Peter Gabriel - Leaves Genesis And Strikes Out On His Own.......2007-04-04
This was the first solo album for Peter Gabriel after leaving Genesis the previous year. The album found Peter moving in a new direction while still holding on to some of the prog elements that had made him famous. He scored an AOR hit with the bouncy "Solsubury Hill" a song about his departure from his former band. I don't think that this is Gabriel's best solo album, but it does serve as a very nice jumping off point for what would become a storied solo career. For Genesis fans there is prog to be found here. "Moribund The Burgermieister" would have fit right in on "Selling England By The Pound. "Down The Dolce Vita" is an orchestral rocker that would have been perfectly at home on "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". There is also pop / rock represented by songs like "Modern Love". This song was the second single released from the album, but went no where on the charts. Playful whimsy is also represented with "Excuse Me" which almost sounds Zappa-ish to my ears. Two of the highlights of the album are ballads. "Humdrum" is a great little tune and the album closer "Here Comes The Flood" ranks up with the very best material Gabriel has written. He opened his "Up" concert tour with a solo rendition of this song that was truly magical. Overall this is a strong debut from the former Genesis singer, and hints at the many directions Gabriel's career would take in the coming decades.
"Wind Was Blowing, Time Stood Still".......2007-03-26
"Peter Gabriel" (1977) was Peter Gabriel's first solo album after leaving "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"-era Genesis. It's got a pretty unique atmosphere, I think. Sort of dusty. It's got a great little booklet too, this remaster, with pretty much full lyrics and some photo related odds and ends from the era.
My favorite tracks would have to be: "Moribund the Burgermeister" (kind of reminds me of what Genesis would have been like if Peter had stayed), "Solsbury Hill" (though I've always loved that one, growing up with it), "Down the Dolce Vita" (with a big orchestra and a guitar part that sounds a bit like Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger"), "Modern Love" (which has a catchy rhythm) and "Humdrum" (which has a beautifully dramatic ending). "Here Comes the Flood" is taking a while to grow on me, though I do like it. "Slowburn" is a pretty colourful track that I love as well. That took me quite a few listens to get into.
Worth a listen for Genesis fans looking forward and solo Peter Gabriel fans looking back.
Every songs explore a musical avenue.......2007-03-17
I like this cd a lot, there is no filler, just good songs.
There is many style on this album, as if Peter was looking for what his sound should become. Favorite tracks are "Solsbury Hill", "Hundrum" and the very emotional "Here comes the Flood" All the other songs are very interesting also, again, no filler in this one.
Peter breaks out of the machinery and reinvents himself.......2007-02-03
Moribund The Burgermeister starts the record off as similar to The Lamb style or "The Slipperman part 2" but then he tries all types of styles from rock to barbershop and succeeds at breaking out the the prog cliches he tried to get away from.
Farewell Genesis, Welcome Peter.......2006-10-29
Peter Gabriel had been part of Prog. Band Genesis since they were founded in the 60's til he decided to pursue a solo career in 1975. This was his first solo project called just "Peter Gabriel" like his upcoming 3 albums also would. But cause of the cover art made by the exellent Storm Thorgerson (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin) most fans knows it as "Car". There was no doubt that Gabriel wanted out of Genesis. As the brain and leadsinger he had alot of control over the band, but he felt like he could be creative enough while in the band, hence "Car" is a very diverse project with some songs that will remind you of Genesis, but also jazz, country sounding songs and some ballads. How can such diffrent songs make one 5 star album you may think?. The reason is simple. A fantastic artist exploring his musical skills are recording personal and innovative music he always wanted but couldn't. For the first time, Peter Gabriel is in full control of what he's doing and the result is fascintaing.
"Moribund the Burgermeister" on the surface sounds like a sequal of Genesis, it's a big majestic song about Middle Ages epidemics and backed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Listen closely to the sounds of this song and others, they are perfecly recorded. Second song and first single "Solsbury Hill" is perhaps the most autobiographical. Solsbury Hill is a very high place located in Bath, England where Gabriel often would go for walks, as the song starts "Climbing Up on Solsbury Hill/ I could See the City Light/ Wind was blowing, time stood still/ Eagle flew out of the night". You get the impression that Gabriel was very stressed at the time and wanted to spend time by himself thinking, so he went to this particular place where he could be alone and think about his life and take important decisions about the future. Maybe there was a voice inside of his head or god showing up, either way he took the decision. To leave Genesis and go solo. The whole song is pretty simple based on a accoustic riff throughput the song, which may sound odd coming from a Prog Rock legend, but "Solsbury Hill" is still one of his greatest compositions.
"Modern Love" was his secod single and didn't work on the charts at all, however it's an exellent song. Perhaps infleunced by Bruce Springsteen with it's basic riff driven rock song with alot of power and empathy. "Excuse Me" is perhaps the oddest songs of all here. It's sounds like a comedic parody suitable for a Frank Zappa album. It's very slow and somewhat jazzy, it was co-written by Martin Hall, one of a few songs that Gabriel didn't write himself. "Humdrum" is a ballad, very beautiful with great arrangements. It's about dissapearing. "Slowburn" is a typical Prog Rock feauting Robert Fripp on guitar, it has both slow and fast parts, it's a song that old Genesis fans will enjoy. Next song "Waiting For the Big One" is also Prog rock and it is very jazzy and not so accessable. It clocks over 7 minutes and got a wonderful guitar solo towards the end, believe it's Fripp again. "Down The Dolce Vita" also got help from the London Symphony Orchestra. If we go just by sound, this is the best song of the album. It's majestic and very colourful. It starts with the orhestra, almost like a film score and with fast guitar riffs but towards the mid it get's stripped down in slow pace and a strange percussion is used, almost like Fusion Jazz. This song is really worthwile. The closer is called "Here Comes the Food" and is a power ballad. It's based on a dream that Peter had where people could read each others mind, and those that were honest and sincere will get the apreciation they deserve while the false lyers will get exposed for who they truly are. Roger Fripp's guitar solo is magnificient here. Wish it had been longer. However, Fripp recorded his own version of the song with Gabriel once again on vocals for his album "Exposure".
Overall, Peter Gabriel's debut album is nothing short of excellent. It really captures who he is and how he want to sound like. It's quite diverse but still got alot of the Prog. Rock influences from Genesis. If you want to listen to something diffrent and well produced here is a album you should take a look at. No filler, or overproductions just a very good album with 9 songs that will get your attention. Start your Peter Gabriel collection right here.

The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

great choice.......2007-01-11
this was a gift for family. family member loves album quality and selections.
Brilliant offering.......2007-01-10
Amici Forever is suberb in every way. Their arrangements are exceptional and the original lyrics are perfect poetry.
Easy Listening.......2006-09-21
Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.
Very Relaxing Music.......2006-09-11
I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.
What more can you expect?.......2006-08-04
CD was delivered quickly, in excellent shape, and for a great price. What more can you say? George

So I'm just learning violin..........2006-09-21
and I can not play like Joshua Bell. For this, he better consider himself damn lucky as the world could not handle two of us Joshua Bells.
This was my first exposure to this phenom. Sorry, I had never heard of him until I got my first issue of STRINGS magazine and he was on the cover. My wife liked the cover and wanted to know if I got better would I not only sound like him but would I also look like him? I guess we'll never know how that will actually turn out. Safe to say, I'll end up not looking like him as I can never be quite as good as him. Again, damn lucky for Josh as I don't think the world could handle two of us.
This disc is an absolute gem not only for the Joshua Bell and violin fan, but the arrangements and the sound quality is superb. What this disc made me realize is that there are truly only a few out there that have complete and total control of their craft. It also made me decide that I would like to perhaps pick up a few more Joshua Bell recordings. For my wife, I guess I'll just duplicate them and give the copies to her in a blank cd case. I can tell her it's me playing. That ought to heat things up!
Joshua Bell..........2005-12-05
This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before.

McFerrin as a Conductor, not a Vocalist.......2007-02-12
I enjoyed but was disappointed by this CD- It highlights McFerrin's abilities as a conductor. I looked to this music to hear him as a vocalist. Do not let my disappointment detract from this excellent work.
Don't miss this gem!.......2006-12-14
I was first familiar with Bobby McFerrin as the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" guy, but he is also an extremely talented classical musician, both conducting the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and vocalizing some of the instrumental parts on this CD. Whether singing Faure, Vivaldi, Bach, or Tchaikovsky, McFerrin "becomes" a violin or cello, demonstrating his amazing vocal range and virtuosity. The pieces without his vocal addition are also a delight, due to McFerrin's skillful interpretation of these classics. I love this CD!
Basic yet entertaining.......2003-08-08
Nicely done. A great vocal performence by Bobby McFerrin (as usual,) but a choice of very basic "classics."
There's a lot of weight put on the music of Mozart, amongst which "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" is included. I think no one alive haven't heard it already, and I personaly think it's starting to taste like wood, no matter how good the orchestra is. The piece is 17.5 minutes long, and does not feature McFerrin's voice (nothing revolutionary.)
What made decide to purchase "Paper Music" was that I'd heard this version of Faure's "Pavane" - which here, with McFerrin's voice, is beautifully performed (almost reason alone to get the CD.)
After having heard this version of the piece and having read somewhere that a version of Stravinsky's Minuetto & Finale from "Pulcinella Suite" also is included I ordered the CD immediately...but McFerrin doesn't sing on the piece and it's not as satisfying, to me, as listening to the piece conducted by Stravinsky himself (or better yet - by Yoel Levi.)
There could be more pieces featuring vocals (only five tracks do,) because every time McFerrin sings here "something new is brought to old music" (in lack of a better way of putting it.)
Tchaikovsky's "Andante cantabile for cello and string orchestra," which closes the album, is another high-light that also features McFerrin's vocals.
Get this disc if you like well performed classical music.
I, myself, enjoy the modern classical music of Varèse and Stravinsky et al, where there are constant surprises (and "new" sounds by only an element such as unorthodox instrumentation.) I do not, however, regret having spent a few dollars on this CD - it is worth giving a leave of absence from the old dust collector every now and then.
Gorgeous recordings, favorite version of Boccherini's minuet.......2002-03-03
Amazing...the result of his voice added to some of these scores is so gorgeous. He doesn't overdo it, so that it adds to the music without taking away from it. This is a positive review from a very conservative classical enthusiast who usually doesn't tolerate adding anything to the original score. One of my favorite CD's. I think many children who like to hum to music would also like this CD as an intro to classical music. His conducting of Mozart though wasn't to my taste, try Sir Neville Marriner and the Orchestra of St. Martin in the Fields.
Bobby McFerrin can do it all.......2000-01-13
I listen to artist such as Bootsy Collins, Jimi Hendrix, and Funkadelic. I never listened to classical or even considered it. I just happened to pick up this cd and give it a try. I remember Bobby McFerrin from "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and decided to buy this cd. Man! This cd has added another demension to music for me. I don't know much about classical music but thanks to this cd I plan on learning and listening to much more. This cd kind of has a jazzy essence to it. Its like McFerrin added some of his own jazzy grooves to the classical writings. Bobby McFerrin is a very talented musican, vocalist, and conductor.

Customer Reviews:
The finest music for guitar and orchestra NEVER written.......2003-03-25
Here excellent Naxos guitarist Gerald Garcia (check out his "Latin American Guitar Festival" and "Brazilian Portrait" CDs) teams up with conductor/arranger Peter Breiner to produce a highly enjoyable collection of music for guitar and orchestra.
Here Breiner takes some of the best known piano works of Debussy and Satie, plus some items from Faure's orchestral output, and presents them in lush original arrangements for guitar and orchestra. The arrangements work best when they are simple. On a few they're a bit over the top, and for that the recording loses one star, but for the most part Breiner provides fine backings for Garcia's beautiful and sensitive playing.
Highlights include the two Satie "Gymnopedies", Debussy's "Le Fille Auz Cheveux de lin", "Arabesque", and "Reverie", and Faure's "Pavane" and "Sicilienne": all beautifully played and arranged.
An original idea, nicely executed with only one or two questionable moments. Should appeal to fans of classical guitar and French classical music.

Customer Reviews:
Simply Wonderful!.......2005-10-09
Are you ever searching for a great, relaxing, classical album that has more than just a single composer such as Chopin or Vivaldi? This is the album for you. Great classical composers all together on one album that can help soothe the day's stresses away. Great from start to finish and one of my favorites in my collection of classical music.
A Fine Way to Spend One's Evening.......2005-06-14
To start, I'll say my family (with the possible exception of my sister) is a fan of classical music. I was raised on Mozart adagios and Beethoven symphonies. When I came across this album in my parents collection not long ago, I began to listen quite avidly to it. The "Air on G String from Orchestral Suite 3, BWV 1068" is quite probably my favorite JS Bach pieces (probably due to its usage in "End of Evangelion") and the "Canon in D" has long inspired emotional scenes in my novels. While I'm sure many disagree, I find other recordings of the piece less emotional from my experience.
I rarely listen to the second half of the CD (my favorites are in the first quarter of the album), but all are relaxing and have excellent tone. The one piece I do not enjoy is the Vivaldi's Lute Concerto in D. For some reason, the sound of a classical guitar doesn't lull me into relaxation.
Overall, a very relaxing CD with great voice.
Nice CD for the office, or the ride home from work.......2005-03-25
A quite nice collection of classical favorites, including Bach's "Air on a G String" played by the ever-talented Academy of St.-Martin-in-The-Fields and Borodin's "Nocturne from String Quartet. Of course they didn't leave out everyone's favorites - Pachelbel's "Canon" and Rachamaninoff's "Rhapsody on a THeme of Paganini" which would alone make this CD worth buying. Nice easy listening for in the car or your office cube.

christmas adagios.......2007-01-14
this was one of the best assortment of classical holiday songs that i have ever heard. it contains a marvelous array of the best composers and performers that the world has to offer. if you are a fan of classical music, i think this cd will be a positive addition to your music collection
Nice Background for the Holidays.......2007-01-11
Beautiful Adagios and a rich selection for the price. Audio travels to Vienna, London, Cambridge etc
One of my very top 5 favorite holiday albums!.......2005-11-19
What a delightful surprise this 2 disc album was and I'm not a big fan of Christmas music. I loved all the selections and felt they were well performed. This is a true "must have" for any Christmas collection. Superior to many other compliations on the market. This one is a keeper! It is the one album I'll pick first to listen to after Thanksgiving.
Wonderful POCOCAT?.......2005-07-16
Great CD. The reviewer who calls him/herself POCOCAT says he/she is an opera singer. Wonder how much work an uninformed singer gets?
A "fast spinning" vibrato,as you describe Ms. Price, is not the same as a wide vibrato. The former is a speed issue, the latter a width issue. Therefore, 4 variables exist: fast, slow, wide, slim. Thus, 4 types of voice exist: fast/wide, fast/slim, slow/wide, and slow/slim. Most often a singer leans toward fast/slim or slow/wide, in varying degrees. A matter of taste, yes, but learn more about the voice before you expound.

I recommend it highly.......2005-10-05
I have yet to grow tired of this CD. I listen to it at work several times per week.
Pour yourself some tea, get the paper and put on this CD.......2002-02-14
This truly is a great album for a Sunday morning. I bought it after a recent morning I spent with my boyfriend; we made tea, ate breakfast, cuddled and napped, but I wanted some relaxing classical tunes to put on. I stumbled across this, and it certainly fits the bill.
I also liked that it had a good mix of familiar songs and ones I hadn't heard before. Selections include "Morning" and "Anitra's Dance" by Grieg, "Serenade for Strings in E Major" by Dvorak, "Sunday Morning" by Britten, "Pavane" by Faure, "Seventeen Come Sunday" by Vaughan Williams, "Air on a G String" by Bach, "Morgenblatter" by Strauss, "The Dargason" by Holst, "Prelude a l'Apres-Midi d'un Faune" by Debussy, and "En Bateau" and "Sicilienne" by Faure.
Don't expect any big fireworks -- there's certainly nothing rousing like "Ride of the Valkyries" or "1812 Overture" here. Pop this in for a lazy day.

Listen,Learn, & Grow: Playtime.......2007-05-14
The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!
Grandkids love it!.......2007-01-03
How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

There are some appealingly distinctive sonorities on this rewarding Opus 111 anthology, which gathers together Fauré's entire output for cello and piano. Peter Bruns plays on a really lovely, gut-strung Tononi cello once owned by the great Pablo Casals, while Roglit Ishay employs an Erard piano (a make particularly beloved of this composer). The interpretations stand out from the crowd as well. Both the sonatas date from late in Fauré's life and are lent searching advocacy by these intelligent performers. These are defiantly unsentimental readings, profoundly touching in their classical purity and strength, and exceptionally convincing in terms of both architecture and crystal-clear harmonic logic. Perhaps these artists' comparatively ascetic approach is less well suited to the winsome charm of the miniatures, though there's absolutely no missing the integrity and refreshing sense of new discovery on show. Good sound, the microphones capturing Bruns's occasionally audible breathing with merciless fidelity. No matter, a most distinguished recital. --Andrew Achenbach

Editorial review of...Faure?.......2005-05-26
I was disappointed that the editorial review for this album refers to an _entirely different CD_, how embarassing. Perhaps 5 stars can compensate for it a little?
