Fantastic!.......2005-11-02
This collection represents Jose Van Dam at his best. The two arias from Faust are a little low for him but he sings them with great musicality. The aria from Mireille which is a rarity is sung brilliantly. Mr. Van Dam gets up to those high notes so easily. This collection mostly contains French Repertoire which was ideal for his voice. Several of the arias are rarely performed and I think should be performed more often. The few German selections are very effective as well. I think he was one of the finest Brahms Requiem soloists of all time.
Mr. Van Dam is still singing well at age 65. I think he is one of the finest singers and musicians because everything he sings means something to him internally. That is something that defines a great artist for me. I highly recommend this collection because it is a tool for singers to learn how to pronounce French properly. The diction is so clear that you can practically write it down.

Nothing like "Doubt", but stands on its own just the same.......2007-02-02
Don't buy this CD expecting to hear "Doubt, Part 2". And if you're looking to experience Jesus Jones for the first time, go buy "Doubt" instead, as it holds a wider appeal than this album will. But if you like a harder edge to your electronica, "Perverse" will be the better starting point.
As others have mentioned, this is not the NIN Lite sound that Jesus Jones brought to bear on the "Doubt" album. The music is loud, abrasive, and when you listen closely and analyze it, it's entertaining and clever. This album's packaging was perfect in so many ways, in that the title and the cover image truly represented the hard sound contained within. Missing are the catchy tunes that made "Doubt" so infectious, but "Perverse" works on its own in several ways. It's a good album to pull out when you're in a cynical mood, the hard-hitting music will feed into your angst. "Magazine" is probably my favorite song on the album, but there are other very strong tracks that help fill this album out and make it an overall enjoyable collection. And if you can figure out "Yellow Brown", then send me a note and clue me in!
There are a few albums I've pulled out from my late 80's and early 90's collection, and like many others, this was one I was fully prepared to listen to again and realize that time had not been kind to it. However, I found myself falling for it all over again, and it took a few months for the effects to wear off. It's a solid effort. And as long as you don't expect it to be in the same vein as "Doubt" (as so many have, as evidenced by the 170+ copies for sale used here, or perhaps they made the same mistaken assumption I did after years of gathering dust), then you won't be disappointed.
just buy it.......2006-05-19
Once in a while a band will take no notice of managers, record companies or sales figures and produce something absolutely breathtaking which the market just isn't ready for. Perverse is a quintessential example. The overall quality of the album make favourite tracks ultimately down to the listener, but find somewhere where you can give your system some serious revs without fear of complaints and stick "Your Crusade" on repeat.Who needs drugs?
Pioneers.......2005-08-10
When Jesus Jones first hit the airwaves in 1991 with Right Here, Right Now I thought they had an interesting sone with a cool hook. I bought the album and thought it was ok at best. When Perverse came out in 93 I bought it to see if they had anything else worth listening to. I was floored!! In a time when electronica was just starting to do something interesting Jesus Jones blew everything away with Perverse. This album was at least 5 years ahead of it's time. In my opinion it could be released today and still kick ass. Too bad most of the listening public didn't give them a chance after Doubt. Everyone missed out.
If you don't have this album, you're missing out........2005-07-26
This album includes at least one track (if not more) that stands above Right Here, Right Now, Jesus' best known (if not only) song. There's enough hooks to satisfy Right Here fans, and tracks like Get a Good Thing, The Right Decision, and Don't Believe It, easily prove Jesus Jones was more than (or at least should've been) a one hit wonder. Mike Edwards' vocals (especially on 'Get'), the songwriting, and the production is easily Jesus Jones' best work to date.
Truly great.......2003-03-06
The reviewer here who believes that Jesus Jones peaked with Doubt is also probably of the opinion that Pearl Jam should stop ripping off Creed's style. This is the best JJ album. They manage to pull off what so many have tried and failed at, melding genres from techno to metal, and in doing so, sound like they've invented a new form of rock and roll. Buy this - it kicks arse.

Album Description
The charismatic mezzo-soprano, Jean Stilwell, is one of Canada's most versatile artists - one who has that rare ability to light up any stage on which she performs. In addition to her extensive recital, concert and operatic performances, Stilwell has also garnered rave reviews for her smoldering approach to cabaret music, including the songs of William Bolcom and Benjamin Britten, Kurt Weill and Arnold Schoenberg, to those made famous by Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, Zara Leander and Lotte Lenya. Her recording of French mélodies and cabaret, Les Chemins de l'amour, was heralded by the press, making the late Toronto music critic Urjo Kareda's list of the "Best Recordings of the Year 1999".

Customer Reviews:
Very nice symphonic black metal.......2007-06-21
Wow, I didn't know there were any American bands releasing stuff like this. I picked up Gignesthai on a recommendation from a friend, and am not at all disappointed.
Dreamscapes of the Perverse play melodic black metal with a very prominent symphonic backing and occasional clean vocals, similar in style to Dimmu Borgir. Now, Dimmu is a pretty polarizing band, so if you're one of those who doesn't care for them, please don't be put off by the reference. Compared to Dimmu's stuff, I'd say that Gignesthai sounds a little less polished in terms of performance and production, but offers more variety and is often more compositionally interesting. There's plenty of aggression on display, and slower sections as well, plus a number of soft interludes that break things up nicely and never feel forced. Especially when you consider that Gignesthai is the band's first full-length effort, the end result is quite impressive. I'll be watching this band with interest to see where they go from here.
A Different Kind of Black Metal.......2007-02-13
This band took me by surprise. By looking at the cover I thought this band would be heavy but not like this.
Check out their myspace at [...] if you want to hear them.
World of Malice is definitely one of my favorite songs along with in anguished verse. This band sounds like a darker version of Dark Tranquility and deserve more than some praise. They have a dark, creepy touch to their music and are very heavy. Also another positive is that most of their songs are around 7 minutes long so you can rock out to your favorite songs for a long time.

Souls At Zero - 'A Taste For The Preverse' (Energy).......2005-07-16
Armed with their new drummer(for this CD anyway)Jamie Miller,Souls At Zero have returned with this here second effort to bash your senses silly. From the opener "Undecided",the heavy duty "Taken Apart","Thrown Down","Human Distortion" and "Needles",this ensemble provides living proof they mean business. Not all metalheads will even like this CD,but if you're open to experiencing lesser known artists like these guys and willing to take a chance, you might actually get something out of this disc.

Lovely musical trip, gritty and beautiful.......1998-06-23
I really liked this CD. I picked it up because it was 20 FF, and this is incredibly cheap. It turned out to be one of the better impulse buys I've ever made. It's a lot of fun, particulary Freebient, I Need Drugs, and Pissing in the Wind.
It has some of the nice, rhythmic looping I associate with trance music, but it's grittier, sort of like trip hop, except that this definitely isn't British.

Could be good..........1999-09-12
This CD's musical selections are good, though the artist's German delivery isn't.
Worst German CD I have ever bought. Poor Quality Overall.......1999-08-12
This CD is not typical of Caberet music of the '20's, and I really don't know where they got the songs. My wife who was raised in Berlin agrees. Artists are simply a piano and one female singer.and the qualaity of the CD is very poor but not the type of "poor" that one would expect if the recordings were reproductions of songs/music recorded in the 1920's. Poor modern recording. I'd sure pass this one if I were you.
