Over flowing with Talent!.......2002-01-16

This little lady is amazing! I first saw her open for Dar Williams and I was blown away! I bought her cd, Distillation, that night. Shortly there after I attained this album. I must say that I liked Distillation better, but this cd was not a let down. You can hear her on stage presence.
She is phenomenal performer, with an incredible artistic range for a folk singer. She combines blues, funk and folk with smart, witty lyrics.
I've had the pleasure of speaking briefly with her, as have one of my friends, and we both agree she is wonderful. During the Dar show she was next to me in the crowd and sat through the show. In my personal experience, I usually don't see performers sitting in the crowd through other performers. She is, all in all, a refreshing energetic addition to the folk scene.

Brave young artist.......2000-08-24

I saw Erin at a coffee shop in San Luis Obispo, California, far away from what I believe is her native East Coast. She's quite a package. Standing roughly five feet tall, arms wrapped around her guitar, she is a perfect metaphor for her music: a small, simple package and delivery, but brimming with explosive zest and talent.

Musically: trimmed down acoutic folk with jazzy/bluesy riffs and a propensity towards clever, well-read, yet street-smart lyrics.

Erin is quite an engaging live performer; when I saw her, she had the whole crowd singing along (or performing hand gestures) with her for several songs. This album tries to capture some of that infective playing that she shows live and, to some extent, it does capture it but overall the album feels disjointed and thrown together. A good effort nevertheless.

Beautiful relaxing harmonica and harp music. You've got to be a harmonica lover(which I Am) to enjoy this CD. I'm a chromatic harmonica student so this is right up my alley. Tommy Reilly displays wonderful technique and phrasing. If you are having trouble getting to sleep throw this baby on and you'll be having 40 winks in no time.

i've had the original release for more years than i will admit. it's as enjoyable today as it was the first time i listened to it.

in addition to the john gay versions are the earliest known versions of the songs and some that came afterwards. for example, the tune of what most people know as 'greensleeves' is played from the first known italian setting (15th century as i recall) to one done in the irish folk style from the 19th century, with gay's version in the middle.

gay borrowed many of his tunes from other songs that were familiar to his audience. where the original might be sentimental or even religious in content, gay would write a bawdy or satiric version, which would have had added interest and humor for his audience.

but don't think that all this impressive scholarship makes for a dull time. the musicians are first rate and the disc can be enjoyed simply as wonderfully played and sung 18th music.

Spare and bitter origins of British opera.......2003-11-19

This is a splendid performance of astringent pieces from the original Beggar's Opera performed in opposition to importation of the lush continental style.

The Met Bar's Worst Nightmare........1999-11-07

The most un-trendy album of the year award goes to DCFC with no contest. The music seems more like an impromptu jam session while the lyrics are razor sharp. The vocal's are beautiful; Micheal John Sheehy's voice is a treasure and a secret well kept. They took alot of heat for the EP "Perfect Piece of Trash" but all amends are made here and now; highlights both emotionally and muscially are 'The Curse' and 'Steal Away'. This band deserves far more attention than they are getting -Give it to them.

These are old recordings, so quality isn't perfect, but these are beautiful songs, beautifully sung. Considering you get two discs, it's a bargain.

not enough bang for the buck.......2006-04-28

It seems a crime that, in order to get John McCormack singing "I'm Falling in Love with Some One," you have to shell out big bucks for this CD. I can't abide opera, and there are too many arias here sung in foreign languages to justify a capital investment. McCormack also does a striking rendition of "Because," which is missing from this CD. maybe we'll get lucky and Archeophone will put together a few disks, all in English, and I'd pay their price, steep though it usually is.

This is an excellent album.......2007-02-24

I was browsing genres on iTunes and this popped up in the alt-country section (though I wouldn't call it that). After listening to the samples I bought it immediately (the actual CD - I don't like downloads). Played very often, this record has become one of my all-time favorites. The songs are an interesting dicotomy, evoking a wintery bleakness laced with optimism; faith with doubt; love and loss. There seems to be a strong spiritual undercurrent as well, like a dark night of the soul surrounded by a hopeful, reassuring warmth. It is not surprising, then, that a lot of the songs mention winter (there's even a snow-covered street on the back cover).

The sound is solo-acoustic based (with one or two electric, full-band tunes thrown in), with tambourine and harmonica. A heavy acoustoc guitar strum pervades most of the songs: simple yet speaking volumes. And that's the real beauty of "Cold Before Morning."

I can't believe no one has written a review of this. But now you know. Buy it now.
