Album Description
It's been over 40 years since harmonicist/pianist/vocalist Corky Siegel and guitarist/vocalist Jim Schwall met as college students and formed The Siegel-Schwall Band, one of Chicago's most beloved blues groups. From the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s, The Siegel-Schwall Band recorded ten critically acclaimed albums, toured relentlessly, and shared stages with artists such as The Allman Brothers, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane. Their subtle, acoustic-flavored blues, original songs and inventive interpretations of classics by Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon and other blues greats were their calling card, fusing urban blues and folk into their own unique sound. In addition to their recordings, the band was renowned for their high energy, good-time live shows. They played to adoring audiences all over the U.S., which prompted Billboard magazine in 1966 to call The Siegel-Schwall Band "the latest addition to the list of great South Side performers that has included Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Chuck Berry." In 1968, they defied boundaries by combining blues and classical music with their unprecedented performance of Three Pieces For Blues Band And Symphony Orchestra with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and established themselves as one of the most adventurous bands around. The Siegel-Schwall Band went on hiatus in 1974, and while band members pursued other interests and solo projects, they never stopped playing musicFlash Forward rekindles The Siegel-Schwall Band magic as Corky, Jim, Rollo and Sam share the spotlight on 13 new songs. From Sam's straight-ahead blues shuffle "Afraid of Love" to the politically charged humor of Jim's "Underqualified Blues" to Corky's playful blues tango Twisted, and the edgy lament of Rollo's "Krazy," Flash Forward is an infectious, joyful listen from beginning to end.
The Chicago Tribune proclaimed, "The news that The Siegel-Schwall Band is back together is something to celebrate." And so is Flash Forward, The Siegel-Schwall Band's new CD, and their first full album of new material in 30 years. Flash Forward picks up right where they left off.

WOW!!!!.......2005-11-02
flash forward/siegel-schwall band.......2005-09-24
laidback, smooth, and genuine blues songs .......2005-09-12
Formed in the mid-'60s by harpist Corky Siegel and guitarist Jim Schwall, their self-titled first album was released in 1966. They were known for amazing covers such as Jimmy Reed's `Going To New York' and Howlin' Wolf's `Shake For Me', among titles of their own, like Corky Siegel's `Angel Food Cake' and Jim Schwall's `You Don't Love Me Like That'.
Flash Forward is the Siegel-Schwall Band's first studio release in thirty years, marking it a milestone for fans, to say the least. The lineup is still Siegel and Schwall, along with longtime bassist, Rollo Radford, who joined the band in the early seventies. Add in former Howlin Wolf and Paul Butterfield drummer, Sam Lay, and you've got the `Flash Forward' version of the Siegel-Schwall Band.
Though it may not be for everyone, true blues fans, especially Siegel-Schwall fans of old, will love the laidback, smooth, and genuine blues songs on Flash Forward. It's a blues collage, proving to all that they're a very different and innovative band.
Siegel-Schwall returns, with a warm vibe .......2005-08-17
Despite the title, the band serves notice from the top that its Chicago blues sound and sense of humor both remain intact with the kickoff shout from Corky Siegel's harmonica and the line "If I don't tell you I love you, you should kick me in the shin."
Highlights include "Afraid of Love," the song quoted above, written by Siegel and sung by drummer Sam Lay; Siegel's "Twisted," a first cousin to his 1970 classic "I Don't Want You to Be My Girl"; and Lay's "Going Back to Alabama," which injects country blues changes on the guitar into a full band setting.
Guitarist Jim Schwall grabs his mandolin and hops in his Geo Metro for the Old-Timey romp "On the Road" and has some fun with a too-literal reading of the Bible in "Hey Leviticus." A not-so-subtle dig at George W. Bush, Schwall's down-and-dirty "The Underqualified Blues" recalls the band's "I Won't Hold My Breath" and "Out-a-Gas?" from the `70s and features perhaps the grungiest solo he's ever recorded.
The album's real gem, however, is bass player Rollo Radford's surprising jazz song, "Pauline," which features perhaps the sweetest, most melodic playing Schwall has ever recorded.
Fans of 1973's "953 West," in particular, should feel a warm vibe listening to "Flash Forward," but, really, any fan of Siegel-Schwall should rejoice at hearing this smart, fresh set of new songs.

TRACY YOUNG IS THE S**T.......2006-05-11
I plan to make up for that so-so review with this review, so here goes: It doesn't get any better than this! When you live in podunk USA (as I do), anytime you can get your hands on music like this it's, well, like a gift from the heavens! The majority of people in this town have NEVER heard music like this or, if they have, they will label it "disco". Too funny. I love music that is mixed to flow one into the other and although I just got the CD yesterday, I've already just about worn it out. Very few male DJs can keep my interest in their mixes, because I've got their CDs collecting dust in my CD rack. Tracy Young delivers the goods in spades. I love every selection on this CD; however, my personal favorites are "Rapido", "Shine", and "I Believe in We".
I don't care what anyone says: this CD kicks ass. I can't wait until her other CDs arrive in the mail! I HIGHLY recommend this one!

Great HIT in Brazil..........2005-07-30
Anyways, I don't have this record, but I had to tell that this must be good, cause I was 6-years-old and til this days (I'm 27) i can remember every single note from "yes" (track 2 in that album) and still I remember Tim Moore as one of the greatest voices I've ever heard in my life!!!
He eventually came to Brazil and presented himself in a bunch of tv shows... I can remember me, a little kid, staying up late to see him on tv in a sunday...

Impetuosities: Music of Joshua Rosenblum
Manufacturer: Albany Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B00008YJED Release Date: 2003-04-29 |
Customer Reviews:
Delightful, Mostly Light-Hearted, Occasionally Wacky, Music.......2003-06-23
The album is titled 'Impetuosities,' after the first piece recorded here, a jeu d'esprit written on commission for Philip Smith, the fabled principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic and played by him and pianist Joseph Turrin. 'Impetuosities' is an immediately attractive 7-minute romp that must be fun to play; it certainly is fun to listen to. Smith is quoted as saying, when he commissioned the piece, that he 'wasn't really an avant-garde guy,' to which Rosenblum replied, 'That's okay - neither am I.' Indeed, all the music here is resolutely tonal, immediately 'gettable.'
'Variations' for piano trio, here played by The Herrick Trio, consists of a flowing theme and seven variations that include a jig, a 'calypso-rag,' a waltz, and an 'Orientale,' among others. The Trio's violinist, Marilyn Gibson, also plays 'Marilyn's Solo', a brief unaccompanied bijou written for her. 'Four Songs of Thomas Hardy,' the most consciously 'arty' music here nonetheless contains a hilarious setting of 'In the Room of the Bride-Elect' that ends with the cry, 'Good God - I must marry him I suppose!' The four are sung by baritone Chris Thompson with impeccable diction and suave musicality.
'Flash Variations' for flute and piano flutters past in roulades and runs played with gusto and skill by Kathleen Nester, flute, with the composer at the piano.
'Tall Tales' for horn quartet is played by some Broadway pit-band buddies of the composer. They call themselves The Shubert Alley Horns and, if the booklet can be trusted, they sight-read the light-hearted pieces for this recording. One of the Horns, Dan Culpepper, also plays 'Three Episodes' for horn and piano, again with the composer at the piano.
Finally, a couple of wind-band pieces, a march (coyly called 'Forward March') and a sort-of-tarantella called 'The King's Pyjamas,' are played by a group of other Broadway musicians calling themselves - in homage to John Philip Sousa, after one of his marches - Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. A good time is had by all, including this reviewer.
Indeed, for a light-hearted 72 minutes this CD would more than adequately fill the bill. We're told Mr Rosenblum is preparing a Broadway musical based on, of all things, physicist/novelist Alan Lightman's fictional 'Einstein's Dreams.' Hoo boy!
