Vanill Fudge Rocks Like it was 67.......2007-05-24
they are everything you could want in 60's Heavy Psychedelic Rock the way it should be "Live and Wild" the only thing I did not like was that they changed the order of the songs and I only knew that because of a bad cut which did not effect any of the song preformances. Tim and Carmine Still blow you away. Turn it Up and trip to the 60's.

Not-So-Good Album Cover, but GREAT songs!.......2007-06-15
We have a joke in Atlanta: "Didja hear about those two ***s that attacked that woman? One of 'em held her down, and the other one did her hair." As on all first five Judds' albums/CD's, Wynonna is...well, I can't be totally "disinterested" here, becaue I've had a crush on her since about '85 - but - ugh - Naomi looks like those ***s got to her. Regardless, "Rockin" is a fine, FINE bit of music: back when Don Potter was directly responsible for their sound, and before Naomi got sick. And it's been mentioned (a LOT) of places elsewhere, but about this time, I got fed up with what was considered "popular music," Rock And Roll having died with E in 1977. DREADFUL time, folks - but Country was going thru one of its all too rare renaisances, beautiful Women, and Men that didn't whine, like Dwight and Clint. And the seventh song on the album, "Cry Myself To Sleep," honest, was the VERY CATALYST that finally made me put down my treasured Presision Bass and pick up my ancient Epiphone-something acoustic. And I began frequenting "Open Mike" nights whereever, and was very gratified whenever I'd find a Lady who sing Wynonna's part, and let me sing Naomi and play my acoustic. Rambling, yes, but this album/CD - WOW: "Have Mercy" "Grandpa" "Workin In The Coal Mine" (God Bless Don Potter for the beautiful guitar he played for them!) - but as I said, "Cry Myself To Sleep" has since become one of my equals with treasures such as "Gimme Shelter," "Once Bitten Twice Shy," "In My Life," "Whiter Shade Of Pale," "Dock Of The Bay" - I guess you get the message. The ultimate compliment: "Rockin' With The Rhythm" is one of those all-too-rare CD's that you can put on and PLAY ALL THE WAY THRU without skipping over yucky tracks.
Awesome Judd music.......2006-08-21
As many people have already said, this is a great follow-up to the Why Not me cd. One of my all-time favorite Judd songs is Grandpa, Tell me bout the good ole days.(which is about Wynonna's grandpa) I think this really is a showcase of Wynonna's vocals and Naomi's accompanying harmony.
Judds Rhythm.......2005-08-13
I just love their music. This is a good CD to sing along, full blast. Love the CD.
Great follow-up to Why not me.......2004-02-22
The Judds became major country stars as a result of their previous album, Why not me, which yielded four number one country hits (although one of them had already appeared on their debut min-LP). So - how did they follow that? The answer is - with this album, which yielded a further four number one country hits. The overall sound is different with the backing music much more restrained. The result is a smoother but sparser album than Why not me. This album therefore relies much more heavily on the voices of Wynonna and Naomi, which are of course excellent. Of the two, I prefer Why not me but I can understand why a lot of people prefer this album. The songs are of an equal standard.
The four big hits here are the title track, Have mercy, Grandpa tell me about the good old days and Cry myself to sleep. You've probably heard most or all of these tracks but there is much to like about the other six tracks here. Those tracks include a cover of Allen Toussaint's Working in the coalmine (originally a pop hit for Lee Dorsey). If I were you, Tears for you, River roll on, I wish she wouldn't treat you that way and Dream chaser are all wonderful songs.
Traditional country fans looking for a relaxing album full of quality need look no further.
The Judds did it again!.......2003-03-20
It just seems the Judds are almost unstoppable. This is a good CD. Most people know and like the singles "Have Mercy", "Grandpa", and "Rockin' with the Rhythm", but this is one of those rare releases where almost ALL the songs are great. While "Cry Myself To Sleep" is, in my opinion, the best track here, "River Roll On" is just beautiful, and their cover of "Workin' in a Coal Mine" is quite fun and daring. "I Wish She Wouldn't Treat You That Way" is also a very fun song. If you like the Judds at all and don't have this release, you are missing one of their best works.

Amazon.com essential recording
There are several collections that cover the Isley Brothers' early years, but this is the one to own because it pulls tracks from several labels and mixes major hits and obscurities in an interesting way. Seminal cuts such as "Shout," the frantic "Nobody But Me," and "Twist and Shout" (later copied almost note for note by a little group in England called the Beatles) belong in every record collection. So do "Testify" (which contains the efforts of a young guitarist named Jimmy James, a.k.a. Jimi Hendrix), "Who's That Lady" (the prototype for the group's '70s smash "That Lady"), and some of the group's efforts from their Motown years, such as "This Old Heart of Mine" (later a hit duet for Ronald Isley and Rod Stewart) and "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)." --Daniel Durchholz

Happy Birthday Ronald"Mr.Biggs" Isley.......2005-05-22
longevity&Long term careers are often taken for granted. the Isley brothers have been around for so long it is truly incredible. they started out with some Hits&Various Labels until everything fully came into gear.it was cool to hear the ground level version of the Isley brothers.hearing Ronald Isley from the 50's onward is just amazing at how strong His voice has held&Been smooth. this is the start of One of the Greatest Rock bands Ever.
Now wait a minute!.......2004-03-08
This CD features Isley Brothers recordings from the years before they started their own record label, T-Neck Records. It spans ten years and seven record labels. The Isley Brothers had limited success during these years, which may explain why they changed record labels so often. But they still managed to record many great songs which have come to be regarded as classics. The best known songs are "Shout", "Twist and Shout" and "This Old Heart"; but all the songs are great. Even their cover version of "Rock Around the Clock" rocks! This is the definitive CD of the Isley Brothers early years.
OK, but..........1999-07-27
What happend to "Put a Little Love in Your Heart"? Damn it! Don't they always find a way to screw up these anthologies?
Shout, Twist and Shout, and This Old Heart of Mine on one CD.......1999-05-12
Rhino gathered up all the good Isley Brothers songs from their early career on one CD. (Good thing, too - I was despairing of ever finding Shout on a decent disk.) They bagged virtually every decent song the Isleys did over that period (including "Behind a Painted Smile," a major Motown UK hit, and "Who's That Lady," which they remade in the '70s with great results). Decent liner notes, fun photos (they were smoking cigarettes and performing simultaneously?). Good CD.

Stylistics always good.......2005-10-10
Not their overall best CD but ranks up there. First and second albums still rank at the top. My favorite here is "There's No Reason". I'm a hardcore Stylistics fan so they pretty much always deliver in my book. Classy act.
" A Timeless Classic ".......2005-07-24
This is, for me, their finest album/CD. Without question, it's a great collection of songs, from top to bottom-period. It also happens to be their last with the great Thom Bell and the late Linda Creed. My favorite songs on this CD are, " Could This Be The End " , " Make It Last " ,
" Pay Back Is A Dog " , and certainly, " You Make Me Feel Brand New " . I must say, I like most of their material, though nothing they did before or sense, quite measures up to this standard. The best they've ever done. Most worthy of five stars.
Perfection.......2005-06-04
Perfection is the only way to describe this album. Tracks 1-6 have been in my head since I was a kid listening to Pops blowing it through the sound system. Should've been 20x platinum.
MASTERPIECE OF SWEET SOUL MUSIC.......2001-09-08
The Stylistics is, maybe, the most original group of the seventies. Elegance and quality are characteristcs of these guys! This album hasn't just the mega-hit "You make me feel brand new", it has too "Pay back is a dog", "There's no reason", "Rockin'roll baby" and a team of songs that will make you dream!
I have the original vinil and hear it since the seventies! Who will replace The Stylistics nowadays?
Classic and Rare Stylistics...........2001-03-27
....Philly Soul at its best. My two cents is that the Stylistics will go down in history as the greatest vocal groups of its; generation. Why? Not just because of the classic "You Make Me Feel Brand New", but those jams like "Pay Back is a Dog" that means a great deal to those who grew up with them, but you cannot find or hear anywhere unless you buy the CD....

Album Description
Presented as another chapter in Varèse Vintage's ongoing celebration of Rock & Roll's First 50 Years, Good Rockin' Tonight is a unique collection from the vaults of King / Federal / Deluxe Records. This release traces the evolution of rock and roll from the early jump blues sounds of Wynonie Harris (whose #1 hit of 1948 was later revived by Elvis for Sun Records), Roy Brown and Bull Moose Jackson, to the mid 50s vocal groups like The Dominoes, The Midnighters and "5" Royales, to the early 60s.

The ongoing series in Varese Vintage releases "Good Rockin' Tonight:25 Essential Rock & Rhythm Classics", featuring some of the pioneer labels Federal, DeLuxe and King Records of early '40s, '50s and '60s Rock and Rhythm tunes ~ many were at the top of the charts during those decades.
Influential artists are highlighted on this compilation ~ Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Boyd Bennett & His Rockets, Jackie Brenston, Roy Brown, The Chanters, The Charms, Eddy Clearwater, Mac Curtis, Bill Doggett, The Dominoes, Charlie Feathers, "5" Royales, Wynoie Harris, Bull Moose Jackson, Little Willie John, Trini Lopez, Bonnie Lou, Big Jay McNeely, The Midnighters, Moon Mullican, Otis Redding & The Pinetoppers, The Sheiks, Joe Tex,Titus Turner and Young John Watson.
Many were number one "GOOD ROCKIN' TONIGHT" [Harris], "HAVE MERCY BABY" [Dominoes], "WORK WITH ME ANNIE" [Midighters], "HEARTS OF STONE" [Charms] and "HONKY TONK [Part 1 & 2] [Bill Doggett] ~ they were trail blazing hits that gave the world another slant on popular music of the day.
Hats off to Cary E. Mansfield and Bill Dahl [collection producers]...big thank you to Brian Giorgi and Bryon Davis, who were instrumental in tracing the early beginnings of rock and roll...from the vaults of the labels who led the way to the sounds we've come to know...gotta love it!

good compilation.......2006-08-11
Good overview of Ike, although missing some of the instrumental gems. Check out "I Like Ike" on Rhino as another good compilation.
Contrary to the implication of the "Editorial Review", Jackie Brenston was not only CREDITED with writing "Rocket 88", he actually DID write it, according to the folks still living in Clarksdale who knew both of them at the time.
Exellent cd of Ike Tuner & His Rhythm Kings.......2006-05-13
This is a great single disc collection of Ike Turner & His Rhythm Kings' brand of hot & sizzling rhythm & blues. From the huge hit Rocket 88 to the All The Blues medley, Ike's wild boogie piano playing and blues guitar is showcased well. This is one of those cd's you pop in your 50's custom/hotrod and blast while cruisin.' Great cd that jumps all the way through, and is great for jive dancers and swing dancers alike. Hot sizzling wild 50's r&b.
I wish I could rate this one higher........2003-06-13
Forget that this alblum is a good sampler of Ike Turner's best work. Forget that this is high quality release from Ace. The original version of Rocket 88 is included here! The song, for those of you that don't know is, THE mother of all R&B songs. If I have a favorite song - "rocket 88" is it. It is the epitome of the 50's R&B feel- drinking, women.. and that's not all...it *is* afterall, a song about a car! What makes this song so special is the feel. The unique guitar sound was achived form stuffing a damaged guitar amplifier full of paper. The result was the *first* example of distortion. Mix that with some killer tenor sax and some tough-guy lyrics, and you have one of the most historically important and hardest rocking songs of all time. Some claim "Rocket" to be the first Rock n' Roll song. Other great songs include: 'All the blues all the time' A medley in which Ike's tearin' it up on some popular blues riffs of the day. In most cases better guitar work than the original song!, 'Night Howler' A lawdy miss clawdy spin off...and a good one too!, 'I Ain't Drunk', 'Nobody Wants Me' in the tradition of fats domino's 'nobody loves me'
Rocket 88 alone, make this worth picking up. This alblum is the prize of my collection.
