4 out of 5 stars Let 'er Rip!.......2002-07-05

If you're reading this, you probably know all about the history of Sun records and the great artists that passed through its doors; if you don't, then where you been livin', man? Well, you won't find any of the "big" artists on this cd, but you will find some good old rockabilly cut by a bunch of cats who were looking to be the next Elvis. Some of the cuts were unreleased, others were demos sent by artists hoping to get called back to make a record for Sun. A couple of these artists are unknown. If you can afford the Sun singles collection, that's great, but who won't find any of the cuts on this cd on there. And some of this stuff is pretty good, and stands on its own merits. I second the call on Jimmy Wages; he was just a little too primitive and twisted to have a record released back in the mid 1950's. Both of his tunes on here rock! In fact, out of 31 songs, there are really only about 5 or 6 that I want to skip over. The songs by Dick Penner, Andy Anderson, Malcolm Yelvington, Ernie Barton, and the two unknown artists are particular winners in my book, but I've caught myself singing a bunch of other ones too. Not only do you get a bunch of pretty good to excellent songs, you get a nice fat booklet of liner notes, photographs etc., that is simply first rate. All in all, this is an excellent overview of some obscure and rockin tunes.

I really like this series, but at this point, it seems like they're seriously running out of Sun stuff to release. I mean, look at their huge inventory that focus strictly on their Sun releases-HUGE I tell you (The Sun Singles, Vol. 1-6 [BOX SETs] 48 cd's of just singles).

This cd has little flow, and a lot of it is not even legitimately Sun recordings, ie, some were just submitted and ignored. What makes this cd worth buying however, is Jimmy Wages. He was a true wild man, and they've got 2 of his known 3 recordings. The original Problem Child is also included.

Of the volumes that I have, Vol. 5 is the best.
