3 out of 5 stars "One touch of my power...".......2007-05-25

The crown jewel here is Jeremy Spencer's vicious send-up of John Mayall, "Man Of Action"...and I say that as a long-time fan of Mayall. Like it or not, Spencer nails the Mayall style (and according to the liner notes, Mayall...who was in the audience...did NOT like it). This is the Peter Green Mac's "Odds & Sods"...scraps from the cutting room floor, each with their own moments of brilliance. If you're a Peter Green fan, you'll want this (along with the follow-up volume, "Show-Biz Blues: 1968 to 1970 Volume 2"). The sound quality is as good as can be reasonably expected from tracks that have been sitting on the shelf for 40 years. For the ultimate LIVE Mac with Green, go for the "Boston Box Set" (now ridiculously overpriced as an out-of-print "collectors" set) or the individual volumes of "Live In Boston" (Volumes 1 and 2 are reasonable, Volume 3 will COST ya...just like the "Boston Box"). For studio tracks, it's a no-brainer..."Then Play On" and "The Complete Blue Horizons Sessions" box set. Before you buy any of these, get John Mayall's "A Hard Road." The single disc is fine, collectors will want the 2-CD reissue.

This album doesn't work as an introduction to Green or the Green Mac. It works as a vault release for existing fans.

4 out of 5 stars fantastic taste of Peter Green years.......2003-08-12

collected out takes and alternates versions and live cuts of the Peter Green led "Original" Fleetwood Mac. Highlights include the long known but previously unreleased EP "The Milton Schlitz Show" [Fleetwood said 'The record company thought it was a wank'] with Jeremy Spencer leading the band through doo-wop, original Brit blues snob Alexis Korner, Lighting Hopkins ['Death Bells'], garage punk ['(Watch Out for Yourself) Jones'] and a dead on imitation of John Mayall ['Man of Action'] all while portraying "host" Milton Schlitz; a great take of Spencer's 'Someone's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight' an early take of 'Show Biz Blues when it was called 'Do You Give a Damn for Me', the full twenty minute take of 'Underway' which is just beautiful intertwining guitars and the full 'Madge Session' and an alternate take of 'The Green Manalishi.'

4 out of 5 stars As much variety as a "Vaudeville" show.......2002-03-10

When it comes to variety, and a little something for everyone, brought on especially by the diverse musical tastes within the group--no one, not even Led Zeppelin, did it better than early Fleetwood Mac.
I must admit, I'm a recent convert to Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Having not been impressed by the "commercial boredom" of the Buckingham/Nicks version, and finding out about an earlier unit which was much closer to the John Mayall and Ten Years After style of British blues rock, I was very eager to hear this version of the group, and this album especially. This 2-CD set is very similar in nature to Led Zeppelin's "Coda". The first side is mostly a "Jeremy Spencer comedy show", and the second is serious outtakes and jams from the sessions for the lp "Then Play On" (1969-70)
The whole set took a little time to grow on me, but now I get the music and the way Fleetwood Mac was set up in those days. When I first listen to the first CD, I was a little taken aback by Jeremy Spencer's comedy routine. But now I understand. Many British bands at the time had their own "Keith Moon"-a clown to add comedy relief to a sometimes boring 12-bar blues show, and Jeremy Spencer was the clown of this group. His "schtick" here was the "Milton Schlitz show", a fictitious character that he pretends to be, who is an American MC, a la Ed Sullivan/Milton Berle, announcing varoius performers in the best geezerly-Alzheimer riddled American accent (you'd forget it was a young British lad doing it), often almost forgetting the names of the artists he presents because he's not "hip" enough, and then proceeds to mimic the performers themselves. Although I think his imitation of John Mayall sound more like Alvin Lee imitating Kermit The Frog, Jeremy Spencer had a real creative talent for musical comedy that he could have used after Fleetwood Mac, and it is such a waste that he didn't. He could have provided a lot of material for "Doctor Demento", if he kept at it.
As far as diversity within the group, in general, what more can I say than others have already said. You had Danny Kirwan-"The Balladeer", Jeremy Spencer-"The slide-guitar playing comedian", and Peter Green- "The serious blues rocker", not to mention Fleetwood and McVie (Mac), who could play it all! For all the talk of Led Zeppelin's musical diversity, at veering from Metal-to folk-to blues-to rockabilly, Fleetwood Mac answered with veering from blues-to jazz-to folk-to rockabilly-to doo wop-to acid rock, and equally adept at playing them all. And like Led Zeppelin, it was the diversity that kept them together those few years, rather than tearing them apart. I think much credit for that goes to Peter Green. Although he was somewhat the leader of this group, he was willing to share the spotlight with Kirwan and Spencer, and let them play what they wanted to, even if it wasn't his "cup of tea". In the days when groups like CCR and Cream were breaking up over musical differences and stepping on each other's egos, the kind of democracy that existed in Fleetwood Mac was almost unheard of.
But they all came together to contibute to Peter's musical vision on the lp "Then Play On", where much of the outtakes and sessions for appear on this set, especially the second disc. For me, the prime cuts from those sessions that spark the most creativity are "The Madge Sessions 1" which starts out as a nice little shuffle, and gains momentum, turning into a full-on Yardbirds-style "rave up" toward the finale, with guitar duels all the way there. Mick Fleetwood, the drummer, was really at his best on "The Madge Sessions", and in general, was a more energetic drummer behind Peter Green's more challenging music, than the "fluff" he had to play behind in the Buckingham/Nicks era. "Oh Well" is an alternate take of "Oh Well" from "Then Play On", with Peter Green seeming to play with a little more fire than on the album version. Then there is "October Jam 1" and "October Jam 2", "October Jam 2" being a much nicer melody that unfortunately ends abruptly, and could have been turned into a really nice song had they worked on it more, but was left as it was in the can. And the final highlight, "The Green Manalishi", perhaps the heaviest song besides "Oh Well" of the Peter Green-era, and the ultimate expression of where he wanted to take the group had he stayed.
As his music evolved, Peter Green seemed to be more stubborn than his other British counterparts like Eric Clapton and Alvin Lee, as far as not wanting to stray too far from the blues vein. It was perhaps a good idea that he stayed rooted in the blues so long, for as he progressed, he was possibly a sharper guitarist because of it. And he never let his blues turn into full-on "heavy metal" either, his guitar sound staying fairly clean, and the more aggressive songs like "Oh Well" and "Green Manalishi" not sounding too far off from what Ten Years After might have done. If anything, his guitar playing progressed more in the direction of free-form jazz, a la Jeff Beck, and much of the second disc of this set are jam sessions that sound more like Jeff Beck instrumentals from the 70s. But if you're a serious guitar player, this should not only be a clinic for you, but also a delight.
As a whole, this 2 CD set is a nice history of the evolution of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac through behind-the-scenes sessions and unreleased material. Looking back, I probably would have preferred to just get "Then Play On" itself. But then, I wouldn't have had Jeremy Spencer's comedy routine to make me laugh.

4 out of 5 stars A Mixed Blessing.......2002-02-18

(3-1/2 stars) With excellent liner notes - including a detailed rumination of blues-zen-master Peter Green's breakdown - Fans of Peter Green will feel the need to get this. And they are going to be blown away by disc two, kicking off with the full 15-minute-plus versions of both "Underway" and the "Madge" songs (spliced together from two separate jams that couldnt sound more different).

These three songs are the triumphant high point of this set. But the concept of the "Vaudeville" box was to equally represent the vaudevillian nature of the band - the silliest parts of which consist mostly Jeremy Spencer's often irritating forays into standup, doo-wop and white-boy-blues-preening. Danny Kirwan also manages to contribute a few meandering ballads to the mix, including a version of "Although the Sun Is Shining" which manages to be much cheesier than the album version.

Most of these moments occur on Disc one, which also unfortunately happens to showcase some of Green's best straight blues playing out of the two discs. Of note on Disc 1 is the original demo version of "Showbiz Blues," (which also appears, complete with groupies and all at the end of disc one) called "Do You Give a Damn For Me" and rest assured - its hardcore. On disc two is another tight live version of "Oh Well" (yet again sans the classical part 2, I am afraid), an unreleased instrumental "October Jam part 2" (and its lesser, bouncier cousin part 1) which has some intriguing chord progressions that make up for its abrupt ending. A studio version of "Green Manalishi" also pokes up, and is outstanding, but pales in comparison to the 13-minute live version on the "Boston Box" set. Also included is a rawer version of "World In Harmony," which still manages to be as lovely as it is on the album _Then Play On_. The album ends with a meditative Kirwan piece "Farewell" which apparently made its way onto Kiln House - its a nice, breezy way to end the show.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STAR COLLECTION.......2005-06-22

Lee Perry has already been the source of an excellent three disk retrospective, Island's ARKOLOGY. One must wonder how much would be leftover for this four disk set. Lots. I AM THE UPSETTER provides a vivid portrail of the eccentric Reggae producer/artist/singer, that may even illuminate his work more than the already stellar ARKOLOGY collection. While ARKOLOGY provides most of the higher profile songs that Perry was involved with (JUNIOR MURVIN-POLICE AND THEIVES, MAX ROMEO-WAR INNA BABYLON, ETC), this set delves deeper into Perry's work, including more of his early solo work and numerous rare sides, as well as a number of his "hits" not included in the earlier set (THE WAILERS-SMALL AXE, I AM THE UPSETTER and PEOPLE FUNNY BOY by LEE PERRY, CURLY LOCKS, BEAT DOWN BABYLON-JUNIOR BYLES).

The set also seperates the dub tracks into an intoxicating single disk, that shoud please any Perry fan. This highlights the amazing sounds that Perry was able to get out of basic four track production. He weilded a low-fi studio like a true virtuoso. It also includes a taste of the fine work that Perry performed with the Wailers, just as the band was finding it's true voice (Check out AFRICAN HERBSMAN by the Wailers for the whole story).

I would not recommend this instead of ARKOLGY, but as an excellent companion piece that should create the cornerstone in any serious Reggae fans collection. Though there are a few overlaps in the two, they both are essential and I highly recommend them both.

5 out of 5 stars * FOUR DISCS! ESSENTIAL!! BRILLIANT!!! *.......2005-06-16

Quality and quantity reign on this mind-blowing set. First of all, Lee "Scratch" Perry truly is a musical genius, and all the proof is here. This four disc set gives a comprehensive, compelling overview of Perry's golden years, displaying a wide range of artists and styles in a carefully organized manner. We are treated to many Scratch solo works, as well as plenty of wildly creative production for other artists. We see Scratch's production talents grow from brilliant to absolutely mind-blowing (check out the eight minute "City Too Hot," for example). There is an entire disc devoted to highlighting Perry's dub works, but there is even more great dub spread throughout the entire collection, and Perry's work is profoundly creative and engaging no matter what the medium. Here we have dub, roots reggae, soul, rocksteady/proto-reggae, grooving instrumentals, and all-around wild, unbridled sonic creativity.

The packaging here is beautiful, and the liner notes (really a small hardcover book) are thoroughly researched and enlightening. There is overall commentary on Perry's career, as well as information and commentary for each individual track, and also historical perspective for the musical styles and formats represented. Importantly, sonic quality is absolutely excellent, usually improving significantly upon tracks which are duplicated on existing releases. The price is almost ridiculously low.

I unreservedly and enthusiastically recommend this set to Perry beginners and experts alike. Long story short, this is absolutely essential Upsetter music. Thank you, Trojan Records.

4 out of 5 stars Killer Rocksteady, some of the best!.......2004-10-14

While the first CD of this set contains most of Derrick Morgan's hits from the Ska period of the early 60s, it is the second CD that shows this artist at his peak in the later 60s. Derrick uses lyrics borrowed from Jamaican folk music paired with the intense beat of the rocksteady period to make the best music of his career. I'm particularly fond of his duets with George Agard (check out "Me Naw Give Up"). You have two of the best Jamaican singers of the time over some of the rawest, most insistent rocksteady ever recorded, driven by scratchy guitar and heavy basslines, this music sounds raw compared to the more polish releases by groups like the Melodians and the Maytals. The duets with Paulette are very affecting as well ("You Never Miss Your Water"). Crucial sounds from an era of Jamaican popular music that deserves to be more widely heard.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection.......2007-03-03

I find that really good reggae/ska collections are few and far between. This is one of them. There are some really nice pieces on this, such as: KING OF SKA, JESERINE, GET UP EDINA, 007, PERSONAL POSSESSION, MOTHER LONG TONGUE, PRETTY AFRICA, A IT MEK, COCONUT WATER, WRITING ON THE WALL and others. The man was quite prolific. FYI, it doesn't have his biggest hit: Israelites.

You get 46 songs for under $20. So, even tho a few are not among his best, there are plently to make it worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Long Live Desmond.......2006-05-30

Desmond Dekker was turned down in his first few attempts at breaking into the Jamaican music industry...thankfully for us he found Leslie Kong and Derrick Morgan.
Desmond brought Jamaican Music to the world well ahead of Bob Marley (Isrealites), and is a must for any collector. His early music is an outstanding example of the music that would eventually become Reggae (Ska and Rocksteady).
Anyway, Desmond just passed this week after 40 years of bringing music to the people- he will be missed...do yourself a favor and aquaint yourself with him quickly

4 out of 5 stars charming & sweet .......2005-09-30

anyone who has the slightest interest in jamaican music knows the name Desmond Dekker well. A legendary figure from that prolific island (thanks much in part to his long relationship with jamaican-chinese record producer/manager Leslie Kong); his songs "007 (Shanty Town)", "Honour Your Father & Mother", and "Israelites" are probably his most well-known tunes...but this superb anthology reveals many many more classic gems! i was enomoured with this disc after the first 4 tracks alone. i especially like the song "Dracula" and "Madgie." Dekker was blessed with a really beautiful voice that is both smooth like a 50's soul singer, and charmingly innocent and sweet. in fact, charm is really the main appeal of his recorded work and all of it presented here is a wonderful place to dig in for the uninitiated. this is the kind of music that i would recommend to someone who is more of an old time r'n'b fan, rather than a hardcore reggae fan.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This one will make you feel like you're in Jamaica.......2003-05-12

After reading the Marley biography "Catch a Fire," I was primed to get into more of the Wailer's stuff, and this CD has become a personal favorite. I now listen to this CD as frequently as "Legend" and Jimmy Cliff's "Harder They Come" both of which are reggae classics. On "Best" you'll be able to pick up on the early reggae 'rock steady' influence of American pop, with plenty of falsetto harmonies coming from Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh. 'Soul Shakedown Party,' 'Mr. Brown,' 'I Know a Place' and many of the other tracks on this recording simply rock, and will make you feel great. A warning though: this CD is remastered from original recordings and sounds scratchy and old in some places. If you're an audiophile, this may bother you. For me, it only adds to the authenticity of the music, and makes me think of a more innocent time! I hope you enjoy this CD as much as I do!

5 out of 5 stars Essential material, but not in an essential context.......2002-03-11

The tracks are of historic import, the remastered sound is excellent, the booklet is packed with information and a good essay. Is there any Marley fan, though, who doesn't already own these tracks, perhaps even in triplicate? Anyway, if you don't, this is a great catch-up opportunity, although all these tracks can also be found remastered in their original context, the two CDs "African Herbsman" and "Soul Rebel" on Trojan Records. If you're thinking of the "Songs of Freedom" box set (a must-have), be aware that the best of these tracks can be found there in comparable sound quality.

      Album Description

Full Title - Moon Hop Best Of The Early Years 1960-'69. Focusing on the most successful period in Derrick's recording career, 'Moon Hop' brings together his most popular Ska, Rocksteady & early Reggae recordings from the sixties. Compiled chronologically, the selection illustrates the ease with which he was able to remain at the forefront of the industry, despite various changes in style that occurred over the most significant decade in Jamaican music history. Many of these sides have remained unavailable to the general public for well over forty years & fetch vast sums on the collector's market - now you can enjoy over 50 of them for less than the price of just one original 7 inch single! 54 tracks in a slipcase. 5 out of 5 stars expensive but worth it.......2006-02-03

This is a great four disc set spanning the career of the Upsetter. There are many collections of scratch and this one hit the note perfectly. Whether your an avid collector or just beginning to experience Lee Perry, you should hear these discs. If you own a lot of Perry then you will know a lot of these tracks, but they are presented nicely and you get a few songs that you probably haven't heard. If your not familiar with scratch then this is a good place to start before you go buy a bunch of junk pirated albums. You also get an insert booklet that has some interesting stuff about each song. Overall a great buy issued by Trojan, so you know the tracks are clear and original.

5 out of 5 stars great look at Perry Protege.......2000-09-19

Anchored by his most famous tracks "Beat Down Babylon," "Da Da,", "Poor Chubby," and "Curly Locks," this collection of Junior Byles offers the listener some of the most powerful, moving, and overtly militant tracks recorded in the 1970's. add to the mix that he worked extensively with Lee "Scratch" Perry and the music is nothing but gold waiting to be mined.

Byles is to this day sadly unknown, but hopefully this collection will begin to offer him the repsect he deserves. It should.

4 out of 5 stars Rocking wit green riddim.......1999-09-16

Fine reggae outing from the vocalist extraordnaire Similar in style to contemporory Max Romeo and with an equal ear for a rocking tune.Contains at least three absolute classics which more than make up for 1 or 2 (only slightly)weaker tunes later on the record.Highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars ...only for electronica/industrial fans..........2004-02-02

Maybe I'm being a little generous by rating this CD 4 stars...but hey...I AM a hardcore Madonna fan, as well as a big fan of 80's electronica and industrial music. Now, I do warn...this is Otto's music. Madonna's voice is sampled throughout, but the sound of early 80's underground electronica is classic...though my favorite song is "We are the Gods." I LOVE that German industrial sound...so if you like this genre of music along with retro sounding electronica, then you'll like the CD. It isn't for everyone though, so I suggest you sample it first.

1 out of 5 stars Worst CD ever!.......2001-12-11

These aren't even songs for crying out loud! Just a desperate attempt by this guy Otto to make some money using Madonna's name and voice (Which was altered so much in some of the tracks that it doesn't even sound like her.) Save yourself the time and money--don't buy it!!

1 out of 5 stars The Early Years-Madonna is false advertising!.......1999-06-10

To all of you Madonna fans who can't get enough of her early dance pop years, do not buy this CD. I bought it in hopes of hearing what Madonna sounded like before she became a household name. Unfortunately, this entire CD contains only samples of her voice totalling about 3 minutes of airtime. The songs are basically synthesized experiments by Otto van Werner(sp?). MADONNA DOES NOT SING ON THIS CD. Otto used clips of a few words here and there that Madonna spoke and just looped them over and over again. This CD is false advertising--it is not Madonna's work, but Otto's. Please do not buy this CD. You will only be sorely disappointed.
