If there's such a thing as a world-class bar band, the former Rolling Stones bassist's Rhythm Kings qualify. Core members Albert Lee and Terry Taylor (guitar), Georgie Fame (keyboards), Graham Bond (drums), and, of course, Wyman himself, are among the Who's Who of British blues and R&B. No wonder the grooves flow so easily on these 15 tunes, which range from boogie and Delta classics to Motown soul to disco, even including a cover of the Beatles' "Taxman" delivered as a tribute to George Harrison, who played on the previous Rhythm Kings CD, 2001's Double Bill. Some interesting song choices and compelling vocal turns provide the highlights. The first is the neglected New Orleans gem "Down Home Girl," where Fame's molasses phrasing captures the laid-back pace of idealized life in the Crescent City. Beverly Skeet ignites "Cry Baby" in tribute to Janis Joplin, who immortalized the Garnet Mimms tune. And Ray Charles gets props with three numbers from his catalog, including a live recording of "Georgia on My Mind" that's beautifully rearranged for vocals and jazz guitar--the album's most adventurous turn. Wyman says he's ending the group's 16-year run here. If that's so, Just for a Thrill is a fitting swan song. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars What a Great CD.......2006-09-05

I first saw this CD at the local county library--had no idea Bill Wyman had ever recorded anything outside of the Stones. What a great CD-lots of great Rhythym and Blues by primarily English artists and tributes to George Harrison, Ray Charles and Janis. Terrific listening!!

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome CD............2006-06-22

Didn't know what Bill was up to solo lately - heard this funked out version of "Taxman" on Blues Radio Mobile and had to find out. Got the CD - wow. Continue to be blown away, every listen. Powerful, wonderful, toe tappin', finger snappin' - the vocals, the bass, the sax, the .... everything. Get this great collection of talent and enjoy. 5 Stars. Five.

Description

Musically, Ronnie Milsap is one of the few country-based singers who has a deep appreciation and knowledge of American standards. He grew up with them; he didn't have to "learn them." Ronnie knows the songs and interprets them wonderfully. A "standard" is a song that will never go away... the "standards" started in the late '20s and '30s and are "remembered" songs through the years...a "standard" is timeless and meaningful...a "standard" has become a fabric of our musical heritage...a "standard" has achieved greatness on many levels of sales and recognition...a "standard" is forever...a "standard" will never know an end...a "standard" is like an old wine, it gets better with age. This project is perfectly timed for Ronnie's audience...old and new. Songs include: I Don't Want Nobody To Have My Love But You, Teach Me Tonight, Cry, Make Believe Medley (Make Believe, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter), Bewitched, Haunted Heart, But I Do, Since I Fell For You, Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, But Not For Me, In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning, Just For A Thrill, My Funny Valentine, My Babe.

5 out of 5 stars Ronnie Milsap's sorely needed departure from country music.......2006-05-23

Ronnie Milsap's glorious voice and remarkable versatility put him in a much higher class than most mainstream country music artists. Just for a Thrill is an album project that is long overdue because Milsap's stunning vocal abilities have been overlooked and underappreciated by too many people for too many years. Just for a Thrill is his first non-country album in over three decades. It is a CD that simply proves Ronnie Milsap isn't limited to country music...he is any type of singer he wants to be at any given time! With a soaring vocal range that rivals Roy Orbison and remarkable versatility that only Linda Ronstadt can match, Milsap stands as one of the most formidable vocalists of ANY music genre!

Producer Jerry F. Sharell approached Milsap with the idea for this project, and it was a definite step in the right direction. I've always felt the restrictive country music format has hurt Ronnie more than helped him to a degree because it has prevented much of the music world from realizing just how musically diverse Ronnie Milsap is. After all, we are talking about a man who was recording mainstream rhythm and blues in the 1960's while playing shows with James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and others! It is sad that only diehard Milsap fans like myself are even aware of that fact.

Listening to this impressive CD, it is truly remarkable that a guy who is supposedly a country singer can croon a jazz/pop standard with the very best of them. Ronnie sounds nearly as convincing on these songs as Tony Bennett or Nat King Cole would! He soars on "Cry" and "Since I fell for you", and his beautiful voice is smooth as silk on "Teach me tonight" and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning".

The highlight here for me is Ronnie's punchy, vibrant version of the blues standard "My Babe" which he delivers with as much gusto as anyone could. You wouldn't expect a man in his 60's to sound this strong and vital, but Ronnie's voice is as rich and pure as ever. The whole album is exceptionally produced with big and brassy musical arrangements. Ronnie sounds right at home in this lush setting full of strings and horns.

I would have never bought this particular CD if it had been recorded by any other artist since this isn't my favorite style of music. However, Ronnie Milsap is one of those great singers who can raise nearly any song to a whole new level and make it more appealing. It is a rare gift called "MILSAP MAGIC". Just for a Thrill is surely one of Ronnie Milsap's finest efforts, and was nominated for a grammy for best traditional pop recording of 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing...You will enjoy this collection!.......2006-02-27

As a long time Milsap Maniac I have all of Ronnie's country albums, CD's etc. I saw Ronnie in concert with my daughter about 4 years ago and he performed "My Babe". The crowd went nuts for it. I guess this has been in the works for quite a while.

Personally, I have not heard most of these songs done before, but I must say that Ronnie's voice and energy are a great match for the lyrics. My favorite song on this CD is "Bewitched". Wow!!! A great tune to sing along with and get lost in the lyrics with.

Hope to see something new from Ronnie soon!

2 out of 5 stars Right Tunes, Wrong Voice.......2006-01-29

Milsap jumped on the "standards" bandwagon with this one. Unfortunately he's no Sinatra or Bennett and fortunately he's no Rod Stewart, either. If you want to hear these tunes as they were intended to be performed, stick with the old benchmark recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Best ever!.......2005-01-04

I am just amazed by Milsap's enduring talent. He's still got it! His diction, phrasing, timing, rhythm and confidence really shine through. He is 60+ years old and his voice is still so strong and controlled. You might expect someone's voice at that age to quiver, splatter or falter, but his never does. The orchestra on this CD is fabulous. It is one of my treasured CD's. I know I'll enjoy listening to it for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the most underrated trombonist today.......2007-02-10

I live in MA and have had the opportunity to listen to George live on several occasions. He is playing great well into his 80's! Every solo is a new melody and not a bag of tricks or patterns. This CD is my favorite of his, although, I own all of his CDs. Sit back, have a nice glass of wine and enjoy this CD!

    5 out of 5 stars George Masso.......2000-01-28

George Masso has played at the annual Sweet & Hot JazzFestival in Los Angeles over the Labor Day Weekend many times. The sturdy tromboning of George Masso has been an inspiration to many young instrumentalists who have come under his tutelage. If you love jazz, listen to this quiet, unassuming artist play some of the most beautifule trombone your'll ever hear.

      Product Description

-- For years, accomplished San Francisco jazz vocalist Pamela Rose has thrilled audiences with her infectious brand of swinging jazz. Now, for her fourth and latest release, the appropriately titled “Just for a Thrill”, Rose delivers a thoughtful and inspired blend of original songs, standard classics, and some undiscovered gems. Every track on the CD is delivered by way of buoyant and mature arrangements, and spiced up with Rose’s confident and resonant voice that is five parts distilled jazz and one part sultry blues. Whether she’s swinging hard to “Lover Come Back to Me” or delivering the searing title track of this recording, Rose has the rare ability to find and deliver the very essence of the song. Rose is not only an accomplished jazz and blues vocalist but a savvy student of the idiom. And in “Just for a Thrill,” Rose listeners will find a satisfying collection of soulful and romantic songs. In addition to five new tracks co-written by Rose and producer partner and guitarist Danny Caron (Charles Brown), Rose provides fresh renderings of classics such as Edith Piaf’s “La Vie en Rose”, and the almost-lost jazz gem, “Old Piano Plays the Blues” (co-written by none other than the venerable Steve Allen). The result is an album more mature and intimate than anything Rose has recorded before. Every one of the album’s twelve tracks unfolds with a confidence and subtlety that makes the listening experience quite a thrill. --
