The prolific veteran continues to cover a lot of musical territory on an album that resonates with the sound of his glory years of the mid-to-late 1970s. On the first two songs, Parker recalls his breakthrough with Dylanesque phrasing on "I Discovered America" before flashing forward to the current state of British pop celebrity on "England's Greatest Clown." There's his trademark sardonicism in the socially-conscious singalongs of "Ambiguous" and "Stick to the Plan," while other highlights include songs of resilience ("Suspension Bridge," "Hard Side of the Rain") and redemption ("Somebody Saved Me"). At almost eight-and-a-half minutes, "The Other Side of the Reservoir" is epic by Parker's standards, as he follows Van Morrison into the mystic. The closing "All Being Well" could pass as a traditional Irish benediction. With arrangements largely built around Parker's acoustic guitar, the predominantly midtempo material doesn't rock as hard as Parker has, but the hooks sink deep into the soul. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Absolutely beautiful music........2006-07-18
On this album, Crosby & Nash prove that they can make a wonderful album without Stills and Young. Nash's poppier numbers perfectly counterbalance Crosby's more cerebral trips. The harmonies are solid as a rock, and the two often overdub themselves numerous times to produce a vocal blend that just might be tighter than CS&N. Instrumental backing by various members of the Grateful Dead is complementary but never flashy or intrusive.
It's arguable that this album isn't as varied as Deja Vu, but it highlights Crosby and Nash at their respective strengths. While it might be difficult to find on CD, this album is well worth seeking out for fans of CS&N and CSN&Y.

After finding fame with the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, expatriate Englishman turned West Coast rock icon Graham Nash made an auspicious solo debut on this 1971 disc. It's an exemplary singer-songwriter effort, striking a vital balance between graceful introspection and political fervor, with an organic intensity that Nash would never quite match in his subsequent solo work. With assistance from the likes of David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, and Dave Mason, highlights include the sensitive internal explorations "I Used to Be a King" and "Man in the Mirror" and the impassioned protest anthems "Chicago" and "Military Madness." --Scott SchinderCustomer Reviews:
Astonishing.......2007-05-26
This is one of the four solo albums produced by the individual parts of CSNY on the heels of the release of Deja Vu, and with the exception of Neil Young's spectacular After The Goldrush it might be the best of them.
Rich with CSNY harmonies and the clear backing vocals and instrumentals of Crosby, Young and Garcia this is a standout release that showed Nash could indeed make it on his own, with a little help from his friends.
What is amazing that he was never again able to harness this level of creativity or originality again in his solo work. But this appears to be the hallmark of Nash. He had other pursuits to follow, including art, photography and Joni Mitchell.
Buy this album for a glimpse at what could have been a truly remarkable songwriting career if he had been able to repeat the magic heard here.
hard not to love!.......2007-04-23
"Military Madness" almost kicks your teeth in with melancholy. It's the "hardest" "rocker" on the album, despite the fact that it really is neither. It is probably the best track on the album. That being said, the rest of the album is still well worth a listen!
"Better Days" is a middle of the road rock song with a plodding pace that really keeps the album on a darker path. And yes, Graham hits those high notes (he pounds those high notes) like you wouldn't believe.
"Wounded Bird" is a song that I usually skip over. It's not bad, but it's not as exciting as the previous songs. But it's also short, so it doesn't detract a whole lot from the album's flow.
"I Used To Be A King" is a good song, still in the melancholy vein, but with the usual twist of hope that Graham offers. This song suffers a bit from weak lyrics on the verses, but is made up plenty by the vocal virtuosity that Graham displays.
"Be Yourself" is a song that I used to hate because the choruses (which consist of "be yourself" sung over and over) sounded so cheesy. But when you consider that at the time this wasn't as cliched a subject as it is now in popular music, it's easier to swallow. And the verses are pretty thought-provoking, actually.
"Simple Man" is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It's a love song with some depth. What I like most about it is the vocal harmonies on the chorus. Unfortunately this song is only around two minutes long--I wish it were longer!
"Man In The Mirror" is another standout track on the album. Great, introspective lyrics, and wonderful melodies. I would rate this the second best track on the album, right behind "Military Madness."
"There's Only One"--a song I usually skip over. What's strange though is that even though I don't like the song, it gets stuck in my head all the time. I think this is a great indication of Graham's ability to write super-catchy songs. So, I don't like it, but apparently my sub-conscious (or whatever) does.
"Sleep Song" is a pretty little acoustic number with more tight vocal harmonies. Not as good as "Simple Man", but it serves as a good mood setter for the last songs.
"Chicago" rips you out of the dreamy "Sleep Song" and shoves a decision in your face: won't you please come to Chicago? Even for those such as I who have no connection whatsoever to the political climate of the 70s can understand Graham's rallying cry: WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD! The chorus reprises for "We Can Change the World." A great end to a great album.
I would suggest that anyone who likes soft rock, thoughtful lyrics, excellent harmonies, and moving melodies get this album. It's a wonderful album that I could play over and over again.

This lovely CD features Renée Fleming singing religious music in an unaffected, lovely manner. Many favorites are here: both the Bach/Gounod and Schubert versions of "Ave Maria," each offered with long breaths and soft tone; "Rejoice Greatly" from Messiah, delivered with virtuosity and gleaming sound, and "He Shall Feed His Flock," also from Messiah, sung in a smooth, laid-back manner. Bits of the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc Gloria are welcome, as is the gorgeous "L'Adieu des Bergers" from L'Enfance du Christ. In the prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel, Fleming is joined by the splendid Susan Graham, and a version of "Amazing Grace" features Mark O'Connor on violin. Two excerpts from Mozart's Mass in C Minor, pieces by Reger and Franck, and a few surprises round out this devotional CD. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

Squeezing Out Sparks was not only Parker's finest moment, but it still stands up today as one of rock's best albums. When it was first released in 1979, Arista simultaneously issued Live Sparks, a collection of live radiocasts that featured the same 10 songs in the same order plus the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" and Parker's kiss-off to his former label, "Mercury Poisoning." The latter package was made available only to radio stations and critics, but it was a riveting live record worth all of the $40 it commanded on the collectors' market. Now Arista has reissued the 10 studio tracks and the dozen live tracks on an invaluable single CD. Included are two versions each of rock's best pro-choice abortion song ("You Can't Be Too Strong") and best Hiroshima song ("Discovering Japan"). --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Still sounds great.......2007-01-10
a forgotten album that needs a wider audience.......2006-08-29
The singing is out front, the lyrics have meaning and sometimes, are effectively seething, and he is backed by a crack band. The guitar player employs the same tone throughout all of the songs which I like since the guitar becomes a vry recognizeable voice. The drumming is very simplistic and tribal and definitely enhances the songs. The production results in a pronounced spacing between the instruments. The musicianship is very good.
This is a great album so every song is excellent. There is no filler, no weak tune, no song is superior to the other.
I personally like "Local Girls" b/c it was released as a single in Chicago where I was first introduced to the album. "Discoverying Japan" "Can't be too Strong" "Nobody Loves You" and "Love gets you Twisted" are my preferences.
If this would have been release 3 years pre or post -punk and new wave, it would have reached a wider audience.
You will never know about this excellent album from radio airplay or publicity. This will always be a word of mouth artist. Its a shame b/c he was like a Brittish Springsteen/Mellencamp
You Can't Be Too Strong.......2006-05-20
That aside, this is a legendary album that everyone should own. And with the Live Sparks promo added as a bonus, it's indispensible.

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.
With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

Album Description
Born in 1974, British tenor Russell Watson became an opera singer by freak occurrence. While he was regularly singing in bars and clubs in the Manchester and London suburbs, an owner of one such venue told Watson that he thought his voice was better suited for opera and requested that he learn Puccini's 'Nessum Dorma', which he did and promptly added to his set. Watson eventually signed with Decca Records, issuing his debut, entitled The Voice, in April of 2001. Nicknamed 'the People's Tenor', Watson seems poised to convert more than a few opera naysayers as he covers such contemporary compositions as Freddie Mercury's 'Barcelona', in addition to the standards. Includes the 2 bonus tracks 'I Have Nothing' & 'Can't Help Falling In Love'. 2006.Album Details

Since its debut in 1981, London's and the world's longest-running musical still fills seats in a dozen theaters worldwide. Uncountable recastings and reorchestrations later, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats strives to please the ears of ever-new generations. This is the original cast recording, and it retains a freshness from the still-recent opening, its novelty untarnished by decades of success. Also, the abundance of "names"--both singers and musicians--makes this one of the high-class musical recordings of all time. Elaine Paige rose to stardom as Grizabella with the hit "Memory"; at the time, though, bigger names were Wayne Sleep, Paul Nicholas, and Brian Blessed. Sarah Brightman and Bonnie Langford are also on the cast list. Lloyd Webber himself plays keyboards and the impressive roster of session musicians includes Barbara Thompson and David Locke. Lloyd Webber, well versed in the practice of "auto-quotation," can always look back to this work for cat-chy material: the Overture, "Old Gumbie Cat," "Rum Tum Tugger," and "Mr. Mistoffelees"--the list of good tunes and themes goes on and on. This remains a fun listening experience, even for those few who still haven't caught the show. It's also available in a highlights version. --Yngvil V.G.Album Details

Enough of this Broadway vs London stuff. Let's add Australia to the picture.......2006-07-02
Overture - The overture is pretty much the same
Jellicle Song for Jellicle Cats - London
Naming of Cats - Australia
Invitation to the Jellicle Ball - Broadway
Old Gumbie Cat - London but Australia's is pretty darn good
Rum Tum Tugger - I'm not very fond of London's version or Broadway's. I'd have to say Australia, but Broadway is just as good.
Grizabella - London
Bustopher Jones - London
Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer - Australia. This version has a very interesting Mungo and Rumpel
Old Deuteronomy - London or Broadway
Jellicle Ball - London
Grizabella: The Glamour Cat - Tie
Memory - Okay, Elaine Paige is about as good as it gets. But Debbie Byrne from Australia delivers a heart felt Memory also.
Gus: The Theatre Cat - Australia
Growltiger's Last Stand/The Ballad of Billy McCaw - All are good
Macavity: The Mystery Cat - Australia
Mr. Mistoffelees - Australia. The Australian Rum Tum Tugger is a lot better. And while I'm a huge Sarah Brightman fan, and you can hear her overpowering in this song, I still say Australia wins here.
Memory - Moment of truth. I love Elaine Paige. Her Memory is as good as it gets. However, some would say that Elaine's version is too soft and sweet, and isn't bitter and cold enough. This song could go both ways. Betty Buckley certainly expressed rage and power in this song, but maybe too much. In my personal opinon, Elaine's version is too soft, and Buckley's version is too cold. Debbie Byrne is a perfect medium, and she expresses remorse, sorrow, pain, anger, and loneliness in perfect harmony. I'd have to say Australia.
Journey to the Heaviside Layer - Not much of a difference. Tie between all three.
Ad-Dressing of Cats - Broadway. THANK GOD FOR KEN PAGE.

Lyric mezzo-soprano Susan Graham stands out from the crowd for her expressive, opulent voice and communicative gifts. Someone at Sony has made the decision to place her in the public mind primarily as a singer of French works, and although it would be a shame to see her limited to that area of the repertoire, she does sing the French repertoire exceptionally. Graham sings sensitively and idiomatically in this group of 24 songs by Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947), a Venezuelan-born, French-reared composer and conductor who knew how to craft a song like few others. In such lovely songs as "A Chloris," which opens the album, and "Je me souviens," Hahn creates a bevy of beautiful little worlds, which Graham and the outstanding pianist Roger Vignoles present in memorable form. This album belongs in the collection of all lovers of song. --Sarah Bryan MillerCustomer Reviews:

Excellent Catalyst for Seduction. Buy It........2006-05-19
The songs are so gentle and so seductive that they are as likely to set the tone for the seducer as well as for the seductee. Even if you are not in a seductive situation, the songs will make you want to be there.
All this means is that while Reynaldo Hahn does not have the great reputation of Berlioz or Shubert or Schuman or Debussy, you really should know his songs, and Ms. Graham does a great interpretation to make this introduction.
Graham's Artistry Makes for Compelling Listening in a Collection of Songs from a 'Minor' Composer.......2006-02-27
I know the songs of Reynaldo Hahn from a number of worthy recordings from other artists -- Rachel Yakar, Martyn Hill, Bruno Laplante, Mady Mespl?, Graham Johnson & Co. (the Hyperion French Song Edition), one-offs on Elly Ameling albums, not to mention vintage recordings by Hahn himself. All the same, this recording was a complete revelation. Her beauty of tone, her ease with the French language (surpassing, I daresay, the much-vaunted Francophony of Felicity Lott), her canny selection of songs, Vignoles's sensitive accompaniment, they all add up. But there's that (ahem) je-ne-sais-quoi that makes something a classic, and this album has it. It captures an era, it creates a time and place that come wafting out of your speakers.
My favorite song on this record is "Si la nuit n'est pas ?toil?e" -- it is a rapturous melody to a quintessential Victor Hugo text. But there is nary a false note on the entire album. I do recommend, if you can find it, the Ameling album "Serenata," which includes two Hahn songs I haven't encountered elsewhere, "L'amiti?" with its faint melancholy and "La vie est belle" with its French ?lan.
As we know, Graham has gone on to much bigger things, but she retains her commitment to the art of song and to breathing fresh life into French rarities (as in her delightful operetta album). In terms of tone, timbre, and intonation, for my money she has the most beautiful voice in opera today. My only hope is that she doesn't go the way of Ren?e Fleming and become The Voice Beautiful ... she veered a bit in that direction with her recent Chausson record, and I hope she gets back to business and gets her vivid personality back in action in her song performances.

A very good Hahn collection.......2004-12-05
Lover of Marcel Proust, sought-after musical entertainer in the salons of the Highest Society, diarist, composer, singer, renowned conductor, influential music writer in the most powerful daily in France (Le Figaro) finally General Manager of the Opéra Comique before dying of a brain tumor in 1947, Hahn was a multi-faceted musician of the highest probity. His songs are simple, patrician, utterly elegant, and always set to the best poetry. His simplicity and purity of means accomplish in little what many pretentious thunderers fail even to approximate.
Hahn himself had a light little baritone voice, a little croak of a voice, really, with which he became popular in high society drawing rooms before the First World War: a voice that charmed duchesses and made the most reserved princesses smile. He even made some 50 records between 1920 and 1930, which show his unique, expressive musicality, unfailing sense of phrasing, elegance of style, and fine piano-playing (He almost invariably accompanies himself.)
Hahn's own 78s, and a very few others by the likes of Ninon Vallin, give a clear recorded testimony of how his songs ought to be performed: simply, elegantly, with charm.
Graham is a lovely singer and a supple musician. Her French is not exactly top-notch but most people will not care: they will respond to her beautiful sound and endearing manner. The pianist is also good.
