magnificent looper.......2007-01-04

I have been buying music for 40 years...this quite simply is one of the best records I have ever heard and makes my desert island list shoving other classics down the ladder. The music is tight....the lyrics are thoughtful and provoking beyond measure...the mix is outstanding...transistions and breaks give me goose bumps...all the talk about Aaron Sprinkle...ok, I get it now. So overwhelmed was I by this disc that I began moving backwards...searching for other Sprinkle work that I missed because of the speed of life....he is gifted..he is blessed....and for a few dollars we have the priviledge of owning aural art. I dont do reviews....but felt compelled...there are few CD's I own which are so good that I simply have to listen to them over and over...reluctant to remove them from the player, expectant that I will hear something I missed the last time....I call these discs "loopers"....let em loop. "Fair" is outstanding. If it hits you like it hit me...move backwards and get "Lackluster" by Aaron Sprinkle. Seek truth.

Fair's Debut Album or Aaron Sprinkle's Next Solo Record?.......2006-11-28

I've found it very easy to compare Fair's "The Best Worst-Case Scenario" to the album "Ephemere" by Sprinkle's previous band "Rose Blossom Punch". Both of them have significant strengths which make them standout from a lot of Christian/post-Christian music releases. Namely Aaron Sprinkle's outstanding voice and songwriting.

When it was released in 1997's Ephemere sounded a bit too rough around the edges, and thankfully Sprinkle and band have improved their sounds on Best Worst-Case Scenario, the production on a whole sound better on this album.

With all the improvements I think it would be even-handed to note that more than anything this band needs a 3rd party producer to come in. I have loved all of Aaron Sprinkle's solo material which is one of the reasons why the songs on this album are so good. Make no mistake - this is quality songwriting - hence 4 stars! But one cannot help but feel that there are times when Best Worst-Case Scenario feels like little more than an amped up solo record.

Most solo projects from artists accustomed to being in bands seem to posses the unrushed feel that comes from someone making music at their own pace and on their own terms. It doesn't have the ebb, flow and fight that you come to expect from a working band recording their first record. In this regard Best Worst-Case Scenario seems to feel too laid back. There's very little grit or urgency in the songs, which makes it easy to wonder if these songs weren't all written and tracked by Sprinkle who then brought in a few buddies to fill in one or two of the gaps. There are no "Grit" or "Urgency" pro-tool plugins (although I'm sure someone's working on it as we speak). To capture that sort of energy you have to do it the old fashioned way - playing and writing together as a band. Is that what happened in this case? Who knows?

Hopefully working with a producer might help Fair's next album move sonically beyond something that could easily be mistaken for another solo project by Sprinkle. Obviously you cannot judge the quality of an album by asking whether or not the band formed in studio or out. But in this case it's a fair question.

Smoooooth.......2006-11-25

This is the most recent project from musician/producer Aaron Sprinkle, who along with starting a career as a solo artist has gone into the studio with Pedro the Lion, Emery and Damien Jurado (another emo fan favorite). What resulted is a twelve track collection of very well produced, mellow pop songs for the fans of indie pop rock, rather the indie screamo-rock.

Vocalist Sprinkle has a vocal quality similar to Matthew Sweet with the slightly nasal quality and sentimental lyrics. The album is strong in the areas of song writing (perfectly structured songs) and production. you can easily hum to his pop songs, especially on tunes like "Unglued" and "Bide My Crime". Like Keane and Coldplay, Fair rides a fine line between adult contemporary pop and alternative/indie rock. However, they do it very, very well. This is a great record and it is oh so smooooth.

This album is simply amazing. The sound is outstanding and solid. The vocals rock and every song is great. It is a really great find. It is my favorite album right now. I listen to it over and over.

I very recently purchased this CD..listened to only the first 5 songs and it's so good it gave me chills. Amazing. I can't wait to hear the rest. Tooth and Nail is the best label for bands/songwriters.

Art-rock for the Euro-pop crowd........2006-07-28

dEUS aren't exactly art rock, but they're not really rock, either: spacey and weird enough to get ignored by the casual listener, yet too "hooky" and commercial to really be appreciated by the thick glasses-snob set. dEUS fill a pretty perfect niche for those of us who like our weird music to still be fun and hummable. The opener rings out like an early 90's anthem, yet tunes like "Hotellounge" seem like they could be written by Bernie Taupin and Elton John. If you haven't heard this album, you're really missing out. I couldn't get into the 2nd release quite as much, but this album demands to be heard.

A small but vibrant Antwerp (Belgium, Europe) music scene meant that most alternative bands were incestuous, liquid beings; with each musician being as likely to be in five bands as one, but a mutual love of all things alternative and underground, melded five talented musicians and performers into dEUS. The above is some background, taken from the dEUS-website. I still remember my schoolfriends being exited about "that band with the violin" that they had seen live (I was living in Germany at the time, so I hadn't seen them). When this album came out, some of my friends practically forced me to listen to it... And I was blown away. Back when Mtv was still a station where you could discover new things, they used to play the Suds & Soda video a lot (with the "Friday friday friday" chanting). A belgian rock journalist recently commented that this song has become our national anthem, and in a way, it has. So you should definitely buy this album...

I know they are relatively unknown in the States (even though they are touring there as I'm writing this), but in Europe (and Israel), most of their recent concerts (over 100) were sold out very quickly. They have recently released their 4th album, Pocket Revolution (if you don't count the ep).

I also want to correct one of the other reviewers: It was their bass player, not their singer, who went on to form the band that was first called Moondog Jr. and is now called Zita Swoon. Check them out as well!

A Road Trip through rock/garage/punk/blues/jazz/funk lane.......2004-05-26

If you are the kind of person who loves music that has no boundaries , no frontiers , and seamlessly traverses genre of music , and effortlessly captures the essence of them by transfusing them as sound and roll them into music , then DO NOT read further ..just grab a copy of this album. These guys will blow your mind with their talent and compositions, and a fabulous arrangement. Some rare instruments are used on this album , and voices are also used as instruments. Preferably listen to it using a headphone and a good one at that. If you are janxed then there is nothing like it. Take this trip today :).

Worst Case Scenario.......2004-03-14

The title sounds depressing but this is not one of those dingy albums you buy as a teenager which you ending up hating for being gloomy when you grow up. I've been listening to this album on and off over the years and it still remains new to my ears - it hasn't dated.

I really think that if you like playing along on your guitar to great guitar songs or like your music a bit more intelligent than your usual rocky crap then these crazy belgians really are worth listening to. There's a good blend of songs on this album - not obviously shifting from song style to the next to merely show their ability to do different types of song - but the whole thing really does fit together.

Altogether a good little album - a gem from this period of musical history as it survives without embarassment or for being bland, boring or dull. dEUS really deserve to be heard if you are a true music fan, believe me. Also the singer went on to form another band called Zita Swoon who are really excellent too - Zita Swoon is the morphed / evolved version of what this band would be doing today. Please give them a try as well.

One of the '90s most overlooked bands.......2002-10-17

Simply put, dEUS was one of the most talented, challenging, and uncompromising bands of the second half of the 1990s. When the radio was filled with people still riffing off of Nirvana and embarrassing themselves as post-punk sound-a-likes, dEUS was doing their own unique thing with few people taking notice. The band has three full-length releases, all of which are beautiful, dense, and challenging. Their first album, W.C.S. is the perfect introduction to what is soon to be your new favorite band.

The greatest punk band ever!!!.......1999-03-01

This is the direction punk rock should have taken. Unfortunately, the recent rest of the world saw punk as nothing more than the pathetic likes of Green Day or one of those other uncreative radio bands. Worst Case Scenario is loud, intense and more energetic than any recent band save Nation Of Ulysses. The drumming is competent and driving, the guitar work shows some highly creative chord progressions and tuning (or lack thereof -- remember when Sonic Youth used to have an attitiude???), and the bass work would scare Charles Bukowski sober. The vocals, when intelligble, reveal some interesting messages about human nature; when inarticulate, they simply show the passion and conviction that make some bands great. This band would make the poppy little boys of Green Day either cry or grow hair on their chests and give up that pathetic rubbish they call punk. Had punk rock taken this direction earlier then there may still exist a creative and enthusiastic following.

Long live the olde Commander !.......2004-12-24

This is a great album of stuff thrown togeather by the olde Commander. Is it just me or is he getting better with age. Unfortunately tracks 13 and 14 were missing and/or won't play. Of course this did'nt stop me from buying 3 more copies hoping it was just one of those things but alas it seems that these tracks are missing from'em all. Bummer but the album is still totally worth it. Here's to wishing that all the olde Commanders stuff will be available someday - but wish in one hand and crap in another and guess which will be filled first! Still . . .
