SUBTLE IT AINT.......2004-03-19

If you like your BLUES traditional, you will hate this. These guys power through 10 BLUES / ROCK tracks like their life depended on it ( emphasis on ROCK ). Raucous and a whole lot of fun. These guys don't take themselves serious and create such an exuberant CD. I dare you to sit still through this one - it truely rocks. Both are good / great guitarists and obviously enjoy playing together. We know PAUL is great, but the surprise is KIDD who more than holds his own when they trade licks.
If you like the GUITAR - ELECTRIC BLUES - ROCK, you will like this. Crank it up and enjoy!!!

Disappointing,..........2002-09-30

I was pretty disappointed with this album. I've tried to let it grow on me, but have been unsuccesful. This album seems very thrown together, and reminds me of a recorded version of several impromtu bands I've been involved with in the past, where the 'band' was formed specifically for an upcoming party or celebration when someone says, "Hey, we should play some music at the party." Everyone agrees to it, and hauls any amp/PA/drum-kit equipment over to Bob's place about a week before the party 'cause he has the biggest garage and his neighbors are old and deaf. With about 6-days 'til the party, we slap together a set-list and plow through the songs. Invariably, the majority of the songs are 'blues' in nature as they are easy to pick up and improvise over. At this point, we decide that we need more, but are too tired to rehearse anything else, so we decide to play the 'extended-version' of a few songs,...one of which always seems to be 'Red House'.

While it's obvious the players are having a good time playing together on this album, it feels as though the listener is a secondary consideration. The tone of the songs is kinda humorous and light, which is fine, but overall I felt as though it was just a rehashing of straight-forward rock-n'-roll 101, with little in the way of pushing any boundries - a lot like walking into Bob's garage.

What happens when you pair Racer X/Mr. Big shed master Paul Gilbert with a classic rock/blues guitarist like Jimi Kidd, well you get "Raw Blues Power", with the emphasis on "Power". There are no subtleties here, no shyness, little restraint and no delta blues or otherwise. What you get is gigawatts of testosterone elevating solos by two extremely talented guitarists. These guys are not from the school of minimalists. If it doesn't contain 120 notes per second, it's not worth playing. This is not Eric Clapton and B.B. King or Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King. This is Godzilla meets Rodan. Call it what you might, just don't call it "blues". Sit down, strap a seatbelt on, crank it up and blast off.

This is a fun blues album with good songs and good playing from Paul and his uncle Jimi Kidd. Every song is good in it's own way and it's good to see Paul branch outside of the metal/ shred world and try something different. I highly recommend this cd.

If you are a fan of Paul Gilbert, the Blues and hard driving guitar playing you will love this CD. The family connection between Jimi Kidd (Paul's Uncle) and Paul is obvious when their intertwined solo's mesh into a seemless wall of power-blues. I think I chopped 15 seconds off my 2 mile run time while listening to this CD.
