Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. --David StubbsCustomer Reviews:

The Earth Turned On His Axes.......2007-05-27
Rushed out under battle conditions, Axis shows some ragged edges. The revolting cover, stupid even by standards of the day, was the result of a mix-up. Hendrix wanted the cover art to reflect his American Indian ancestry - the record company folks in England heard Indian and, (like Columbus in reverse) thought Indian Indian. Indian religion was all the fashion then, so it seemed like a natural. All this, however, does not explain away the unadulterated ugliness.
More harrowing still is the cab ride story. In the middle of recording the album, Hendrix took the masters with him to play at a party he was attending, forgetting them in a cab. (One must wonder if his absent-mindedness was natural or enhanced.) Realizing what had happened, Chas Chandler had to remix half the album in 11 hours - astonishing considering the amount of studio wizardry featured.
The writing is off throughout, lyrics were never Jimi's strongest suit, here it shows. Even the wonderful Castles Made Of Sand has writing that would have been flagged in a high school poetry class. The kicker of the litter is You Got Me Floatin' - soaring guitar and driving beat. The one perfect song, often overlooked, is One Rainy Wish, which evokes a very particular atmosphere and then morphs into something amazing, all in the space of 3:40. Little Wing is a perennial, lovely, and one of the rare Hendrix songs often covered. If 6 Was 9, and Bold As Love, showcase Hendrix in fine form. Both are anthems of the day, and both seem to keep switching gears, every time you think they couldn't be any more thrilling, they kick up another level.
Hendrix adapted and changed at lightning speed, a lifetime of evolution compressed into a few years. Axis is a flawed album, but as the necessary bridge between two near-perfect extremes, it is fascinating and satisfying.
Kowabunga!!.......2007-05-08
"Axis" is a little more introspective than "AYE"...it's like Jimi was telling us: "Here I am, at least now...whaddya think?" You hear his feelings about relationships in songs like "Little Miss Lover", "Little Wing", "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "You Got Me Floatin'". You hear his contemplations on spirituality and sci-fi in "EXP", "Bold As Love" and "Spanish Castle Magic" and social musings in "If 6 Was 9".
His arrangements were original, forceful, cocky and catchy. There was nobody else like Jimi Hendrix...anywhere! And it's a shame we lost him so soon after he hit it big...in fact, like so many OTHER rockers from the Woodstock era, becoming a legend by the time his second album, this one, had come out!
In one year's span of time, we lost Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass Elliott and Janis Joplin...! Now Joplin, as far as I'M concerned, was no great loss, though by no means am I glad she's dead, but Hendrix and Morrison were truly stellar talents that made the world of art and music poorer with their passing. There were TONS more talented female rock singers than Joplin out there and she was the first to admit it, (Mama Cass being one of them!) But Hendrix, perhaps the greatest black crossover artist ever, and Morrison...the musical reincarnation of William Blake himself, THEY left a gaping hole where some truly great music had been!
Maybe if somebody can perfect cloning before their DNA rots TOO thoroughly....
TIME DOES NOT GO BY... Neither in the SPANISH CASTLES MAGIC (nor these all time rock classic album).......2007-03-24

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah ChinCustomer Reviews:

also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.

Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to write and collect an embroiling and interconnected song cycle. Meanwhile, latecomer Duane Allman prodded Clapton to tear it up on guitar, so as not to be overwhelmed by his even more talented foil. Of course, Clapton eventually won the hand of his lady love. And then he divorced her. Sometimes real life messes up a good plot line. --Steve StolderCustomer Reviews:

It occured to me recently, that out of all the music I own, this is my favorite. I have listened to it countless times, yet it still moves me. So many other reviews have detailed what's so great about this music, that I won't repeat, but somthing magic happened during these sessions.
The studio was on fire........2007-05-08
The greatest album ever recorded.......2007-03-02
Everything builds to the end of the title cut where Clapton invokes Robert Johnson, "Please don't say we'll never find a way, And tell me all my love's in vain." Then the piano coda, and the quietly resigned "Thorn Tree." Perfect, never matched, never surpassed.

THE TESTAMENT AND CONFESSIONS IN THE LIFE OF MR. ERIC "SLOWHAND" CLAPTON........2007-02-12
MR. ERIC "SLOWHAND" CLAPTON is known the world over as "God." CLAPTON has achieved and accomplished everything beyond every great guitarist's dreams and more. This fact makes you wonder just how much more can CLAPTON push the limits of his expertise and knowledge in revolutionizing the sounds the guitar is really capable of producing and how it would be played. With this in mind, you will hear the real ERIC CLAPTON at his absolute best when he is playing the Blues. It is in the Blues that you will see and feel the true emotions of CLAPTON flowing through his guitar. This natural talent and passion is what makes CLAPTON the legendary guitarist he really is which defines what the real stuff of legend should consist of. In all due respects, "LAYLA" also represents the true testament and confessions of the legendary guitarist. "LAYLA" would contain one of the greatest songs ever recorded. "LAYLA" would also carry one of the many true tales of Rock legend. At the end of the roaring sixties, CLAPTON would already established himself with the reputation as being one of the greatest guitarists of all-time. It was also well documented and publicized during this time period that CLAPTON fancied and fell in love with his best friends wife. CLAPTON'S best friend was EX-BEATLE GEORGE HARRISON, the wife he would steal and later marry is PATTI BOYD HARRISON. What's sad and tragic about this story is that CLAPTON'S love for BOYD HARRISON would often turn to guilt resulting in beginning CLAPTON'S heroin addiction and seclusion. What's also tragic is that CLAPTON'S marriage to BOYD would be short lived and end in divorce. On a good note, believe it or not, CLAPTON'S friendship with HARRISON survived and both remained best friends till the day HARRISON died in December 2001. Everything that happened during this period in the late sixties would inspire CLAPTON to record an album under a different disguised name and proclaim his love for the anonymous woman of his dreams through his music. "LAYLA" is the result of what happened in CLAPTON'S life during that period which discloses and exposes his testament and confessions that he kept bottled up secretly inside him. In reality, PATTI BOYD HARRISON is the real life LAYLA. In my opinion, this time period would be one of the very few that would bring out the best in CLAPTON. In my opinion, "LAYLA" is a well recorded album that is a true testament of a sheer genius and a superb tribute to the legendary guitarist that has been called the greatest guitarist in the world.
But before CLAPTON would record his masterpiece album "LAYLA," CLAPTON would need to find passionate and dedicated musicians that shared his same interests, tastes and visions in music. When CLAPTON recruited fellow music legends BOBBY WHITLOCK, JIM GORDON, CARL RADLE and DUANE ALLMAN, DEREK AND THE DOMINOES would be born and Blues Rock with a mixture of Southern Rock would be taken to the next level and phase.
I will list and briefly review certain songs that are vital and relevant during the recording of this album. If you want to hear vintage CLAPTON playing guitar at his absolute best, listen to the breathtaking song tracks "I Looked Away," "Bell Bottom Blues," "Keep On Growing," "Anyday," "Tell The Truth," "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," the legendary Hendrix classic "Little Wing," and the legendary song that would inspire and begin the recordings for this album, "LAYLA." CLAPTON plays his guitar with such emotion and passion not heard from him before. In my opinion, the song "Layla" is one of CLAPTON'S all-time greatest achievements and one of Rock's all-time greatest contributions to popular music.
If you want to hear vintage CLAPTON playing the Blues at his very best, listen to the Blues songs "Nobody knows You When You're Down And Out," "Key To The Highway," the emotional confession classic "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" and "It's Too Late."
You will also hear beautiful ballads on this album such as "I Am Yours" and the beautiful acoustic "Thorn Tree In The Garden."
Overall, this is one of the greatest albums ever recorded by anybody. Listening to this album, you can actually feel the pure heart and emotion flowing through CLAPTON'S guitar. All of this passion would rub off on the other musicians which would effect the heart and soul of the music. The album "LAYLA" is the story of life and is actually regarded as a love manual.
I would like to highly recommend that everyone purchase this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of their own personal music collection. This legendary album has definitely proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, ERIC CLAPTON has continued to bless and grace us with his unique blend and style of guitar playing to this very day. CLAPTON is still regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all-time. Besides HENDRIX, CLAPTON has accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll and Blues music history that CLAPTON doesn't really have anything left to prove. CLAPTON'S place in Rock and Blues history is well secured and will never ever be forgotten. So here's to you ERIC. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my reviews in the near future when time permits. CLAPTON RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

You want relaxing classical music that'll soothe your soul but won't lull you into sleep? Here's a double CD for you. The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World ... Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. The performances of most of these excerpts are top-notch--artists include Sir Neville Marriner, James Galway, Jacqueline du Pré and the Philadelphia Orchestra--and there's enough variety here for everyone. --Edward GarabedianCustomer Reviews:

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.
Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.
To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.
Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)
So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

This two-record set on one CD collects 16 Paul Simon hits from his solo career after Simon & Garfunkel without much rhyme or reason. The selections are not in chronological order and several of the cuts are oddly chosen. Those minor points aside, there are some landmark works presented on these discs. "Hearts and Bones" is a brilliant depiction of a crumbling love affair, while "Slip Slidin' Away" uncovers the hurt of divorce and middle age with a groove that's pure mid-'70s decadent. Simon's infatuation with rhythm is all over the place, from the reggae of "Mother and Child Reunion" to the South African bounce of "You Can Call Me Al." --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
Negotiations and Love Songs.......2007-05-13
Great stuff. Buy the CD and screw the Download A-holes like Walmart.......2007-04-26
You can call him genius.......2007-02-22
The CD opens with the reggae ballad entitled "Mother And Child Reunion." Although the title might suggest a happy event, Paul sings from the perspective of a man who might not be too comfortable with this reunion. "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" is a playful, upbeat song even though the person Paul sings of is in trouble with his parents and probably the law as well. Nevertheless, Paul's character remains unrepentant for any errors in his judgment. Indeed, he plans to run away with his buddy Julio so that he can be free from his parents and the law.
"Something So Right" boasts a beautiful melody and Paul delivers this song with great sensitivity; and "St. Judy's Comet" is a touching ballad about a father putting his child to bed. The words and music for "St. Judy's Comet" make this song a masterpiece.
Other classic and famous ballads on this retrospective CD include "Kodachrome;" "Have A Good Time" with its laid back musical arrangement and exquisite lyrics and "Still Crazy After All These Years" which tells the story of two former lovers meeting by chance and spending some time together. "Still Crazy After All These Years" sports a wonderful instrumental segment between verses, too.
"50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" certainly got its share of air time when it was released. Paul meets a woman and she encourages him to leave his current lover even if he doesn't become her own boyfriend. The melody stuns you with its sophisticated arrangement. The numerous "ways to leave your lover" are presented in a sing-song manner that is in sharp contrast to the sadness of a couple's breakup.
"Late In The Evening" also sports a reggae melody with a great backup chorus; and "Slip Slidin' Away" explores the experience of a couple's breakup with dreams of what could have been instead of the sadness of their failed relationship. In addition, "Hearts And Bones" has a great musical arrangement--love that guitar!
The CD closes with the famous "You Can Call Me Al." Amazon correctly notes that this number has a South African beat to it. The song sports a catchy, upbeat melody as it explores the good and bad of relationships.
The liner notes spend too much time on song credits. I would have liked an essay about Paul and his work but that is a minor disappointment.
Paul Simon remains one of the most successful songwriters of our time. Paul Simon's words and music explored universal topics relating to basic human emotions and everyday experiences. Paul will never be forgotten; his work will live on for quite some while to come. If you liked this CD I recommend other Paul Simon CDs including The Paul Simon Anthology and Surprise. Fans of rock and pop will also enjoy this CD.
My favorite.......2007-02-06
Although I only ever listen to half the songs on it, it's not the quantity that counts here. It's the quality.
The fact that Paul wrote both lyrics and music for every song on this wonderful album is a testament to his incredible talent in both those areas. The unique lyrics to songs such as Call Me Al, Slip Slidin' Away, and Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard are what set him apart from more mundane, cookie-cutter lyricists. They push him into the category of poet. And, the music is equally as refreshing, even after all these years. His unique phrasing also sets him apart.
The variety on this album makes it one I never tire of listening to. A definite gem, and the prize of my collection.
the man with the golden quill.......2007-01-06
Answer: He writes. Good grief, but the man writes.
There is a lyrical agility about the work of Paul Simon that stands almost unequalled in his period. A notion of liberal irony with a common touch leaks through most of his tunes and it ends up endearing the man and his songs to people across a wide continuum of opinion. I suspect that's because of the self-deprecating note Simon characteristically strikes.
The sheer verbal smarts of these songs, combined with what classical critics might call the occasional 'musical joke' astounds in retrospect, especially when one ponders the fact that we're only talking about sixteen years of music (a mere two-and-a quarter years in dog time).
Must be heard once a year to avoid still-crazy-after-all-these-years syndrome.

This Mark Knopfler-dominated release from Dire Straits (as if there were any other kind) features the ringing guitar work and clever lyrics we've come to expect from the band over time. The dark, moody gravel of Knopfler's voice mutters, mumbles, and muses through songs like "Telegraph Road" and "Private Investigations" and virtually giggles through the silly patter of "Industrial Disease." The title track and "It Never Rains" are solid, if unremarkable offerings from the band that has come to represent the epitome of one man's vision of good ol' rock & roll. --L.A. SmithAmazon.com

Huddy.......2007-03-18
I have been listening to this album for more than 10 years in cassettes and older CD versions. I even tried to get a LP version recently. Then I found this and picked this up recently as this is a remastered one. Believe me when I say this is the best version I have. The sound is full compared to the older CD version and I get an amazing feel when I play it every time. This is a very good remastered version. Highly recommend this remaster to all the quality conscious dire straits fans.
Masterly remastered album!.......2007-03-17
another great release.......2007-02-25
'Telegraph Road' tells a great story about the rise of a city. The many solos keep the song interesting and the great lyrics always keep you entranced. Most long songs can be boring or only exercises in ego and pretension. But not this one. This song deserves every minute of its running time. 'Private Investigations' is a nice slow song that reverts to loud quickly. The steady bass drum almost sounds like a heartbeat and the power chords heard here are stinging. The songs after this are almost like a concept album. The city in 'Telegraph Road' is now the setting for the last three songs. Or that's how i always imagined this album.
'Industrial Disease' is one of those strange songs you really don't know what to make of. This is the beginning of many songs with a similar style ('Walk Of Life' and 'The Bug', for example) This song has the same organ sound that almost makes it sound like a country song, if you forget the industrial type lyrics. The song can be amusing but as with many of Mark Knopfler's lyrics there is a element of seriousness underneath. The title track is a bit overlong, but does have a great ending with tympani. It's basically a song about a woman who does not look after herself and 'throws her love to all the strangers/and caution to the wind'. Of course in the next song (It Never Rains)she gets whats coming to her in the worst possible way by being 'taken out to vaudeville valley/with his hand up smothering your screams/ and he screws down in tin pan alley/in the city of a billion dreams..' after which a great guitar solo makes you feel that way.
Powerful stuff from a great band. This is easily 5 stars. Buy this and give it a listen.

After several years at the top of the rock world, Springsteen pulled back the reins on Tunnel of Love--a lot, not just a little. Members of the E Street Band played on the album but seldom in full-band arrangements. Then, too, there are the deeply conflicted songs--"Brilliant Disguise," "Two Faces," "Tunnel of Love," "One Step Up"--that may have been written in response to the imminent failure of his first marriage. There's more to the album than divorce-court play-by-play, however. There's also the raw rocker "Spare Parts," the sprightly "All That Heaven Will Allow," and the bold declaration "Tougher Than the Rest." Overall, these are some of his most thoughtful songs and most intimate performances. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:
Very introspective but very memorable........2007-05-24
Ironically BORN IN THE USA sounds dated today especially for Europeans like myself. It is a very American album but seemd more focused on America in the Eighties. TUNNEL OF LOVE dealt with more universal heartfelt issues that eveyone who has been in a relationship can easily relate to and that is its strength. It is very introspective and most songs are similar in mood apart from one or two (SPARE PARTS and TUNNEL OF LOVE). But it is a very honest album and very brave.
Springsteen had swung back and forth in mood on previous albums with darker albums like NEBRASKA and THE RIVER showing a subdued side as opposed to BORN TO RUN, GREETINGS FROM ASBURY PARK and BORN IN THE USA being more pop rock orientated.
Standouts are near the end of the album. VALENTINE'S DAY, ONE STEP UP, TUNNEL OF LOVE and BRILLIANT DISGUISE are some of his greatest compositions with hard hitting lyrics especially ONE STEP UP, my favourite song on the album. Apart from WHEN YOU'RE ALONE, all the other songs are very effective. This album shows Bruce Springsteen at his most hard hitting. Listen to CAUTIOUS MAN and VALENTINE'S DAY. Here is Bruce Springsteen, the epitome of the blue collar working man of America dealing with very masculine issues in a very vulnerable way. Men do not talk about this stuff!! So that is why I admire him so much more. I love BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, ROSALITA, BORN TO RUN and all the rock stuff he has done before this album. But this is a much braver collection of songs and he did not shy away from dealing with these issues in a very public way.

Tunnel Of Love.......2007-05-05
Now supposedly this is by Bruce Springsteen and The E. Street Band but since almost half of the band does not play a single note on the entire album this is really just a Bruce Springsteen album with a little help from some friends. Released after the massive success of the classic Born In The U.S.A. this album was destined to be judged, this is like Goats Head Soup for The Rolling Stones, it came out after Exile On Main Street so no matter how good it is people will compare it to the album before.
Tunnel Of Love is not a bad album, but at the same time Tunnel Of Love is not a great album. It is just average, and Bruce Springsteen should never make a average album because his talents are anything but average. Had Clarance played sax on this album maybe it would be better but he is not on here once. The same can be said for almost the entire E. Street Band.
The lyrics are personal and maybe the most personal of Springsteens career but in a lot of places they seem almost cheesey and that is just not Bruce. In other places they are so amazing and brilliant like 'Brilliant Disguise' which is a Springsteen classic, and the title track 'Tunnel Of Love' is a great track song lyricly. 'Tougher Then The Rest' is one of Bruces more personel and best songs ever lyricly and musicly. There are some more bright moments here and there but not too much.
Tunnel Of Love plays like sports comentary of a Chicago Bulls chapionship game except for the imminent divorce of Springsteens first marriage. Overall this is not a bad album, for the good songs it is worth it, the average songs not so much. Maybe had the production been better so would this album. For a true Bruce fan this is worth owning.
