The best jazz CD you've never heard.......2004-04-21

Bill Stewart is one of the best drummers around--working with Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, etc. This CD received accolades when it came out and top marks in every Jazz Guide I've ever seen and yet it's out-of-print! Do what you can to put your hands on this one. The quintet is terrific. Stewart receives particularly strong accompaniment from pianist Bill Carrothers on this CD. Bill Stewart has played on several Bill Carrothers projects and they've played to rave reviews in Europe. Impeccable, tasteful, and flawlessly executed, this two-CD package documents guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ron Carter's interactions before live audiences in the mid-'80s. Previously released as single albums entitled Live at the Village West and Telephone, Telepathy gives ample evidence of the two musicians' empathy, sensitivity, and subtlety. Virtually every piece is taken at a relaxed, midtempo pace, offering the patient listener an intimate glimpse into two highly skilled craftsmen at work. Hall's rounded, bell-like tone and Carter's assured rhythms are extremely well-suited to investigate the harmonic possibilities on a variety of tunes, from "Blue Monk" and "St. Thomas" in the bebop vein to "Stardust" and "Embraceable You" on the standard side. "Two's Blues" and "Bags Groove" suggest cerebral blues, whereas "Summer Night" and "Candlelight" are given the pristine, introspective treatment at which these two are masters. Hall's inviting, accessible style has changed little over the past 40 years, and with Carter as the perfect foil, his sophisticated lyricism and deft use of chords are once again put on display. --Wally Shoup

Georgeous Songs, beautiful voices.......2005-02-15

Haunting and beautiful - this is a collection of well crafted songs sung by some truly wonderful voices. Its all late night dreamy melancholy with an uplifting sense of melody with some tasty turn of phrase. Its as good as Cousteau at their best but with more light and shade. A very emotional ride, but well worth it. I seem to get something deeper out of it with every listen, which is a good sign. Highly recommended.

This album by Cousteau alumnus Davey Ray Moor is a fantastic piece of work. The lush melodies are the perfect companion to those classic Cousteau records and if you like soulful brit pop, this is the record for you.

Good but not Great........2005-01-28

Ex-Cousteau song writer's debut album is a tad un-focused. The songs don't seem to be as well penned as the material he wrote for Cousteau. Also, his voice isn't quite up to some of the songs here. Not a bad album, just don't expect to be blown away.

Soulful blues from one of the great songwriters.......2000-07-11

With backing by Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, The Antone's House Band, and fellow New Orleans geniuses Snooks Eaglin and (The Meters) George Porter, Jr., Earl King delivers a standout album of ballads, funk, and uptempo boogies. Lyrically he covers things with humor, sensitivity, and invention. Songs like wry "Old Mr Bad Luck", the spiritual trance-like "Time For the Sun to Rise", the cautionary "No One More for the Road" and the ribald title cut echo in the memory long after listening. This is no down and out blues singer-- even when dealing with grim topics, King's turn of phrase and optimism (esp. "Make a Better World") lift the songs to another realm. His voice is gritty but warm in a spoken singing way and his guitar is percussive and biting. It's no wonder Jimi Hendrix, SRV and countless others have covered his songs and cited him as an influence.If you're having a party, bring some Earl King and let the "Sexual Telepathy" of his music get you and yours on the dance floor-- or on the floor.....
