Progressive New Wave.......2007-05-28

Released in 1980, this came out when artistic music was moving from a progressive rock sound to new wave. This album reflects that transition.

Released before CD technology, this album is 45 minutes long. The sound quality of the original CD was OK. But, I can see (hear) where this remastered version might be somewhat better.

This is Gabriel's third solo album. Like all previous two albums, the title is simply "Peter Gabriel". People would call it "Melt" because of his slurred picture and to distinquish it from the earlier two albums. Gabriel's fourth album would also be title "Peter Gabriel" everywhere in the world, except the US, where it would be called "Security".

This album has a transitional sound between progressive rock and new wave. It sounds a lot like the new wave music that would be comeing out of the UK in the early eighties, especiall Tears For Fears.

Many people consider this to be Gabriel's best album. But, I think it sounds a bit dated, especially when you compare it to the sensational So. Still I think it is a very good album.

Gabriel does begin to show the marks of maturity and significant song writing with Biko. This is the type of song and music he would carry on in future albums.

Other than stating the obvious that this is a masterpiece, a landmark, Gabriel at his solo best, the only thing that prevents me from giving it 5 stars (what it truely deserves) is even though the recording is clear with excellent soundstaging, its lacking in base extension. One might disagree and say that there is a lot of base and yes there is, but it's all in the upper base. There is none in the lower registers. This takes away some of the power and authority that this music demands. But taken into perspective of the greatness of this music, it's a minor nit pic.

"Peter Gabriel" (3, 1980) is a pretty fine introduction to Peter Gabriel's solo career, and there are some great tracks, with contributions by some fine musicians (Phil Collins on drums in "Intruder", Robert Fripp on guitar in "I Don't Remember", Tony Levin on bass, Kate Bush doing backup vocals on "No Self Control, etc). It's got a big sound, and it's worth a listen. It's not my favorite album though, there's just something about it that is a little offputting in the way some of the tracks go, though I can't quite say what it is.

My favorite tracks would have to be "Intruder" which is pretty creepy, "No Self Control" (especially the middle bit), the bittersweet instrumental "Start", the upbeat "I Don't Remember" and the tragic buildup of "Family Snapshot". Basically the first half of the album I really like. "Games Without Frontiers" isn't too bad either.

The booklet of the remaster contains full lyrics and images from the era of the album.

Peter Gabriel - His Best Solo Album.......2007-04-05

To me this is the album where Gabriel really got it together as a solo artist. In my opinion it is his best solo work with rock solid material throughout the whole thing. From a songwriting perspective the album contains some of Gabriel's best lyrics and the music, although not as dynamic as his Genesis days, comes across as a perfect fit with the dramatic vocals and lyrics. Musically the thing that really stands out on this disc is the percussion. Gabriel made the decision that his drummers would not use any cymbals on this disc which lends the percussion a unique quality. The drumming duties were shared by Jerry Marotta and Phil Collins consistently coming across as loud and booming, a style that Gabriel would incorporate throughout the rest of his career. The overall percussion work on this disc is really outstanding. The album also sees Gabriel making his first forays into "world" music, which he would explore in much more detail later in his career. Once again, the tribal percussion aspect of these tracks is a highlight. The songs on the album are consistently great. Highlights include the album opener "Intruder" a truly creepy song about a burglar who obviously loves his job. Next is "No Self-Control", another great song that pretty much describes periods of my own life. "I Don't Remember" was an AOR hit and a great little rocker with that booming drum sound. "Family Snapshot" seems to be a portrait of a presidential assassin (Lee Harvey Oswald maybe?) until the song gets to the final few lines where we find out that it is really just a young child playing a fantasy in his own mind, in desperate need of attention. Is this a foreshadowing of what the child will be as an adult? The song is a prime example of Gabriel at his absolute best. "And Through The Wire" could possibly be a sequel to "On The Air" from the previous album. "Games Without Frontiers" was another AOR radio hit that reduces the act of war to a children's game. It is another brilliant track. "Not One Of Us" can be related to by anyone who has been considered an outsider and is another great track. The album closes with "Biko" which presents an historical account of the death of South African freedom fighter Stephen Biko who was killed while imprisoned. It is a powerful piece of music that resonates to this day. Gabriel 3 is the man at his absolute best. If you are looking to explore Gabriel's solo albums this would be a great place to start. Personally I do not think he has done anything better.

I love Intruder, my favorite track. One of my favorite early Peter Gabriel Albums.

The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.

Very Relaxing Music.......2006-09-11

I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

So I'm just learning violin..........2006-09-21

and I can not play like Joshua Bell. For this, he better consider himself damn lucky as the world could not handle two of us Joshua Bells.

This was my first exposure to this phenom. Sorry, I had never heard of him until I got my first issue of STRINGS magazine and he was on the cover. My wife liked the cover and wanted to know if I got better would I not only sound like him but would I also look like him? I guess we'll never know how that will actually turn out. Safe to say, I'll end up not looking like him as I can never be quite as good as him. Again, damn lucky for Josh as I don't think the world could handle two of us.

This disc is an absolute gem not only for the Joshua Bell and violin fan, but the arrangements and the sound quality is superb. What this disc made me realize is that there are truly only a few out there that have complete and total control of their craft. It also made me decide that I would like to perhaps pick up a few more Joshua Bell recordings. For my wife, I guess I'll just duplicate them and give the copies to her in a blank cd case. I can tell her it's me playing. That ought to heat things up!

This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before.

The finest music for guitar and orchestra NEVER written.......2003-03-25

Here excellent Naxos guitarist Gerald Garcia (check out his "Latin American Guitar Festival" and "Brazilian Portrait" CDs) teams up with conductor/arranger Peter Breiner to produce a highly enjoyable collection of music for guitar and orchestra.

Here Breiner takes some of the best known piano works of Debussy and Satie, plus some items from Faure's orchestral output, and presents them in lush original arrangements for guitar and orchestra. The arrangements work best when they are simple. On a few they're a bit over the top, and for that the recording loses one star, but for the most part Breiner provides fine backings for Garcia's beautiful and sensitive playing.

Highlights include the two Satie "Gymnopedies", Debussy's "Le Fille Auz Cheveux de lin", "Arabesque", and "Reverie", and Faure's "Pavane" and "Sicilienne": all beautifully played and arranged.

Are you ever searching for a great, relaxing, classical album that has more than just a single composer such as Chopin or Vivaldi? This is the album for you. Great classical composers all together on one album that can help soothe the day's stresses away. Great from start to finish and one of my favorites in my collection of classical music.

A Fine Way to Spend One's Evening.......2005-06-14

To start, I'll say my family (with the possible exception of my sister) is a fan of classical music. I was raised on Mozart adagios and Beethoven symphonies. When I came across this album in my parents collection not long ago, I began to listen quite avidly to it. The "Air on G String from Orchestral Suite 3, BWV 1068" is quite probably my favorite JS Bach pieces (probably due to its usage in "End of Evangelion") and the "Canon in D" has long inspired emotional scenes in my novels. While I'm sure many disagree, I find other recordings of the piece less emotional from my experience.

I rarely listen to the second half of the CD (my favorites are in the first quarter of the album), but all are relaxing and have excellent tone. The one piece I do not enjoy is the Vivaldi's Lute Concerto in D. For some reason, the sound of a classical guitar doesn't lull me into relaxation.

Overall, a very relaxing CD with great voice.

Nice CD for the office, or the ride home from work.......2005-03-25

A quite nice collection of classical favorites, including Bach's "Air on a G String" played by the ever-talented Academy of St.-Martin-in-The-Fields and Borodin's "Nocturne from String Quartet. Of course they didn't leave out everyone's favorites - Pachelbel's "Canon" and Rachamaninoff's "Rhapsody on a THeme of Paganini" which would alone make this CD worth buying. Nice easy listening for in the car or your office cube.

Choral music by the Cambridge Singers is always top-notch. An older album that might have sounded better with newer technology but no complaints. Has great vocals and orchestral support.

Great choir, but mostly recycled material.......2005-12-16

I have the utmost respect for John Rutter and his Cambridge Singers, probably the best choir in the world (at least, the English-speaking world). I have almost all their CDs. Two of their Christmas CDs are "desert-island" class for this listener.

Unfortunately, I cannot give this otherwise excellent CD the same high marks. If they wanted to release a "best of Cambridge Christmas" CD, this would not be it. It does a few of the absolute best Christmas selections, including Sweelinck's "Hodie", Willcocks's breathtaking arrangement of "The Infant King", and Rutter's own quirky reading of "Personent Hodie". And it does contain a few tracks not previously released.

However, if you want the best of Cambridge and Christmas, start with "Christmas Night", which is always the first CD I pull out the day after Thanksgiving. The sound of the famliar Persall setting of "In Dulci Jubilo" sets my holiday in motion. And that CD also has Rutter's own magical "There is a flower". After that CD, get "Christmas with the Cambridge Singers", which has "The Infant King" and some other treasures.

So, you can't really go wrong with this CD, especially if you just want an introduction to how this fine ensemble addresses the most choir-friendly holiday of all. But if you're serious about getting all the good stuff, start with the other two mentioned above, then add "Christmas Day in the Morning" and the early "Christmas Star".

Glittering Chrismas Music.......2005-11-15

I own virtually all of the CD's of John Rutter (whom I greatly admire) and the Cambridge Singers, and I am a fan of English Choral music in general. If I were asked to recommend only one of the many Cambridge Singers Christmas albums, or indeed one of any English Christmas album, a hard choice, this would be it. As others have noted, this CD is a compilation of songs from previous cds with four new releases. It is, I believe, longer playing than the other Cambridge albums. In style, it is a mostly quiet sounding collection--in fact several carols are sung a cappella-- with pieces ranging from carols such as "The Holly and the Ivy" to the more robust "Fantasia on Christmas Carols". In sum, this is a sensitively arranged and performed collection of beautiful Christmas music.

The Spirit of Christmas On CD.......2005-06-02

I have never been disappointed by any Cambridge Singers release, so it isnt surprising that I thoroughly enjoyed this offering as well. This CD is a compilation of songs from previous cds with one or two new tracks, so check your library to make sure you arent duplicating your collection in the order to complete your collection. I purchased this disk to obtain a copy of the Fantasia On Christmas Carols by Ralph Vaughn Williams which was originally released on Christmas Day In The Morning. As usual, every song is performed in a precise yet heartfelt manner. If you dont own any cds by the Cambridge singers I would personally recommend Christmas Night as the first disk to own, but if you know and love the Cambridge Singers as I do, then you will enjoy having this wonderful addition to your library.

Superb voices!.......2003-12-22

This CD was beautifully sung by the Cambridge Singers, a boys/mens choir, mostly a' capela. It's the first Christmas CD I've bought that really tempts me to crank up the volume so I can revel in every note.

this was one of the best assortment of classical holiday songs that i have ever heard. it contains a marvelous array of the best composers and performers that the world has to offer. if you are a fan of classical music, i think this cd will be a positive addition to your music collection

What a delightful surprise this 2 disc album was and I'm not a big fan of Christmas music. I loved all the selections and felt they were well performed. This is a true "must have" for any Christmas collection. Superior to many other compliations on the market. This one is a keeper! It is the one album I'll pick first to listen to after Thanksgiving.

Great CD. The reviewer who calls him/herself POCOCAT says he/she is an opera singer. Wonder how much work an uninformed singer gets?
A "fast spinning" vibrato,as you describe Ms. Price, is not the same as a wide vibrato. The former is a speed issue, the latter a width issue. Therefore, 4 variables exist: fast, slow, wide, slim. Thus, 4 types of voice exist: fast/wide, fast/slim, slow/wide, and slow/slim. Most often a singer leans toward fast/slim or slow/wide, in varying degrees. A matter of taste, yes, but learn more about the voice before you expound.

This truly is a great album for a Sunday morning. I bought it after a recent morning I spent with my boyfriend; we made tea, ate breakfast, cuddled and napped, but I wanted some relaxing classical tunes to put on. I stumbled across this, and it certainly fits the bill.

I also liked that it had a good mix of familiar songs and ones I hadn't heard before. Selections include "Morning" and "Anitra's Dance" by Grieg, "Serenade for Strings in E Major" by Dvorak, "Sunday Morning" by Britten, "Pavane" by Faure, "Seventeen Come Sunday" by Vaughan Williams, "Air on a G String" by Bach, "Morgenblatter" by Strauss, "The Dargason" by Holst, "Prelude a l'Apres-Midi d'un Faune" by Debussy, and "En Bateau" and "Sicilienne" by Faure.

The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?
