Lulu Is Always On Track!.......2004-10-04

Ten years after "Independence" was released to great critical acclaim, Lulu offers up "Back On Track", a stunning new album just out on the Mercury (UK) label. Whereas Lulu's recordings of the 90's focused on her great handling of R&B / Dance material, her new material returns to the rock roots that influenced her early career. She is older and wiser now, but her taste in good songs is still impeccable, and the inspiration she received from these compositions results in some of the best vocal performances she's ever recorded (and that's saying ALOT). Every track here is a winner; and even within the rock range that personifies this album, Lulu still manages to inject some soul and tenderness, most notably on "Supernatural", with it's Al Green / Hi Records feel, and "Sentimental Heart", with it's wistful, bittersweet melody and background chorus. Other strong cuts include "Slow Motion", "Could I Be More Blue?", "Roll The Dice", and "Yeah, Now You Love Me". The production is terrific, and reminds me of Jeff Lynne's work with George Harrison: crisp, clean instrumentation mixed with perfectly balanced vocals. Interestingly, the final cut, "Where The Poor Boy's Dance", an aching and heartfelt reflection on memory and longing, is a completely different mix than the Almighty single version, including another set of lyrics. Both versions are worth seeking out. This is a terrific album, and I would highly recommend it to new and old Lulu fans. I hope she is already working on another!

Lulu "Back On Track" Like A Locomotive.......2004-05-16

Lulu returns to her rough and tough rock roots. This album is full of rockers and ballads. "Keep Talkin, I'm Listening" was released in the U.K. as a single. "Yeah, Now You Love Me" is perfect for Lulu's rough voice. "Slow Motion" is a real cooker and would be great for U.S. air play. "Could I Be More Blue?" has an almost "country ballad" feel. Lulu's vocal on the ballad "All The Love In The World" is rich and soulful. "Supernatural" is a "feel good" kind of song. "Roll The Dice" is one of those rousing numbers that you just have to move to. "I Love You Goodbye" could easily be a hit. Lulu's "Kiss And Tell" is like a revival. Lulu proves that she is not afraid to try new directions in her music. This project reveals that many songs were written by Lulu herself. The songs flow together very well but never sound repetitious. The only problem with this CD is that it will probably never gain airplay in the U.S. If you are a die hard Lulu fan, this one is highly recommended for your collection. While very different from Lulu's CDs in recent years, this one will grow on you fast.

Tailor Made For Top 40 Radio.......2004-05-12

Unlike her British Birds 1960s contemporaries like Sandie Shaw and Cilla Black who have taken stabs at contemporary-style music with uneven results, Lulu has been Back On Track since the early 90s with continuous releases of great, rollicking, gutsy recordings. No slouch in the song-writing department, she co-wrote "I Don't Want To Fight", the amazing Tina Turner hit, and quite a few of her own '90s recordings. Back On Track is a change of material insofar as its much more rock'n'roll and much less club/dance than her '90s stuff. "Keep Talkin', I'm Listening" is a major hit awaiting recognition, as powerful and gutteral as any Melissa Etheridge effort. This song is ideal movie soundtrack material. As in any CD certain tracks are real standouts, some others take a few plays to grow on you, but there's not a genuine throw-away in the whole bunch. Mercury Records kept this album on hold for 2 years...WHY? It's the perfect mood-elevating CD for when you're driving to the clubs or the beach. Search for it on eBay for the best price.

Lulu's Truly Back On Track!!!.......2004-03-31

This is Lulu's greatest album! While I love her 90s releases on the Dome label, this is a Rock and Roll Lulu. She has returned to the style of music that made her a household name in the UK. Her voice is more mature and she is using it in a way that she wants to use it. It is a great voice and the compositions are perfect with superb production work. This is Lulu taking charge of her career and she is proving she is far more than a 60s icon of the British Invasion. She is a current recording artist to be reckoned with. There is not a single track that does not belong on this CD. There is nothing in the nostalgic vein. She is re-establishing herself as full-time singer/songwriter and she has what it takes. "Keep Talking, I'm Listening", "Yeah, You Love Me", "Slow Motion" are among my favourites but this album is so good that once it is over, I find myself hitting replay! After "Together" and her "Greatest Hits" (with DVD) this is the perfect follow-up. Lulu is a gifted singer and no one is telling her what to do; she knows what to do and I hope that more albums of this quality follows "Back On Track". I only wish it were a bit longer (it clocks in at some 45 minutes)
but it is well-worth the price to pay for an underrated artist showing that she never lost the rock and roll heart that was beating in her soul. You will hear that on this excellent CD. Have no qualms about this album. Lulu is truly "Back On Track"!

Not really..........2007-07-11

This has the feel of the classic Sly Stone albums, but lacking in their liveliness, with a couple gimmicks thrown in simply to modernize the sound (buzzing keyboards on "Shine it On"; talkbox on "The Same Thing (Makes You Laugh, Makes You Cry)"; electric piano and disco rhythms on "Who's to Say?"). It's sad to see Sly reduced to this: he even takes some of his old ideas and dresses them up in new packaging ("Sing a Simple Song" + "Everyday People" = "It Takes All Kinds"). Of course, Sly was gone at this point, little more than a drug-addled recluse, struggling against the tide, trying and failing to reclaim the glory of his '60s material. It's laid-back, lazy funk: most of it is in the same tempo, every song sort of bleeds into each other, but not like the songs on There's a Riot Goin' On did. Kudos to the bassist: he does overuse slap a bit (obviously a Larry Graham imitator), but he holds down a solid groove: a couple of the songs are decent as far as imitation classic Sly goes ("Sheer Energy", with a harmonica; "Remember Who You Are"), and the album's very listenable, even if most of the songs are bad.
And I'm not anti-Sly by any means, no matter what this two-star review may imply: Life, Stand!, There's a Riot Goin' On and Fresh are all solid records. Far better than this, too.

Sly's last really good record - almost up there with Fresh.......2002-07-01

I'm a nearly religious devotee of Sly, but certainly not blinded by the light. While his late 60's stuff was raw and funky and his early-mid 70s stuff (most notably Fresh and Small Talk) were the absolute pinnacle of positive funk, most of his later efforts reek of chronic burnout and disco sellout.

Not so the aptly titled Back on the Right Track, which is a rare gem in his late career. While it's not quite as funky, creative or soul-stirring as Fresh-era Sly, it's a solid record full of short and simple but really tasty grooves... and for those of you who tune into Sly's higher frequencies, he feels more spiritually present on this record than he did on most of his mid-to-late 70's recordings, back in the positive groove that made us love him. The highs on this record aren't his highest, but it's consistently cool and there isn't a lame moment on the record.

My Sly favorites: Fresh and Small Talk, and immediately after those i would rank Anthology ('cause it has most of the best of Sly's earliest stuff), High On You and this disc, in no particular order. If you dig Sly at all and the sample tracks don't turn you off, you'll probably be very happy with Back on the Right Track. If you're new to Sly, then buy Fresh, Small Talk and (if you're down with 60's soul) Anthology first.

The Best Of The Later Period.......2002-05-28

After comparing this album with Sly's other albums (post Fresh) I have to say that this is easily the best. Recorded in 1978/79 you'd be forgiven for thinking that his mid 70's stuff would be better, but unusually this is not the case.
To me (and many others) it seems that Sly's ego and his paranoid delusions of granduer and omnipotence got the better of him after 1970.
Part of the problem was that 'The Family Stone' had left him in '73 and any creative input and boundaries that they may have been able to put in place were overtaken by more than a modicum of self indulgence and obstinance.
This lack of focus meant that Sly spent most of his time with his head in the clouds after the number 1 single 'Thankyou Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Again'(1970).
On this album though Sly captures some of his earlier form. It is also not ruined by the 'diaphonous' master tapes that would be re-recorded over many times, for numerous and often unsavoury reasons. (think of the album There's A Riot Going On)
With members of the original band back on board and with some kind of monetary focus the awful sound quality that is present on There's A Riot has been completely eliminated.
There are certainly more than 2 good tracks here. I'd wager that ALL the tracks here are above Sly's 'own' average.
My only gripe is that many of the songs are under 3 mins and the album clocks in at less than 30 mins in it's entirity.
I think that this was a ploy by either the record company, the band, or Sly himself to try and condense the studio work into some kind of chart success. This, unfortunately was not to be and the album was a failure of sorts. Whilst it didn't perform in the charts it is certainly worth reconsidering if you are looking for something to compliment the 'Greatest Hits' packages.
Regardless, this is the only album really worth hunting out after 'Fresh', or possibly 'High On You' and as such, in many ways, marks the end of a distinguished career of a flawed genius.

What a shame though that the sound quality and coherence of the music on here is so absent from the releases that should have marked his glory days, after 1970. Sly only has himself to blame though.

greatest boston band.......2004-05-23

this is the greatest hardcore band to emerge from boston, and that's definitely quite a statement, considering the eminence of the numerous bands that have emerged from that city. every song is an anthem, and if you don't scream along with anthony "wrench" moreschi at least once while listening to the album, you are a substandard human. haha, just kidding. but seriously, this is revivalist youth crew at it's greatest. the lyrics are on target and even have inspired me. now that's the mark of a serious band. it's a tragedy they broke up.

What can you say about this band? They are so hardcore it's not even funny. I love these guys. I laugh so hard at all the football metaphors in the lyrics. They rock. What else can I say? "Stronger Than Before!" Ha-ha-ha!

This band is so hardcore, it will make your panties burst into flames. It's got speed and heavy guitars and lots of yelling. This is exactly the type of music that will give a newborn baby severe learning defects. These guys are the starting quarterbacks of hardcore. The name says it all. TEN YARD FIGHT

Another winner for TYF. If you don't have this yet, go get it. This is the best of the best. The Boston hardcore/sXe scene is one of the greatest, and these guys are the one fo the best from good old MA. I repeat, this band and CD rock!

Not Really Humble Pie, But Not Bad............2007-05-24

First off, Humble Pie WAS Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton, not Bobby Tench and this journeyman-for-hire guitar player. That is not to denigrate the contributions of Greg Ridley and Jerry Shirley. They were an integral part of what made Humble Pie unique and great. That being said, this is a damn fine album!!! Good tunes and tight, rockin' playing! If you had never heard the original band you would enjoy this disc immensely. This may have been made to help out Mr. Ridley, whose health was in serious decline when this was recorded. You could do worse!!! Although I don't play this as much as say,Town and Country or Performance, I do pull it off the shelf on occasion and crank it up and have a rockin' good time!! Recommended.....

Album Description

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07

This Double-Disk Collection contains music from the original and varied Oz Stage Productions: "the Wizard of Oz", "the Woggle-Bug" (based on 'Marvelous Land of Oz) and "the Tik-Tok Man of Oz" (based on 'Ozma of Oz'). There are plenty of "Wizard" songs and music, but there isn't a lot of "Woggle-Bug" and/or "Tik-Tok Man".
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?

Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20

I think that this is a wonderful album of HISTORICAL value. Not too many people know this, but "the wizard of oz" was made into a smash hit in 1903, but because all the history was BARELY in obscurity, hungry tiger press wanted to educate the blockheads in the world about this remarkable piece of history. that being said, david maxine collected all of the old material, such as Piano rolls (my especial favorite of all of them is "the poppy song", i LOVE the bass notes: "nnn-ded-deh mmmm-ded-deh"), and music boxes, and cylinders, and records!
however, it is quite a shame that that CRAPPY movie with judy garland pushed this lovely musical into obscurity. i would have liked to see it in my day, but it was already lost in darkness, but thanks to the highly DIGNIFIED people in the world, this cd is available!! BUY IT!!!! I *ORDER* YOU!!! YOU CANNOT BE DIGNIFIED WITHOUT THIS REPLACING YOUR "RAP" GARBAGE WITH THIS JEWEL!!!!

Why the 1903 "Wizard" was forgotten.......2004-03-20

This truly remarkable 2-disc collection of old cylinders, discs, music boxes and piano rolls explains why the 1903 musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" did not survive the early thirties. It wasn't because it was before its time or even of its time, but simply because it was way behind the times. Its producers resisted composer's Paul Tietjens' attempts to write plot-driven numbers. His contribution survives only in the incidental music preserved on piano rolls (and the most interesting element on this collection) linking very disparate and even incongruous vaudeville acts by various authors and performers that graced the stage during the musical's multi-decade run. In other words, Baum was telling a story and the songs were telling another... As fascinating as they are for historical reasons, those numbers are commonplace, mostly uninspired flash-in-the-tin-pan ditties, with timid syncopation and a stong reliance on musical clichés. There is not a single standard among them and not even a decent lyric where "fine" doesn't rhyme with "mine" and "love you" doesn't rhyme with "I do"- or even "I know you know I know you do", as happens more than once. As an assemblage of shtick pieces and ephemeral sentimental or nonsensical ditties, this collection cannot be topped and it represents a monumental effort. Without it and its very generous and informative liner notes, I would not have the same appreciation for the absolute genius of Victor Herbert's operettas ("Babes in Toyland" came out the same year) where the more memorable songs are plot-driven and introduced and linked by the most luscious, inventive and varied incidental music ever heard outside an opera house. This sort of unified concept would culminate in Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" and it remains a truth today that the integration of plot and music - reminiscent of opera - is the true secret of successful and perennial musicals, whatever the current idiom. This collection also makes one appreciate the complete originality of the Hollywood film for actually going back to Baum's books, entrusting the songs, lyrics and music to Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg and Herbert Stothart and scrapping the musical's colourful but checkered history (except for casting ex-vaudevillians as the main characters, of course!). Highly recommended for its nostalgia value, its irreplaceable rarities and a better understanding of the history of American popular music.

A long overdue revisit to a classic American musical.......2003-09-30

Although it was one of the most financially successful stage musicals of the early 1900's, very little information is presently available on the 1903 production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. In what was obviously a labor of love, David Maxine has done much to correct this oversight by releasing a 2-CD set with over 145 minutes worth of extremely rare recordings of music from this and other OZ-themed musicals dating back to before World War I. Recorded materials include vintage acoustical disc and cylinder phonograph records, piano rolls, and music box discs, many of which go back almost a century. In addition, he has included two booklets worth of historical background information on the 1903 WIZARD OF OZ production, its stars, the individual musical numbers, and lyrics for the songs included on the CDs. (Lavishly illustrated with rare old black and white photos and artwork, these booklets, and the information they contain, are themselves worth the price of the set!) Several bonus CD tracks are included that offer rare recordings by Montgomery & Stone (the original Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow) and Bessie Wynn, who was also in the 1903 cast. Not just for dedicated Oz fans, this set is a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American musical theater and American popular culture of the early 1900's.

Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17

One hundred and three years ago, author L. Frank Baum published the best-selling children's book of the 20th century, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Although the book was adapted several times as plays, silent motion pictures, animated cartoons, and radio shows in the next few decades, it is the 1939 MGM film that most people think of as THE WIZARD OF OZ. The success and popularity of that film completely eclipsed the memories of previous incarnations and even the book itself in popular culture. However, prior to the film's release, there was a successful stage version which premiered on Broadway in 1903 and delighted audiences for many years, making stars of Fred Stone and David Montgomery, the original Scarecrow and Tinman. As with the MGM film, chilren who saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on stage carried fond memories of the production into adulthood. Ray Bolger was so impressed with the Fred Stone's Scarecrow, that he remembered it vividly as an adult and based his own protrayal of the character in the movie on Mr. Stone's stage version.

Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.

As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. THE WIZARD OF OZ: Vintage Recordings From The 1903 Broadway Musical contains over 145 minutes of terrific early 20th century music. You won't find "Over the Rainbow" or "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.

Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!

Guitarist Arthur Adams is primarily known as a session player, not to mention the bandleader at friend and collaborator B.B. King's Los Angeles blues club. On his first solo album in 20 years, Adams's guitar work is sure and deft, with the confidence that comes from years of experience. He's got a great voice, too, with an appealing smoothness that sounds fresh and contemporary, and that never lacks for expressiveness. The songwriting on Back on Track is mature, whether Adams is tackling the modern breakup (complete with lawyers and court settlements) in "Who Does She Think She Is" or exploring the complications of personal devotion in "Backup Man." He rocks out too, especially on the sensual "Honda Betty" (complete with horns) or the strong, driving "Jumpin' the Gun." If the music's not exactly mind-blowing, well, it isn't meant to be; its impact is felt in its unhurried thoughtfulness; Adams does ballads especially well. And, of course, there's the King guest spots on "Get You Next to Me" and "The Long Haul." --Genevieve Williams

This is a fun CD to listen to. The lyrics are original (well, as original as blues lyrics get) but insightful, and the music is snappy. Blues, rock, whatever, Arthur Adams (and BB King) put a CD together that I keep wanting to listen to.
