Addled, staggering, bleary-eyed, wired: that's how Buried Alive: New Barbariand Live in Marylan sounds. It's the band's charm, the reason this recoding has been long sought in bootleg form. And the irony of the New Barbarians' 1979 tour should be lost on no one. Keith Richards's sentence for his 1977 heroin and cocaine bust in Toronto was two days of charity work. What'd he do? He got his guitar-slinging partner from the Rolling Stones, Ronnie Wood, to bring this ad hoc band--boasting himself and Richards on guitars, Ziggy Modeliste on drums, Ian McLagan on keys, and Stanley Clarke on bass--to play two dates for the Canadian Institute for the Blind. Describing how the band warmed up for the tour, the unnamed liner notician for this long-sought set writes that "[m]ost days rehearsals went on until the drugs ran out." So penance for the drug bust came in the form of a gig by a band who rehearsed until they couldn't get high anymore. As for the New Barbarians' tunes, they're ramshackle and shouted and bellowed and brilliant. The First Official Release of the Live Concert Recording by the Erstwhile Group of Musicians Assembled by Guitarist Ronnie Wood as a Side Project from the Rolling Stones that Served as a Vehicle for his Solo Material in the Late 1970's. This Show was Taped in Largo, Maryland in 1979 and the Stage was Populated by Wood, Keith Richards, Stanley Clarke on Bass, Ian Maclagan on Keys, Ziggy Modeliste of the Meters and Bobby Keys on Sax. Both Wood and Richards Are Well Aware that They Are Not the World's Greatest Vocalists, So the Emphasis of the Material was on the Masterful Interplay Between the Assembly of Such Stellar Musicians. It Simply Couldn't Avoid Catching Fire as their Sets Burned Bright with an Organic Intensity. not what you remember from 1979.......2007-04-22

I saw this tour the night it hit San Diego in May of '79. That was a fantastic show. The band was loosely tight, and the vocals were solid. Keith was magnificent that night. Not true about this show at the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland. This would be bad even if it were a bootleg.. Maybe it's just the Cap Centre. I saw the Stones there in 1975 and that was not great either, and every other time I've seen them (37 times and counting) the've bested that performance. This release is a drag because the New Barbarians were a really good show, just not at this or the Ottawa shows.

If you saw a New Barbarians show, you'll probably like this.......2007-03-17

First of all, this album is not for every Stones/Faces fan or the faint of heart. To say the vocals are rough is an understatement. Much as I love Ronnie Wood as a guitarist, his voice is another matter. And sorry Keith, you're also one of the best, but vocally, not much help. But as a live event, the shows on this tour were highly enjoyable. Saw them in Pittsburgh within days of the Maryland show captured here, and have many fond memories. The band was excellent; everybody seemed very relaxed and having a good time. It hardly mattered that the singing was bad. There was a Faces' kind of atmosphere with the emphasis on rocking, not perfectionism. Kind of hit or miss, maybe, but overall it satisfied. Although it doesn't compare to the live experience, the album brings back fond memories, and has its finer moments. Stanley Clarke's solo on the second disc is phenomenal, and when he sings in a Dylan-mode as on Seven Days, Ronnie is actually quite effective. Unfortunately, he doesn't fare quite so well in an R&B style. Overall, if you can hack the shortcomings, this album is a good souvenir of a fun little tour.

I think for those of us who remember the late 70s as the last period of true genius for Keef Riff Hard and his twin brother Ronnie Wood, this release is long overdue. I've passed on bootlegs of this for years waiting for the official release to come out. There was a lot of buzz about these shows in the late 70s. So for us old-timers there is serious nostalgia going on with this release. The riffs and licks on this CD are Keith and Ronnie at their sloppy drunk best. Truely hard core rock and roll for the time. Not missing Jagger one bit. This CD is worth every penny of the $30 I spent.

As a serious guitar player for 25+ years who has played in several bands, I love the way Woody and Keith play guitar. I buy all their solo albums just to hear their unique styles and riffs. Keith's riffs in open tunings are something to admire. You really have to play a lot to play like that in open tunings with such ease and to make up such cool sounding riffs. Ronnie is just a great standard tuning player who plays a mean slide as well. I realize songwriting, lyrics and choir boy vocals are not their forte. It's the riffs and unadulterated rock and roll that gets me going. If that's not your bag, tune into "American Idol" or "Making the Band".

One reviewer here opined that Brian Jones and Mick Taylor were better guitarists. In my opinion, they are different guitarists. Woody is no slouch. Taylor was a great virtuoso and I loved his long guitar solos on the Stones tours and bootlegs of the early 70s. He's more like Clapton in that way. Ron Wood, of course is more like Keith Richards in that he is one of the great rock masters of hooks, riffs and fills. Brian Jones was a terrific and under rated blues guitarist for his time who could learn to play any instrument in short time. Genius in that regard. But I'd have to say Ron Wood has proven to be better in his time than Jones.

Recommendation: If you love the way Keith and Ronnie play guitar, this is a must have CD. If you simply want some insight into Stones history in the late 70s, you might like this CD. If you remember these shows and this time, it may be a nice trip down memory lane and worth the purchase price just for that. If you have to hear Jagger and must have a big production and 20 piece band with back up singers like they have done on recent tours then stay away from this CD. You would be better off with the cheesy live Licks CD from the 2002-3 tour.

Despite just loving the song, "Stay With Me," I only hope that I'm permitted to live long enough to know of someone going up to Ron Wood, taking his guitar away from him (hopefully by force) and saying, "Now, Woody, you jus' go'n grow some mold or something." This thing is EL-SUCKO. True, I will purchase most anything that has Keith Richards on it - WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THAT GUNK W/"U2" - and, as a pretty decent bass player myself, it is my humble opinion that Stanley Clarke is second ONLY to Jaco. But even THEIR presense makes one opine, "They don't contribute enuf to this thing t' make it worth it, the effort involved in just drowning out the unmitigated noise that R Wood regurgitates on this thing." Said it before, and I'll say it again: KEEF NEEDS A >BLONDE < GUITARIST to bounce off of and work with: dig - Brian Jones...Mick Taylor...and "recently," Wino-Waddy Wachtel.

modern day classic... somewhat of a concept album, both artists have really shined in this and shown why they possess the reputations they do... all the beats are solid and virtually all the lyrics are great, with only 2 or three skippable songs, even if just barely, out of 16 or so...
i'm SOOOO incredibly please i purchased this...
2 jugganaughts together can't be stopped... one sets em up, and one knocks em down!

Hot beats funny rhymes. If you are not some backpacker purist, you will like the album. They become pimps/macks on this one. If you know Zone, you know that he is far from a mack. That is what makes this such a good CD. Two non macks kick mack rhymes. Pick it up. You will laugh and enjoy the CD.

Straight Hoggin'.......2006-05-14

Funny as hell, this album should be under the comedy section at the record shop. Zone & Celph do all but 1 song on production so you know the beats are correct and lyrics are just too much from Hog Hop to The Weight Debate. In my opinion a true underground masterpeice as far as dirty storytelling lyrics. Check out the tracks Hog Hop, You Got Mail, Rev. Getright, $teady $mobbin, The Weight Debate(laugh your @$$ off} and the ridiculous flow on Celph Destruction. A must for the Demigodz, Apathy, or Kool Keith fan.

Classic.......2006-07-06

I can see why other reviewers panned this release. However, to those who were teenagers at the time and into rock and roll, this music has some validity. I remember when these guys came out. For me, they were just as rebellious as the Stones. The songs hold up extremely well. Although the playing is not all that great, its a case of "atmosphere" over ability (their take on Memphis a case in point). The choice of material was very interesting (the haunting Marie Elena next to the relentless Bo Diddily, for instance). Their set was quite representative of the contemporary underground scene at the time. For that reason it has value. I believe this album, like the Shadows of Knight albums, accurately reflects mid-sixties Brit influenced punk/R&B rock. My 5 star rating is based on their impact on me, an impressionable 13 year old wanna be musician. Oh, well, guess you had to be there. If you were, pick this album up for a trip back to a time and place you might have forgotten.. If not, you might not appreciate it.

This is utter rubbish. Perfect example that not everything coming from 1960's garage band/babyboomer teens was terrific. Only for the long-hair hippie, dope-smokin' types. Very frankly gross.

Thin and disappointing.......2003-12-21

The Barbarians had the classic wild garage band image, with long hair and their one-handed drummer Moulty. For the most part though, the music on the original album was not particularly rocking, and mediocre. Also, none of the songs were written by the group. The low points include anemic covers of well-known material like 'Mr. Tambourine Man' and 'House of the Rising Sun.' The #55 charting 'Are You a Boy Or Are You a Girl' was a catchy novelty tune that (contrary to what another reviewer said) was poking fun at the conservative adults of the time who mocked youngsters with long hair, in a lightweight and humorous fashion. The Barbarians themselves could not have been taking aim at the British invasion groups, because the Barbarians (and especially Moulty) had longer hair than almost everyone at the time. Furthermore, the song's progress up the charts was hindered by uneven marketing, making it a bigger hit in New England and the rest of the east coast than in other parts of the country. The follow up record 'What the New Breed Say' was a fair song with rebellious lyrics that stalled at the #102 position. Aside from the repetitive slow rocker 'Take It or Leave It' and the ballad 'I'll Be Seeing You,' the rest of the album was filled with covers of well-known songs that were at best only average. The Sundazed reissue added three bonus tracks. Reaching #90, 'Moulty' was the group's third single, and quite an odd single for a garage band to release. 'Moulty' was on the sappy side, but nevertheless had some appealing qualities in the over-enthusiastic backing vocals, heavy instrumentation and positive message. The 45 was released against their will, and was the reason behind the band unceremoniously leaving Laurie Records. The remaining bonus tracks made up their 1964 Joy 45 'You've Got To Understand/Hey Little Bird.' 'Hey Little Bird' is arguably the Barbarians finest (and certainly most rocking) cut. It is also ahead of it's time being one of the earliest garage rock recordings - combining the energetic and crude American garage style with British invasion influence. 'Hey Little Bird' was also one of the earliest recordings prominently to feature the fuzz guitar. Also of note, the Barbarians played 'Hey Little Bird' on their T.A.M.I. show appearance. The Sundazed reissue is recommended, because the group had some cuts worth hearing, and everything released under their name is on that reissue. The Sundazed album also has good liner notes and track information. (2 stars for original album, 3 for the reissue)

I'm a BOY!.......2003-05-06

This is a RATHER poorly done bunch of tunes. Bad vocals...NO REALLY BAD vocals ..off key..total failure at harmonizing. I can't believe nobody in the studio told them how painful the vocals were. The song choices were bad. "TITLE" track and their HIT "Are you a boy or are you a girl?"....is a great tune. better quality than the other LIVE, badly mixed songs on the record. The only thing that saves this record is the guitar.I was stunned to hear Marie Elena. First of all I couldn't imagine how it was on the record with the other tunes ..it is a GREAT CHET ATKINS style.. finger picking instrumental.. EXCELLENT guitar.. even by today's standards. Suzie Q solo was excellent also...makes you think George Harrison was in the studio. The other solos are typical 60's twangy..very good ...
Moulty?? well I really feel bad for the guy and CAN'T imagine how he must have suffered thru his accident .. and loosing his hand is just unreal.. BUT the tune MOULTY ??? Oh my GOD It's right out of FRANK ZAPPA's "hey punk where you going with those beads around your neck ..?" laughably hoaky attempt at a tear jerker tune... " hey man..I need me a girl... a real girl ." as opposed to what? the blow up doll kinda girl ? Buy it to laugh at the vocals. Guitar players buy it for the very good 60's guitar solo's.

Nice job, Sundazed.......2000-09-01

Outstanding compilation of The Barbarians' tracks. Listen to the roots of the punk-movement, plus some excellent instrumentals from the days when recording was actually spontaneous. "Moulty" is a classic track, a gem, and Moulty of The Barbarians is an awesome drummer and a gentleman to boot!

The World Seen from the Edge of the Green Cliffs.......2001-03-04

This is wonderful music. Lopes down smooth roads to oceansides, over hot pavement through American deserts and stops to pick rocks from the soles of shoes with a popsicle stick. This is truly the America that we as Americans think we still are. Richard Davies captures it perfectly. Wonderful.

Indie folk-pop.......2000-07-25

Unfortunately, compared to Crowd, Barbarians sounds like a group of songs recorded quickly, before their possibilities were fully explored and exploited. The songwriting is still there, but the extra care and refinement that made Crowd so rewarding has been replaced by a more one-dimensional sound: changing electric guitars, fewer counter melodies, harmonies that teeter, and simpler, more staid rock arrangements.

Crafty Pop in an Uncle Sam Hat.......2000-07-02

Another fine collection of Richard Davies songs. This album continues his progression toward a more traditional pop sound and song structure. However, there is still much nuance and charm, but nothing like the artsy Cardinal album or his first solo album "There's Never Been a Crowd Like This".

One thing I don't understand is the cover art and album title. The cover depicts an Uncle Sam hat with the album title below it: "Barbarians". It seems strange that a young man would leave his native Australia to come live in a country he felt to be barbaric. Perhaps he had something else in mind(?). Whatever...bottom line is that this album is certainly no disappointment, and a worthy addition to your Davies collection.

another eccentric delight from the aussie ex-pat.......2000-06-30

i like to think of davies as an aussie andy partridge, though he may have more in common with fellow aussie robert forster of the go-betweens. "barbarians" is not quite as good as his last two efforts, "there's never been a crowd" and the terrific "telegraph", but mostly because, at 33 minutes and change, there's less of it to enjoy. It's also not quite as consistent as those records, but "palo alto" and "stars" alone are worth the price of admission. Definitely an artist worth supporting. And check out his obscure aussie band "the moles" and his partnership with eric matthews in the band "cardinal".

Good garage.......2006-06-20

A fun album, with the classic track MOULTY, as well as the hit ARE YOU A BOY, OR ARE YOU A GIRL. Please note that on this reissue (One Way), there are only 13 tracks (HEY LITTLE BIRD and YOU'VE GOT TO UNDERSTAND are not on this CD); if you want the 15-track reissue, you'll need the Sundazed edition.

I give it 2 1/2 stars.I ended up waiting awhile before getting my hands on a copy of this sole lp reissue by The Barbarians,a short lived(1964-66)garage rock&roll band from Cape Cod,MA.Maybe it was my strong anticipation for this 'Are You A Boy...' disc,but I was a bit let down.Seems that the band itself didn't pen out any of the album's material here.Several decent tracks are present,like the title cut "Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl?",their covers of Dylan's "Mr.Tambourine Man",their half-hearted cover of the Animal's "House Of The Rising Sun","Bo Diddley"(they actually do a good job)and "Suzy Q".Then there's a ditty about their one-hand drummer "Moulty" which is okay.Several super-lame instrumentals seem to deter from the overall appeal of this CD,I thought.I plan to keep my copy.It's just that 'Are You...' could have been SO much better.Outside of a few TV appearances and their gig on 'The T.A.M.I. Show',I doubt many would even remember these guys.Line-up:Jeff Morris and Bruce Bensen-guitars,Jerry Causi-bass and Victor Moulton(aka Moulty)-drums&vocals.Might appeal to fans of The Outcasts,The Seeds,?&The Mysterians and Count Five.
