Any Parrothead worth his or her salt-rimmed margarita glass knows that the central experience of being a Jimmy Buffett fan is attending his concerts. As Buffett mentions in the liner notes to this live set, it's like the circus coming to town each summer, except that in the case of his shows, it's the audience, not the cast, that wears the costumes. Feeding Frenzy contains the essential elements of a classic Buffett concert: his two best early songs, "Come Monday" and "A Pirate Looks at Forty"; crowd pleasers such as "Margaritaville," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," "Fins," and "Why Don't We Get Drunk (and Screw)" (retitled "A Love Song [From a Different Point of View]" to placate his Puritan censors); and some island-leaning fare such as "Jolly Mon" and a version of Harry Belafonte's "Jamaica Farewell." A Buffett concert is like taking a Gulf Coast vacation without leaving your hometown. With "Feeding Frenzy," you can don your bird, lizard, or shark regalia and enjoy the comfort of your favorite easy chair. --Daniel Durchholz

2 out of 5 stars A snooze.......2006-08-03

Buffett has never been known for his great singing voice or guitar virtuosity, but that has never been the appeal of his music. These are party songs and he brings the perpetual atmosphere of island life to his concerts. For Parrotheads, this CD is a great way to live or, in many case, re-live that experience. For the casual fan of his music, who is looking for some great live music, this CD is a bore. Bland renditions of some of his hits, combined with inane banter in between songs simply makes for a dull listen. Parrotheads will likely enjoy this, while all others should probably steer clear.

5 out of 5 stars Feeding Frenzy.......2005-09-30

It's a great CD, it must be a universal opinion as someone stole my previous copy.

5 out of 5 stars Cincinnati Rules!.......2005-05-05

Having been at this concert here in Cincinnati on Aug. 8th 1990, this CD brings back great memories of Hawaiian flower shirts, Head fins, all that alcohol, plus all those outstanding tunes!
That night "Fins, One Particular Harbor and Volcano" were recorded and I can relive that night over and over forever. I bought this CD when it came out that first week in 1990 and loved every minute of it. If you're a Parrothead like I am then this CD is a "must have" for your collection. I don't go to the concerts anymore but I still love the music and listen whenever I can.

5 out of 5 stars Buffett's best Live CD.......2005-03-29

This has the Coral Reefers and Jimmy all dialed in. This is a must have for any Parrot Head and my personal favorite. This cd made me a Buffett fan from a Buffett agnostic.

5 out of 5 stars A must for your Collection.......2004-07-17

Recorded live in Cincinnati and Atlanta, this is one of his best live albums. I listen to it constantly and love to have it with me on fishing trips at sea.

4 out of 5 stars Crass music skills but its more than that........2007-04-16

Loved a previous reviewers issues with a punk band being on the dole (obviously he never grew up in the 70s and 80s then and must have a very small record collection if he condemns any 70s - 80s band that lived off the dole) Have to agree though the music is God awful. Not as bad as SSD though, (revived and repackaged as 'classic Boston hardcore' (read cant, sing cant play, need money)

Simple fact of the matter is, this band were/are one of the best representations of what punk was. DIY ethics, angry lyrics the song 'punk is dead' still rings true today. Just listen to those lyrics and switch on to any music station or pick up any book on punk/hardcore that is doing the rounds.

If you want decent music skills played along to political lyrics then you need to look to Dead kennedys, Subhumans or any number of others. Like it or not though Crass are a classic punk band.

(Loved the comment though about Crass being 'fascist' Hmmmmm an Anarchist - Fascist punk band, that makes sense!)

5 out of 5 stars punk.......2007-03-10

This cd is pure, raw punk at its finest. Don't expect glitz or glamour, just raw music and great lyrics and vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to it then make up your mind.......2007-01-15

Theres always crap that comes with buying/listening/talking about this record. People say its the best punk album ever produced (I agree its one of the best). Some say that it the worst piece of music ever, which I agree to some extent.

What I just said seems to be completely paradoxical, and you know...you right. Then again I'm right. This is one of the best punk albums ever, becauses unlike early punk bands they seperated themselves from the whole '77 crowd and struck out on there own and did everything, yes EVERYTHING on there own, which you really only see coming from garage bands when your in high school.
Which brings us to the music, which is where most people hate Crass. Yes, it is the most basic music you may ever hear in your life and the drums are pretty much one-sided with as cadence of marching in time. But when you get into Crass your really getting into a Idea-oriented band. The lyrics are really why you should by the album, its some of most intelligent lyrics I ever seen from any band.
Personally I always chuckle when I put this in my car, crank it up and listen to the guitars and drums. I'm going I can't believe I'm listening to this and they're playing like that. Always brightens up my day.
So remember with Crass: Lyrics < Music (in case I f'ed that up and you can't understand math, that Lyrics is more than Music)
This should be your first Crass album; this or Best Before

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary.......2007-01-10

Originally planned as an EP, Crass finally decided to include an entire album's worth of material on their debut. Nothing like it had ever been heard before, and it still has the ability to shock - and surprise with its considerable intelligence. With Feeding of the 5000, Crass threw down the gauntlet and it was hard for anyone to respond. This is powerful, profane, deeply felt, and urgent punk of a very special order.

The short songs sound almost martial in their rhythms, as if the band were about to go into battle. In a number of ways, that's exactly what's happening here. While other bands played around with rebellion, Crass took it very seriously, and one track after another drills in their highly political message. It might even take a little time for some listeners to grow accustomed to this striking approach to an otherwise familiar style of music. Songs like "Banned from the Roxy" tell it all - the real life story of a band who were themselves banned time and again, never forgetting the responsibility they have for telling it like it is.

A superior album.

4 out of 5 stars Won't be hearing this on the radio.......2006-03-22

Crass is a fantastic band with a strong message. One star off for being a bit "crap" when it comes to music, but thats not what crust punk is about. Its very creative and the distorted sampling on a few tracks to me as an industrial fan is really neat. They're crude and straight forward and thats what what I really like about them. Anyone who liked this should really check out Penis Envy.

5 out of 5 stars The tech-death legends finally got one of their LPs on Amazon!.......2007-03-22

Martyr have been and are still one of my favorite bands. Daniel Mongrain never ceases to amaze me with his tech-death quartet. The guitarwork is as technical as always, with some of the most mindblowing solos you'll ever hear. This isn't your average death metal band. There are weird time signatures, tons of tempo changes, and some of the weirdest vocals as far as death metal goes. The four part song is so amazing! This has it all: technical, progressive death metal that constantly grabs your attention. Fans of tech-death, prog metal, death metal in general, or just metal in general need to check this out, along with their previous 2 albums, Warp Zone and the masterpiece Hopeless Hopes.

5 out of 5 stars Return Of The Legends.......2007-03-22

Canada's overlooked tech-death team is back with their first album in six years, and this really shows the band coming back stronger than before. Their previous works, 1997's "Hopeless Hopes" and 2000's "Warp Zone", were already well played, well crafted, and executed with excellence. The same can be said for "Feeding The Abscess". The band doesn't let up their technicality one bit here. We still have the complex structures and mindblowing solos they were well known for before, and the production is excellent! What else can I say? If you enjoy technical music that makes you really think, don't hesitate on getting "Feeding The Abscess".

Album Description

Feeding The Wheel is a milestone in the man's personal expression, comprising eleven instrumental tracks (with a bit of dramatic spoken word) that demonstrate the skills of a man that is both technologically and technically at the top of his game. "This album is important to me because I haven't done something like this since my album Listen. What it is is kind of a full statement of my musicality. You know I'm involved in a lot of different styles. Dream Theater is known for their progressive rock/metal combination and I can certainly relate and I have a lot to say in that area. But in addition, I also have a lot of other styles that I've been playing over the years. What I've always done has been a hybrid. Even when I was 12, 13 years old I was mixing styles together. My first piano lesson was with a guy who basically taught me all the chords and how to improvise. And from there I went into very serious classical piano training. So right from the get-go, I was! involved in exploring, just playing what came out of my mind. But if someone asked me what kind of album this is, I would say a rock album, even though some of it is jazzy, some classical, some perhaps leaning toward Dream Theater. So it's a blend."

4 out of 5 stars Feeding the Wheel.......2007-01-04

typical stuff out of U of M Jazz school. Steve Vai, Dave LaRue and others make this an outrageous cd. equal to any Pat Metheny or Allan Holdsworth stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Killer keyboardist accompanied by great musicians equals a blast! .......2006-09-13

This release from Jordan is a diverse selection of instrumentals that fuse rock, jazz, funk and classical styles. "Feeding The Wheel" has plenty of strength with prog-rock tunes like "Quantum Soup" and "Feed The Wheel", but also includes slower melodic songs like "Shifting Sands" or "Headspace", and amazing solo keyboards on "Interstices". The talented guest musicians include Terry Bozzio on drums, Steve Morse and John Petrucci on guitar, and Billy Sheehan plays bass on "Crack The Meter". The bass on the remainder of the disc is played via the keyboards and you hardly notice the absence of a dedicated bass player. Recommend for prog fans or those who enjoy thick keyboard orientated material.

5 out of 5 stars Joe.......2005-05-13

i have never taken the time to rate an album before, but i have to do it to this CD. WOW!!! I'm a sort of DT, Satriani, and Vai freak (and Pat Methany) but never has any album i have ever owned reached this level.

Yeah, this guy can play, and play fast. However unlike DT train of thought(which sounds kind of like math), this CD is just so much more complete!

Reminds me of DT scenes from a memory as it is very operatic and well structured. Also reminds me of some of Satriani's ballads in that there is a sense of direction. But saying this CD is a mix of DT and Satriani is not correct. In short this is a CD no Musician of any kind should be without, as well as normal human beings. You Must Buy This.

word of warning- only two of these songs remain in 4/4 for the whole duration, the rest are in ????????

5 out of 5 stars I'm speechless!.......2005-03-03

Having enjoyed Jordan's work with DT and LTE, I decided to give this album a chance. I couldn't be more impressed. These are excellent songs. I'm not a keyboard expert, so I can't give a description of all the technique, but needless to say, Jordan can rip. The songs are so interesting and complex. The other players compliment the songs nicely. People that love very creative music, that rocks and also soothes, this album is highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING - AMAZING - AMAZING ..........2004-04-02

THIS REVIEW is of great importance because it is my first and only review. I do not bother writing reviews (not much time to do so) but in this case I will do it to pay tribute to this extraordinary guy! I feel that this is the least I can do to thank Jordan Rudess for the present to my ears :)

I had the big chance to see this guy live in Glasgow ('98 or '99) opening a Dream Theater show. He was playing alone with his drummer (MRG) and you had the feeling that there was a whole group out there. He was AMAZING!

I was probaly the first Greek who got this album (haha) since I found it when I was in Finland for vacations. Since then it has been number 1 in my playlist (more than 2 years !!!)

This guy blends so many styles so well that you feel jealous of him (if you are a musician ;-) His technique is top class but the most interesting in my opinion is the "thickness" of his music. Every time you listen to a song you will discover new things.

My favourite songs are:

2) Quantum Soup -- amazing end
5) Ucan Icon
7) Crack the meter -- very energetic
9) Revolving Door
10) Interstices -- very smooth blending of almost every piano style
11) Feed the wheel

This is the BEST keyboard album ever in my opinion!

Rating: 6/5 (this is not a mistake ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Tim Finn is a god.......2003-01-10

Even after all this time i am still playing & enjoying this CD,why may you ask?

The songs are simply first rate with strong melodies that only Tim Finn can write.I urge anyone who is a fan of Split Enz/Crowded House or who loves great music to buy this CD you will not regret it.

4 out of 5 stars The Comeback Kid.......2002-12-19

On his latest release, Tim Finn sings "I'll never know what came over me." He's probably referring to his last album, Say It Is So, which was a muddled mess and not the kind of heartfelt melodic pop/rock we've come to expect from Tim.

Fortunately, he has returned to a more familiar form with Feeding The Gods... Superior songwriting, hummable melodies, clear vocals. It's harder-rocking than his classics Before and After, Big Canoe, and Escapade, but Tim doesn't over-reach, which is where I think he went wrong with his previous album.

5 out of 5 stars Rocktastic new album!.......2002-12-18

Well, some people seemed a bit suspicious about his last solo effort 'Say It Is So'(2000)....but if people arn't convinced with this album they never will be.
Tim Finn has come out with an album with more energy and passion than anything in his back catalogue. I still put it on and am amazed at what Im listening to.
Having been in the shadow of brother neils work of late, this should put his name right out there. Even the most ardent Neil fan would fins it hard not to like it better than Neils last release One nil.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Finn's best album ever!.......2002-09-07

Before I go any further: this is an EXCELLENT album, buy it, play it LOUD over and over and over again. This is Tim Finn's best album ever. To say this of an artist with a distinguished 30 year career is saying a lot. Tim penned the lion-share of Split Enz's hits, co-wrote Crowded House's `Woodface' album (Weather with You, etc.) and has 6 solo albums to his name with hits like (Fraction too Much Friction, Persuasion, etc.). Yet `Feeding the Gods' is his crowning moment. Even taken at face value, without the Finn name, the album sounds fresh, energetic, direct and deceptively simple and there isn't a single weak moment. Other artists would [do anything] for something like this. At the end of the 40 minutes you'll find yourself slightly dazed, somewhat confused, certainly out of breath and happily reaching for the replay button.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL ALBUM.......2002-08-07

This is the most enjoyable new album I've purchased in some time. From the very first listen the whole album was such an easy and rewarding listen. I was somewhat disappointed with the his last album "Say it is So" but this album is a perfect combination of guitar driven music and Tim Finn's excellent melody driven songwriting. The song's that stand out are Songline, Say It Is So, Dead Man and Incognito in California. I have all of Tim's solo albums and this is unquestionably the best.

4 out of 5 stars Something new, interesting & definetly different.......2006-05-02

This record took me forever to get. Actually I'm still not sure if I "get" it, but when a record has rave reviews all over the net and I think it's bad I doubt myself just a little bit until I have listened to it to death. That being said I have been rocking this record in my MP3 player for a solid month and I am starting to see what those cats are talking about. But only sort of. Emcee Baje One and producer Snafu have a special chemistry here that really does seem kind of scientific, or maybe that's cause of the topics to rap about: Time travel, plutonium, liquefying ice, etc. Needless to say this album is a little different, but they do it well and with precision. Baje One is a solid emcee with a dope flow and a confidant swagger that is present in many NY representers. Snafu makes beats that bounce and weave around the lyrics usually with only one thing being steady: the dusty drums. At times comical they have created an album that is truly nerd rap, not because they are using big words but they literally are talking about things that my chemistry genius girlfriend would love. Not to say they don't get their straight up hip hop on either though. On "House Wigger" (14) they address those who may be posing as something they are not (and hip hop seems to be full of em). If you are looking for something a little different and fun this album is for you, just be prepared for something you have never heard and may never hear again. Junk Science = dopeness on record, it just takes forever to really sink in.

5 out of 5 stars Off the hook!.......2005-12-04

these kids definitely have something going here. fresh beats, simple, but intelligent lyrics, and style out the wazoo! I didn't know what to expect when I picked this one up on a friend's recommendation, actually I kind of hate the kid that told me to buy it, but now I'm glad I know that kid, cause he put me on to the coolest indie rap record of the year.

5 out of 5 stars This is album is not Junk.......2005-11-21

Junk Science's album lived up to all my expectations. The production is real percussive, and gritty, like 90's hip hop, not like all that synthy radio rap that seems like it's everywhere (and getting boring). Junk science's lyrics are straight forward, and sometimes really funny, but this isn't a comedy record, my favorites songs so far are "House Wigger" and "That's the Way", both songs that detail this dou's hard work to get as far as they have and some of the obstacles they had to get past.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely company when you're alone & great with guests!.......2003-02-05

I have had the most interesting experiences with Sahan Arzruni's "Childhood Memories!" One evening I put it on while cooking in the kitchen. As it played, I heard a refrain from the living room that was so enchanting, I had to abandon my cooking and just be with the music. Then I'd go back to cooking and another piece would call to me! All the pieces seemed to tell their own special story: a cat and mouse theme with a wonderful chase; a more ponderous piece with accents of splashing light; a "bluesy" feel with a saucy tale; and sometimes the pieces felt improvised, so in the moment was Arzruni.
Another evening I had it on with guests gathered, and Arzruni's music became the perfect background for the conversation, adding some remarkable accents and details, delighting all! Lovely company when you're alone, and great with guests!!
"Childhood Memories" is a good title as it has a way of innocently creeping in and taking hold. Calling to times past, and eager, energized, open. He subtitles it "Music for Younger Pianists," of which I'm neither, so I encourage all others not to hesitate!

5 out of 5 stars A JOYOUS EXPERIENCE.......2003-01-08

I AM TOTALLY ENCHANTED BY THIS RECENT CD "CHILDHOOD MEMORIES" OF SAHAN ARZRUNI. EACH SHORT PIECE AND THOUGHT CREATES AN EXTRAORDINARY WHOLE. I AM BEGUILED BY THE RENDITIONS OF AMY BEACH, A DELIGHTFUL BEGINNING WITH HER VIVID "CARNIVAL". THEN CAUGHT BY THE MYSTERY OF ROBERT STARER'S "PURPLE" FROM THE SET I PARTICULARLY ADMIRE. THE FUN OF "BRIGHT ORANGE", THE GENTLENESS OF "GREY", THE PRETTINESS OF "PINK",THE EXCITEMENT OF "CRIMSON", THE SURPRISE OF "MAROON",THE EDGE IN "ALUMINUM",THE GLINTS OF SHINE IN "SILVER AND GOLD", THE ZIP OF "KHAKI", THE DASHING VIVIDNESS OF"CHROME YELLOW". THEN COMES THE INTELLECTUAL FRENCHNESS OF NED ROREM.(ESPECIALLY LIKED "A NEW GAME" AND "A TRICK") I FIND DIANNE RAHBEE A SHEER DELIGHT, AND ALSO WILLIAM MAYER ... ESPECIALLY THE DELICIOUSNESS OF "BIRDCAGE" AND ALL HIS MANUSCRIPTS LEADING TO "SUBWAY INTO THE SUNSHINE". MIRIAM GIDEON, SO BRIGHT AND CLEVER, YET SO MUSICALLY EXPRESSIVE IN THE HANDS OF SAHAN ARZRUNI. "HESITATING SECONDS", "SLIDING THROUGH THIRDS" WITH ARZRUNI'S DELICATENESS OF TOUCH ARE MAGICAL. LOUISE TALMA'S UNIQUELY BEAUTIFUL "DUCK DUET", THE HIGH SPIRITS OF "FOLLOW THE LEADER" AND "SKIPPING"-- ALMOST BACH-LIKE IN DESIGN, "THE ROBIN" (WITH MORE ENERGY THAN MY VERY FAT LOCAL ROBIN) AND ALL THE ENTICING SNATCHES OF THOUGHT SHE HAS CREATED THROUGH SAHAN ARZRUNI. "PITTER PATTER", "A HEAVY LOAD","WHIRLING PINWHEELS"-(SO DELECTABLY LIQUID),"THE CLOCK" COME QUICKLY TO MIND. THEY ARE ALL SPECIAL IN THEIR OWN INDIVIDUALITY. "CIRCLES", "TWO BY TWO","SOUNDSHOTS" ARE A PERFECT MATING OF COMPOSER AND PERFORMER. THERE ARE NO TECHNICAL LIMITS. IT IS A JOYOUS EXPERIENCE TO HEAR SO MUCH DELIGHTFUL, PLEASURE-GIVING "NEW" MUSIC, PLAYED EXQUISITELY AND MOVINGLY BY SUCH A PROFICIENT ARTIST AS SAHAN ARZRUNI. HE HAS INDEED, CAPTIVATINGLY, "DISTILLED" THE ESSENCE OF CHILDHOOD.

Album Description

It all began on 90-Mile Beach where Jonathan and Heather developed a common vision, to form the greatest bubblegum pop'n'roll band ever and follow the summer till the end of time. The Brunettes consist of members Jonathan Bree (song writer, guitar, vocals), Heather Mansfield (vocals, keyboards, glockenspiel, clarinet, harmonica, whistle), Kari Hammond (drums, percussion), Mike Hall (Bass guitar and Double Bass, backing vocals), and this album 'Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks' is a sugary sweet pop masterpiece, just rough enough in the right places to seduce the indie-pop listener. 5 out of 5 stars A Great Find.......2006-06-09

I saw The Brunettes open for The Shins last year. It turns out the Shins were rather disappointing live, but it was entirely worth going to have been introduced to this group. I fell in love with their music, and bought both of their albums and both of their EPs that night. Of their four releases, this is definitely the strongest. Musically, it's fascinating, doing bubblegum pop in bizarre and captivating new ways. And the lyrics are charming - they sing about love with a refreshingly naive honesty - they're saying the things that we all would like to say, if we weren't so self-conscious.

I first saw this band live opening for Rilo Kiley recently and they matched well together. The best way to describe their music is that they have kind of a mid-sixties surf pop sound about them with nice harmonies and a good sense of humour. This particular album highlights that perfectly. The group tosses out a wide variety of sound meshing with simple peppy lyrics with the energy of the Ramones. You put this on at a party and people will be dancing all over your living room and kitchen and kind of humming along thinking it feels familiar.
To give you an idea of their own tastes one of the guitar player's (Jonathan) favorite songs is "Crimson and Clover". You immediately get what their influences are. You think of "Pet Sounds", maybe Phil Spector (pre Wall of Sound) and a bit of David Bowie.
Yet they make it all their own.
Definitely something to listen to on a bright sunny day.

A great album full of creativity, and orginality. The beautiful sounds of the album will amaze you. Highlights of the album include: Talk to Jesus, Summer Love, Holding Hands and Feeding Ducks, Dancefloor, and End of the Runway I got a chance to see them perform live, as openers for Rilo Kiley. They are even better live. This is a great album you should not pass up.
