The Brass Band Marches on with Ives.......2005-05-28
Ives had great respect for brass ensembles and wrote music expressly for them. These are included as are a number of works for chamber orchestra etc. The collection is played beautifully and the recorded sound is excellent. With some reservations this 'Remembrance: A Charles Ives Collection' is not only successful but a fine addition to the Ives recordings.
Perhaps just returning from a performance of 'The Unanswered Question' performed by the LA Philharmonic with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting where the mystery and spirit of Emerson's poem "The Sphynx" which inspired Ives to write this brief 6-minute piece colors this listener's full appreciation of these transcriptions. Originally scored for strings, four flutes, and trumpet (in the wondrous Disney Hall acoustics Salonen stood alone on the stage conducting the off stage strings, the flutes in the organ loft and the trumpet in the highest balcony in a three way conversation that seemed to come both from within the bodies of the audience and the ether of the universe, this work fails to hold the importance of the solo brass instrument playing against a brass ensemble. A small quibble perhaps, but some of Ives' works were specifically designated for certain instruments and defy tampering.
In all a recording to add to the Ives Collection and one that is certainly well performed. Grady Harp, May 05
A great collection.......2003-05-12
Many of these pieces, most in fact, are difficult to find anywhere else, and are of enormous interest. One of Ives's earliest pieces, "Holiday Quickstep," for instance. There are also engaging interpretations of his more esoteric and mysterious works (The Unanswered Question, Ann Street), personal pieces written for piano and soprano (Remembrance, Evening, Mists), tone poems, and more lively, sometimes comic, sketches (Gyp the Blood or Hearst, Tarrant Moss). The performances, by the Detroit Chamber Winds, are energetic and gratifying. For most of the stuff on this disc, however, there is very little to compare it to.
This is an immensley charming collection of short pieces that any Ives fan is sure to value.

Though Horne is audibly at the end of her long and rich career, she did a good deed for American music with this disc, which consists of songs by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and a new song cycle by William Bolcom, from which the disc takes its title. Horne's voice has a quiver, a lack of center, almost as if it refuses to stop singing Rossini (Horne's lifelong specialty). However, it's worth buying for the Bolcom cycle, which is one of his best vocal works, typically an eclectic, natural outgrowth of Bernstein's style with Horne gamely employing a wide range of vocal techniques with more eloquence than one could hope for. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
Exceptionally moving.......2003-10-16
It has been mentioned that Horne is now far past her prime, and that may be, but even far past her prime she is far better than most singers half her age. There is still vibrancy, life, and depth to her voice. It communicates on a very deep level. Martin Katz, her life long accompanist, is, as usual, a revelation as an accompanist. Unlike people think, the accompanist just doesn't play in the background, he is a very vital part of making a performance work. Accompaning singers is a very new art form, and many performers of earlier ages simply had very bad accompanist. With Gerald Moore we started to have people who knew how to support the singer, actually adding to the performance giving it depth and helping the singer shine. Now we are so used to good accompanist, and are so accustomed to their high level of performance, it is very easy to forget what they add.
Katz knows Horne well, and is fully aware of when she is having troubles supporting a phrase, or when she is in best voice. He gives so much to her awesome performance through his very sensitive way of playing this music.
I would recommend this for anyone to buy: fans of modern art songs, fans of Marilyn Horne, and simply fans of good singing.
Horne brings these wonderful masterpieces to life!.......1999-07-17

Customer Reviews:
Fresh, genial, sensitively articulated ... delightful!.......2006-03-12
To my ears, the music making on the album under review is some of the best, pure and simple. Well, pure indeed, but certainly not 'simple'! 'Warmly sympathetic' (or maybe even 'freshly unsophisticated') would be more to the mark when describing the general 'tone' or 'character' of the performances. Both Maureen Forrester and Heinz Rehfuss have a beautifully full and rounded sound, with fine, clear diction, and with beautiful nuancing of deeper word meanings, I think. I especially like Rehfuss' voice, which has a nicely ringing, clear but warmly sympathetic timbre. His stylish, sensitively articulated 'Lied des Verfolgtem im Turm' I find maybe the best performance of this song I have ever heard. Generally, the singers are recorded rather closely, but I personally like that very much, allowing them to focus more on finer coloring and diction, which is exquisite in both singers, especially, to my ears, Heinz Rehfuss.
As for the orchestral playing under maestro Felix Prohaska, it is crisp and genial. The orchestra sounds a little recessed behind the soloists; it is ever clearly present, but the soloists obviously take center stage.
I for one have happily discovered, with this recording, a freshly sympathetic, colorful and consistently rewarding 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' that is just that little bit 'different' (generally 'light' of character), but fitting nicely in with all of my other favorite recordings of this anthology. (Well, yeah, maybe it doesn't plummet the depths of the emotions like for example the magnificent Anne Sofie von Otter & Thomas Quasthoff with Abbado, but it IS a highly consistent pack of artful, freshly genial performances which hold one's attention from beginning to end). So, with only a slight reservation - this is may not be THE 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' to own, and a lot comes down to your own taste, but who could do with only one version anyway -, I would really like to recommend it to anyone else as well.
Totally Convincing Mahler.......1999-04-12
