 1992 (the year that marked the height of Grunge) and I can best describe "Binge & Purge" as being "Babysitters on Acid -- Part 2" because of its similar raw, acidic guitar sounds. The reason I decided to give this 4 stars is because even I got grossed out by some of the content: I warn future buyers that out of all the records the band released in the 90's, this one marks the peak of juvenile disgust by tackling about every bodily fluid imaginable. The title song "Binge & Purge" should be listened to by teenage girls as a method of staying away from Bulimia; in no more than 3 minutes, B&P describes in graphic detail how repeatedly forced regurgitations (often done in secret) can ultimately kill a girl in the end. And then there's "Plugg," which is the first (and not the last) song about PMS (flow and all!) But alot of the other tracks are cleverly written, including "Mom" and "This is Serious"
(an anthem for the Lunachicks themselves!)I still recommend this to any fan of this band; it completes the band's transition from their debut record and 1995's more polished "Jerk of all Trades."

5 out of 5 stars This is serious, the Lunachicks will make you delirious...........2001-07-18

Binge and Purge, being the Lunachicks second album, is a great follow-up to Babysitters On Acid. As Binge and Purge maintains a harder edge that was present in the sound of Babysitters On Acid, it shows a more creative and playful choice of lyrics. Songs such as "This is Serious" and "Binge and Purge" uplift this album from the darker songs "Apathetic" and "Whole Lotta B.S." "This is Serious" incorporates a jingle from an old anti-drug commercial. Listen carefully and you'll be able to spot it. If you liked Babysitters on Acid, you'll love Binge and Purge; but if you've just recently heard Lunachicks with their recent albums "Luxury Problem" and "Pretty Ugly," this album will take a little getting used to. It's a great album none-the-less. Everyone who listens to it is sure to find something on this album that they'll love.

    5 out of 5 stars Astonishing music.......2004-06-09

    --Thomas Tallis--
Thomas Tallis, born in 1505, was one of the outstanding liturgical composers of his day, being the acknowledged master of the composers of England from the time of Queen Mary's reign forward. He was a composer and Gentleman of the Chapel Royal during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth, and worked closely with many other composers, most particularly William Byrd. He was an organist in addition to composer. He died in 1585, having navigated his way through the tumultuous catholic/protestant difficulties of the church which provided his livelihood and creative outlet.

    --English Anthems--
There are twelve anthems here. Tallis recognised the needs of the newly Protestant clergy, who looked for intelligibility and simplicity in the worship. These anthems were in the vernacular of the people, some of the earliest liturgical anthems in English (as prior to this, the Catholic church celebrated in Latin). However, the compositions here span the time from the young King Edward's reign to the middle of Queen Elizabeth's reign, a time of great shifting of religious foundations and sensibilities.

There are some pieces here for men's voices only - four-part pieces such as 'If ye love me' and 'Here the voice and prayer' are quick famous, and very concise in scope. Other pieces are more elaborate, MATB choirs, and a few very substantial five-voice compositions, 'Christ rising' and 'Blessed are those', the later scored for a standard pre-Reformation choir of treble, mean, countertenor, tenor and bass.

The 'Tunes for Archbishop Parker' consists of eight tunes, two of which may be very familiar - the 'Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis' by Ralph Vaughn Williams comes from this number, as does Tallis' classic 'Canon'.

    --Liner Notes--
Being internationally acclaimed, the Tallis Scholars' CDs typically present their commentary and texts in English, French, German and Italian (together with any Latin texts); that is true of this disc. The cover art also typically represents visual arts contemporary with the compositions - here it is a piece from Hans Holbein the Younger, a portrait of Edward VI as a child, painted in 1538, during Tallis' lifetime.

    --The Tallis Scholars--
The Tallis Scholars, a favourite group of mine since the first time I heard them decades ago, are a group dedicated to the performance and preservation of the best of this type of music. A choral group of exceptional ability, I have been privileged to see them many times in public, and at almost every performance, their singing seems almost like a spiritual epiphany for me, one that defies explanation in words. Directed by Peter Phillips, the group consists of a small number of male and female singers who have trained themselves well to their task.

Their recordings are of a consistent quality that deserve more than five stars; this particular disc of pieces by Thomas Tallis, the namesake of the group, deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who loves choral music, liturgical music or Gregorian chant, classical music generally, or religious music. It is remarkable, both in composition and performance. The original recording was made in 1986.

4 out of 5 stars Colorful early music with pizazz.......2004-06-03

I'm always excited when Baltimore Consort release a new album, because I know it will be entertaining and will open up new vistas in musical appreciation. Adew Dundee is their second album of Scottish music (the first being their debut album "On The Banks of Helicon") and it's true to form.

The secular music presented here derives from manuscripts of early 17th century collectors like Skene (his Mandora MS) and Robert Gordon of Straloch, as well as 18th century collections such as Pills To Purge Melancholy (1719), Balcarres Lute Book (1692) and Panmure MS (1680). The title track "Adew Dundee" is a fine example of a typical delightful Scottish country air derived from these collections for the album. Then there are courtly songs and dances from the 16th and 17th centuries, many of which have a European influence, particularly from France. There is also a spritely "Scottish Branles" from French composer Estienne du Tertre.

Some of the music, like "The Gowans are gay", likely has its origins in even earlier times. A couple of songs, "A New Scotch Song of Catherine Logy" and "Adeu O desie delyt" will be familiar to Baltimore Consort fans as they are alternative versions of those from "On The Banks of Helicon".

This is music that was being played prior to a period when Scottish tunes became all the rage in England and were arranged there ad infinitum. Since the manuscripts themselves provide only rudimentary transcriptions of folk tunes, the Baltimore Consort has provided considerable improvisation, something they excel in. Excellent use is made particularly of the bagpipes (as on the lively "Whip my toudie"), combining nicely with viols, rebec, cittern, recorder, flute, lute, mandora and bodhran. As expected, this is a very professionally produced folk and court blend, and although singer Custer LaRue is perhaps not always at her best (hence the 4 stars not 5), overall it is delectable.

Listening to this music is like hearing sunset trying to translate its light to the eyes of a donkey. Or like a sad stone hustling pity at a mortuary. Or a waitress counting her tips at a bus-stop and sighing. This is music that risks a true human connection strangely.

3 out of 5 stars Rock n roll is class warfare.......2004-11-27

I agree - this ain't tops Giant Sand - but oh! "Elevator Music" alone is worth the price of admission. Damn, Howe's gtr sounds like its being rammed through like 20 Big Muffs, one right after another. Ouch!

3 out of 5 stars They only got better.......2003-09-25

Noisier than later albums. Sort of has the feel of a practice session where they just happened to have the tape running. Definitely not one of their strongest.
