There have been plenty of attempts to anthologize this venerable Southern band's extensive catalog, but this is the first one to get it right. Spreading 32 tracks from just over 30 years of albums across two discs, the immaculately sequenced compilation plays like a well-conceived piece. From the flute-dominated "Take the Highway," the opening cut of their 1973 debut, the Marshall Tucker Band avoided the typical Southern-boogie-rockin'-guitar path later epitomized by their more rowdy brethren the Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Molly Hatchet. Rather, Tucker presented a more laid-back, country-based approach, highlighted by the jazzy playing of woodwind player Jerry Eubanks and drummer Paul Riddle.Although the Capricorn/Warner Bros. decade that ended in 1983 accounts for the bulk of these selections, the last half of the second disc presents a revamped lineup led by sole original member/lead singer Doug Gray, continuing the musical legacy with remarkably engaging results. The 24-page booklet featuring a detailed history, a live CD-ROM track, and crisply remastered sound further enhance the experience that finally bestows upon this underrated band the comprehensive, classy, and long-overdue retrospective it deserves. --Hal Horowitz

While the Allman Brothers Band garnered the majority of attention during their four-decade careers, their contemporaries in Southern rock the Marshall Tucker Band have been more quietly, but just as consistently, making quality music. Only vocalist Doug Gray remains from the original sextet, yet the group's sound hasn't changed substantially, as their breezy mix of jazz, blues, and country doesn't need updating to remain fresh. Their unlikely emphasis on flute defined a style that was lighter and less boogie-oriented than most of the harder-driving acts of their era. Perhaps not surprisingly, age has mellowed them even further, and this album's one rocker, "Travelin' Man," seems forced next to the warm melodic roots and country twang that otherwise dominate. Gray's graying vocals have lost a bit of steam, but the band sounds terrific, and most of the songs glow like burnished gold. The somewhat clichéd topics of music, cowboys, horses, and the road appear, but when the elements mesh, as on "Cold Steel," "The Guitar Playing Man," and "Crossroad," favorable comparisons can be made with some of the band's finest. Coming this late in the Marshall Tucker Band's career, that's an unlikely and impressive feat. --Hal HorowitzCustomer Reviews:

The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01
GREAT Album.......2007-03-28
GREAT DEBUT ALBUM FROM THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND........2007-03-09
THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for being one of the original pioneers to found and create Southern Rock music. This legendary band would join the ranks of such fellow legendary artists as THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND and LYNYRD SKYNYRD in combining a rare mixture of Country music and Rock n' Roll to create a rare special blend Southern Rock sound that would forever change the sound of Rock n' Roll forever. However, THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND would try to add the flute sound like the legendary band JETHRO TULL and try to combine it with the Southern Rock sound to give it a more rich and raw sound not heard before. Several bands including THE ROLLING STONES would play this rare sound and revolutionize the Southern Rock sound to its fullest potential. When original lead vocalist and frontman Doug Gray met up and joined forces with original members Toy Caldwell on lead guitar, the late great Tommy Caldwell on bass, Paul Riddle on drums, George McCorkle on rhythm guitar and Jerry Eubanks on flute and keyboards, THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND would be born and would help in playing the Southern Rock music sound that would forever raise the south and make the south proud. In my opinion, "THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND" is a true testament of six talented individuals and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was indeed, ahead of their time.
Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary album begins with the beautiful breathtaking Country Rocker "Take The Highway," the forever beautiful MARSHALL TUCKER trademark slow acoustic Country Rocker in its original long version, "Can't You See," the slow beautiful rugged Country Rocker "Losing You," the breathtaking fast paced Country Rocker "Hillbilly Band," the slow groundbreaking Country Rocker "See You Later, I'm Gone," the blistering action pacted fast paced sizzling Country Rocker "Ramblin'," the slow beautiful merciless Country Rocker "My Jesus Told Me So" and one minute fifteen second acoustic number "AB's Song." May I also add that Toy Caldwell kicks a*s on lead guitar and delivers some of the most devastating guitar licks and riffs in Rock n' Roll history. Doug Gray's blistering lead vocals are so emotional that he sizzles and takes the music to another level. Jerry Eubanks plays some of the most beautiful sounds out of his flute that I have ever heard.
Overall, this is one hell of an album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a newcomer and a new beginner to the sound and music of THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND. However, there are greatest hits packages by this legendary band that you might want to research further into and purchase along with or besides this album. I do know for fact that the first greatest hits album that THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND released in 1978 did not include the full long length version of "Can't You See" which is my most favorite MARSHALL TUCKER song of all of their songs.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one MARSHALL TUCKER album that all devout music collector's would not want to be without.
In closing, following the success of the self-titled debut album "THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND" from 1973, THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND has enjoyed success and fame which has lasted to this very day. However, there has been changes in the band personnel through the years such as the current line-up comprising of lead singer and frontman Doug Gray, David Muse (Founding member of the legendary band FIREFALL.) on flute, saxophone and keyboards, Stuart Swanlund on slide guitar, Chris Hicks on guitar, Pat Elwood on bass and B.B. Borden on drums. Despite changing personnel in the band, the MARSHALL TUCKER trademark Southern Rock sound is still alive and intact. With this in mind, I know for fact that we have not seen or heard the last of THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND, this band just plain refuses to fade away. I guess that it is safe to say that THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND has forever left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you original members Doug, the late great Tommy, Toy, Paul, George and Jerry. Also the current members Doug, David, Stuart, B.B., Pat and Chris. Thanks for the memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND RULES. R.I.P. TOMMY CALDWELL. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

Album Description
Old West dreams meet Southern memories in the tracks of Searchin' for a Rainbow, The Marshall Tucker Band's fourth album. Released in 1975, this song collection found the group refining its multi-faceted sound into an appealing country-rock essence. Still present were the jazz and blues-based elements that had always made Marshall Tucker a distinctive unit. By dressing up their music in Western garb, the band found a way to reach a huge new audienceall it took was a little "Fire On The Mountain" to light the way. "We'd found a bit more direction on how to design songs for a record," says lead singer Doug Gray. "Our record company Capricorn had always said, `Try to give us something that would work on the radio.' We tried to do that, and at the same time please each other. We were known as a jamming band. This was the first time we really tried to give them Marshall Tucker's interpretation of what a hit song was." Helping to spur things on was "Fire On The Mountain," the lead track off Searchin' for a Rainbow. Released as a single in the fall of '75, the tune reached #38 on the pop charts. A vivid, Old West, lyric-storyline combined with bluegrass-tinged instrumental licks and an ear-grabbing chorus brought Marshall Tucker its first Top 40 hit.Customer Reviews:

I was around for the advent of Southern Rock and saw both The Marshall Tucker Band performing these two albums and The Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East as the second opening act, behind the Elvin Bishop Group, for Johnny Winter And. I'm just happy that I was able to replace these treasures with CDs. I'll always miss my vinyl, but am very glad that even though I won't have the sentiment of the original record albums, that I can still have the priviledge of enjoying the great music in what is now a much higher quality format.

Commercial peak; artistic valley.......2004-09-21
Like most Marshall Tucker albums, the original album was fairly short at 37 minutes. This new release includes a bonus track, a 4 minute live version of Silverado, so this CD is 41 minutes long. When you have a CD that is that short, every track had better be great.
There are only two really great songs, Heard it in A Love Song and Never Trust a Stranger. Desert Skies and Fly Like an Eagle are merely just good songs. Tell It To the Devil and Life in a Song are only fair. The one long number, I Should Have Never Started Loving You, is repititious and just grates on too long. It would have been much better cut in half (and I love long songs).
It is good to see that the whole Marshall Tucker catalog is being remastered and re-issued. The first CD releases, the sound was flat. And then, they were completely unavailable for some time.
About a year or so ago, someone was selling all of Marshall Tucker's master tapes on ebay. They had the masters to all the studio recordings plus hundreds of hours of live material. But, they did not own the lisence to this material, so you couldn't produce to the material until you worked out a lisencing agreement.
The group's bassist, Tommy Caldwell, died in 1980. The group broke up in 1983, with the leader, Toy Caldwell, going off an doing a solo act for some time. He died in 1993. The lead singer, Doug Gray, created a whole new Marshall Tucker Band, that played country and gospel music. I did not like what I have heard from the new band.

Album Description
The Marshall Tucker Band arrived at a crossroads on its third album, Where We All Belong. With two successful LPs already under their belt, the Spartanburg, SC sextet was on the verge of even greater popularity. Marshall Tucker's eclectic brand of musical Americana had won them a fervent following as a touring act. Nowthanks to lead guitarist Toy Caldwell's knack for hook-laden songwritingthey were edging closer to breaking into Top 40 radio.Where We All Belong gives a taste of both ends of the Marshall Tucker spectrum: the expansive jam band and the more tightly-focused recording act. Released in 1974 as a two-record LP, the album found the band refining its own distinctive brand of country-rock on the studio cuts.
Anticipating the mass appeal of cowboy culture a few years later, Toy and his band adopted a bit of a Wild West attitude in their music. For all the prominence of pedal steel guitar and down-home lyric imagery in its tracks, though, Where We All Belong was far more adventuresome than most mainstream country music of its time.
Balancing the well-honed studio cuts were the in-concert recordings that round out the album. The genre-spanning versatility and instrumental excellence of Marshall Tucker's membership is caught here in all its unfettered glory. As a live act, the band had the power to drive audiences delirious with their soaring jams, as these recordings demonstrate.

The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01
Where is it exactly that we all belong?.......2007-03-24
Fortunately, the music contained within is better than one would expect from the awful cover art. The songs on the studio set aren't as strong as the ones on their debut, but they're all well-played. Toy Caldwell is truly an excellent guitar player. "This Ol Cowboy" is of course a wonderful song - perhaps my favorite of theirs - and definitely the best song on the album. "Low Down Ways", "In My Own Way," and "Try One More Time" are all highlights. But, as you can probably tell from the titles of the songs, they're all rather ordinary both musically and lyrically and don't really cover new ground.
I have to admit, I'm not really a fan of this kind of music. I don't like jam bands, and I don't like flutes either. However, the live set is very good, great versions of "Ramblin on My Mind", "24 Hours at a Time," amd "Take the Highway." However, as blazing as "24 Hours at a Time" is, with Charlie Daniels on fiddle, I really think it's too long and gets too far out there. And what's with the bass solo? That really ruins the song (thank god they didn't decide to do a drum solo). "Everyday I have the Blues" really takes a page out of the Allman Brothers book, especially during Toy's solo when the band comes in (sounds suspiciously like the Allman's version of "Stormy Monday"). Of course, MTB only sounds like the Allmans on this one track -a B.B. King song - because their material is much more country than the Allmans, who are more blues than anything.
Overall, then, this is a solid album, but it is hardly a masterpiece, and MTB seems to be covering old territory, though of course they do offer the whole cowboy thing, kind of new at the time. But the jam band stuff has already been done better by the Dead and the Allmans, tho Toy Caldwell's guitar playing rivals that of Jerry Garcia or Duane Allman. So, if you're into jam bands or Southern rock, you'll probably like this. I find it kind of boring, and not as good as their first album.

Album Description
It sounds like the plot of a classic Western saga: Six young men ride out of the South Carolina uplands seeking fame and adventure, dazzling crowds and creating a legend along the way. Actually, the above scenario describes The Marshall Tucker Band's rise to mass popularity in the mid-1970s. Like true Sunday-matinee cowboy heroes, the band made it thanks to a restless spirit and a tender heart, blazing a country-rock trail for later artists to follow.Long Hard Ride, Marshall Tucker's 1976 album, came on the heels of their first Top 40 radio hit, "Fire On The Mountain." Striving to build upon this breakthrough, they delivered an album that mixed country, rock and blues into a distinctive whole. A good number of the tunes were radio-friendly numbers that reined in the band's jamming tendencies. But the individual playing styles that made Marshall Tucker unique clearly shone through, making Long Hard Ride a worthy addition to their catalogue.
