Epochs pass, musical trends come and go, but rock always seems to return to its two most primal building blocks: a compelling voice and driving guitar. Cut through the critical rhetoric comparing Haven singer Gary Briggs's emotive style to the late Jeff Buckley, and it's hard to miss the mesmerizing, trans-generational guitar work of Nat Watson. Consider that their official bio has Watson and Briggs meeting in a hometown Cornwall, England, record store as they quibbled over a copy of Quicksilver Messenger Service's Happy Trails, and it's assumed their roots go a little deeper than the vaunted sounds of Manchester, where Haven shrewdly relocated in '99. Midwifed by former Smith's manager Joe Moss and that band's legendary guitarist Johnny Marr (who produced this sparkling debut), the band quickly racked up a string of promising U.K. singles, some of which (like "Beautiful Thing" and "Let It Live" included here) recall the original drama and power of U2's Boy and October wed to a sonic ethos that imagines Radiohead as a little less coy about their pop fetishes. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A quite enjoyable album.......2006-12-10
The first time I had ever had of Haven was hearing the wonderful "Let it Live" on satellite radio. I decided to check them out further. I must say that I wasn't dissapointed. And though this album will never reach "classic" status by any means, this album is definitely worth listening to. The musicianship is great, the songs contain good melodies and catchy hooks, and the vocals are decent as well. If you're a fan of other Brit-Pop bands, you should enjoy this album. However I feel that Haven do bring something a bit different to the table. I'm really sure that I can give an accurate comparision to another band as far as sound goes. Maybe a bit more heavy Coldplay with a sprinkle of early Radiohead, with Jeff Buckley vocals.
Impressively Boring.......2005-05-11
I've owned this album for a few years and I've finally decided to sell it and just purchase the "Say Something" single. Aside from that track there really isn't any benefit to buying the album. "Lately" is also a pretty good song but the problem with most of these tracks is the singer. He's just too good! The lyrics and the music just don't do his voice justice. I get really frustrated listening to this album because I expect a great ballad to flow from his voice yet it never does. The harder songs on this album definitely don't fit with his soft singing style either. Don't buy this album based on the 3 good songs you hear, though there probably aren't that many.
sad troubadours.......2004-04-21
Haven are the latest guitar based band coming out of Manchester. This first album was produced by Johnny Marr who seems to be everywhere nowadays. They have created a local following over the past four years. They are band that may seem as much like Starsailor as they do Oasis and Jeff Buckley. Supposedly this band met in Cornwall and then jumped ship to Manchester once they played a few shows and got noticed. They were recently in the United States but through an error on my part I missed the show. Even if you doubt their brand of emotional rock, you have to admit that Gary Briggs has a great voice and Nat Wason's guitar riffs are brilliant. There's been a lot of sour faced music from Manchester, and it's great that's there has been a turn fro life-affirming rock.
"Beautiful Thing" is a good indication of Haven's sound. It's like The Smiths meets Nirvana but with a sweet voice floating over the wreckage. They have some ballads which can be moving at times such as "Where Is The Love" and "Say Something" which soars over the sonic landscape like the great anthems of old. Nat Wason's guitar playing and sounds evoke and create moods. They signal emotions to break out. "I Need Someone" captures the great straight ahead rock of a band like Oasis. They also employ acoustic guitars on occasion, as on "Is This Bliss" and "Keep Giving In." But Haven will probably get noticed soon enough for their atmospheric rock of songs like "Let It Live" where Johnny Marr seems like he has joined them on-stage. The endpiece is the Doves-like "Holding On." Maybe if Doves weren't around, more attention would come Haven's way. But still they are a new band. They have years ahead of them to deliver their Pet Sounds. How soon is now?

Wonderful blend of styles - I await a US tour.......2003-06-03
Haven are more accessible than Radiohead, more upbeat and driving than Travis, and more melodic than Coldplay. I think this is a stellar release - every song is a gem.
good and overlooked.......2003-01-08
This good and overlooked band has much of the reminents of other UK bands that it follows, with such similar ounds of early U2, radiohead and Buckley. It's good album. If anything a bit slow and awkward in the begininning, to the point that it is hard to connect or really get into the music. But don't throw it out of your player yet. "say Something" is ultimately beautiful, along with songs like "Sleep" and "Outside" that just simply sound cool. A lot of intricate guitar work make this record seem easier and more hip to listen to.
The basic truth is that, if you are into other UK bands like Starsailor and Coldplay that have gotten some or great recognition, then there is a good chance that you will find a home with this one. There might not be anything revolutionary here, but that does not demolish the fact that this is a solid debut, from a band that has promise.

Smitten.......2002-08-06
This British foursome has the imprimatur of none other than ex-Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr, who produced their impressive debut Between the Senses. Vocalist Gary Briggs sounds like Mark Hollis (ex-Talk Talk) channeling Jeff Buckley. The band - guitarist Nat Wason, bassist Iwan Gronow, drummer Jack Mitchell - anchors Briggs' emotional croon with a dreamier version of contemporary English rock (Starsailor, Coldplay, Travis). Songs do stand out. "Say Something" and "Til the End" are radio-ready alt-anthems, "Still Tonight" yearns like prime Raspberries, "I Need Someone" sports a classic-rock riff that wouldn't be out of place on a summer single. Mostly, though, Haven offer an atmosphere of doe-eyed longing. Every one of these twelve songs is about love - finding it, holding on to it, letting it go. If I was a 16-year-old alt-thinking music fan I'd be obsessing. As it stands, at 40, I'm merely smitten.
Derivative originality.......2002-04-26
The snarky Brit critics say these guys are nothing but a bunch of shallow Radiohead imitators. Not quite. Yes, there is the chorus of anthemic guitars neatly covering over pinched-voice vocals (but not wimpy a la Coldplay). But the structure, texture and bridging of the songs is top-notch. Actually, if you can picture Radiohead with some Gin Blossoms mixed in, you get a good idea of what their sound is. Okay, so Still Tonight could have been stolen from a Cheap Trick ballad, but you still find yourself singing along to it. And songs like Til The End, Beautiful Thing and Where Is The Love are all strong rock 'n' roll songs. Say Something is Top 10 in Britain. These days, you feel lucky if you get an album with three songs you like on it. This one, for me, has eight. So it's 20 bucks. Well worth it. Just wait until US Alternative Radio discovers these guys.
Very good stuff.......2002-03-09
I've read a few reviews of this CD that dismiss it as boring or unoriginal. While it certainly doesn't break new ground stylistically, in my opinion it is a very strong album. I'd definitly say that it was the best release of the year so far, except for the fact that Electric Soft Parade's "Holes In The Wall", which came out on the same day, is also so wonderful. The thing that jumps out almost immediatly in the first couple of listens is that there are four completely classic and incredible songs here, namely "Beautiful Thing", "Say Something", "Out Of Reach", and "Let It Live". However, after a few more listens, several of the other tracks, which at first seemed to pass by rather non-intrusively, have really grown on me as well. I really like the singing on "Lately". This is a very good album, highly recommended for fans for British guitar bands.

Customer Reviews:
Haven is Heaven.......2002-04-04
I saw this band on a pre-tour show in Mancehster. They were well drilled and had some excellent musical talent. The album I feel is very well rounded, good solid lyrics, great songs such as "Say something" and for a first attempt, I think they pass in flying colors. I would highly recommend this for people who like bands such as Travis, Coldplay and Incubus. Great Album.
Coldplay/Buckley/Travis/Starsailor Version 2,342. And so on........2002-03-02
There were two things that suggested to me before I heard it that Between the Senses was going to be a good album. The first was that Haven had produced a wonderful single, Say Something, a song which deserves to become one of those summer singalong indie anthems. The second was that the album was going to be produced by legendary Smiths guitarist Jonny Marr.
Unfortunately, neither of these two facts can escape the fact that Haven are not out of the ballpark of Coldplay, Travis, or the remaining members of the acoustic guitars and falsetto bandwagon which in recent times has come to be seen, wrongly, as the only face of indie music. While on the strength of Say Something and Let It Live you might desire an album full of Say Somethings and Let it Lives, this is the problem with Between The Senses: it is all like the singles, except usually with less memorable tunes. Despite Marr's best efforts, Haven are reluctant to experiment and don't possess the kind of innovation that hallmarks the best indie. 2 stars.
You've Heard This All Before!.......2002-02-26
This group sort of arrived on the scene with a fine pedigree behind them. They seemed to be the protégé's of ex Smith guitarist Johnny Marr, who also produces the album. They were also heralded as another group from the endless conveyor belt that is the Manchester rock scene(Smiths,New Order,Oasis,Verve,Elbow,Stone Roses and lately Starsailor,to name but a few). They received plenty of hype from the British music press-so you could say I was looking forward to hearing this debut album. After listening to it a good few times my overall feeling is that this c.d. leaves my musical "senses" rather cold.Maybe it's because they are just a bad imitation of so many other British bands that are currently doing well. They sound so much like Coldplay it's almost unreal.Once again we have another British rock band who seem to pride themselves on being extra sensitive souls and to be honest this is all getting a bit boring at this stage. The lead singer is a real sucker for the half rock vocalist-half falsetto guru-yet he really falls between the 2 stools and doesn't really achieve any true style of his own.I'm a real sucker for lead vocalists and I'm afraid to say that if I don't like the vocalist it tends to over-ride my thoughts on the album as a whole. The album starts off brightly enough-the first 6 tracks are quite good. The first one is pretty quiet and features a pretty cool guitar riff.Once the rhythm guitar kicks in you immediately see how this sounds like Coldplay meets Muse(vocal style definitely borrowed from Muse!).It has it's loud moments too, which becomes fairly rare as the album progresses. The 3rd track is by far the best and has received reasonable airplay over here, especially as it's a single.Despite the fact that the opening bars from the guitar are pure Coldplay-it's a pretty gorgeous riff and the hook in the chorus is excellent.Track 4 is a slower yet pretty loud affair when the chorus kicks in.It has lots and lots of multi-layered guitars and shows that at least the group are talented musically speaking-if only they had better material to work with.Track 5 has a real lazy style to it and it's vocalist Gary Briggs finest moment on the album-he delivers a pretty belting falsetto on this track.Track 6 has one notable difference-it features some excellent harmonies in the vocals-it also drifts from loud to soft quite nicely and is probably the 2nd best track on the c.d.-oh yeah the drum roll is pretty cool too!The trouble with the latter tracks is that after a while the whole album begins to sound all the same. It's hard to differentiate one track from the other. No track really stands out and by the time you reach track 7 the whole album seemed to serve as background music-no riff,no catchy chorus,no nice hooks could arouse my interest in the album once again. So it's not a bad c.d.-it just lacks any originality.I don't think there are enough special songs on this c.d. that will keep me coming back to it quite often!
