The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

People are surprised to find this CD in my collection. But I just say, "With the music, the beat, the lyrics, and the harmonies on this project, what's NOT for a middle-aged, Southern Baptist, white woman to like?" They just laugh and so do I as I crank it up a bit louder and sing along, drumming my fingers on the steering wheel of my Buick Century.....

Hmmm...that reminds me. It's time to buy another copy of this one....

I detest hip-hop. Really. I hate it. In fact, when I first heard Luv Is A Verb on Intermission, I thought, "They're kidding...right?" and had no interest in purchasing "whatever cd that came from." And I didn't until I heard great things about it. Since everyone who had heard it told me they loved it, I decided I should try it out, but only if it was cheap, which it was. I couldn't believe how good it was! It starts out with Luv Is A Verb, and I thought, "whatever, heard that before", but the rest of the cd is almost perfect!
There are a few interludes that are basically not worth the time, but if you're in the mood they can be funny.

The primary songs are (just skip down if you already know about them from other reviews):

1. Luv Is A Verb - Enter the infamous, "down with the dc Talk, d-d-down with the dc Talk, are you down with the dc Talk, d-d-down with the dc Talk." I can't count the number of people who I have heard make fun of those lines. But if you try to forget that, the lyrics are very good. "Luv is enough if it's unconditionally, given now ya livin' out the Great Commission" Great words. Toby McKeehan really outdid himself on this song. (I'm trying to omit how tired of this song I am. It's a great song, but it can get old really fast.)

2. That Kinda Girl - This song describes the "kind of girl" that "loves the Lord" and is "virtuous in every way". Toby raps his head off in this one. Kevin and Michael still both have great voices, but back in '92, they had incredible voices, which are displayed in this song and actually, in all the tracks. The beat is undeniably an early-nineties beat, but it's catchy, and more of that comes up next.

3. Jesus Is Just Alright - If you think about it, dc Talk have done scads of cover songs, probably their most known one being "In The Light", but this one is not to be ignored. Toby's rap is so catchy it's bound to be in your head, at least in small portions, for a week or so, even if you only listen to it once. The part that always gets stuck in my head is the last rap part, which is "Never trite when I write cause the Lord is my light and His word is my bond so ya know (know, know), He's alright." Great beat, underlined with repetetive but not annoying keyboards.

4. Say The Words - This is probably one of my favorite dc Talk songs, but not this version. You've probably heard "Say The Words (NOW)", which is the remix of this song. This version is lacking in any melody other than what is sung by Michael and Kevin. The rest is an overuse and underuse of bass and electric guitars. But Toby's rap toward the middle is great, climaxing with "choose to lose the pride that may tug at you, don't be afraid of the words I love you".

5. Socially Acceptable - This has slowly become my favorite song off this. Toby later described this song as one of the "phatest" beats off this cd. It is. My favorite lyrics from this one are the poignant words in the chorus, "it's okay, in whose sight?" Good reminder that it's not okay to do what everyone else is doing, just because they're all doing it.

6. Free At Last - "WHAT???" Don't be distraught at the first 30 seconds. Soon the strange intro morphs into one of the most awesome Christian songs of the 90's. Backed by a choir in the chorus, this showcases Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith's best vocals. Toby's rapping, too, is some of the best in their history. "The father first receives us, the truth then frees us, forgiven, now I'm living like a man full of Jesus", that's some handy rhyming if you ask me.

7. Time Is... - "Straight up rock-n-roll", it begins...well, maybe. This is probably the most guitar-driven song on Free At Last, but definitly short of rock-n-roll. However, I personally love the almost uncontrollable sound of Kevin Max's vocals on the chorus. Mike Tait's voice is good here too, and Toby constantly is rapping "tick tock tickedy tock". The song drifts into a rock song with a strange beat, then, according to Toby's "orders", they "break it down" and return to hip-hop. But it goes back to that rock/pop beat towards the end again. This is a genius song.

8. The Hardway - "I guess I'm the kind of guy that has to find out for myself." This song, according to Tobymac, has been remade more than four times (I only count four, but he knows best, I guess). This song is a great song that ends with "I'm on my knees and I'm crying for help." This is the only song that is not fast-paced, and as such, had to be included on Intermission, but this version is great, too. It's a beautiful cry out to God acknowledging His power and our weakness.

9. Lean On Me - "Oldie but a goodie", the first words you hear on this song, are definitive of this song. It's an awesome rap/hip-hop version of the original song by Bill Withers. Don't think this version is anything like what you could've heard on the radio. Toby's rap isn't included in the edited radio version. I think they drive the song rather well, so don't miss this song.

10. I Don't Want It - Song about abstaining from sex until marriage. Good message, good beat, and Toby's rapping isn't even in the least bit annoying. Kevin's and Michael's singing are great. Again, their vocals are even better in this song than in the later songs.

11. Word 2 The Father - Just when you think they've outgrown their "rapping language" you hear this song. It's good, but so reminiscent of Nu Thang (but that should, of course, be expected, since the song is a pun on all the names of their songs from Nu Thang), it's just kind of annoying.

Overall, this is an awesome cd, I suggest it for Christians; who love music, or dc Talk, or even modern Christian rap/hip-hop, since this is how it all started. If you want more of "Jesus Freak", go try "Supernatural" instead, but if you even remotely liked "Nu Thang", even if just for its nostalgic value, you will absolutely love this cd.

The band's best work in retrospect.......2006-03-29

Don't get me wrong, I liked NU THANG when it came out (heck, I saw them on the tour with Michael W. Smith and my copy is autographed by all 3 of the trio) and still put it on from time to time though I snicker at some of the songs now. Some of that, admittedly, is due to the fact that I'm now 35 and not really in the 'target' audience of teenagers this music was aimed at when it came out in 1992. [I don't feel the empathy with the pro-parental communication message of "Talk it Out" that I may have when I was still a teen myself.]

This one, though: I still listen to it and for the most part it's holding up well outside of a few minor clunkers. This one found the crew working harder to integrate samples, snappy melodies and harmony vocals, more skilled rap (don't get me wrong, Toby Mac has never been a GREAT rapper but he's honed his skills more here. He's more of a 'pop' rapper..akin to the likes of a Will Smith or a member of Bell-Biv-Devoe than a Christian counterpart to 2PAC or Biggie.), and a more cohesive feel to the album as the sound coalesced more into R&B tinged pop with rap icing.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"That Kinda Girl" was the band's statement about the allure of the Proverbs 31 woman, a woman who's "virtuous in every way/The kinda girl that makes me say/I hope she comes my way". It was the antithesis of L.L.'s "Round the Way Girl" and the tune really nails it home with "Hey, the girlie ain't playin'!". "Jesus is Just Alright" is a great techno-influenced jittery update of the Doobie Brothers' classic complete with what is probably Toby's best rap break of the album . If you can past the jokey intro, title tune "Free at Last" marries a traditional black gospel choir sound to scratching and R&B sounds with a little rock guitar as accent to create an anthem celebrating the life one finds after embracing Jesus. The choir testifyin' on the hook is irresistible but the samples from Martin Luther King just make it niftier. "The Hardway" bemoans the hard lessons learned when we violate God's Word while being honest enough to admit that we all do this as sinners. ("Some people got to learn the hard way/I guess I'm the kinda guy who's got to find out for myself...I'm on my knees and I'm cryin' for help")

LOWS:
"Luv is a Verb" isn't outright bad but it does have some of the most unfortunate rhymes here ("drain-o" and "explain-O"..ACK!). "Lean on Me" is a pretty boring cover that more or less rips off the cover done by Club Nouveau only 4 years before. It simply doesn't add enough different to make the tune DCT's own, save a brief Toby rap break. (The Nouveau rendition stripped the soulful plaintiveness of Bill Withers' original, so I'm not sure why they chose to emulate the clearly inferior version anyhow.) "WDCT" is the weakest of the interludes heard here.

BOTTOM LINE:
Quantum leap from NU THANG. At the time, it managed to get them onto the then super-hip Arsenio Hall show (the "2 Honks and a Negro" bit was taken from that appearance). I consider this their best release. (CCM Magazine has also named this as the #9 Christian album of all time.)

Life Changing..........2006-02-19

This album changed my life during my formative years. It was nice to have music without all of the cursing and blatant sexual overtures during a time when it was prevalent in jr/high school. It helped me to stay the straight and narrow, yet have some fun, hip music.

Nearly 14 years later, it still has the same effect on me. While I may listen to secular music today, I still feel good listening to DC Talk's Free At Last and reminds me why I'm a Christian.

Originally released in 1972,as this was never considered to be one of Free's best work,but it is decent.Looks to be the band's last lp with bassist Andy Fraser and guitarist Paul Kossoff(R.I.P.).You get the album's nine tracks,plus six(6)bonus cuts of mostly alternative edits of the lp's tracks.Tunes here I liked best were "Catch A Train","Magic Ship","Travellin' Man" and their Stone's cover of "Honky Tonk Woman".Shouldn't to hard to locate a copy of.

All the idiot reviewers who gave a less than favorable review
of this album are completely deluded.

This album was indeed the best album FREE did. From Andy Fraser's song "Catch A Train" all the way thru to his song "Goodbye" -- this is a rip-roaring album with absolutely,
excruciatingly gut wrenching lead guitar from the one and only Paul Kossoff. What else can I say about the vocals from the master himself, Paul Rodgers, the greatest rock vocalist that ever walked on two feet...

The extra tracks, although alternatives, are magnificent, especially Rodgers solo version of "Guardian Of The Universe".

Anyone who gives this version a less than favorable review is an idiot.

To the reviewer who said that it was Rabbit playing keyboards on this album is also deluded -- the piano work was done mainly by Andy Fraser....

I remember well when this album came out. I bought it immediately as soon as it hit the record shops back in 1972. It is still a great pleasure to listen to today.

Rock Me Rodgers!

Under-rated & unfairly maligned album from the original Free.......2004-10-23

This album seems to be almost uniformly criticized in reviews but I would make a case that it holds its own fairly well against the rest of Free's catalogue. True, it is not all up to the consistent high standard of `Free and Water' or `Heartbreaker', but it nevertheless contains much good material and demonstrates clearly the evolving style of the band, away from the relatively simple arrangements of the early albums and towards the keyboard-dominated sound of `Heartbreaker'. This album was the last by the original four members of Free, but though he is not credited I suspect that some of the keyboard work might have been by John `Rabbit' Bundrick, who officially joined the band later, for their final album. Although there are a couple of tracks which some might regard as `filler', the standard of composition and playing is high, with the shorter more concise songs near the start and the later songs being more lengthy, slow and thoughtful. There is a sense of introspection in some of these later songs which matches the mood of much of the `Heartbreaker' album, and this evolution of Free's sound should not be dismissed just because it differs from, for example, stompers like `All right now'. So although the band was undoubtedly suffering from internal disputes and the effects of drug use during the making of this album, it has always deserved a place in the collection of Free aficionados. Don't be put off by the criticisms of the critics, as I was for many years, and give it a hearing with an open mind. (There are also several bonus tracks, although these are mostly alternate mixes and not of major interest)

Such a poor finish..........2004-06-19

I'm a big Free fan so it's hard to admit that 'Free at last' is a very disappointing album. After the great songs found in Free's earlier works, this patchy effort is merely a haphazard collection of various left over song ideas which have been tossed together in the musical salad bowl that is this album. Fraser's bass lines plod along... where is the prowesss / mastery demonstrated in 'Mr Big'? Kossoff plays as though he is half asleep, Rodgers sounds tired. Kirke's drumming is the only redeeming feature of this album. The remastered album contains one good 'bonus' track... a honky tonk piano based rehearsal of the Stones' 'Honky Tonk Woman'. This album is for fanatical fans only who can't bear to see a vacant space in their Free CD collection...

Buy this, it is superb. "Sail On" features some of the finest guitar sounds I've heard in a long, long time. Kossoff, you fool, you were wonderful.

Another musical milestone from DC Talk. Listening to Free at Last is like looking through a Kaleidascope. A wide spectrum of musical images are presented through the soul-stirring songs. "Free At Last" has an electricity of excitement and vibrancy which allows the listener to enjoy and participate in the beat, and be a witness to what Christ has done to bring such a fulfilling life to these guys who witness through their music so well that it isnt pretentious at all. Everything comes across candidly and as real as if they were in your living room. Real kids with a Real important message that they love to play & sing about.

After releasing three full-lengths for Solid State Records, South Carolina's Stretch Arm Strong signed with We Put Out and recorded "Free At Last" with producer James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Academy Is, Underoath) and mixer Ryan Greene (NOFX). Then they headed to Europe for the summer festivals and some sold out dates with Pennywise. They're currently on a co-headlining run with Haste The Day. Look for upcoming US tour dates. With the record of their career, new management, and a new label, Stretch Arm Strong are refreshed and poised to take over the world.

Urgent HxC.......2006-08-06

I'd put SAS on par with Rise Against and maybe Strike Anywhere. Clean vocal hxc punk with pop sensibility and shout out loud chorus'. If you like NOFX, Rise Against, Story Of The Year or Thursday, you'll like SAS and 'Free At Last'.

I picked up this album based on a review in HM magazine. It got a 4 out 5 and I've been a fan their music since their early days. Was it what I was expecting? NO not at all! But that's a good thing. There is definitley alot more clean vocals in this release, and it turned out to be a really good thing. I love the whole trend of Scream/Sing flowing through about every track. The chorus's are very catchy and will have you chanting along after a few listens. And the lyrics, are really mellow and simple, which is good at times. It also shines with very fast punk rythms and the signature Stretch screams. This band has provided us with a great mix of punk and hardcore. I Like alot, pick it up, most likely you won't regret it.

Perfect blend of herbs and spices..........2005-12-26

Stretch Arm Strong has really blended a more evolved sound (a.k.a more singing) while still maintaining much of the feel of their older albums. So many bands seem to go fully one way or the other but these songs are a really nice balance. Melodic when it should be, hardcore when it should be and just well-done all the time.

SAS kinda fell off my radar since so many other bands that I discovered along with SAS either broke up or took a turn for the worse. Luckily SAS is still going strong.

A True follow up to Revolution Transmission.......2005-12-19

Being that Revolution Transmission is one of the greatest albums ever it is great that we finally have a follow up worthy of this praise. This cd is the ultimate blend of punk and hardcore. It has everything you would want in an album. It has punk tendencies but does not forget about breakdowns and two-steps. I love the sound that SAS has evolved to over the years and I can tell that this cd will be one that will be hard to pry from my cd player. It only takes a moments listen to "The Hardest Part" to know that this cd rulles! So pick a copy up if you haven't already especially if you are in to SAS at all. It is WELL worth the money spent!

This album has a perfect mix of punk/hardcore. This is getting my vote for best album of the year in that category

A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24

Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.

As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.

Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.

I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.

Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23

Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.

The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.

The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)
