For parents, listening to Dan Zanes provides not only instant Raffi relief, but also the warm sense of belonging to the right crowd. On each disc he trots out a posse of cool friends like Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, and Lou Reed and he delivers his openhearted lyrics with the rare roots-rocker's gift for stirring grace into grit. It would seem that the release of his fourth record, House Party would be ripe for a backlash--how long can the hokey conceit of a bunch of aging groovsters banging out kids' tunes in a Brooklyn basement hang onto its charm? Looks like we'll have to wait and see, because House Party rages on with the same winning, welcome-to-our-homespun-revolution vibe as its predecessors. Deborah Harry takes a twirl on "Waltzing Matilda," Bob Weir fires up the "Wabash Cannonball," and Angelique Kidjo bids "Jamaica Farewell," but the Zanes originals are this record's proving grounds, and they pin the tail on the donkey with bulls-eye precision. Contributions from returning regulars Barbara Brousal and Rankin' Don--the best couple of favors a party could hope for--send Zanes' campaign to become the guy who turned lampshade-wearing into a kindergarten fashion craze soaring. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Dan's first album...Wiggle the Wiggles out of your CD Player.......2007-06-12

You may have seen Dan on various spots on Sesame Street, I first saw him in his yellow suit, singing Jump Up. This album continues the wonderful music that my daughter has turned my wife and my self on to. The beats are there, and the lyrics are very catchy.

So do yourself a favor, swap out Wiggles or Barney for Dan and his Friends, and enjoy kids music once again.

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for Dan Zanes!!!!!!.......2007-05-21

Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!

When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.

After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars My daughters favorite!.......2007-05-14

I bought this CD since Dan Zane is on the Disney Channel. My daughter absolutely loves it! She asks to hear "House Party" all day every day. We dance and sing and it has brought a lot of fun into our house.

5 out of 5 stars Dan is her new best friend.......2007-05-13

We always look for music that is entertaining and enriching for both the toddler and the parent. We had heard Dan sing before on "For the Kids" CD and thought we'd give it a try. We all get down to Dan Zanes House Party! This CD never leaves the car player. The cover is a delightfully drawn board book of Dan & his entorage Whoopin' it up all over town. My 2 year old will "read" the book to me, explaining the pictures and making connections to the music. It's great.

4 out of 5 stars Kids love it.......2007-03-09

My son, aged 6 and my daughter, almost 2 - love to dance to "House Party Time" in the morning. It really gets them going. They are big Dan Zanes fans.

It's said politics makes strange bedfellows. But it's got nothing on the peculiar marriage of art and history inspired by the tragic events of 9/11/01. Before that day, Daniel Rodriguez was a member of New York's finest, working as an NYPD security officer at the Manhattan South precinct. If it seemed an odd calling for a gifted, operatically trained tenor, it was employment many a journeyman artist could relate to: the proverbial "day job." As it turns out, no police academy in the world could have trained Rodriguez for the crucial role his city's darkest hour thrust upon him. While his colleagues mourned their staggering losses and toiled around the clock in rescue efforts, Rodriguez delivered renditions of "God Bless America" that rallied both his city and his country, much as Kate Smith's version of the Irving Berlin patriotic standard had done at the dawn of WWII.

Contemporary jazz great-producer Tom Scott took it from there, showcasing Rodriguez's powerful voice in this deftly arranged album focused sharply on personal and national inspiration. Taking his cue from his own hero, Mario Lanza, Rodriguez instills no small amount of drama in his performances, and it serves him well on tracks like the American folk classic "Shenandoah," a rousing take on Scarlet Pimpernel's "Into the Fire," and the relative Sinatra rarity "The House I Live In." The "God Bless America" here varies from the original single release, with Rodriguez reading the spoken intro once delivered by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Is Rodriguez the greatest tenor of modern times? No. But it's hard to imagine a talent better suited to the challenge history has thrust upon him; we're lucky--make that blessed--to have him. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Daniel Rodriquez.......2007-07-16

This alblum is a treasure to own and listen to. He really captures the spirit of patriotism. I have played his songs at a local fireworks show that I DJ at and his songs are up there with the other songs by artists by Mr. Lee "God Bless The U.S.A." Greenwood and other great artists. New York City and the nation needed him at a time when we were trying to recover from the worst tragedy in the history of the U.S.A. and he was there for us.

5 out of 5 stars Music From and For the Heart.......2006-11-25

Daniel's album is music to be shared with family and with friends to help further ensure warmth, strong family ties, and love of our beautiful country. His voice is magical, skilled, rich and so memorable that it can take one on a journey from yesterday to promise for a bright tomorrow. This is a superb rendering of past unforgettable music. His solemn rendition of the peace song "God Bless America" is the album's centerpiece and truly unforgettable....

5 out of 5 stars Daniel Rodriguez.......2006-11-11

I first heard of Daniel Rodriguez a couple of months ago when he sang on Jay Leno's show. He was/is WONDERFUL! His voice is beautiful, but he sings from the heart, and that makes him exceptional.

4 out of 5 stars Some definite winners on this album.......2005-12-14

My favorites are "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" where Daniel truly shows off his vocal talents. I could have done without the choir backup on "Ave Maria" but nonetheless a great rendition.

The ending that he has for the "The Lord's Prayer" almost brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. Well done Daniel.

4 out of 5 stars The Spirit of America.......2005-10-10

This is a great CD...of course, Daniel Rodriquez is the best!!!
As much as I enjoyed it, I do think "In the Presence", also by the same vocalist, is the ultimate. That could be because "In the Presence" was the first CD I had of this tenor vocalist, who is outstanding!

3 out of 5 stars A really mixed bag... Very Good and Very Fake.......2006-08-19

John Denver was a really complicated guy. Real highs and abyssmal lows. His music is already beautiful, so if you also cringe when you are relaxing around a campfire when the acoustic guitar appears, there are songs here to skip.
Will Oldhams' version of 'The Eagle and the Hawk' and the Red House Painters "I'm Sorry" cover the cost of admission twice over. They are the most moving songs on the album. You have to buy the album for those two songs. Brilliantly done. The Innocence Mission pulls off 'Follow Me' hauntingly well. If you have an afternoon to adjust your equalizer the Low version of 'Back Home Again' is excellent as well.
I wish I had never heard the Tarnation version of 'Leaving on a Jet Plane'. How can you make a bad song so much worse? The Rachel Haden song has an artificially sweetened bubble-gum feel with over-the-top horn that places it in a bad Japanese cartoon. The other Red House Painter's/Kozelek songs are very well done and are solid. The other songs on the album are very easy to forget. They are blown opportunities by bands that were trying to make the songs more beautiful than they already are by adding gimmicks and overproduction. There is no depth of feeling that grace the originals. If thats your thing maybe you should search out "The Boston Pops play John Denver"....

    4 out of 5 stars great interpreters.......2005-12-30

This quirky CD is the perfect example of the fact that there is an endless number of great songs out there in search of a great interpretation. I did not realized until listening to this CD what a beautiful song "Annie's Song" is. The music industry needs people like this-- people with great voices and interpretive talent to record the already existing great songs. It reminds me of Al Green's version of To Sir With Love. Who would have thought....

4 out of 5 stars sunny days of past and present.......2005-11-04

My mother used to have a well loved and beat-up copy of a two lp john denver live album. She would always play it on saturday mornings when she was cleaning the house. I associate songs like Matthew, the Eagle and the Hawk, Poems Prayers and Promises etc. with morning sun, the smell of pine-sol and lemon pledge and my mother's strong alto pulling me into another childishly happy morning.

I discovered Mark Kozelek through his work as Sun Kil Moon. Their first album was an instant favorite. Right from track one, standing at a listening station in a Borders bookstore back home in Indiana, I knew I needed this music.

John Denver counts as a guilty pleasure for alot of people beacuse he was so resolutely uncool. He was an optimist, a new age-ey mystic AND a country flavored folk singer.
His craft though, at its height, was undeniable. His melodies are absolute human classics and his lyrics bear a soul that may not have ever been in danger of being hip but seemed genuinely good.

Kozelek and his gathered cohorts pay wonderful tribute to that fact on this sincere and fitting collection. Each song stands as a coherent interpretation and a pleasent re-invention.

This collection is likely the closest John Denver will ever get to being "hip" and perhaps he's not entirely out of place.

4 out of 5 stars A somber tribute to John Denver by alternative artists.......2005-03-03

The first concert I ever went to was to see John Denver and to this day when I drive through the Rocky Mountains I have to listen to his original "Greatest Hits" album. We first heard about John Denver for writing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and singing "Take Me Home (Country Roads)," but he became identified in my mind with Colorado and "Rocky Mountain High." But there was more than the glorification of nature in his music, and my favorite John Denver songs are "Poems, Prayers and Promises" and "Rhymes and Reasons," which can certainly be accused of being more spiritual than commercial in essence.

I stumbled on "Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver" because I was going on one of my periodic searches to find interesting covers versions of songs I like and I stumbled across the Rachel Hayden cover of "Poems, Prayers and Promises" on this album. In contrast with the moody and somber approaches taken by most of the artists on this album, Hayden provides a rather perky pop take on the song, with some interesting harmonies in the chorus. It is very different, but that is what is interesting.

That approach is clear from the opening track of the album, "The Eagle and the Hawk" by Bonnie Prince Billy. The shortest of all John Denver songs, this is another personal favorite because of the guitar introduction. But Billy just sings the song a cappella in a simple haunting manner that gives you no other options but to listen to the lyrics this time around. As soon as he starts singing you know that this is a tribute album to someone who has died too song. The other defining element is that these are not artists that you would think of as being anything remotely close to John Denver. But they must have listened to him in their youth and compelled them to pay their respects to his music in their own manner.

For example, it seems the Red House Painters only sings songs of haunting sadness as a means of purging emotions, and their two tracks her are decidedly in that spirit. The sparse instrumentation and Mark Kozelek's introspective vocals emphasize the confessional aspects of "I'm Sorry." But the group relies entirely on almost wall of sound instrumentation to turn "Fly Away" into a dirge (A commentary on the circumstances of Denver's death? Perhaps). At the other end of the spectrum there is "Follow Me" by the Innocence Mission, where Karen Peris' vocals remind me of Melanie (the folk singer, not either of the Spice Girls).

Despite the often quite moody approaches often taken to Denver's songs (e.g., Low's "Back Home Again"), I think many of his fans will be open to what these artists are doing with his songs. Granted, chances are they will not find everything here to their liking. But there will be a couple of songs here that will catch their fancy. Most of these songs might be somber and moody, but they are certainly respectful and I cannot help but thinking with many of these tracks that these artists are literally performing them as if they were at the funeral (cf. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by Jason & The Scorchers or "Rocky Mountain High" by the Yonder Mountain String Band ).

    5 out of 5 stars A magnificent album........2002-02-21

As a person who is a huge fan of Dylan's songs but really dislikes his vocals, I have searched long and hard for a tribute album that I liked. Ironically, I found it in this "ain't no tribute" album. These are GREAT interpretations of the songs of Dylan. My only complaint was that there weren't more songs; a two-CD set would have been sweet. Otherwise, great.

5 out of 5 stars diverse, interesting and soulful.......2000-02-01

this compilation has almost no weak spots. every tune is unique and surprising.. I especially liked the rendition of "Lay Lady Lay" It is haunting and seductive. I can't help but think that if Dylan ever listens to this disk, he'd like it.

5 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding compilation of Bob Dylan's music........1999-07-21

This is a CD that I will listen to for a long time. Just as you're listening to the end of one song and regretting that it's over, another starts filling the room and you're filled with joy at the prospect of 3 or 4 minutes more of outstanding sound, sound you can see and feel.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-12-06

Not sure why this says it was released in 1999. Maybe it's an import version, as I was listening to this album more than a decade ago.

In any case, it's excellent. If you like Spirit of the West's style, this is certainly one of their best albums, if not the best. It's easily listenable from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Spirit at their Best.......2004-01-26

This is Spirit of the West at their absolute best. Their combination of excellent instumentation, tight harmonies, and cutting lyrics makes this an essential listen for those interested in celtic-flavoured pop/folk.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD. One of the best bands you'll ever hear........2002-08-01

This is a band I have liked since the late 80's. They are from Canada, and have never really made it big in the States like so many other Canadian bands, (barenaked ladies, Nickelback, Rush, etc), but this band is one of the most energetic, exciting, and talented bands you'll ever hear. I strongly urge you to check out Spirit Of The West.

5 out of 5 stars An Audiophile, Earthy - Alison Krauss / String Quartet.......2005-10-28

This CD was the deciding factor for me to buy Von Schweigert VM1 Monitors with Subwoofer. There is just so much warmth, musicality, nuance and emotion. In some ways better than the original. Better in the sense that the String Quartet transports you to a new yet familiar world. So it is a combination of Bluegrass, Classical and Jazz. A must have album for Audiophiles, fans of Alison Krauss and for those exploring new forms of music.

    4 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Guitarist.......2003-11-06

This album highlights the incredible talent of this long gone little known artist (Died 1986 aged 32). Michael Mann, nicknamed Hollywood Fats by Buddy Guy, produces so many memorable moments with his unique phrasing and guitar lines. The music style is West Coast Jump blues (some give the band credit for inventing it), swing and country blues. Not all of the music is to my taste, but Hollywood Fats is so ear catching, you have to admire even those tracks which don't appeal in style. Hollywood was mentored by Magic Sam, Buddy Guy and Freddie King. Played with Muddy Walters, J.B. Hutto, Albert King, John Lee Hooker. Played with the Albert King band until Mr. King became too jealous - some credentials! The vocals are by Al Blake which are not so great but he does excel on harmonica on several tracks. The legendary Larry Taylor is also on base. Unfortunately there is not much more recorded output that I am aware of apart from on some of the James Harman Band recordings and the Rod Piazza album Harpburn.

4 out of 5 stars hollywood fats "rock this house".......2001-04-26

I just resently heard this played on the local (St.Louis) blues station. I did not know anything of Hollywood Fats or for that matter hear anything buy him. I could not wait for the DJ to take a break so that he would mention what artist he was playing. Not only did he say it was Hollywood Fats he also gave some insight into this man. He has been around, played with all the big names in the blues. And this recording has some really good musicians. Unfortunately Fats is no longer with us. But his music lives. This recording is a must have for all blues lovers.

    Album Description

Boston's The Douglas Fir, whose principal songwriter is Jay Walsh, may share similar influences to NYC early '80s revivalists such as Interpol, Longwave, and The Walkmen, but they beat those groups to the punch, having played their blend of chilling, atmospheric, effects laden pop since the late '90s. They're also better than the aforementioned bands, adding more colors and a softer touch to the mix, bringing to mind underrated legends such as The Chameleons, The Church, and The Straitjacket Fits on this monumental debut album. And then there's the songwriting; Walsh's spectacular, vivid lyrical narratives flow like your favorite short stories or those old Hitchcock films name checked on "My Favorite Thing." Don't miss out on this one! -The Big Takeover Magazine
