Pitiful.......2007-07-16
What a shame! One of the brilliant hard rock guitarists has turned into a clown.
enchanting voice..........2007-06-04
i got hooked on blackmore's night a few months ago after listening to 'ghost of a rose' and 'fires of midnight'. candice night's voice is simply angelic... dreamy in some songs, light-hearted in others. this album is more upbeat and pop than their earlier releases. i prefer their earlier renaissance tunes, but this is still a good listen. recommended for those who want a dose of of medieval music but enjoys a modern beat.
Nice blend - Rock On!!!.......2007-03-09
I love hard rock, heavy metal, and allot of the new age music,(some Celtic in nature) this is a very pleasant way to blend the two highly structured music forms together. Yeah, you can hear some quick little guitar riffs here and there. Glad Richie Blackmore and Candace Night got together!!!
I first bought the DVD, and enjoyed so much I have begun collecting the CD's. Hopefully a new DVD is forthcoming!!!
Wonderful Music!.......2007-01-07
"Shadow of the Moon" is my second Blackmore's Night CD and I enjoy listening to it as much as "Fires at Midnight" my first of their CDs. I listen to these over and over again without growing tired of their music. I like these CD's so much that I have given them as gifts to my sisters.
Pleasant Surprise.......2006-10-15
I was def. not expecting what was on this CD; This was the first of many similar outings by Blackmore and wife Candy, and certainly the best. While some may find the vocals a little too 'sweet', others will just get used to it. 'Wish You Were Here' is pure genius, and there are only a handful of so-so songs. I have always been a fan of Blackmore's guitar playing, and he does no wrong here...This is a nice 'semi-mystical-down-time' CD with alot of nice melodies, harmonies, and mood. Some sappy lyrics, but overall refreshing. Nice production, too.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

More does not necessarily mean better.......2005-09-21
This recording sounds less like the Boston Pops and more like 101 Strings. (That's not a compliment.) In fact, I know there are better performances of each one out there. These are actually all pleasant, familiar pieces which I like. I'm not at all sure they should all be on the same album. If you want background music while you're reading, or making love, this is perfect. If you're driving late at night and trying to stay awake, not so good! In short, the sum is less than the total of its parts. But I'm giving it a 3, because I do like most of the individual pieces, and I never give more than 4.

Contemporary composer Ned Rorem is typically likened to an American Schubert (living in Paris) for the fecundity, emotional range, and quality of his songs (though this represents only one facet of a prolific career). And Rorem's masterful 1998 cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen would seem to justify that reputation, as does this marvelous anthology from the Rorem songbook of the past half-century. The composer is fond of dividing musicians into the "German" and the "French," clearly identifying himself with the latter for the elusive sparkle and subtle play of shadows that characterize his art. What other kind of sensibility could "through-compose" Gertrude Stein's "I Am Rose" in a deftly perfect 27 seconds? Fortunately, American lyric mezzo Susan Graham intuitively understands this expressive aspect, as does pianist-partner Malcolm Martineau. Graham is constantly attentive to the marriage of music and text in the 32 songs here and phrases their little worlds into being with grace and wit. She can shade to a sweet vanishing point or allow her voice to blossom, orchidlike, into a dazzling profusion of colors. Few of these songs, which draw on the poetry of Walt Whitman, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and many others, last more than two minutes. But their resonance lingers, whether in the haunting "Opus 101"--with its lean but potent string trio scoring--or the enigmatic "That Shadow, My Likeness" from Whitman. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
One last touch of Paris (but oversold by the critics).......2005-10-11
Ned Rorem is the last survivor, since the death of Virgil Thompson, of the long reach that Paris exerted over a generation of American expatriate composers, many of whom drifted overseas between the wars to study with the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Rorem's songs sometimes have American folk roots, but mostly he writes chansons, and like their French counterparts, his are crystalline, spare, sophisticated, and precisely defined emotionally.
If he were more tlaneted he might have wirtten masterpieces, but mostly this sounds like Samuel Barber on skim milk. Rorem often sets minor, if not trivial poetry. His lyrical gift is modest. But there's no doubt that he has been neglected, largely because of his stubbornly tonal conservatism, and now that tonality is repsectable again, he is being accorded last-minute honors. I'm glad for him, and his best work, which consists of his multi-volume memoirs, has added much to American culture. But even when skillfully sung by an artist of the caliber of Susan Graham, a hour's worth of Rorem's tiny jewel-like chansons is about twice too much at one sitting.
wonderful perforance of excellent songs.......2005-01-20
I'm a neophyte to Ned Rorem's work. To be honest I purchased this CD because I really enjoy listening to Susan Graham. Although I really love hearing Ms. Graham's opera performances, I find it refreshing to hear her singing something in English. I also appreciate how she's taken time to perform something other than opera. Susan Graham's performance of Ned Rorem's songs has me seeking out other performances of his work.
Classic Rorem Songs!.......2004-05-18
Susan Graham has a remarkable mezzo voice and sings Rorem as though she really is a sounding board for the composer. Kudos to her and this CD comes highly recommended to newbies to Rorem songs and those many die-hard fans!
Come To Pop, Baby!.......2004-03-12
Recently, I heard Susan Graham on Garrison Keillor's "Prarie Home Companion" show. Wow! I didn't know who she was, but she had so much humour, verve and style while singing some show tunes, and that incredible voice. I rushed to amazon but all the English language songs I could find seemed to be on this album of Ned Rorem music. Well, whatever the weight lieder songs carry for the Germans, it seems that art songs in English mean songs you can't snap your fingers to, can't slap out a beat to and would never, ever, sing with your friends. I know, I know, I'm a Philistine, but please, Ms. Graham, give us an album of American popular classics, show tunes and the like. When I listened to you on Mr. Keillor's show, if I had been a bell, I'd have been ringing too! You are simply great. Don't let the classical music fans have all the fun. Throw a little our way too. Pretty please.
Worthy indeed - a gem.......2002-08-27
I cannot disagree with "A Music Fan"'s panning of this CD. Having first purchased the Hearing CD which he/she references, I reached the conclusion that Rorem's music was too knotty and "20th century" for repeated listenings and enjoyment. This CD with Susan Graham completely reversed my opinion. The songs are indeed chosen to be accessible, but they are much more than that. They are, simply stated, lovely. This is a disc I will play again and again, and has caused me to investigate many other Rorem CDs. I just came on line to buy it as a gift for a friend. Rorem deserves his due, and this disc gives it to him.

This dashing and intelligent tribute to Walt Whitman's poetry as art song puts commitment to artistry at center stage. With uncommon sensitivity and magnificent voice, Thomas Hampson lovingly interprets 22 songs by various composers, successfully capturing the emotional range of the American bard's verse by delicately caressing the poetry and, alternately, igniting its every nuance. These song settings enhance the innate music in Whitman's poems, giving them passionate expression in another dimension. Craig Rutenberg's stellar accompaniment is a lesson in effective collaboration. Hampson's interspersing of four poetry readings is below this recording's interpretive caliber, but it's a nice touch. Non-Whitman-heads may find the entire recording a bore, though. - -Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
A labor of love, but the songs aren't first rate.......2006-12-31
As a concept album, Hampson's 1997 tribute to Walt Whitman earned critical praise for its sensitivity and musicality. There's no doubt that the singer is in rare form here--it would be hard to imagine any of this repertoire better sung. He isn't a good reciter of poetry in the four spoken tracks. The major drawback, however, is that none of these songs are close to being masterpieces, and quite a few are decidedly minor. The avid listener can cncentrate on the poetry instead of the music, I suppose--Hampson's enunciation is crystal clear--but after six or seven items couched in the same rather timid Anglo-American art song form, this lavor of love becomes rather taxing as a listening experience. Taken a few at a time, however, these are intriguing choices that combine into a unqiue recital.
Couldn't find another place to ask, thus this line........1999-02-03
Am looking for the bugle calls commonly used when raising the flag and lowering it. Specifically, I am looking for "To the Colors" and "Retreat" in bugle calls. Do you have it?

about time.......2000-11-21
It's about time this long out of print gem by Labelle got reissued. Group member Nona Hendryx wrote most of the material on this release save for "Peace with yourself" written by group member Sarah Dash and the two cover tunes the Who's Won't get fooled again and the unedited funky version of Cat Stevens' Moonshadow.
All in all the vocals are top notch, the song selections strong and the instrumentation strong as well. I highly recommend this album to anyone that wants to here the early Labelle years.
Peace with yourself:-)

The Real Thing.......2007-01-27
I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.
Fantastic Collection of Favorites!!!.......2003-07-02
The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great debut.......2001-09-21
I give this 3 stars because I gave their 3rd cd "Fires at Midnight" 4 stars and I like that one better. Obviously, they can't all have the same rating when you like some more than others. I am suspicious when people give every cd they "like" 5 stars. To me "5 stars" are reserved for your favorite all-time classics, is every cd everyones fave all-time classic?
I digress, this is a great cd for a debut. I like Fires at Midnight more than this because it is darker and has a bit more of a punch. Shadow of the Moon does contain some great tunes, definately, but overall there are as many tunes that don't seem to go very far, typical of a debut. Also, Candices vocals should have been potted up a bit especially on the title track where she struggles to be heard. The music interludes sound nice but none are too distinct and they add more "mood" than substance. However, as a whole this is the most inspiring "new" music I have heard in a very long time with topnotch production besides. This is the best project Blackmore has been involved with. In many ways even outshining his work with Ronnie James Dio. This work is more mature and honest than any Rainbow disc.
WORDS CAN'T DESCRIBE IT.........2001-09-11
This album deserves five stars because Blackmore really proved his mastership of the guitar. The guy is a genius. His marriage with singer Candice Night resulted in this new offering by ex- Deep Purple popular axeman. What a shock, what a surprise ! All the fifteeen tracks shine with beautiness and perfectin, without boring you to death.
A bold step into a totally unexpected new musical direction.......2001-09-10
Never expected Blackmore to do this,. This album is amazing, delightful to listen but not full of commercially driven songs, a fact that would have killed the album. Candice's voice is also alright. It's fantastic music, very uplififting.
beautifully textured music with wonderful vocals.......1999-08-06
I purchased this CD with some reservations, as I have not heretofore been a particular fan of Ritchie Blackmore. Ian Anderson's guest appearance on the CD (in the song Play, Minstrel, Play) was the deciding factor for me (as a Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson fan). The CD is positively wonderful. One of the best new releases I have heard in quite some time. It is extremely listenable, beautifully textured music with wonderful vocals by Candace Night. The songs, all with a renaissance influence, are nevertheless distinct and interesting, rather than redundant as tends to be the case with some "period" music. This is a keeper. Enjoy.
Absolute Magic.......1999-07-15
This music is pure genious. It is haunting, uplifting, dignified, carefree yet serious, all on the same album. I was raised on Ritchie Blackmore's rock music, and have always been a fan, but his pairing with Candice has really appealed to my ethereal side. Anyone who wants to listen to a modern approach to Renaissance music must listen to this. I simply cannot stress enough how absolutely magical this CD is.

Customer Reviews:
"Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18
"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!
A Gem!.......2002-10-17
This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.
