This is awesome!.......2002-12-13
Awesome CD!!.......2002-06-07
I like classical numbers more than like traditional songs of
other countries, so the 1st one was wonderful
(Of course as well as the second one.)
When you want to relax, you may choose the 1st one, but
if you want to be excited, choose 2nd one!!
You will feel as if you were out of this world.
I absolutely LOVE this!.......2002-02-20
The first CD is absolutely beautiful choral music which is really relaxing. I DO prefer boys' singing to adults, because it just sounds so much better.
When I bought the CD, I wasn't expecting much out of the second CD because I bought it for the first CD's sake, but the second CD turned out to be my real favorite.
Not that I don't adore the first one, but the second one is SO IRRESISTABLY CUTE!! whenever I listen to it, I keep on smiling and going "awww. isn't this cute!"
It is REALLY sweet and fun to listen to. I just LOVE this CDs and want to give 10 stars out of 5, but obviously there are limitations, so..
Well, if you like choral music, you won't regret getting this one.

This 28 track Best Of contains their Bell Records hits, 5 previously un-issued gems, and scintillating B sides! The booklet includes interviews with Bobby Purify and producer Papa Don Schroeder. The Real Righteous Brothers!!!!.......2004-06-25
They also sound good on a very pop sounding ballad entitled "I Remember".
It is a shame these guys aren't better known. They made some great soul music. If you are a 60s soul music freak (like me) you will love this CD.
What's missing...?.......2003-11-19

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season. --David HurwitzAmazon.com
Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:
Ladies & gentleman: The Lord'n Savior, God Almighty.......2007-06-13
So Fashionable, and So Disappointing.......2007-02-01
Specifically: John Tomlinson sings like he thinks he IS God, instead of singing about Him. Heavy, cumbersome, and overblown. May I add boorish?
Arleen Auger has a very sweet voice. And??
Despite the program notes insisting that certain segments of this Messiah are given to "the contralto", Anne Sofie von Otter is NOT a contralto. Not even close.
The male alto can barely sustain a legato line - why he insists upon throwing in those complicated, badly-performed embellishments I can't figure. Well, I can, but I'd really rather not say.
Wake up, choristers!! It's 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born," not "Oy, I have to go to the grocery store today."
Boy do I regret having spent almost $40 on this one. Thank goodness I have the Colin Davis to console me.
A nice combination of period nad tradiitonal.......2006-12-17
This 1988 recording sits between the euqally English, euqally period-ifnluenced Hogwood and Garidner. Of the three, Hogwood sounds more 'authentic' because it uses boys in the chorus and singers schooled period practice. By comparison, Pinnock's soprano, Arleen Auger, and mozeeo, Von Otter, are essentially modern singers--gorgeous ones, of course, Gardiner is far more anemic in his conducting and uses a scrwny-sounding orchestra, so if that's more authentic, so be it. Of the three, Pinnock gives us more traditional music values in his emotional expression and instrumental timbres.
The competiiton is mushc stiffer now than in 1988, but Pinnock's reading has survived the test of time. He is not a genuinely inspired conductor--sadly, Messiah has become a cottage industry that excludes most big-name talents--but neither are Gardiner and Hogwood. (For sheer musicality, I tend to put my money on Andrew Parrott, Robert King, Marc Minkowski, Niklaus Harnoncourt, and Rene Jacobs.) But he's certainly good eough. The reason I haven't given five stars is that the male soloists aren't first-rate, and in particular the Wotan voice of John Tomlinson sounds cavernous in the bass arias. Add to that Pinnock's tendency toward tepidness, and what you end up with is a very good but not great performance.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-21
I really love this recording.......2005-03-26
Some very good parts.......2002-12-14
The best Messiah for me is still Marriner's 1976 disk, much better overall rendition.
Great mezzo and trumpet.......2002-05-17
Its world-beater aspects include mezzo Anne-Sophie von Otter, whose "He was despised" is well north of magnificent: Warmly mournful in the slow sections, snarling and spitting in the center section.
Trumpeter Mark Bennett does by far the best trumpeting on any of my 30 complete Messiahs. "Glory to God" and "Hallelujah" are as good as it gets -- no, better than any other recording gets.
Countertenor Michael Chance is quite good in "If God be for us" -- I say that as someone who doesn't like countertenors.
Some of the other choruses are also well done. But tenor Jerry Hadley seems to have thought he had more lucrative things to do with his time than to think about Messiah.
And He Shall Reign Forever and Ever, Amen........2002-01-01
There are actually two versions of this live performance, the one here and the other is available on LaserDisc. I believe that they were recorded on two different performance time, for on some arias the soloists have different style in singing the cadenza. Whichever you prefer, this is a recording you must simply own - even when your music library boasts a dozen or so of Handel's Messiah!!

This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11
Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.
As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

Album Description
Bobby Purify a.k.a. Ben Moore, whose rich, melodious voice enhanced later hits by the duo James & Bobby Purify, has come out of retirement with the help of producer and songwriter Dan Penn and several legendary players of the American Soul era.Better To Have It features thirteen new songs, twelve of which were written by Penn with Carson Whitsett and Hoy "Bucky" Lindsey. Purify/Moore also adds one of his own to the effort.
In producing the album, Penn requisitioned an R&B brain trust. Key members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (Spooner Oldham, keyboards; David Hood, bass; Jimmie Johnson, guitar) and others, such as Carson Whitsett of Malaco fame, keyboards; along with Reggie Young of Memphis, lead guitar; and Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns; come together on this 16-track analog recording with superb results.
Featuring liner notes by legendary producer Jerry Wexler, Better to Have It is the "Must-Have" Southern Soul Album of 2005.

Soul Music From the Heart and the Gut.......2006-09-25
A Gem of Southern Soul.......2005-09-10
I understand, he's gone through some very hard times which, unfortunately, is not an isolated case. He's not the only great musician who's lack of recognition seems to be inversely proportional to his tremendous talent, yet this album -if it receives the proper attention it deserves- should change all that.
Exquisitely produced by Dan Penn and backed by some of Muscle Shoals greats like Spooner Oldham and Jimmie Johnson, this album is an absolute gem of Southern Soul. When Jerry Wexler, in the liner notes, mentions Purify's name next to Arthur Alexander or Otis Redding, I don't believe he's exagerating.
Bobby Purify, after almost forty years of singing, still has one of the most beautiful Soul voices I've ever heard. His tone, phrasing and capacity to bring out the heart out of every word is stunning, this is a master lesson on how to bare one's deepest feelings without ever losing sight of the song nor indulging in vocal acrobatic. Revealing everything without ever showing off.
It's hard not to mention every song included here, each a gorgeous example of great singing, thoughtful arrangements and dead-on atmosphere, but if pushed to it I've got to say that the ballads are the biggest gift. "Things Happen," "Forever Changed," "Testimony Of A Fool," and "Hate To See You Go" can be enough to justify a singer's career, let alone be found in one album.
The rest of the album does not stay behind and, again, the production and arrangements -the horns, guitar and piano are wonderful throughout- offer Purify the perfect backdrop to let it all come out and touch your heart like the sweetest breeze, or a longed-for blessing.
Title says it all.......2005-08-24
This album also can't be compared with Southern Soul albums of the '60s, even though it features players who supported such heavyweights as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Redding himself. The difference is not in the musicians' playing. See, this isn't a 25-year-old Otis running in place screaming, "Gotta, gotta, gotta". This is an elder statesman. Blind, broke, and without an ounce of bitterness. So this isn't as exciting as, say a Stax recording, but that's not a bad thing. Because not only has the Soul artist, his producers, songwriters, and musicians aged, so has the market for this type of music.
This album succeeds with a great and relaxed feel and songs that are interesting and memorable. Producer Dan Penn's typically entertaining and thoughtful lyrics and Carson Whitsett's unique and delightful melodies are a perfect template for Purify's warm and assuring voice.
Whitsett's trademark soulful and ever so tasteful B-3 organ adds to the atmosphere, as does his beautiful string arrangements. The album has enough variations in style to keep it interesting, but without losing any focus. There's the Whitsett funk of "Somebody's Gotta Do It" (which features a guest spot by Spooner Oldham playing a "Mustang Sally" like organ and Muscle Shoals vet Jimmie Johnson's classic rhythmic guitar chops), the great down home tale of "The Pond" (featuring somehow simultaneously beautiful and funky work from Whitsett on piano), and potential cross over Pop classics like "Forever Changed", a song that Penn, Whitsett, and Hoy Lindsey wrote with Solomon Burke (who scored big with their "Don't Give Up On Me") in mind.
Add to all this the contributions of greats Reggie Young on guitar (Pickett, Elvis Presley, Travis Tritt) and trumpeter Wayne Jackson (Otis, Al Green), and 30 second downloads just won't do. It's truly Better to Have It.
