Director Tim Burton's adaptation of author Daniel Wallace's bittersweet Southern Gothic novel has been billed as his first mainstream character drama, a notion that conveniently ignores the story's inherent fables and flights of imagination. But composer Danny Elfman understands their every dark nook and murky cranny with this magical, often deftly understated score. While the epic melodrama of his comic book scores (Batman, Spider-Man, The Hulk, et. al.) have made him a mainstream Hollywood music star, longtime fans know that the composer's true emotional range is seldom tapped as well as it is working with longtime collaborator Burton. His music here bridges the delicate pastoralism of Rachel Portman and restless, rhythmic mysteries of Thomas Newman, seasoned with twangy fiddles and bowings to the film's occasionally Gothic turns and concludes with the deliciously loopy "Twice the Love (Siamese Twins Song)." Anchored by Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam's wistful theme song "Man of the Hour" and a half-dozen pop chart nuggets than span half-a-century, Elfman's work here (as well as Pearl Jam's) received a much-deserved Golden Globe nomination. --Jerry McCulley

Fishy Ending.......2005-09-15
Movie Title: Big Fish
Produced By: Schmidt Richard D. Zanuck, Dan Jinks
Director: Tim Burton
Length: 2 hours. 5 minutes
Rated: PG-13
Released Date: 2003
Do you like movies that will make you cry so hard that you will need a dump truck full of tissues? Or when a person gets to a scary part in the woods and a man almost dies and gets your hopes up. Well if you do this is the movie the for you.
This movie has terrific characters in it. If you are wondering how I'll tell you how. Because all characters fit into the part that they are supposed to play in. defiantly Edward bloom. Edward bloom is the star of this movie. He is a brave and ignorant man. So if you don't believe me that he fits in his part GIVE ME A CALL.
Also this movie has a lot of fantasy world in it. Like the 12 foot tall giant the moving (killing) trees. Also the eye. The eye is a eye that a witch has that will show you how you die. Pretty freaky ha. Most movies that you see are realistic not fantasy except for a couple.....this one is. It's a very good movie you really really need too watch it.
This movie is mostly about an old man that tells a bunch of stories about him in his younger years. He talks about what he does and how he does it. You will never understand this movie if you don't watch it from the beginning.
This movie also has a couple of related and spooky parts in it. Like when his wife walks in will he is in the bath tub under water with his arms crossed a crossed his chest. And at the end of the movie he went to the lake and his son dropped him in the water and the old mans arms was crossed like in the bath tub. That is a related. The spooky is........well trust me you don't want too know. Any way I don't want to ruin it.
When you watch this movie please call me and tell me if you have any more of them tissues. Because I need them for next time I watch this movie. Sorry I couldn't tell you more but I really didn't want to tell you none of it. I just wanted to say WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW!!!!!
Big Fish Soundtrack.......2005-09-04
It is always great when you buy a soundtrack that actually plays the music exactly as it happened in the movie. There have been some that I've bought that are 'inspired' by the movie.
My only disappointment was that there were some songs like Sandra's Farewell that I just craved went longer than 1min 16secs.
Despite this, I'm glad I have got it.
Perfect complement to a fantastic film.......2005-07-27
Tim Burton's film Big Fish is a wonderful movie, and composer Danny Elfman's Oscar-nominated score complements it beautifully. Elfman's music is very understated in the movie, and it wasn't until I listened to the film's soundtrack recently that I realized how hauntingly beautiful his music is.
Elfman's music is perfect for Burton's magical film about the larger-than-life character of Edward Bloom. Mystical, whimsical, and eerie at times, the score takes you deep into the weird and wondrous world of the character. The emotional "Sandra's Theme" is one of the best pieces of music on the soundtrack, and the jazzy number "Twice the Love" (the Siamese twins' song) closes out the CD with a bang.
The soundtrack is mostly instrumental, with the exception of the first seven tracks. These tracks are an eclectic mixed bag of music, featuring artists ranging from Pearl Jam to Buddy Holly to Elvis Presley. The real gold on this particular CD, though, is Elfman's music.
Even if you haven't seen the film (and you should; it's wonderful), if you enjoy quality instrumental music, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this soundtrack.
"Amazing" song.......2005-02-27
I believe the other song refered to in the trailers is Josh Kelley's "Amazing" from his For the Ride Home CD. Hope this helps those of you who were looking for this song as I was.
good soundtrack for a nice movie.......2004-08-13
The Big Fish soundtrack goes well with the best movie. I was impressed, but I think that "Dinah" by Bing Crosby is the oldest song on here. It's a neat thing to listen to if you're traveling somewhere far away and you're driving.I usually just listen from track 1-7 because they're the only ones that aren't classical, and thanks to Elvis Presley's superb existence and the year 1955, we have rock music!

The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04
Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.
Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22
Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.
A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17
I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.
For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22
Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.
A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12
The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

Let's Mott Together.......2004-07-16
George Thorogood and his Delaware Destroyers have been raisin' rock 'n' roll Shenanigans now for over thirty years. Coming out of Detroit in 1974, they got to release their first self-titled studio album in 1977. However, it was not until another nine years of roadwork, and several studio albums later, that the band hit pay-dirt with their first live album, simply titled `Live' in 1986. It made the live Destroyer experience available to the world. And after all is said and done, it is not surprising that this is where the band finally clicked on album. George Thorogood and the Destroyers have always been a live beast, bursting into life when they hit the boards in front of a frenzied audience, but wilting slightly when cooped up in a recording studio.
In the Destroyers career so far there have been three live albums, the original from 1977, then lately there was Live in 1999, but it's this middle one from 1995 that I picked as the best of a good bunch. The simple reason is that the performance is explosive, well recorded, chock-a-block full of Thorogood classics, the odd surprise here and there, and, like any good live recording, it is topped and tailed by a good solid slab of Mr. Chuck Berry.
The ever dependable Destroyers, stripped down to a basic four piece which this dog prefers (I'd rather have four musicians working hard than a nine piece being able to take it easy), put out a good solid sound. Apart from the amazing George out front on lead guitar and vocals, you have the exuberant Hank Carter on saxophone, who also contributes a touch of keyboards when the feeling takes. These two are backed by one of the most solid rhythm sections in history - Bill Blough on bass and Jeff Simon on drums. Over the years these two have welded together a mighty partnership.
For the first eleven songs the boys crank up their audience with a set full of Thorogood destroyers, working the fifth member of the band, the audience, to frenzy. Particularly on the tribute to John Lennon with their version of Larry Williams' 'Bad Boy', which the Beatles would of first started playing in their days in Hamburg nightclubs back in the early sixties. But when George introduces Elvin (Bad Boy) Bishop to the crowd to join the band for some slide guitar on `Let's Work Together', the audience can barely contain themselves with excitement.
To top that, out from the wings for the final two songs comes Mr. Piano of Rock 'n' Roll/Blues/Boogie, Mr. Johnny Johnson. In his past Johnson has been chief sideman to all the greats including Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, etc., and if you have never heard barrel house, honky-tonk piano, lend an ear to the last two tracks on this album. The first of the two is a storming version of 'St. Louis Blues', then we are led away by the rock 'n' roll national anthem 'Johnny B. Goode'. By this time the excitement contained in the grooves of your CD can barely be controlled as your CD player hangs onto the disc by the skin of its teeth. The band members shoulder each other out of the way to take turns at soloing. Finally George breaks back in to take control and brings the song to a shattering climax.
All in all a very satisfying live recording of a band at the top of their game. Not many people know that when George sings...
"Why don't you get a haircut and get a real job,
Just like your big brother Bob"
...he is of course singing about his soul brother `The Prince of Darkness', Bob Finch of Tahitian Queen fame. Well, now you know.

Rock & Roll (as good as it gets).......2003-06-15
This really is the live rock and roll album to buy the energy throughout this cd never falters and the musicianship is great and when you put this on in a car and crank it up to the max volume you have as another review says the ultimate driving record.
the best driving music ever (if you don't mind speeding).......2001-07-23
this is the best cd i know to drive to the rocking music just keeps you up there. anyone who has had the privalage of being at a gt show will know that this cd catches the feelings perfectly well worth a buy (we in europe cannot buy it in shops as its been deleted from euro stock)
Sound is the problem........2001-06-27
Let's Work Together documents Thorogood live in 1995. By opening and closing with Chuck Berry ("No Particular Place To Go" "Johnny B. Goode")Thorogood let's the listener know this is a night of pure rock and roll. Racing through a mix of old and newer songs, George and the Destroyers put on a solid show. The main problem is it sounds like a good bootleg. The music is muddy and the crowd, while there, sounds very far away. This is a real problem for what is otherwise a good selection of Thorogood where he's best: Live.
GO GEORGE.......2001-06-25
george is the best if you can't go and see the great man in action then this is the next best thing keep on rockin'

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Perfect introduction to the carillon..........1998-10-30
James Lawson plays the carillon at the Crystal Cathedral, a unique instrument because of its major-third overtones as opposed to the typical minor-third overtones of a carillon. The Cathedral Carillon has a particularly rich sound, which Lawson harnesses with a flair in his arrangements of hymns tunes and recognizable classics. The carillon has long been known as the most democratic of instruments, and Lawson plays it as it should be heard--with music people know and love.
This recording is very relaxing as well, and is of paticular use as focus music for prayer or small worship settings, or for listening at the end of a long day.

THE MOTHER OF ALL LIVE ALBUMS !!!.......2004-01-02
I purchased this album 2nd hand about 7 years ago and have since acquired all of George's albums on cd (20 at last count).Although they are all great, this one stands out as my favourite. As I write,I have just finished listening to it again and it confirms in my mind that this is not only Thorogood's best ever album, but (and this is a BIG statement) the BEST LIVE ALBUM,BAR NONE,ever released by anyone, and I include the Stones,Zeppelin,AC/DC,etc in that. Seriously, this is the Mother (with a capital M)of all live albums. Recorded in Atlanta and St.Louis, the scene is set right from the start with the expectant crowd chanting "George,George" before the Destroyers rip into a raucous rendition of "No Particularlar Place To Go". "Ride On Josephine" is a ball-tearing tribute to Bo Diddley and that's followed by a gutsy version of the Beatles' "Bad Boy". "Cocaine Blues" is delivered with a kind of hard rockin' country style before "the show starts" with that wake-up call to all those dull, boring chicks that we've all had at one time or another, "If You Don't Start Drinkin'". "I'm Ready" follows (that's the one from "Haircut" not the earlier, different song) before George takes some refreshment - "You can't do the blues without the booze" and launches into a poignant version of "I'll Change My Style". The album picks up momentum again with "Get A Haircut", a blistering version of "Gear Jammer","Move It On Over" and "You Talk Too Much". The best is saved till the end with the encores. Guitar legend Elvin Bishop joins the band on "Let's Work Together" which is delivered in an almost evangelistic way with George blessing the "congregation" in the leadup to the song.Johnny Johnson makes an appearance on this and also on "St.Louis Blues" which in my opinion is the pinnacle of a set in which it is difficult to pick a highlight, such is the quality of this record. Finally, "the rock'n'roll national anthem" - "Johnny B.Goode" is probably the best and ballsiest version I've heard - "Let's shake the roof off this mother tonight!" My only complaint is that the song fades out before the end,but this in no way detracts from the impact of the album. My advice, get this album, get your mates round, have a few beers and play this record LOUD !!

The rich-toned, musically elegant, always dignified contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993) is probably best known as the first African-American to sing at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, but by the time she did (in the mid '50s), her once burnished, glorious voice was no longer at its best. Years before, when she was not permitted to sing in the Daughters of the American Revolution's Constitution Hall (or any other hall in the U.S. capital), she gave a concert in the open air, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, which was attended by press, dignitaries, and a crowd of more than 75,000. Much of her late work is well known--arias from Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, spirituals, and the like--but this CD also allows us to hear the voice when it was young--in the 1930s and '40s. One can almost hear Schubert's trout ("Die Forelle") dancing around in the water, and an aria by Scarlatti shows Anderson's coloratura abilities--the big voice could be scaled down to intimate, chamberlike proportions. She brings her intelligence and textual insights to other songs by Schubert and Brahms as well. This is a marvelous collection and a fine tribute to an American original. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Marian Anderson - an outstanding collection.......2003-05-03
This CD with recordings of Marian Anderson between 1936 and 1952, should be heavily promoted. The CD gives listeners a fantastic opportunity to hear the singer in a variety of song styles and languages. I heard her sing live, once, in the 1960's and was stunned then by her vocal skills and musicality. This is the first record or CD which truly reflects her amazing talent.

Classic blues-rock band.......2003-08-25
This compilation covers the period 1967 to 1972 and contains the best tracks from their most famous period. They have recorded some interesting music since then, most notably the album Boogie 2000, which I've already reviewed.
Here you can find all their big hits. On the road again, my favorite track, was a UK top ten hit and a USA top 20 hit in 1968. Going up the country became a top 20 hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Let's work together was Canned Heat's biggest UK hit, reaching the top three although it was only a top 30 hit in America. Bryan Ferry later covered it as Let's stick together and also had a huge British hit with it. Country singer Dwight Yoakam also recorded a great cover of the song, proving that a great song can be adapted to any style of music and still sound great.
If you remember and enjoy On the road again, Going up the country and Let's work together, then you will surely enjoy the rest of the music here, as those songs are typical of Canned Heat's style. Apart from a great cover of That's all right Mama (a song made famous by Elvis Presley), the other songs are somewhat obscure. Among them are a minor UK hit (Sugar bee), a minor USA hit (Time was) and an unlikely collaboration with the Chipmunks on the Chipmunk song.
There have been many compilations of Canned Heat's music down the years. This one was originally released in 1989, so it does not make use of the latest digital re-mastering technology but it's plenty good enough for me.
