My Favorite Band, the Band of Renown.......2000-03-25
I am a die hard fan of Les Brown, so in my book there are no bad recordings by the Band of Renown. Only bad technical quality. However, I don't recall when Piccolino was ever a theme for the band. One of his best known recordings, Leap Frog is better known as the bands theme. The fact this CD is of lesser known recordings, not just the hits, Sentimental Journey, etc., makes this a recording worth buying.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific!.......1999-07-16
I love listening to a really excellent singer of love songs and ballads.
And, no singer, not even Crosby or Sinatra, surpassed Eddy Howard, as a ballad singer, when Eddy was at his best.
There are 22 tracks on this CD. Unfortunately, not all of them are vocals ... and not all the vocals are ballads.
But, track #19 alone, "Don't Take Your Love From Me" is worth the price of this CD!
Other tracks which feature Eddy's beautiful voice are "Our Love Is Here To Stay," "It Had To Be You," "Rose Room," "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me" and several more.
My only complaint is that Eddy's opening and closing numbers, "Careless" and "So Long For Now" are instrumentals, rather than vocals.
If you have never heard Eddy Howard, buy this CD, and be prepared for a treat, because Eddy had one of the best natural voices of the past century!

Bebop at its best.......2003-04-28
A dream come true for the true bebop enthusiast. Supersax was a hell of a band, and the idea of playing some of the best Bird's solos reharmonized for 5 saxophones is damn good. To say this correctly you can hear in the beginning of each track the full Bird solo, which usually was short (due to the recording limits of the era) and than you can hear 8 or 9 minutes of be bop blowing from the men in Supersax (Nimitz, Flory, Marsh, Hanna etc) and from Frank Rosolino the best trombone playing ever. Each tune is streached out at its limits for great listening fun. This is bop how it should be played, with no time restrictions, energy, abandon, and passion for the music. This one is the first part of a double live recording (you can find this same review in Supersax Japan part 2). The list is pure be bop with few standards which entered in the history of jazz like Bird's stuff (Just friends from the Bird with strings album for example). Really, Bird solos was so unforgettable that someone soon or later had to think to this idea of playing them as classic compositions, reharmonized for a small ensemble. Not to mention the solos from the men in Supersax and from Rosolino. They're really close to the ones from the masters tributed here (not only Bird, Diz and Monk too). Hope Capitol records soon will reissue the first three albums from Supersax that were unbelievable like this one.

Great Anthology From An Artist Who Should be Recording More.......2006-06-03
Carlene:
We miss you! And this great anthology of your work only makes us miss you more. When you sing "I Fell In Love," "Every Little Thing," and "Me and The Wildwood Rose," your fans miss you that much more. So much talent, great song choice, and a rocking, country playfulness that has huge crossover appeal are reasons for you to get back in the studio and put your personal problems behind you.
Carlene, Hindsight is 20/20. Look ahead to the rest of your life and great career, and make new music soon!
A Sweety Meant To Be.......2006-04-28
Carlene Carter, you guessed it, daughter of the late/great June Carter Cash. Is a Sweety meant to be. Carlene's down home Carter drawl, mixed with her rockabilly, is undinably THE SWEETEST THING. I FELL IN LOVE with her voice when I heard a friend sing CRY, ultimately my favorite C.C. song. ME AND THE WILDWOOD ROSE, written for her sister Rosey Carter, for their childhood growing up with the famous Carter family, they didn't have fabulous tour busses back then, so they traveled in their car, listening to their mother and their ancestors singing. Later Carlene would team up with English rocker Dave Edmunds, in BABY RIDE EASY. And NEVER TOGETHER BUT CLOSE SOMETIMES, written by musician Rodney Crowell. I LOVE YOU 'CAUSE I WANT TO written by Carlene and Radney Foster (one half of Foster and Lloyd) TRUST YOURSELF by another famous musician, Bob Dylan. CHANGE, but I wouldn't have CHANGEd a thing on this cd. One song for each year that Carlene has been in the busniess of selling records. She dedicates this album to the loves of her life, her children, Tiffany Anastasia Lowe, and John Jackson Routh. So blow outta here like a HURRICANE and buy this cd. Or if you have it already.. (in the words of Carlene herself).. Turn up that MUSIC!!
A Must For Fans.......2004-05-11
Grab this collection while you can, it looks like we may not be hearing anything new from Miss Carter for quite some time. Drugs took her longtime boyfriend Howie Epstein last year, after they'd reportedly been caught in a stolen vehicle. Then she lost her sister Rosie (drug paraphernalia found in the bus that Rosie was living in) and of course Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash all in the same year. News in early 2004 had Carlene back in jail for theft and drugs, and reports are that she looks like a mere shadow of her former self.
This may be the last chance to sample some great work from one of country's discarded gems.
Carlene Looking Back.......2003-09-18
20/20 Hindsight is just that: a retrospective of the music Carlene Carter recorded until 1996. This CD collection is worth every cent you pay for it and more many times over. At her worst Carlene is good . . . at her best she's earth shattering! She can rock with such electricity that your ears can't believe what they're hearing. And she can quiet down to the most sensitive heartbreak songs ever.
My favorites on the album are: "One Tender Night" - "Unbreakable Heart" - "Seetest Thing" -and "Easy From Now On". But every track has its own personality and magic.
Any regrets with this CD? Yes . . . I wish it had included "Something Already Gone" (from the 'Maverick' soundtrack). But we can't get everything we want on one CD -- but this collection contains most.
Carlene hasn't put any CD's out since this collection. I hope she returns to recording again soon. The world of music . . .and of "country music" needs her. But "Thanks Carlene" for all the tracks you have already given us . . .they are great . . .as are you.
Enigmatic genius delivers great rocking country.......2003-03-14
At her best, Carlene was a match for all her rivals. The evidence for this is the album I fell in love, a hard rocking country album from 1990, the like of which I don't ever expect to be matched. It is one of my all-time favorites in any genre of music. The follow-up to that album was released in 1993. Little love letters was another excellent album, but was predominately filled with ballads, demonstrating that Carlene didn't have to rock hard to deliver great music.
This compilation shows just how good those two albums are. I fell in love is represented here by the title track, Come on back, Me and the wildwood rose (one of my all-time favorite songs, it is about her childhood times with mother, June Carter Cash, and her Grandma, Mother Maybelle Carter) and The sweetest thing.
Little love letters is represented by Sweet meant to be, Every little thing, Unbreakable heart and I love you `cause I want to.
The next album, Little acts of treason from 1995, is represented by He will be mine, Hurricane and Change. In its way, that was an excellent album, but suffered by comparison with its two predecessors. As far as I know, Carlene has not recorded an album since then.
Of the older tracks, Baby ride easy, a duet with Welsh rocker Dave Edmunds from 1980, is another brilliant song. The other oldies are also enjoyable, if not quite up to the quality of the best tracks.
As a career-spanning compilation, this is excellent, but the original albums I fell in love and Little love letters are even better.

O'Connell compilation is EVERYTHING you could want & more..........2004-01-04
WOW!!! All I can say is WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! This is the best cd anyone has ever put out. These are rare radio transcriptions, and they are teh best recordings of her whole career. 1st of all O'Connell is featured here in jazz settings with several small intimate jazz combos, which allow Helen to relax, strethc out and sing some jazz!!! The AWESOME Page Cavanaugh Trio backs Helen up, for the best session of her career. Helen & Page should have recorded a whole lp, at least we have thsi gem of a CD. The only cd that pairs helen up with great jazz musicians including Shelley Manne!!! GREAT CD, The jazz side of HELEN!!! WOOHOO!!! THE BEST!!! WOW!!!
O'Connell compilation is disappointing.......2000-12-27
It's a shame there is so little of Helen O'Connell out there that one must settle for this CD to at least hear some of this singer's extraordinary talent. This CD, which runs less than 35 minutes, features O'Connell in three separate outings, 1953, 1961 and 1963. The best tracks are from her more recent recordings, where her unique vocal stylings shine. Her phrasing is sublime in Taking a Chance on Love and The Sweetest Sounds. But frustrating enough is that 7 of the 16 tracks clock in at less than 2 minutes as these recordings are taken of her radio performances. The sound quality is not first-rate either. The longest selection at 3:09 is O'Connell's hit, When The Sun Comes Out. Missing from this work is Star Eyes.
Helen O'Connell in various jazz settings...she's heavenly..........2000-04-17
A jazz vocal lovers dream come true... Helen O'Connell in a jazz setting. These sessions were taken from radio broadcasts from the 50's and 60's and the quality of the sound is great. Miss O'Connell is accompanied by various jazz quartets, trios, and quintents, including the Page Cavanaugh Trio. Here Helen improvises swings and sings sultry toch songs. This is a great example of a pop singer in a jazz setting, that really works, she actually becomes a jazz singer. HIGHGLY RECOMMEDED

Customer Reviews:
Are you kidding me?.......2002-08-08
I can't believe that on Amazon, where it seems like the average review for every item is 5 stars, that this cd is rated so low! I suppose if you don't like Johnny's vocals, you won't like this cd. But to call this recording "average" and give it 3 stars is ridiculous. This is Johnny Mercer singing in front of a great orchestra. The fidelity might not be the best, but who cares? There aren't that many Mercer recordings out there, so you gotta take what you can get.
In short, like any Johnny Mercer recording I've heard, the cd is WONDERFUL. As soon as I hear Johnny start in with "I met her by the river saint marie" I get chills. He was definitely one of the most talented musicians of the century, and this is a real cool date to check out.
And it's true, the version of Sweet Georgia Brown is fun, but it's not even the highlight of the disc because everything else is so good too.

I thought this album was pretty good...the Harlem Globe Trotters' Theme on this is excellent

Bea Wain's voice is heavenly..........2000-09-14
Why do we listen to Larry Clinton records today, well it's not for hot jazz solos, or unique arrangemnts, because Clinton's band certianly didn't have much jazz content, and Clinton was a one time Dorsey arranger, so we would listen to Tommy Dorsey if we wanted to hear Clinton's best arrangements(Clinton's best arrangements were for other bands, not his own). We listen to Clinton for basicly one reason, Bea Wain. Wain much like Sinatra had a New Jersey accent and sang in a way that had you longing for more. Wain really deserved much hotter then Clinton, it would have been nice if she'd been Bob Crosby's singer instead, however she was Clinton's vocalist, and we can be thankful for the beautiful ballads he arranged for her like "You Go To My Head," the difinitive Wain performance here. Wain sings hot on the Edythe Wright/Dorsey cover of "The Dipsey Doodle," Wain sings at the same level if not better then Wright(since Wain is a very jazz influenced vocalist, she admired Billie Holiday) however Dorsey's band(with Clinton's arrangement) playyed it a little hotter then Clinton's band. This CD even the intrumentals are overall enjoyable, and Clinton's band does swing, and Wain appears on 8 of the 16 tracks. Highlights include Wain on two hot numbers "Martha"(which I'm sure was Connee Boswell influenced), and "Whistle While You Work." Wain is in prime form thoughout and Larry Clinton's orchestra never sounded better, also the sound quality is excellent. Recommended to swing and jazz vocal collectors.
So That's What 1938 Sounded Like!.......1999-07-01
Devotees of classic swing can rapture to some very scratchy sounds. In fact, learning to listen past all of the surface noise and even fill in the auditory gaps is something of a prerequisite. Like watching a black-and-white film, you have to take what history has given you. (Let's not discuss such forms of vandalism as colorization and stereo enhancement.) For the best and most famous recorded performances, this becomes second nature; for lesser tunes, it can be a challenge. This CD offers something very rare indeed: A topflight band that had an opportunity to cut some excellent material with the best high fidelity recording technology available in 1937 and 1938. If you're a new swing devotee who never heard what was possible back then, you'll be impressed. If you're a dyed-in-the-vat old fossil who's heard only the commercial pressings of these tunes, you'll be astounded-and elated. First, a word or two about the Larry Clinton orchestra. For years, this band was given short shrift by swing critics. Albert McCarthy once commented that the only saving grace of Clinton's recordings was their level of execution. And George T. Simon once faulted the band for its "damp-sounding" saxophone section. Well, that was then, and this is now. The level of execution evident from this CD is phenomenal. And far from "damp-sounding" this band had a rich, strong sax section. For that matter, all of this band's ensemble work is tremendous: sharp, precise, rhythmic and deeply textured. If the solos aren't the thing of jazz legend, they are done with taste and style. It is very easy to understand why this band went on to be one of the major players of the swing era. Several cuts on this CD are worthy of special mention. "Glen Island Hop," despite the up-tempo suggestion of its title, is a haunting medium tempo riff that shows off just how much this band had on the ball. It's one of those rare tunes in which everything is done right: tempo, arrangement, solos, and even attitude. The intro starts out with a throaty and even sexy sax voicing, joined by a full bodied ensemble brass counterpoint, a low-key piano bridge, then the pensive sax riff with muted brass punctuations, then to a wonderful tenor solo backed up by some round-toned section trombone work, und so weiter. It's a wonderful tune to dance to, and with the excellent recording quality, it will transport you back to the Glen Island Casino in the distant summer of 1938. "Chris and His Gang" is another perfect dance-tempo tune with all of the famous Larry Clinton arrangement touches. There is no denying that this man knew how to construct harmonies for a swing band. "Sugarfoot Stomp," a necessary standby for any swing band in the'30s, begins with a Dixieland-inspired intro, and moves to a perfectly-paced clarinet solo; this is followed by a great call-and-response, a trumpet solo, a tenor sax ditto, and then more of that magnificently propulsive trombone section. A unison clarinet riff plays back and forth with the trombones, and than a swinging, pumping ride- out. On the dreamy side, there is a version of "You Go To My Head" that is nothing short of ethereal. A beautiful ballad to begin with, it benefits from the way that the band caresses every note of it. (The "damp-sounding" saxophone section does a particularly superb job.) Though Bea Wain's voice is not the best for this kind of tune, she treats the tune well, without the sort of melodrama that would have been easy. Her little hum at the end is a nice, sweet touch. The last tune on the CD, "I Want to Rock" (of all things) is a real swinger. An excellent arrangement, it's hard to believe that it dates form 1937 or '38; it has more of an early '40s sound to it. Definitely the product of an amazingly competent band. So scare up a Scott Philharmonic (and figure out a way to play this CD through it), give the little slides on your sock garters a tug, and get ready to turn a foxtrot or two. If you want to enjoy late '30s swing, this is the CD for you. You may not be able to go back. But yes, that's what 1938 really sounded like.

The Uncollected Eddy Howard & Orchestra.......2006-07-13
One of my favorite bands of the 40's and 50's. This is a wonderful collection.
Recorded with a Cactus Needle.......2001-12-27
I disagree with the previous reviewer. The sound quality is
terrible. Too bad because the band is great and the singer fine.
I was there at the Aragon listening to these songs in 1945,
so I can really appreciate the music - if only it sounded
reasonably well.

A forgotten vocal genius.......1999-07-08
If you enjoy listening to a really wonderful vocal artist, buy this CD.
No one could sing a ballad better than Eddy Howard.
This fact is demonstrated on this CD by the inclusion of such Eddy Howard classics as "To Each His Own," and "(It's No) Sin."
The sound quality is good, and my only complaint is that some of the great Eddy Howard classics are not included.
