As a piece of propaganda, James Blunt's album Back to Bedlam does more for changing the face of the British Army than a series of television adverts ever could. Swapping a rifle for a guitar, the former cavalryman's ballad-heavy debut is a clearly aiming to win the battle for the public's hearts and minds. The U.K. success of singles like "You're Beautiful" and "No Bravery" (inspired by his time stationed in Bosnia) are both heartfelt and sensitive, the latter packing an additional emotional punch beyond the typical lovelorn ballads of his contemporaries like Damien Rice. But Blunt also sings with conviction about matters of the heart, and that's the territory that most of Back to Bedlam visits, with songs of loss like "Goodbye My Lover", "So Long Jimmy" and "Billy". And throughout, the arrangements remain understated yet effective, thanks to the input of such heavyweight producers and songwriters like Linda Perry and Guy Chambers. All of which prove that there's a lot of depth to this modern, musical hero. --Robert BurrowAlbum Description
Simply put, James Blunt is the most successful debut artist of the year in the UK! However, he isn't one of those guys who finished school and set off to become a musician. The one time British army captain (and latest ina long line of Blunts in the armed forces) served stints as a peacekeeper in Kosovo and guard at Buckingham Palace before hanging up his uniform. His days of carrying a gun behind him, Blunt quickly began turning heads with his soaring vocals and stirring songs. His debut album, Back to Bedlam, has earned widespread praise, including comparisons to the likes of Damien Rice, David Gray and a young Elton John.Album Description

Capo on the 8th Fret.......2007-06-16
Why it is James Blunt. But being ubiquitous, as it were, has its drawbacks, so get ready for the Blunt backlash.
Some people complained they were sick of his high voice, hearing the song so much, and why did he put his capo on the 8th fret, on the song "You're Beautiful," making it sound like he was plucking a ukelele. He sounds like a stalker in that song, obsessed with some girl he will never know in the biblical sense.
To the scoffers I say, James Blunt has prevailed, and not only that, he has done pretty well for a drab looking English bloke who is not really very tall. That super model was his new girl friend, which makes the song, "You're Beautiful" a self-fullfiling prophecy, or if anything, it exceeds his dream.
Back to Bedlam is a great album by a promising newcomer who has already scored several hits on his first go round. Love the way the piano is woven around his voice and guitar in "You're Beautiful" and on the other cuts on Back to Bedlam.
VERY GOOD...BUT BEWARE.......2007-02-17
Mr. Blunt has my vote!.......2007-01-24
A must-have album! (SPECIAL EDITION).......2006-11-30
"Back To Bedlam" is one of those rare albums with no filler tracks, nailing song after song after song. Blunt's style is mellow, nostalgic and melodramatic. He has a wonderful falsetto, which he often uses in his most emotionally charged ballads ("You're Beautiful", "Goodbye My Lover", "No Bravery"), but he never crosses the line of being corny or pathetic. Sure, there are a lot of artists of this style out there, but James Blunt is actually an awesome musician, a fantastic songwriter and a great singer.
He proves his singing talents even more on the second disk of this special edition of "Back To Bedlam". The second disk is called "Live in Ireland" and it is a live performance of most of the songs from the album, with three new tracks - "Where Is My Mind?", "Fall At Your Feet" and the fantastic "Sugar Coated". The CD is also enhanced with the "Goodbye My Lover" video, and a short documentary about the making of it.
This is a great double-disk to have in your collection. "Back To Bedlam" is an outstanding debut album, and it will be interesting to follow James Blunt's career from this point on.

A Unique Offering From an Equally Unique Band!.......2005-11-04
I just hope that they can keep it up. The musical world desperately needs bands like this!
Bedlam Ballroom.......2005-08-10
hot diggity!.......2005-06-23
Aside from the idiotic choice to put several seconds of an electronic beat at the beginning of "Bedbugs" (WHY, JIMBO? THAT AIN'T OLD-TIME MUSIC!), they're still just as jazzy as ever. However, I still stand by my belief that Perennial Favorites is their finest hour.
Good, not great.......2005-01-01
Influences Come From All Over.......2004-08-28
Zippers had to play Dixieland or Swing, or any other kind of music on their albums. Like most other bands, they play what they feel compelled to play. On this particular CD they play
Southern-Influenced music that is not like previous albums. Some
record buyers want bands to turn out same-sounding records so that when they listen to them there is no thinking involved. But
if an artist is allowed to express himself, or herself, wonderful
things can happen--like on this album. A little bit of R&B or
Rockabilly can be expected in Southern-influenced music. And there have been a lot of great Rockabilly groups to be influenced by over the years. Some of
the music here reminds me of Brave Combo (a band with no hint of
sticking to any genre, but still play great entertaining music.)
Bedlam Ballroom has the same great musicians as all the other
albums they have done. Maybe their next one will be like the
older ones, maybe it will be something completely different.
Variety, they say, is the spice. This CD is a great listen.
Buy it and grow. Or not. It's your cash.

Album Description
CD/DVD (NTSC/Region 2-5). Armed with guitar and piano, heart-wrenching songs and the sweetest voice heard on the airwaves since the classic singer-songwriter era of the Seventies, James Blunt rose from obscurity to become the biggest selling British artist of 2005. The most openly emotional of the new wave of sensitive singer-songwriters, when James left the army to pursue his musical dreams he found himself being championed by such luminaries as Elton John and legendary US songwriter Linda Perry (who signed him to her Custard label). Released quietly in the UK by Atlantic in October 2004, his debut album, 'Back to Bedlam', rose to prominence by word of mouth, fuelled by amusing and touching live performances. 'You're Beautiful', a song about a lifetime lived in a moment, became the soundtrack of a turbulent year, despite taking several weeks to reach number one. Back To Bedlam went on to become 2005's biggest selling album in the UK. Everything that makes James such a special talent can be seen and heard on these extraordinary live performances, filmed before an invited audience at the BBC in November 2005, and on tour in Ireland in December 2005. Whether solo or backed by a full band, he loses himself in his songs. It is the same quality of intensity captured in his promo for 'You're Beautiful', included here with his other videos. Between songs, James can be light-hearted and debonair. Warner. 2006. * Please note you will need an All Code DVD player to view.Customer Reviews:

A Purcell Sampler, or a Greatest Hits disk, if you prefer........2006-02-05
1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.
There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.
That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).
