His Very Best.......2004-11-02
To me, "In The Passage" is among his finest songs. A hard moving piece with some great guitar and piano licks. Like always, his lyrics deliver a great message, this time on the journey of life and the decisions we must make. "Ghosts" is another personal favorite - with its haunting sound and typical Fogelburg words: "Down the aging corridors and through the gates of time, run the ghosts of dreams that we left behind." Who can't relate to that. Finally, "The Reach" is a beautiful homage to Autumn and the life of the lobstermen of New England. In a few short phrases Dan transforms us from our chair to experience the sites and sounds of being on the seas with the rugged traditions of these sailors. Masterfully orchestrated with horns it is truly a classic.
I could go on, but that should be enough. If you want to get a Dan Fogelberg album beyond the basic "Best Of.." This is the one to get.
I'd buy this set for 1 song.......2004-08-24
To me, the hidden gem that I play over and over is Hard to Say.
Nice guitar work and those trademark amazing vocals are what draw me to this piece. That, and the fact that we've all lived through what the song is about.
Like many of Dan's songs, it gets you right where you feel it.
There are many quality songs in this set, but I bought it just for one, and enjoy the others as a bonus.

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

If Springsteen's debut, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. revealed just how ambitious a talent he was, it also fell just short of realizing those ambitions. No such problem with this, his second album. The Dylanesque wordplay is there, but with more narrative detail, as on "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)," "Kitty's Back," and "Rosalita," each of which became instant Springsteen classics and were demanded by his concert crowds for years. But even on this record, the music isn't allowed to take a back seat to the words--the latter two, at least, are full-tilt rock & roll numbers, with abrupt tempo shifts, soaring instrumental parts, and production that's just chaotic enough to make you wonder if the whole thing is going to blow apart and then smile in appreciation when it doesn't. The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle was the first time Springsteen scaled the heights of rock & roll greatness--but it wouldn't be the last. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

The most interesting of all Springsteen recordings- thanks to "Mad Dog"!.......2007-06-16
For me, it's exactly the explosive energy of Lopez that gives this, as well as the first album, a manic intensity that was lost when Bruce decided to oust Lopez for whatever reasons that remain cloudy to this day. Don't listen to the naysayers who haven't a clue how play drums in the first place, just listen to this recording and enjoy excellent songs, great production and most of all BRILLIANT drumming from "Mad Dog" Lopez!
Early Boss Still Ranks with the Best.......2007-02-18
"E Street" is an infectious blend of rock, blues, and jazz, in fact more jazz than would appear on the rest of his albums put together, as producer Jon Landau, who took over with "Born to Run", and Bruce himself would adopt a tighter, more structured style.
For me, "E Street" contains three great songs--the plaintive "Sandy" ("Sandy, that waitress I've been seeing lost her desire for me"), the evocative, Romeo and Juliet-tinged "Incident on 57th Street" (always "Spanish Johnny" to me--"good night, it's all right Jane"), and the anthemic "Rosalita" ("my machine she's a dud, I'm stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey"), the song I'd ask to hear if I could hear just one more rock song before I go. The piano segue between these last two is a musical thing of beauty.
"Wild Billy's Circus Story" (with the unexpected appearance of a tuba) and "Listen to Your Junkman" (which I'm sure goes by another title, but that's how I remember it, having listened many more times than I've read the liner notes) are also outstanding, but grow on the listener moreso than blowing his or her doors off the first time. The "title" track "E Street Shuffle" introduces the show in a rush.
Springsteen fans who discovered him in the mid-80s with "Born in the USA" should definitely treat themselves to this early masterpiece.

I've always felt strongly about what Hearts of the Innocent stands for. And a lot of their music, in all of their CDs are about stuff that I've thought about or I've experienced. I love that they care, and I love their music. I wear my Kutless T-shirt proudly and suggest them to anyone who's looking for great rock music.
A great combination.......2007-02-27
This band delivers!!!.......2007-01-25
The Hearts of the Innocent album is one of those few albums where 100% of the songs are good and at least half the songs are great. The title track pretty much sets the tone. After that there's a nice mix of hard hitting songs mixed with somewhat of a softer side before things really take off with Million Dollar Man.
If you get a chance, see these guys in concert. You'll come away with an appreciation for the talent that Kutless possesses at every instrument. Front man Jon Micah Sumrall's vocal range and energy makes a live show a powerful experience. He sounds the same in person as he does on the CD. No fancy studio enhancement tricks here. He's the real deal. It's also a blast to watch drummer Jeffrey Gilbert shred drumsticks.
Everyone has different tastes in music. That I understand. I'm 46 and like the sound as much as the teens in our Youth Group. I'd compare them to Skillet and I'm pretty sure the upcoming Brian Neal album will have a similar, hard hitting sound. If you like a hard, edgy sound I'd suggest you give Kutless a try.

With a slate of more than 200 shows a year, Ben Harper has never been an album-tour-album-tour kind of artist; for him and his fans, the stage is the ultimate proving ground. So after four studio albums, Harper has finally released his first official live set, a 25-song double-disc collection that surveys each of his four albums and adds a couple of well-executed, if not terribly inventive, covers. Disc one is electric and finds Harper and the Innocent Criminals tearing through their patented mix of rock, folk, soul, and blues. Yet, the solo-acoustic disc two is the true prize, putting the spotlight squarely on Harper's incredibly agile, versatile, and enormously moving voice. In this pared-down setting, Harper shows an uncanny ability to connect with his audience, offering one spellbinding performance after another. Culled from two years' worth of shows--no two songs are taken from the same concert--Live from Mars provides a welcome overview of Harper's many facets. --Marc GreilsamerAmazon.com

To dig his music, you must bleed.......2006-07-22
"Like a King" is one of the most harrowing songs, it goes back to the roots, an old gospel in form with a new story of another black man slipping into the cracks of this system. Originally written by Maya Angelou ("Still I Rise"), Harper added his own words, politicizing the song furthermore by introducing the name of King. "You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies, / You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I'll rise." The gospel is dedicated to Martin L. King and Rodney King, both victims of white American terrorism. "You may shoot me with your words, / You may cut me with your eyes, / You may kill me with your hatefulness, / But still, like air, I'll rise." The soul of this song is old and new at the same time. It's meaningful in many ways, and the broken down chords are slow and grave. I weep each time I listen to "Like a King," and I bleed with Harper, because that's the only way to dig his music.

Amazon.com essential recording
Fittingly for an album celebrating early- to mid-'60s pop and blue-eyed soul, An Innocent Man (1983) spun off six hit singles. Between the social concerns of The Nylon Curtain and this record's bopping tempos and blaring horns, Joel was at a peak of craftsmanship--the ultimate proof perhaps being the Chipmunks' rendition of "The Longest Time," which did absolutely nothing to diminish the song's winning charm. Much of America's enduring affection for Joel stems from this disc, and rightly so. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
My shark skin jacket and ditty-bop shades.......2007-06-14
"I would not be here now
if I didn't have the hunger.
And I'm not ashamed to say
that the wild boys were my friends.
Cause I never felt the desire
till their music set me on fire
and then I was saved."
The ten songs on "An Innocent Man" run the gamut from the Dion doo-wop of "The Longest Time" to the Four Seasons pop of "Uptown Girl." Joel is obviously having a blast on this material; rarely has he ever sounded this light-hearted or infectious. While that might have to do with his new love at the time, supermodel "Christy Lee" Brinkley happens to be the subject of much of the album, every song here has a great melody and catchy choruses abound. In his effort to make a tribute to the fifties (kind of the way he wanted to prove his edgier 80's style on "Glass Houses"), Joel crafted a classic on "An Innocent Man."

Cool 50's Tribute.......2006-10-26
This album is worth it as a whole because not only does it contain some of the best staples of solid American pop/rock, but it holds a wide variety of songs that are completely dazzling with originality and show that old fashions never truly go out of style. The weakest song may very well be "Keeping the Faith," but give it a chance. It's the least Fifties-sounding track on the collection, but it's definitely unique. I wouldn't consider this Joel's best, but it's highly listenable and contains great surprises, like "Christie Lee (love that song)."
(Oops, I guess I did lend you some personal opinions of mine. Do forgive me.)
Last words for those of you who shall skip to my point? It's probably worth your money if you are taking the time to read others' opinions on an album you are apparently curious about. After all, it is by Billy Joel, you know.

Well Crafted.......2007-03-22
One of UFO's best..........2006-07-05
On to the album. The Wild, The Willing and The Innocent is the best of the Paul Chapman era, and top 5 UFO - all time(Strangers, Obsession, Force It and Walk On Water). Chains Chains, TWTW&TI, Lonley Heart and Profession Of Violence are some of the best songs in UFO's immense catalog. There actually isn't a bad song on the album. The playing is excellent - Paul Chapman isn't Schenker, he doesn't have to be. His playing is very strong - maybe just not as explosive as Schenker. The only downside to this album is it only has 8 tracks - 9 with the live version of Hot 'n' Ready. This is an album that you listen to all the way through. Also worth checking out are: No Place To Run, Making Contact and the Mogg/Way albums Chocalate Box and Edge Of The World.
So in closing, if you are a UFO fan - BUY THIS ALBUM! UFO has been making great music for a long time, both with and without Michael Schenker. Don't let the "Schenkerphiles" stop you from checking out the rest of the work.
MAGICAL!.......2006-03-16
The Best of the Chapman era, nearly the best of them all.......2005-05-14
None of the songs are filler here, and I rarely use the "skip" button when playing it. I can't say the same for most of the discs in my collection. Personal favorites would have to be "Long Gone" featuring a moody, cool string section at the end, the chugging forceful riff of the title track and "Makin' Moves" and the balladic non-ballad "Lonely Heart."
The main attribute that has always set UFO apart from the pack and continues to make them great here is the sense of atmosphere that is created in each song. They know how to paint a vivid story with words and music, and it's always a unique experience if not always successful. If you're interested in checking out any UFO albums outside of the Schenker era, the one to begin with is right here!
4.5 stars - A severely underrated UFO release.......2005-05-13
Following the release of UFO's finest release, the 1978 live album Strangers In The Night, the group lost lead guitarist Michael Schenker, who went onto form his own group. To replace the recently-departed virtuoso, the group recruited Paul Chapman. The group's first effort with Chapman, 1980's No Place To Run, was an excellent album - so excellent, it was even comparable to the Schenker albums! Unfortunately, many UFO fans were Schenker loyalists, and so they didn't give the new release/gutarist a chance. Because of this whole "Schenker loyalist" things, it seems like only a few UFO fans give the rest of the band's catalogue a fair shake. How does Chapman's second release with UFO, 1981's The Wild, The Willing, And The Innocent, measure up? Read on for my review.
The story here is the same story as with No Place To Run - we have a damn good album (one that is comparable with even the Schenker albums), but not enough people give it a chance just because it doesn't have Schenker on it. I'm so damn sick of these Schenker fans who just go and diss all the releases that don't have him - There was life AFTER him in UFO! And this is one of the group's best, not to mention most underrated releases. The album is widely varied, and Paul Chapman proves himself to be one hell of a guitarist through and through (the band wouldn't have recruited him if they didn't think he was good!) There is no shortage of excellent songs on this album. The opener, Chains Chains, is classic hard rock the way it was meant to be enjoyed, and it makes for a great opening track. The title track is also great, featuring Chapman serving up some of his finest riffs. My favorite track on the album would have to be It's Killing Me, a classic bluesy power rocker that is distinctly British rock. The song is actually reminiscent of Rainbow's Stone Cold, and that's a good thing. Also excellent is the band's proto-power ballad, Lonely Heart. Long before power ballads became cheesy and overdone to death later in the eighties, UFO managed to create tracks that were half rocker and half ballad - and all excellent. Couldn't Get It Right is one of the pop-oriented hard rockers, which actually brings back memories of some of the lighter tunes from the Schenker era, making it one of my favorites here. Closing out the tune is the softest ballad of all, Profession Of Violence. This ballad combines piano usage with orchestral backing arrangements. About halfway through, Chapman and the rest of the band join in, adding that signature classic UFO sound to the ballad, making it a damn good closing track, and a great way to go out. In the end, this stands as one of my favorite UFO albums.
Sadly, UFO's albums are NOT readily available in America. This blows, since so many of them are so good! If you want them, more likely than not, it's gonna take some heavy searching, or a visit to an online store. There are three main versions of this and most UFO albums available - The version with a bonus track, the British twofer, or the Russian twofer. The British twofer is my first choice for which version you should buy and the Russian second, but if you can't find either, there's no harm in getting the onefer with the lone bonus tracks. Either way, the album itself is still excellent.
In the end, this stands as one of UFO's best and most underrated albums. It's really a shame the way Schenker loyalists put down the non-Schenker albums, since they're, in many cases, just as good and sometimes better than those old glory days of the band. If you're new to the band, though, start with the Schenker albums. Although the Chapman albums are often as good and sometimes better, they are a bit more of an aquired taste than the Schenker ones, which any hard rock fan can get into almost instantly. If you're a tried and true UFO fan, though, go for the Chapman stuff - and don't overlook this album.

Now, to the review:
Is it the sex pistols? no. ramones? no. dead kennedys? no. But is it punk: Yes. Ever heard of the descendents? They rocked, and were possibly one of the most influential punk bands ever. If I had to compare this album to someone, it would be the descendents. While this album may, at some points, seem to venture into pop-punk, it's some of the best pop-punk yet.
Sure, the recording quality sucks, but that just adds to the awesome feel of this album. The band occassionaly messes up vocally and instrumentally, which makes the album feel very natural. Plus, blink had their own identity at this point, so they weren't exactly like every punk band out there. The songs move along at an awesome pace, with very little space between each track.
However, the album could have been a bit more agressive. It seemed like their singing was kinda held back at some points. Some songs could've gone faster, too. But, all in all, it's a good punk album.

With her piano style steeped in the soul of New Orleans, Ball and coproducer Doyle Bramhall enlist the Cajun accordion of Pat Breaux and the bluesy Texas bite of Pat Boyack's guitar and Gary Primich's harmonica on a collection that holds its own with the classics that inspired her. Highlights range from a duet with Delbert McClinton on Allen Toussaint's "You Make It Hard" to the supper-club sophistication of "She's So Innocent" to the album-closing homage to Huey "Piano" Smith, "You Make Me Happy." Though uptempo rhythm & blues dominates the selection, the open-hearted balladry of "Let the Tears Roll Down" and "I Have a Right to Know" brings out the best in Ball. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
Marcia as good as ever.......2004-05-15
The songs are mainly original (often written by Marcia) but also include covers of You make it good (a cover of an Allen Toussaint song featuring Delbert McClinton as duet vocalist), I have the right to know (originally written and recorded by Brenda Burns and also covered by Francine Reed) and I'm coming down with the blues (a Don Covay song from 1960).
Among the original songs, I particularly like Louella (on which Marcia makes more use of her piano than usual for this album), Thibodaux Louisiana (with a touch of Cajun). She's so innocent (an outstanding ballad) and You make me happy (a great song to close the album) - but every song here is brilliant.
If you like great rock music with a variety of other influences, this is for you.
Strong material, variable production.......2002-05-29
The highlight of the album is "She's So Innocent", a kind of album sub-title, a mello and sombre ballad beautifully rendered by Marcia. This is the quietest slow number here and the most impressive. "I Have The Right To Know" is reminiscent of the best of Percy Sledge, with a dash of Domino (as in Fats). Like many of the selections, however, it runs about one minute too long. The Don Covay co-composition "I'm Coming Down With The Blues" is a great addition. It's a lesser-known slow number and it's soulful throughout.
The best uptempo item is "Fly On The Wall", actually a mid-tempo. The arrangement is perfect with backing vocals well mixed. A contender is the Ball composition "Louella", somewhat reminiscent of Frankie Ford's "Roberta" [aka "Loberta"], a fun lyric about some chick's penchant for making private business public. Must make a nice *set* entry.
"Count The Days" has an entertaining hook, but the arrangement is third-rate. With lyrics presumeably derived from the Presley-related "Milcow Blues Boogie" and a chorus possibly based upon The Beatles "All Together Now" you'd think this track would cook, but the mindless repetition of "...one, two, three..." and the length of the tune leaves one perplexed by a poorly integrated novelty effect. Maybe a fun after hours sing-along but not a number to hold the third position on an album by an esteemed artist.
The CD closes with Marcia's "You Make Me So Happy", an engaging track which directs you right back to Track One. Perhaps by leaving off a few numbers and simplifying a few more the album would really cook. Still a notable effort.

Innocent, smooth affairs........2007-05-03
Marilyn's songwriting is tight and compelling with her vocals enjoying the spotlight as her talents are well exposed through vibrant production here.
Ms. Scott is one of the West Coast's finest Soul/Jazz chanteuse.
I have to admit that she is extremely attractive...as well.
This selection of standards sees her on jazzier territory, that will appeal to fans of Diana Krall.
Engaging takes of "Round Midnight" and the ballad "Spring Can Really Hang You Out The Most" underline just how fine a singer Marilyn is.
The album is produced as always by the genius George Duke and features the man himself on piano, Ray Fuller on guitar, Brian Bromberg and Jimmy Haslip on bass, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Lenny Castro on percussion.
Special guest Patrice Rushen on piano.
"Icebox", "A Flame" and "A Change" are smoother affairs with gentle lilting grooves.
She has been around forever and I just love the classic songs she sings and her soulful style.
Enjoy !

Modern Vocal Jazz at its Best.......2006-08-16
Her new CD, Innocent of Nothing, includes two standards--Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight" placed in a somewhat overdramatic setting, and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," given a beautifully dynamic reading. Seven of the album's ten tracks were co-written by Scott herself--the leadoff "Round and Round," written with YJ pianist Russ Ferrante, is a standout. "Icebox," a collaboration with Ferrante and bassman Jimmy Haslip, has that contemporary funk that characterizes much of the Yellowjackets' songbook. In "The Wilderness," the singer/lyricist dreams of getting away from the city, and on "A Change," she and producer George Duke hope for better days to come.
You might not think of Bob Dylan as a jazz composer, but "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" works surprisingly well in this Jacket-like arrangement--it doesn't swing, but it grooves along on a pianistic bed complemented by tasteful electric guitar and soprano sax. And, considering the current state of the union, there is extra poignancy in her delivery of the line, "Even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked."
Though Scott's music wouldn't be considered "timeless," Innocent of Nothing presents an attractive singer with an attractive voice in a pleasant, relaxing and enjoyable setting. There's nothing wrong with that!

A subjective review for the uninitiated.......2006-08-04
This c.d. is somewhat of a polyglot of styles, but with primarily "cool jazz" instrumentation. There are 7 originals and 3 covers.
I'm not one who is necessarily predisposed towards covers. In recent times I have given enthusiastic reviews to c.d.'s by Rene Marie, Erin Bode and Jackie Allen, and my enthusiasm has been aimed as much at the originals as the covers, if not more.
But here, I think clearly the best two cuts are the covers of Monk's "Round Midnight", arguably the finest original jazz ballad ever written, and Dylan's "It's Alright, Ma." "Midnight" has the most interesting instrumental arrangement on the disc, and "Ma" has all the power and anger of the Dylan original with the electric power of the band to boot. If the rest of this c.d. were as good as these two cuts, I'd give this 5 stars unhesitatingly. Ms. Scott has a most worthy voice for jazz, a strong straight tone with very little vibrato, and she sings with admirable expression.
But, my subjective opinion--and it is truly subjective, I'll admit--is that the originals here don't measure up to the covers. "Moods" (track 5), which has the "Innocent of Nothing" line, is probably the best of the originals, and "Icebox" (track 3) isn't bad; but they don't move me like the two aforementioned covers.
Apparently, this c.d. has hit enough cross-over markets that it's selling pretty well. Hurrah. I'm solidly in favor of jazz musicians selling a lot of c.d.'s. But if I knew then what I know now, I would have waited until this one hits the bargain bin before purchasing. And I'd take the one reviewer below's word, that this is not the best of Ms. Scott's c.d.'s, on faith. RC
