2 Great Goldsmith scores for the price of 1.......2000-01-27

I origonally bought this CD on the strength of the film Outland, its one of my favourite Sean Connery movies & I always liked the music, the CD also has the Capricorn 1 soundrtack which is a good bonus, both feature the usual touches of goldsmith, excellent action cues, nice moments of calm, moments of suspense etc, a good example of this being The Message on Outland, from a deleted scene from the film this cue was written for a scene where Connerys character reacts to his wife leaving him, its a slow & quite nice track which conveys nicely Connerys characters sadness. My favourite track on Outland is Hot Water, the music to the exiting chase scene in the film, while the main theme to Capricorm 1 is memorable in itself, the Cd also features a couple of unused tracks from both movies, this I feel is always a bonus. A good buy, especially for fans of the films.

The 1st and 2nd discs in the outland series are extremelly ambient. Except the 2nd one is ambient on and off with some eastern and electronic with bass but mostelly ambient. 3 and 4 are electro dub charged with awesome samples and ethnic music throughout. In my opinion i prefer the dark side of the moog ambient stuff. Their sceems to be more structure to the ambience their pink floyd ambient very inthralling more actual keyboard sothingness instead of soft texturless ambience. Dark, ambient, Trancy, exciting...what more can I say...one of my favorite CD's after 2 years of listening.

This album combines field recordings that were done in Africa with electronic drones and meanderings. The CD has one song listed "African Virus (Electronic Sonata with a Cold Loved by Nature)" that has 6 parts. These range from serene drone (part 1), to heavy trance and percussion (part 3). This album is one of my favourite Fax records releases. If you like this album you will love the Psychonavigation series of Namlook and Laswell-wonderful stuff.

Unbelieveble!.......2005-05-21

Wow! What a great disc! I could never believe someone was making this kind of music nowadays! I was really looking for the new Pride Of Lions cd when a friend turn me into Outland in a little music store near my home. Was I completely swept away by their songs! Ok, their style is utterly 80's AOR/Hard rock (although it is obviously much better produced), and you can hear hints of Survivor, The Alan Parsons Project, REO Speedwagon, Styx and other greats throught the CD, but they do have their own style and originality. In fact is hard to believe this band is actually a two man project. Jeff Prentice and Rob Nishida write, sing, produce and play almost everything in Long Way Home (the only outside player is drummer Pat Torpey, ex-Mr. big). And do they play and sing! You'll be probably thinking this is a 6 man band, at least, with great guitar solos, harmonies, keyboards flourishes and generally tasteful instrumentation and vocals. This is one of the most flawless cds I have ever heard! Even the last track (a cover of Thin Lizzy's Hollywood) is perfect. If you're into melodic rock this is the CD you can't live without. Buy it and be happy! Not everybody is writing rap and nu metal today. It's refreshing to know that some new talent guys are doing great melodic songs with guts and passion. Ten stars for this one! A classic!

SUPERB WHITE FUNK !!!!!.......2006-03-24

This album shows the growing leanings towards funk Gary Numan had adopted circa 91.Funkier than ever before,VERY Prince-influenced,this album is a hard hitting one,with excellent guitar performance and exquisite percussion programming.It has some nice ballads too.Starts out and out funk and gets more industrial towards the end.Gazza's voice is surprisingly less processed on most of this album's songs than on previous offerings,making for a nice,more natural variation.The sound is very good but the remastered version has gorgeous bonus tracks:River and Mistasax,which are 2 nice instrumentals,the excellent Shame single,and two remixes of My World Storm that are way better than the lp version.
Not an essential purchase for the average Numan fun but a treat for those of us who enjoy funk rock with the classic Numan signature.

Almost Unlistenable.......2005-03-09

I love Gary Numan and I was excited that he was finally getting his albums released in the US again. In this respect he reminded me of Alex Chilton who had the world's ear, after the Replacements brought him new exposure, and he released "High Priest" whose low point was a cover of "Volare".

Outland is noisy and tuneless and had no chance of reestablishing him in the US market. Great cover, though.
