I was first drawn to this CD by the stratospheric prices commanded on auction sites for "A Man With Money" by A Wild Uncertainty. Surely this is a creatively named group, but was the song that good? I was delighted to find it comped on this increasingly hard to find collection. And, since the song appears near the end of the CD, I was given the opportunity to listen to much other music along my path to quench my ear's appetite.
This is a delightful and amazing CD. Planet Records was the baby of Shel Talmy, the original producer of the Who. Although I followed British music closely at the time these songs were recorded, I admit I never heard of most of these bands, and neither did you, I will wager. For example, a female act named "Perpetual Langley" - that surely outdoes "Wild Uncertainty" for creative naming.
This CD has many great things going for it. The songs are all quite listenable. The first artist, Dave Helling, probably takes the biggest stretches vocally (think Michael Nesmith after listening to several Nick Drake records) but the lushness of the background orchestration keeps everything perfectly balanced. The second noticable item here is, a rarity among compilations, BOTH SIDES of many rare 45's are included. For example, "Broken Truth" the B-Side of "A Man With Money." There are some nicely done covers - The Gnomes of Zurich (here we go again!) doing Tommy Edwards "Please Mr Sun" and The Untamed with a very faithful version of the Who's "It's Not True." Despite the diversity of the acts, the whole thing functions within a concise stylistic band. Back to the question; is "Man With Money" that good? Oh yes, but so are lots of other inclusions. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A MAJOR FAVOR AND HEAR THIS.
