When listening to the Shaggs (the Wiggin sisters--Dorothy on lead guitar and vocals, Betty on rhythm guitar and vocals, Helen on drums), one needs to jettison conventional notions of song structure, what is "in tune" or not, even what constitutes suitable subject matter for a pop song ("My Pal Foot Foot," "Who Are Parents?"). Originally issued on a small, dodgy label in 1969, the guileless sounds of Philosophy cast a long shadow nonetheless; the group was one of Frank Zappa's favorites and their music inspired rock primitivists Beat Happening as well as sublime archivists NRBQ and Yo La Tengo. On Philosophy, the teenaged sisters' delirious, playfully constructed music has everything you least expect: loopy polyrhythms that follow no external law, off-kilter singing conducted in unison that sounds like the hit parade broadcast from Jupiter, and bizarre, elementary-school guitar playing. Best enjoyed in small doses, this enchanting, accidental music approximates the highly personal charms of so-called "outsider" visual art. To paraphrase a saccharine song of yore, the Shaggs' music is very beautiful--in its own way. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Things I wonder.......2007-02-08

Cheers to the most discordant pop you'll ever listen to..."There are many things I wonder, There are many things I don't, It seems as though the things I wonder most, Are the things I never find out..." A group of sisters that performed for only several years, almost exclusively in the local town hall and/or nursing home! Their father used his savings to record their album, and 900 of the original 1000 copies disappeared with the producer. Sets the stage for a strange and melancholy journey into family dynamics...

5 out of 5 stars My Mind Reels.......2007-01-27

the only way to describe this is the feeling you get after you just got hit in the head and you don't know what is going, the vast confusion perfectly descibes this. listen to a sample and everything you know about music and have learned in put in a garbage disposal and mixed up till you don't remember what music is for the time being. this is also probably the most surreal thing ive ever listened to also. its actually very creepy if you look at the right way. my feelings for this 'album' are somewhat confusing also, first i find it absurd and hilarious that some people think it is 'beautiful' and it goes to show that there is someone to defend everything, then on the other hand i feel like it takes a very very strange group to come up with this and i don't think ive ever heard anything quite like it. it's like their father played music all the time till they were 3, then locked them in a cave for about 14 years then stuck them in a recording studio and asked them to play from memory. its like that. my mind still feels likes its going to explode everytime i hear this because this is actual ANTI music, when asked to rate this i couldn't possibly. my real question is is how did these girls get to record this? how did someone press this to vinyl with a straight face? who heard this in the recording studio and though, OH YEAH this will be a a top ten hit. Then again this was the 60s, which brings me to another point, the only way you could of released this and the only way you could of listened and enjoyed this is through drug use.

4 out of 5 stars I like it.......2007-01-23

An interesting album, though it's probably best in small doses. Certainly a one-of-a-kind thing. Although to some extent it does just sound like some kids banging out music, for brief moments everything comes together and it sounds catchy and oftentimes remarkably like music years ahead of it's time. At many moments the instrumental aspect sounds almost exactly like some basic form of punk music. Worth a listen.

1 out of 5 stars It is truly bad.......2007-01-10

It is really painful to listen to, if you have any ear for music whatsoever. It's also interesting, it's hard to believe anyone could be this bad. I've only ever listened to it once, all the way through, and that was pretty difficult, but it has a place in my car, in case I'm falling asleep at the wheel and I don't have time to pull over for a nap. There's no way anyone could fall asleep to this, let's see, do I want to call it, music? No, it is not really music in any real sense, these are disconnected, disjointed, dysharmonious, dysrhythmic sounds made with musical instruments. I recommend this cd to 1) people who have any doubt that it was the worst rock n roll album ever, hearing is truly believing 2) bartenders and bouncers who have to clear out large groups of people, and have access to a powerful sound system 3) music teachers, instructors who need to demonstrate the importance of professional music lessons, 4) collectors of the bad, the tasteless, the defective, and 5) free jazz and postmodern symphonic music fans (see if they can tell the difference).

3 out of 5 stars Drive By The Accident.......................2006-04-03

The real story behind The Shaggs was the father. What planet was he from? This was 1969 (The Who, The Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Woodstock etc.)how exactly did he think his "band" was going to make superstars of themselves. This whole story is a John Waters movie. It's strange, surreal, unbelievable, bizzare. How this even happened is beyond all conventional reality which is the most interesting thing about it. Is it listenable? No, it is absolutly atrocious but the fact that someone thought it was worth commiting to vinyl is more unbelievable than the music itself.

5 out of 5 stars I actually really like this.......2005-12-20

On a certain level, this music is laughably bad and thoroughly amaterish. However, I must admit, I actually like this record a lot. It's unlike anything else ever recorded. Nothing is in tune. The beats and rhythms are all over the place. The lyrics are very naive and childlike. However a certain sweetness and sincerety comes across. I also don't find it irritating the way I find a lot of commercial music. Is it any wonder that the Shaggs have been the object of cultish devotion for all these many years?

This is highly recommended for those who wish to hear something very different. If you must laugh *at* the Shaggs, and enjoy music that is so bad, it's good, well, this can have that sort of appeal, too. Also, you can share certain tracks with your parents (Who Are Parents) or your sweetheart (You're Something Special, My Companion) or even your pet (especially if he's named Foot Foot) to show them that you care. Basically what I am getting at is that the Shaggs can be enjoyed on a variety of levels. So, come and join the cult!

1 out of 5 stars Sound Clips Will Do.......2005-09-17

The hipsters can praise this all they want, but they KNOW it's crap and praising it just helps in their desperate desire to feel so smug and superior to mere mortals. I can guarantee you that few of them actually own a Shaggs album and of those that do few ever listen to it. This applied to Zappa too.

Sure, it has a sincerity missing in so much of today's music, but sincerity alone does not make music (and I use the term loosely) listenable. Intrigued by this band's story? That's understanding, it is a fascinating one. But if you still feel a need to hear this stuff save yourself a lot of dough and go with the sound clips. They'll tell you everything you need to know.

5 out of 5 stars Sickeningly Beautiful.......2005-08-29

I've never heard anything as compellingly naive. I keep coming back to this album, hearing it a different way each time. It's both shockingly avant-garde and pathetically folk-oriented. A classic (?) of its kind, better than The Residents, Frank Zappa, or any of those people who actually "try" to be outrageous and ingenious. Yes, I give it 5 stars, which really means nothing. The Shaggs are critic proof.

1 out of 5 stars the shaggs.......2004-12-13

This is like hearing children play music for the first time. This is talentless on many levels. waste your money if you must.

One common joke about the Shaggs is that it would be impossible to cover their songs note for missed note, each missed beat, as they embody the true definition of shambling pop. This late-'60s group, made up of three sisters (and fostered by their father, who was by some accounts a domineering Svengali), has been elevated to cult status over the years, heralded by the likes of Frank Zappa, Ira Kaplan, and John Zorn. Conventional notions of musicality aside, the Shaggs played with a childlike innocence and sort of sleepwalking confidence that--when not just silly--was captivating, enchantingly charming, and downright spiritual. Against all bets, here's a compilation from artists most qualified for the impossible task: Ida, whose members cultivate a Sergeant Pepper-era Beatles vibe on "Philosophy of the World"; avant-rocksters Thinking Fellers Union Local 242; Holland's minimalist-in-residence Joost Visser; home taper for life R. Stevie Moore; and naive wonder-Christians Danielson Famile. "My Pal Foot Foot," likely about an imaginary friend, is expertly warped even further by Deerhoof. You'll probably want to be acquainted with the Shaggs to appreciate this effort, but even if you aren't, chances are you'll seek out the originals after hearing this loving tribute. --Cyndi Elliott

    Album Description

A loving tribute to the infamous 60s girl group The Shaggs, considered to be the godmothers of Outsider Music.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Completely inessential.......2003-02-22

Tribute albums are pretty dodgey ventures normally, but covering the Shaggs? Why? I can only assume it's to get your name listed along with other cool folks. The Shaggs are an original and interesting for their music+performance+naivette. Having Pros "interpret" their work is just silly and the results speak for themselves. Not one track adds anything useful to "The Shaggs, Band and Legend."

4 out of 5 stars The Shaggs and Grease?.......2002-10-24

Just got this CD and was looking forward to hearing some of the Shaggs "reinterpreted"....hoping that the music was more listenable. It was more listenable but the irony is ...the new version is not as good.
I'll admit that the original Shaggs CD was perhaps the strangest gut wrenching funny music I've heard....ever. The original alblum was so bad that it demanded your attention, every off note and off beat would get me smiling... until my jaw hurt. But it was music that was difficult to listen to.
This new CD is a bunch easier to listen to, but I'm afraid it has lost the raw edge of the original. It's not that I don't like the "Better than the Beatles...A Tribute to the Shaggs," but the tribute reminds me of the movie and the soundtrack for Grease. I mean, that while Grease "is the word", it is not the real thing. While this tribute to the Shaggs is good, it's also a bit too easy and vanilla.
If you are a Shaggs fanatic this CD is worth getting. If not, you'll wonder about the ridiculous lyrics which don't make as much sense in the more polished versions from "..the Tribute."
In the origianl Shaggs , the media and the message matched...they were both terrible. In "the Tribute," the message is still bad, but the media(sound)is fairly good. A mismatch?
