Italian Soprano Renata Tebaldi was One of the Most Important Post-war Sopranos to Tackle a Wide Range of Puccini Roles, and During the 1950s She Recorded Several Complete Opera Recordings. Some of the Operas were Recorded Twice — in Mono and Then in Stereo. Amongst Those which Tebaldi Committed to Disc in the Recording Studio on Two Occasions Must Be Included La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. It is the Earlier, Mono Recordings of These Two Operas which Are Included Here and They Reveal a Fresh-voiced Tebaldi in Recordings Which, Despite the Stereo Remakes, have Stood the Test of Time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Tebaldi's art.......2005-09-29

This set covers the entire productive years of Tebaldi's recording career. Turandot, Butterfly and Boheme are from her earlier career while Tosca is from her later career. Since this Tosca recording is now out of print and is somewhat hard to find, this recording itself almost worth the cost of the set. In Turandot, you will find Tebaldi at her fresher voice, lovely and melting. Eventhough I would still rate Callas' first recorded Tosca as my first choice, this Tosca comes very close. Enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull.......2005-08-19

Fantastic recordings at a very good price. Tebaldi and Del Monaco rule. You should definetely own this set.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Renata.......2005-03-16

To say that these 12 disks contain some of the finest singing ever committed to disk is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact. Historical fact. In the 100 years (more or less) that Puccini operas have been around, only a few sopranos in each generation have been the equal of Renata Tebaldi. One cannot objectively say that anyone has surpassed her. Some opera lovers find her peerless in many of these performances. Personal tastes in singers vary, but no one ever sang these roles better. Few anywhere nearly so well. There is not a single note on any of these recordings that is not heartfelt to the core of her being. Like Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, she was luminous, gargantuan in her talent that personified an age. This is one of the great compilations.

Though this recording only contains two singers widely remembered today--Licia Albanese and Beniamino Gigli--it captures much that's hard to find today. With all singers here, words are projected with great vitality. They come first, not the pretty tunes, and conductor Berrettoni is the model of flexibility, always allowing the verbal and musical gesture room to make its point while letting the singers show off a bit by holding notes a shade longer than modern conductors do. Albanese claims her later Mimis were more dramatically mature; this one could hardly be more fresh and vivid, even if she isn't so vocally lustrous. Gigli is simply a miracle: Vocal riches aside, he uses his voice to give as three-dimensional a portrayal as has ever been given to the oft-sung role of Rodolfo. Nimbus's packaging is sumptuous, but the sound quality a bit distant. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE "LA BOHEME"!.......2004-12-24

There are more recorded "Bohemes" than one can count. But I always come back to this one. To me this is the most tender and moving performance that I've ever heard. Recorded in 1938 and I believe the first complete recording of this opera, the sound is not what today's listeners are use to, but if you can get past that you are in for a wonderful listening experience from the golden age of opera. Gigli's voice has a velvety sweetness that no other tenor can capture. And a very young Licia Albanese sings with such youth and innocence that she just breaks your heart. The whole cast sings with great feeling and they sound as though they are really enjoying themselves. There are a few ad-libs and exchanges among the singers that some purests have found annoying, But I find them charming and makes the characters seem more real to me.. I LOVE THIS RECORDING!!!

Get ready to hear Puccini's star-crossed bohemians as you've never heard them before. To be sure, not only is La Bohème probably the most widely performed opera, but it's one of the most frequently recorded, from the superb account under Thomas Beecham to Karajan's famous Decca version (still a best seller after nearly 30 years). And it's precisely because of the opera's popularity that clichés and overromanticized distortions have settled around performance practice. Riccardo Chailly's goal in making yet another Bohème was to clear these away, using a new critical edition of the score and respecting Puccini's own stated views on how the music should sound, how the drama should unfold. The result is a profoundly moving work of restoration that deserves to join the ranks of its formidable predecessors.

To begin with, this Bohème features a young cast--all in their 30s--of some of today's most characterful singers who together convey the necessary vital sense of ensemble. Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna (the couple first met performing the opera at Covent Garden) bring overwhelming chemistry to Mimì and Rodolfo. For once, we hear the arias of their famous encounter in Act I not as set pieces but as part of a larger momentum in which both are swept up. Alagna, with a thrillingly full sound to his top range, portrays a many-faceted Rodolfo, from dreamy poet and ardent lover to the man broken by loss, while Gheorghiu's radiantly sympathetic Mimì is a study in the use of subtle vocal coloring to dramatic effect. Elisabetta Scano sings an unusually light-voiced Musetta, as transparent as a boy soprano--a fascinating contrast to Simon Keenlyside's robust and charismatic Marcello.

Chailly's urgent, unsentimental approach to the score is, quite simply, a revelation, and the story moves forward briskly. His insight into tempo relation between the "big" numbers and transitional sections highlights Puccini's effect of comic high spirits mingling with intense pathos. Whether it's the aching solo cello in "Mi chiamano Mimì" or the impeccable diminuendo of the final tragic bars, Chailly's well-known mastery of detail foregrounds a lucid variety of colors and dynamics from La Scala's orchestra--its first recording of the opera in more than 30 years--that are often neglected in the music. The result is categorically a Bohème for our time. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars just a budding opera listener.......2006-09-03

Interesting to read all of the succeeding reviews. I would seem to be exposing my lack of musical judgement by admitting that I find Scano's performance exhilarating -- she radiates a tartness & brashness that I associate with Musetta. I wanted to find more recordings of her after listening to this La Boheme, not Alagna or Georghiu. Perhaps this is a result of my inexperience, or perhaps I haven't been influenced by other's opinions (yet).

1 out of 5 stars Disgusting... what a waste of money........2006-05-31

Chailly is the most incompetent conducter! His Manon Lescaut is just as horrific as this Boheme. Do NOT get it, or this one.

First of all, Scano is simply TERRIBLE. Her singing sounds like a sliding violin and she has a really ugly voice. Keenlyside has this really irritating vibrato that won't ever stop. Musetta/Marcello doesn't make any sense to me here. I don't know why Alagna has this very annoying lisp in his pianissimi.

Chailly's orchestration SUCKS. At times the orchestra drowns the singers, like near the end of Act II. His tempi are all screwed up too.

D'Arcangelo and Di Candia are excellent though. Gheorghiu is the reason I bought this opera, and she sings well enough. Though her spinto isn't as moving as in other recordings.

This CD is so bad. I'd rather listen to Bocelli's Boheme. There are so many other recordings of La Boheme that are a great deal better than this one.

3 out of 5 stars Better for less.......2004-11-17

For half the price you could get Tebaldi/Bergonzi/Bastianini/Siepi/Corena - and Piero De Palma - all conducted by Serafin in perfectly decent sound, also on Decca. Or of course de los Angeles/Bjorling/Beecham. Those two are my favorite recordings, but there are other good ones as well. The point? I don't hear anything on this release that surpasses - or equals - several other good recordings of Boheme. Given that it's on Decca, I suppose we should be thankful we didn't get Charlotte Curch and Josh Groban in the lead roles. Alagna and Gheorghiu are far better than that of course, but compared to the competition, they really are second tier artists.

5 out of 5 stars Bets La Boheme. Period........2004-04-26

This is the best La Boheme ever! Period. Better than Karajan's, better than Beecham's. The Beecham is an outstanding performance but it is marred by poor sonics. The Karajan is sooo slooow. As great as that performance is, the tempi drags and the sonics (although in good Decca analogue) cannot compare with THIS!! THIS has the best sound ever - my goodness the sound itself ravishes your ears and carries you forward. Not to mention that Chailly takes appropriate tempi that DO NOT DRAG. But the glory of this set is the incredible tenor of Alagna and the incredible soprano of Gheorghiu. Alagna's voice is gloriously lyrical and beautiful. So beguiling to listen to and he is dramatically alive. Gheorghiu's voice too is exceptionaly beautiful and she is even better than Alagna!! She is simply magic!!

So what are you waiting for, get the best La Boheme ever!! Now!!

4 out of 5 stars Not to be missed... This is the future of Boheme!!!.......2004-03-26

If you've not yet heard this new critical edition of perhaps the world's most beloved opera, purchase it now! This is the "new critical edition" of one of Puccini's finest moments!

Firstly, the sonics of the recording, the orchestra, and the casting (with the exception of Scano, whom is a terrible choice for the fussy, fickle Musetta) is outstanding. Together with the new score, expert conducting, and upbeat tempi (FINALLY!!!), I listened enthralled for the entire length of the opera. Each character is so incredibly believeable, and by the end of Act 4, you'll feel the desolation of their loss. I took a new interest to the often neglected Act 3 since this cast put their hearts into it. I don't care what anyone says, Pavarotti cannot act or put emotion into his Boheme to save his life!!!

The orchestra is perfect in Act 2, which is unusual to hear even in studio recordings because of the difficulty of this act's orchestration and perpetual motion.

My only qualm is with the casting of Elisabetta Scano. I cringe when I hear Musetta's "Quando me'n vo'" as she is used to singing Mozart, not dramatic, flashy, brash Puccini roles. Other than that, this CD is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Japan's DEEP RED is superior.......2005-06-23

This import CD from Japan has superior sound quality to any other version of this soundtrack I have encountered. Taken from Dario Argento's wonderful giallo film DEEP RED, the music from GOBLIN really sets the tone for this classic horror movie. The tracks are limited on this import (there is no "music box" music from the "house of the screaming child," but the few tracks that are included demonstrate superior recording and remixing. (School at Night is truly haunting) So, order the Japanese import, turn the lights down low, and you will harken back to a time when the atmosphere of horror movies was really scary. Dario Argento is the true king of modern horror, and the music of Goblin propelled his spooky images effectively!

5 out of 5 stars one of the best sound track of all time.......2007-05-10

I'm proud, because the film was made in my city, Turin, but I think is not for this reason I love this sound track, this cd is a lucky union of Goblin and the great Giorgio Gaslini my favorite jazz musician who write one of the best tracks of jazz rock of all times.

5 out of 5 stars Deep on Rosso.......2007-01-10

Perhaps known better in the U.S. as "Deep Red," "Profondo Rosso" is a soundtrack of progressive rock at its best. There is a great marriage of the rock group Goblin and Dario Argento's horrific tale. Both picture and music are hitting on all cylinders. Just like "Suspiria," the music from "Profondo Rosso" is like another character from the movie adding to the creepiness and style of the picture. In addition to the rest of the album, the title and lullaby tracks are great to listen to (check out the mad puppet's laughs.)

5 out of 5 stars Get Down With Da Goblin.......2005-07-25

Profondo Rosso is probably Goblin's finest hour in the soundtrack department, though I think many would debate that Suspiria and Zombi might be a little better. I won't go into the music, coz I can't imagine someone buying this cd who's unfamiliar with the film and the music from the film. You do get your money's worth, this sucker is 72 minutes long. My only complaint with this, and all the other Goblin soundtracks is that there are about eight billion different versions of the same song. I know people like this, but to me it gets a little irritating. The alternate versions aren't really all that different from one another(with a few exceptions)-at least not different enough to want to hear the song again when you just heard it one or two tracks ago. I mean, do we really need that many versions of the lullaby song? But on the other hand, I do respect the fact that Cinevox went out of their way to make this as complete as possible. And considering you have to take out a loan to pay for these soundtracks, it doesn't seem so bad in the end. What it really comes down to is-If you like the music when you watch the film, then you'll like this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Goblin's first soundtrack with Dario Argento........2005-06-25

Profondo Rosso a.k.a. Deep Red was a violent mystery directed by Dario Argento. The movie was augmented by a great electronic musical soundtrack from a little known rock band named Goblin. Dario liked their sound and wanted them to score his next movie. So, he brought them into the studio and showed them a rough cut of the movie. Claudio Simonetti (keyboard virturoso) and his band mates scored the chilling music. The music in the film is heavily synth driven. A couple of years later, Dario would call on them again to work on his opus Suspiria.

            Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Is Right !!.......2001-06-10

No doubt about it, this is the score that put Goblin on the map as a force to be reckon with (their first one to boot, mind you!) The influence of "Tubular Bells" is strongly felt here, but the musicianship of the band members surpass that of Mike Oldfield in my opinion. Their compositional skills are evident here too, as on the title track, "Mad Puppet",and "Death Dies". And one shouldn't forget Giorgio Gaslini's contributions here, composing the lovely "Gianna", and the eerie "School At Night" and "Deep Shadows". Simply, a marvelous score.

The original vinyl album had seven tracks and ran only 29 minutes long, so to beef it out, Cinevox went through their archives and included more than 40 minutes and 21 tracks of alternate versions that were in the film.

This is perfect for Goblin fans and fans of the movie. But for casual fans, since there were only seven tracks to begin with, we have multiple alternate takes here, including one of "Gianna", three of "Death Dies", three of "Deep Shadows", and seven(!) of "School At Night". Some are substantially different, others just slightly different. And the "original sound effect" track of "Profondo Rosso" is really just the confrontation between the protagonist and the murderer overdubbed on the "Profondo Rosso" track.

Still, when all is said and done, it's a great CD. If you're a Goblin fan or even a Dario Argento fan, there's no reason not to have this. The sound quality is excellent, plus there's great liner notes from Carlo Bagnolo and Claudio Fuiano and a special introduction from keyboardist Claudio Simonetti. Thanks for going the extra mile, Cinevox!
