Stay (a Little Bit Longer)
ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B0009JK0SY Release Date: 2005-06-21 |
Album Description
Earl Lowe was born in witfield town, Kingston, Jamaica at the start of the 1950s the youngest in a family of nine children. His father ran truck driving business with stone crushing as a side line! As a boy earl would go fishing with his friend Leroy sibbles, a friendship that would continue as earl and Leroy would lick chalice and make many moves together. He first became interested in music after listening to his elder brother Campbell who would make up songs. Whilst studying building engineering at st. Andrew technical college earl began writing songs himself and then visiting recording studios. Like most aspiring singers of the time earl ended up at the door of studio one. He was thirteen years old when after school one day he followed two friends to the studio to meet with the late Jackie mittoo. Jackie asked earl to come back the next day and voice a tune over a rhythm. The youth returned with a song he had learnt from his brother who when watering the family garden, had made up the lyrics of 'cool it' the cut was released in 1965 on studio 1. then earl went on to strike lucky with prince buster, who rechristened the youth as little Roy, and together they produced the first little Roy 45s. Pharon RCD. 2006

Hush!.......2006-03-16
Where THE MUSIC WE MAKE for the most part made its points and proceeded to get on with things (the interminable "The Invisibles" notwithstanding), STAY A LITTLE LONGER does just that - - to the point of staying too long. Oh, the overall length of the album is only 45 minutes; it's just that almost all of the songs themselves are too long (6-plus minutes) and, try as they might, just end up not adding up to much no matter how much is added along the way. "Seasonlong" opens things up with a nice ascending two-string bass line that's promising enough, and hushed voices and instruments (brass, baritone sax courtesy Lambchop's Deanna Varagona) are quietly layered as the song 'progresses' (read, gets longer). But after four or five minutes or so, you might find yourself wondering when the song is actually going to begin. And then it ends well over two or three minutes after that, as it happens.
Ditto for most of the songs. "Aqueduct" makes for a nice (a key word when considering Melochrome) instrumental, but it lumbers in at over seven minutes for no apparent reason. And I suppose the intended effect is one of hushed intimacy, but it's so archly executed that Melochrome might as well turn the amps up to 11, break out the fuzzboxes, use megaphones for the vocals and bellow WE'RE SO QUIET!!! at the top of their lungs. It's as if the CD should sport a "To Be Listened To At Maximum Volume For Minimum Effect" disclaimer. There are some problematic lyrics too. Most of them are ultra-personal, which is fine in and of itself. It's just that they come off . . . well, implosively collegiate a little too often. By the way, they have thoughtfully included the lyrics. They're actually on the CD itself; you can peruse them at your leisure when you're not listening to it.
There are two (relatively) upbeat numbers. "Summer Jens" would be all right (Jens, whoever or whatever else she might be, is a thematic holdover from THE MUSIC WE MAKE's "All The Jens In The World"), but the drums are tinny and boxlike (so all through the album; they should have let the drummer have a say in the mixing process) and the overall mix of the song is terrible and muted so that what should be a screamer is a whiner. The single, "Let's Work It Out", strives for an ironic Burt Bacharach-ish breeziness it doesn't warrant. Polite lablemates The Lesser Birds Of Paradise (all four of them, apparently) contribute polite handclaps a la "The More I See You" to it, but it isn't clear why Melochrome didn't contribute their own polite handclaps. Maybe they did, but said handclaps are so politely contributed they're barely audible. Darlene Poole's B-side "By The Seashore" is much better - - but darned if it isn't included on the CD. If you want it you'll have to get the single; it's definitely worth the effort.
It probably doesn't seem so, but I like Melochrome. Really, I do. Give them a try . . . just don't breathe too hard while listening. Afterward you can catch your breath while you read the lyrics.
