What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

The Hairspray soundtrack will feature 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers that were created specifically for the film version of the hit Broadway musical - "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl In Town," and "Come So Far." Also featured on the soundtrack are the songs "Good Morning Baltimore," "Welcome to the `60s," "Nicest Kids In Town," and "You Can't Stop The Beat." The songs are performed by cast members John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and Elijah Kelley among others.

The Hairspray soundtrack is produced by Marc Shaiman and features music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. It features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney (Rolling Stones, Bette Midler) and Peter Mokran (Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera).

Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent soundtrack.......2007-07-18

The music on this soundtrack is so fun. "Good Morning Baltimore" is an optimistic and happy song performed by Nikki Blonsky. "I Hear The Bells" shows her vocal range as a singer. Blonsky is the highlight of this soundtrack, but there are so many other excellent track. "Run And Tell That" is an upbeat track performed by Elijah Kelley. This song is a crowd pleaser for sure. Queen Latifah sounds so soulful and cool on the tracks "I Know Where I've Been" and "Big, Blond and Beautiful". "Ladies Choice" is a song that gets me moving out of my seat. Zac Efron sounds great vocally on this song. He also sounds good on this track "Without Love." It is a sweet love song. "Cooties" is a sexy sounding song performed by Aimee Allen. Christopher Walken and John Travolta really surprised me on the track "You're Timeless To Me" This is a sentimentally funny song. Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now is a cute song featuring Rikki Lake. I enjoyed listening to all the tracks on this soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Very good attempt at one of my favorites........2007-07-17

I just got this soundtrack today and right away in my mind i was comparing it to the original cast, and i also flashed back to the stage performance and I knew i had to stop that because no matter who redid it will never match them. I am disappointed many of the songs from the musical didn't make it onto the soundtrack, and i could do without the new songs they added in. Overall to me the whole soundtrack is very good. ONly real complaint i have is how they butchered the song "without love" that's one of my favorites out of the whole show and the rendition of it is terrible! in my opinion. Either way i really do like this sountrack and can't wait to see it in theaters this Friday (opening day first showing.. lol). Either way Hairspray is just a fun expereince and i'm glad they did it in movie form to bring it to alot more people who aren't really into musicals as i am. Hairpsray is like my top fav. So yea... good buy.

p.s: i also love the fact they let Ricki Lake onto the soundtrack in number 19 "mama i'm a big girl now"

5 out of 5 stars YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT.......2007-07-17

I refuse to compare the Broadway Cast with the Soundtrack Cast because they each stand on their own dancing feet and each makes you feel as high as Tracy Turnblads hair-do. And who could have know John Travolta would make his 3rd or fourth movie comeback playing a two-ton woman named Edna Turnblad. The photos make it look like he swallowed a volkswagon but I can't wait to see him in the movie.

The CD starts with the jubilant "Good Morning Baltimore" and the finale is the driving.pulsing "You Can't Stop The Beat" and sandwiched in-between is a raft of tasty morsels like Blonskys(Tracey) "I Can Hear The Bells' "Welcome to The Sixties" "Without Love" and the afore-mentioned "Good Morning Baltimore" and "You Can'tstop The Beat"

Zac Efron playing Traceys love interest Link Larkin shines on "It takes Two" and a new rocker written for the film "Ladies Choice" and Queen Latifah soars on her big number "I Know Where I'm Going"

Although John Travoltas role has not much singing he and Christopher Walken duet on the charmingly off-beat "You're Timeless To Me"

"Hairspray" is fun,it rocks,it rolls, and to be cliche-it just darn well makes you feel good.

4 out of 5 stars Fantabulous!.......2007-07-17

Another exceptional soundtrack comes yet again. DREAMGIRLS has honestly been my favorite of 2007, but HAIRSPRAY gives it a semi-run for its money. Sure, there is no powerhouse performance quite like Jennifer Hudson's Academy Award winning clinching performance of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" or a soul-wrencher like Beyonce's lovely "Listen", but there are a slew of enjoyable, credible vocal performance.

In this instance, I feel there is no need to scan the entire track list. There are tracks that are much more enjoyable than others. Along with that, there are vocal performances that are bland and those that are killer. Not to degrade anybody, but performances by Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeifer, and Travolta aren't nearly as invigorating as electrifiying performances by Queen Latifah (who sound's extraordinary), the ever maturing Zac Efron (the boy's got some pipes) and even newcomer Nikki Blonsky. James Mardsen isn't bad, but he doesn't have the same vocal power as Queen or the shockingly good Efron. I'll admit it, the kid has talent, even if I'm sick of seeing him on the cover of every tween, teen, and kiddy-pop magazine (not that I read them!!!)

"Good Morning Baltimore" is a strong opener by Blonsky while Efron's "It Takes Two" is simply beautiful, particularly with his lovely, in tune falsetto C# at the end. "Ladies' Choice" is energized while Queen Latifah sounds even sassier than she did in CHICAGO with the great "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful". She lends her vocals to my personal favorite of the soundtrack, the gospel-jazz tinged "I Know Where I've Been", perhaps the best vocal of the entire album. "Without Love" is another track featuring strong vocals by Efron (the show-stealer clearly on this track), while Marsden lends some sensational vocals on "It's Hairspray". Perhaps the unchallenged theme of HAIRSPRAY is the ambitious, ensemble performance "You Can't Stop The Beat", which is indeed excellent. "Mama, I'm A Big Girl" isn't my favorite of favorites, but it is fun as well, particularly with the added plug for Ricki ("go Ricki, go Ricki"). Tracks such as "The Legend of Ms. Baltimore Crabs" or "You're Timeless To Me" fall flat, which I couldn't really say about DREAMGIRLS soundtrack. All in all though, I think this is a fantastic listen and I am definitely a softy for musicals. Go Zac & Queen!!! 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Love the Broadway Cast recording? Give this a second chance..........2007-07-14

When I first put in this CD and heard "Good Morning Baltimore", I was utterly disappointed. In fact, by the end of the first run-through I was almost prepared to write-off the movie. Almost.

If, like me, you're a fan of the stage production and the Broadway Cast recording, then you have to remember -- like I came to -- that this is the soundtrack to a movie (re-)adaptation.

You might, initially, be annoyed by the changes in the lyrics of certain songs, the addition of certain songs, the removal of "The Big Dollhouse", and the change in the order of songs. I still trying to get the putting of "Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now" at the end (since it was early on in the stage production)!

I think the movie is going to be great. But you can't compare the stage production and the movie directly -- it's really not fair, because they're entirely different mediums, and perhaps, more or less, aimed at different audiences (i.e., the movie is more for the masses).

You might need to listen to the CD a couple of times before you get into it. I'm on my third go-round now, and it's growing on me with every go (except for the song "Cooties"!).

The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott Wilson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Several Weak Tracks.......2007-06-27

The only thing holding this album back from being consistentatly a 5 star critic's favorite is the fact that it contains several weak tracks, and the title song Grease is possibly the only legitimate song that will bring back nostalgia for those that liked the movie and the singing in the musical. I always thought they were stuck in the 50s, but they've updated it to like the 70s or maybe even 90s, but still not modern enough for my tastes. The music is well crafted filler to a classic movie that will only date with time.

5 out of 5 stars Throwback music.......2007-05-29

If you hav ever seen the movie than you already know, and if you haven't, then you need to. It is a classic American musical, with great oldies music. Highly recommeded.

5 out of 5 stars Very Upbeat Songs.......2007-05-21

Listening to the music from Grease brings back the good memories of watching the movie. The music is funny (Summer Nights; Beauty School Dropout; Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee; Greased Lighting), touching (There Are Worse Things I Could Do; Hopelessly Devoted To You) and very 70's (Blue Moon; Rock "n" Roll Is Here To Stay; Born To Hand Jive). John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sing great, but the supporting cast (Stockard Channing, Sha-Na-Na), also contribute to a good sound. Great rock and roll!

4 out of 5 stars Classic nostalgia .......2007-05-03

I of course remember when I was eight years old when Grease came out and I played the singles to death on the turntable. Revisiting now I remember how *cumbersome* it is. The first ten tracks are absolutely essential. They are the strength and reflection of the soundtrack and what makes the movie go.

Any listener should not be remiss about the cumbersome nature of the soundtrack. One can skip over easily the songs they don't like. Not like the ol' turntable vinyl where that convenience was not there. Let's face it, too much Sha-Na-Na is too much Sha-Na-Na.

Overall, it's a great buy for the asking price for those who remember. A versatile Travolta and Newton-John strutted their stuff in a time they could do no wrong. And contributions by Franki Valli, Channing and Avalon make this a good listen.

5 out of 5 stars A feel-good, sing-along soundtrack.......2007-04-14

Although I'm not usually a fan of movie soundtracks, my one big exception is Grease! Who wouldn't love this collection of sing-along songs that brighten your mood no matter when, or how often, you listen to them? Since Grease is also one of my all-time favorite movies, hearing the songs automatically makes me recall the particular scene they correlate with, and I invariably start smiling.

Grease consists of many talented actors and actresses, most of whom could sing as well as they could act. Therefore, each song -- including numerous solos by John Travolta, Oliva Newton-John and Stockard Channing -- is a treat to listen to.

If I were only allowed to bring one CD to the proverbial deserted island, Grease would probably be it! This is one purchase that will pay off, time and time again.

This is a production rife with odd pairings: English actor Daniel Day-Lewis joining up with the Mohawks; James Fenimore Cooper adapted by Michael Mann; disparate composers Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman teaming up. This last pairing seems a suspicious attempt to endow the score of this modern film adaptation of a junior high school literary evergreen with both a golden age of Hollywood dramatic bent (Jones) and a '90s-slick guitar-muzak veneer (Edelman). A strange amalgam that doesn't quite work. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Last of the Mohicans.......2007-07-12

The music in this soundtrack speaks to one's soul; the theme runs through the entire CD. I've never even seen the movie, but I just love this music with its compelling rhythm and beautiful combination of strings and orchestral arrangements. It is both emotionally moving, relaxing and motivating at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive, breathtaking, and atmospheric.......2007-06-29

I listen to this soundtrack everytime I ride through the Appalachian Mountains and when I drive to Chimney Rock, (Why not listen to the soundtrack of the "..Mohican's" filmed location? -It really sets the mood.) The whole mood of the music fits in with the cinematography and timescape of the film. So many feelings are poured into the making of each composition, and mostly through tracks like "The Glade", "The Kiss", "The Courier", "Elk Hunt" and of course "Promentory", you'll feel passion, anxiety, intune with nature, and every possible feeling that deals with love and determination. I wish "Promentory" would have been as precise as the version on the film. I miss the bass strings and the part where Uncas dies and Alice chooses her fate. There's a steady tune of violin and symphonic bits that add to the on-coming climax. But all in all, I still enjoy listening to this album, and will for many years to come. And Clannad a remarkable impression on the film. On the VHS, you'll here a beautiful, dreary female voice sing the song "I will find you". To bad it is edited out of the U.S. DVD release.

5 out of 5 stars Who is this idiot Jerry McCulley ?.......2007-06-24

Why is he writing reviews? Please Mr.McCulley stop. People this music was probably the first soundtrack, that made me sit up and listen and understand how much the music behind the movie actually drives the emotions that cannot be conveyed.
The music also can stand alone by itself. I cant name favorites. But this is one piece of art thats universally loved by everybody. Get it, you never will regret it.

Like The Muppet Show or The Simpsons, Shrek is tiered with visual appeal, fantasy, and sophisticated humor that appeals to children and adults on two mutually exclusive levels. Judging by the soundtrack alone, there is some genuine emotion coming from this movie; Rufus Wainwright, the Proclaimers, and especially the Eels all pen winsome, longing tunes. Dana Glover's "It Is You (I Have Loved)" represents the soundtrack's requisite glossy ballad, but it's better than most, and John Powell's climactic, orchestral "True Love's First Kiss" makes one wish there was a full score to accompany this soundtrack. On the flip side, Smash Mouth cover the Monkees' "I'm a Believer" with a groovy treatment of crunchy hip-hop beats, and Leslie Carter (sister of Aaron and Nick) gives a perky performance on the Britney-esque "Like Wow!" The soundtrack squeezes the last drops of juice from the overplayed Smash Mouth hit "All Star," but other than that, it strikes a great balance between cute-but-not-precious pop hits, and more grown-up songs that are well within reach of young ears. --Beth Massa

I bought the cd after the movie, I had not paid any attention to the words. I wish I would have before I bought it. "I don't give a damn about my reputation" is not one of the songs I want my kids repeating. The music is great, as long as I skip two songs I don't want my kids to hear...

Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission." Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti Western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best. --Heidi MacDonald

3 out of 5 stars If you saw the movie or do not need music material for a performance, forget it........2007-06-13

Don't get me wrong, I love Ennio's work. The problem is that ALL OF THE SONGS SOUND THE SAME. They are a variation of 2 different melodies.

5 out of 5 stars The Mission.......2007-05-12

An excellent sound track from a powerful movie. Ennio Morricone is a very gifted composer and really captured the haunting beauty of the film. Well worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-03-31

Ennio Morricone's soundtrack of The Mission is fabulous. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because there wasn't more of that fantastic sound in the CD! Truly enchanting.

The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song gets caught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting.

Note that this two-CD Deluxe Edition features a larger booklet and additional tracks, including dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars "You Will LOVE This CD!!!".......2007-06-27

I just got my CD and I love it... My favorite songs is Listen, I am Changing and Of course the NO.#1 HIT--"I'm telling you I'm not going"
Just Purchase it and you will not be disappointed.!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Your Goin' To Love this!.......2007-06-20

I was very sceptic about this adaptation. I was very dissapointed in Evita when they chose populairty over talent. I am a fan of Madonna and Beyonce but the performance by Beyonce is amazing.
In answer to T.T.'s remarks. RENT THE MOVIE! Gosh, a movie cost 4 bucks at the rental store. And there is very little talking. Most f the songs are like they are in the movie. But anyways...
THe performance is atstounding. I think that this album goes right up there with The Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz and Chicago (never seenthis one, too young).
The songs are movig and the add ons are amazing. Listen is my Favorite, but more of that latter.
The Performances:
Beyonce- Beyonce was born to be Deena. Infact she mirrors Denna a whole lot (see Wikipedia - Destiny's Child). She delivers a superb performance, better that the original Bway Deena. Dreamgirls is phenominal.

Jennifer Hudson - Well what can I say but SIMON COWELL YOU WERE WRONG! And as she sings in I am Changin' AND NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP[HER]

Anikki Nonni Rose - Sorry if I spell her name wrong, but it is very odd. Honey if there was n unsung heroe of this film it would be her. Her phenominal and most of the time hilarious performance is what adds character to the film. Esp. when they brake Jimmy up with them she delivers a hilarious speech.

Eddie Murphie - Wonderful, Who knew he could sing.

Jamie Fox - GREAT!

Best Songs:
Move - Amazing! Wonderful beat. And SHAKE IT ON!
Cadilac Car - Wonderful song, esp. If you have a crappy car or a real Cadilac car
Steppin' To the bad Side - WONDERFUL, BEST SONG OF THE WHO MOVIE
I Love you I Do-lovely
Dreamgirls-Just hair raising
IT's All Over - Cuss a lot, I know, but amazing adittude though. Don't let little ones listen to this one.
And I am Telling You I'm Not Going - Just bye the CD for this song. I can't put in words the emotions in this song.
I Am Changing- Beautiful
Effie Sing my Song-Not in the movie but amazing
One Night Only- great
Disco version- great, but would have loved the wooshing like in the movie. A little too long, but when you see the extended version you will get the longer version and think WHY DID THEY CUT IT????!?!?!?
Listen - AMAZING SPECTACULAR! SUPER! IENIBOIWEBWEJKFDIVLEFB!
Dreamgirls Finale - " " (same as above)
Family (End Credits)- Better than the ordinary version for reasons I can't explain.

1 Dissapointment:
When I first saw you was a gereat song in the film, but in the original cast it was after Dreamgirls (To Sig. that Deena and Curtis were Together)
and it was reprised with an argument about Deena's Dreams. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS! but they cut out Deena and the purpose of the song was lost, but it is still wonderful.

My Only Thin is Get the Orginal Bway Cast and this CD. The Orig. Bway cast has a cool One Night Only Too. Try Them both. They have diff. textures, but are both truly amazing.

2 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-06-03

Apart from Beyonce singing Dreamgirls, this album doesn't bring much. It's a dud. Most of the songs are just a lot of talking not actual singing. The movie was good, and I think it's better to watch that and listen to the songs. Unlike the soundtrack "Casino", which I can listen to and enjoy without seeing the movie, I can't with this. they should have done what most movies do and pick a bunch of great oldies by other artists back in the day to create the movie/soundtrack. and i'm also very sick of Jennifer Hudson. sure she can hit high notes, but she only sounds like she's screaming. her voice is not appealing. i rather listen to Beyonce's voice any day; it's easier on my ears. i also don't like how she's so arrogant and ungrateful to Idol. i don't think she's going far with that kind of stink attitude. it just shows you're a sore loser.

3 out of 5 stars Quite forgettable.......2007-05-15

I've had this CD for several months now and I hardly ever listen to the music. I'm surprised how uninteresting it is to me. Yes, there are some good musical moments on this CD and Jennifer Hudson can sing, but she also screams too much, in my opinion, and I think she was extremely overrated in this performance. I just don't love listening to her sing on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls.......2007-05-12

The music is more intense watching the movie. I didn't enjoy the CD as much without the movie.

If film and music fans sometimes wonder why soundtracks are often little more than pastiches of past pop hits and chart flavors of the moment, it's largely due to the blockbuster success of releases like this collection from 1987's surprise Patrcik Swayze/Jennifer Grey romantic hit. The film's retro-romantic concerns came shrewdly wrapped in a (largely manufactured) dance craze conceit tailor-made for such pop chestnuts as the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," the Zodiacs' "Stay," and the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night." Mickey and Sylvia once again argued that "Love Is Strange"--if not quite as strained as Swayze's own attempt at balladry, "She's Like the Wind." Eric Carmen's "Hungry Eyes" showcased the former Raspberries leader to good effect, but the real soundtrack sweepstakes winner here was the Jennifer Warnes/Bill Medley duet "(I've Had) The Time of My Life." That performance not only won the Best Original Song Oscar the following year, but became one of the era's most performed songs and a ubiquitous radio staple. --Jerry McCulley

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

You needn't see the film of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to appreciate the wonder, magic, and fearful chills of J.K. Rowling's phenomenal bestseller in John Williams's outstanding score. Williams typically avoids the source material for the films he scores, but he reportedly derived great pleasure and inspiration from Rowling's first Harry Potter adventure, and created a perfect motif (fully expressed in "Hedwig's Theme") to dominate his score. It's first heard as a dreamy celesta waltz and embellished through myriad incarnations and moods, often with a sinister edge befitting the darker tones of Chris Columbus's direction. Evident are fantastical allusions to Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky (among others), and Williams's epic track is "Quidditch Match," a breathtaking frenzy to accompany the film's dazzling highlight. And while Williams occasionally flirts with self-plagiarism (with inevitable variants of his Hook and Star Wars themes), this is nevertheless a richly regal score that brilliantly evokes the mystery and magic of Harry Potter's world. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Movie.......2007-05-17

We love the music from this composer (John Williams - also composed Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman) to begin with and wanted this soundtrack. It doesn't disappoint. My children are so excited about the upcoming HP movie that we play this soundtrack on the way to school each morning.

5 out of 5 stars John Willams at his best!.......2007-02-20

This soundtrack is great. As you listen you can visualize what's happening just by the music! Lovely!

4 out of 5 stars It too cheerful...........2007-01-25

I thnk that the soundtrack is okay. I wish some that some of the music wasn't so cheerful. Harry Potter story is not really a cheerful one. That "Prologue" piece is going to be as famos as the "star wars" theme and "superman" theme. For my I would have put a little bit of mystery in the song. I wish they would have made music called "Harry theme". I also wish John Williams would have not stoped after the 2nd one. I would have love to here his "Volemorts theme"

3 out of 5 stars Not entirely up to snuff, in retrospect.......2006-12-30

It's obvious the man was still feeling out this Harry Potter thing with this first score. There is a lot of repetition, but by later soundtracks it seems to have been necessary. This soundtrack contains the original, lovely and full settings of the main Harry Potter themes.

5 out of 5 stars Cousin Harry Potter.......2006-12-14

The soundtrack for all of the Harry Potter movies has been done by classical maestro and 20th century genius John Williams.

Q; Does John WIlliams make any bad music?
A: No.

Q: Does the music capture the feeling of the movie, taking you back to parts of the story sequentially?
A: Yes

Q: What are the other advantages to buying the soundtrack?
A: Aestetically, you are not competing with the visual imagery of the movie, which was technically well done and highly engaging. This provides an opportunity to explore the nuances of the musical score, without being visually distracted.

This also provides a nice day dreaming interlude for youth, who are highly structured and overprogrammed nowadays.

At long last, Lindsay Lohan and Meryl Streep sing on the same CD. Okay, so they don't actually duet, but both do perform on the soundtrack to Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's popular radio show. (Keillor fans will know exactly what to expect, as the film is scrupulously faithful to his universe, and Keillor and his Shoe Band wrote a good deal of the songs.) As anybody who's seen Postcards from the Edge knows, Streep can really sing, and she sounds great in the rootsy, old-style country vein that makes up most of this soundtrack. Her rollicking duets with her screen sister Lily Tomlin, "My Minnesota Home" and "Goodbye to My Mama," are priceless. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are beyond crusty on "Whoop-I-Ti-Yi-Yo," which sounds like both an outtake from and a parody of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, while "Bad Jokes" is, well, just that. As for Lohan, who plays Streep's daughter, her version of "Frankie & Johnny" is a little shaky but heartfelt and kinda adorable. Purists, you can start hollering now. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Country Music.......2007-05-22

I love the music to this movie. The band is superb and the instrumentals are great!! The words are upbeat and heartfelt. It brought back wonderful memories of growing up and thinking of all my family and relatives. I only wish I could find more CD's that the band plays together on.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music!.......2007-05-12

If you like Bluegrass music, the soundtrack of the Prairie Home Companion is a must-have. I recommend watching the movie first and then getting the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-03-22

Nice to listen to. The DVD has a few, but not all, of the most entertaining songs from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A PRAIRE HOME COMPANION REVIEW.......2007-03-12

I bought the soundtrack since I enjoyed the music when I watched the movie. You can listen to the excellent deliveries of country music songs from Garrison Keillor,Woody Harrelson,Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin. In my opinion the best reason to buy the CD is to hear Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin singing the "My Minnesota Home".They are just fantastic!Pleasant suprise is the well prepared DVD that complements the CD and contains some songs that you don't find in the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Meryl Streep.......2007-03-09

This is a wonderful collection of songs, sung with warmth and heart - a true treasury of music.
The highlight has to be, though, the beautiful voice of Meryl Streep. Not only is she the world's greatest living actress, but she is a profoundly talented and gifted vocalist. Her grace, warmth, depth, and beauty give a gorgeous elegance - and eloquence - to the songs she performs. I challenge anyone to listen to "Goodbye to My Mama" without becoming teary-eyed. Streep is, in every way, quite simply...extraordinary.
A highly recommended collection of entertaining and touching songs.

It should be little surprise that of the three Prince of Egypt CDs, this one, which contains music actually used in the picture, is the best. The disc features songs written by Academy Award winners Stephen Schwartz and Hans Zimmer. It also showcases the always impressive vocal talents of Ofra Haza on several tracks. The disc also crams in a few singles--ranging from the solid Boyz II Men track "I Will Get There" to the average "The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to the dismal "Through Heaven's Eyes," by K-Ci & JoJo. But ultimately, Haza steals the show on tracks like "Cry" and the gorgeous "Deliver Us," performed with Eden Riegel. Other standouts include "Playing with the Big Boys," by Steve Martin and Martin Short, and a pleasant, if not unexpected, vocal by Michelle Pfeiffer on "When You Believe." --Aaron Tassano

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music!.......2007-06-11

My 3 1/2 year old after watching the movie fell in love with the songs. She asks for me to play the CD for her almost daily. She enjoys singing to it. I enjoy being reminded that God is still fighting for us in our darkest moments.

5 out of 5 stars Prince of Egypt music cd........2007-05-30

The Prince of Egypt soundtrack is pure gold. Almost every song is homerun. We've listened to this disk many times and it never gets old. Keep in mind that several of the songs express powerful religious themes.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-02-01

This Soundtrack appeals to both me and my 7 year old daughter as well as my teenage neices. The music is powerful and beautiful. A permanent addition to my music collection.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-01-12

Our 4 yr. old daughter watches this movie all the time, and it was great to get the cd so we could listen to it elsewhere. The music is awesome and it also has the lyrics inside, bonus. Great buy

4 out of 5 stars Great Music--but Sound Levels Need Adjusting.......2007-01-09

My whole family loves this CD. Unfortunately we have to turn the stereo way up to hear the songs at the right level--and portions of some songs are still hard to hear. If I had bought locally I would have returned this CD for a replacement.
