Joe Pernice's slumbery songwriting and deadpan lyrical acumen is deservedly well-discussed. With the release of this double disc (one a live CD, the other a DVD), some of that attention will invariably shift to his band. They're much louder in the mix, it being a live recording made at Manhattan's Mercury Lounge in January, 2004. There's a grittiness to Pernice Brothers live shows. No one's gonna mistake them for the Blood Brothers, but leave it to production whiz and bassist Thom Monahan to get the sound just right. The group sounds a lot like a great "classic rock" act at their height, and not just for the cover of "Talk of the Town," the jangle-pop of "Monkey Suit" or that Pernice sounds so much like Morrissey on the final track, "Flaming Wreck." If an angry young Elvis Costello had made an album with `70s rockers Bread, it would sound exactly like this version of Pernice's Scud Mountain classic "Grudge F**k". --Mike McGonigal
