Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

5 out of 5 stars Like being there.......2007-07-05

Have seen the play twice. This album lets me relive the experience anytime anyplace. A great piece of Rock n roll history.

5 out of 5 stars A step back in musical time.......2007-07-05

My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great music, but missing too much.......2007-07-04

I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.

It's been a long five years between releases, but Kim Richey has clearly spent the time wisely, perfecting these 10 new songs. She clearly enjoys working with different cowriters, since eight tunesmiths--including such contemporaries as Joan Osborne and Mindy Smith--collaborate with her on this superb set. Producer Giles Martin (George's son, producer of the Beatles' Love) injects a somewhat more pop-oriented approach that works wonderfully with this introspective and intricately crafted material. "Jack and Jill" colors in the missing backstory of the children's ditty with sumptuous yet frilly harpsichord, flute, kazoo, and whistling. The title track recalls a snappy Suzanne Vega, adding multi-instrumentalist Billy Mowbray's sax, mellotron, and vibes, while "Not a Love Like This," the Osborne co-write, brings reverbed guitar and a bit of retro to arguably the album's finest and most robust melody. "Pretty Picture," the only tune composed solely by the singer, is a tender, intimate love ballad sung with heartbreaking sensitivity. Richey is in sparkling voice throughout, sounding inspired by her band, the production, and especially the magnificent tunes. The laid-back, layered sound on "Another Day" and the sprightly "I Will Follow" perfectly capture the nuances of their lyrics with subtlety and class, two aspects of the singer's style that have never been compromised. There's not a weak track here, and the sharp sequencing makes this an album that ebbs and flows with Kim Richey's richly articulated vision. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

Newly signed to Vanguard Records, Kim Richey is set to release her first collection of new music in five years on July 10th. Chinese Boxes was produced by Giles Martin and recorded in London at Eastcote Studios and Air Studios Lyndhurst. Giles Martin's most recent project was The Beatles "Love" soundtrack, which he collaborated on with his father, Sir George Martin.

Chinese Boxes is a collection of 10 beautifully crafted soulful songs. The first single "Jack and Jill" (and lead track) gives the couple in the nursery rhyme a bit of a back-story - and the listener a hint of the discoveries to come. The title track tries to define a mysterious person before giving way to "Drift", a poignant love song (co-written with Mindy Smith). "The Absence of Your Company" showcases Richey's vocal vulnerability in a sparse instrumental setting while the cautionary "Another Day" highlights Kim's stunning sense of melody. The album-closing "Pretty Picture", is an intimate ballad that speaks honestly of true love.

Fans and critics alike have long awaited new music from the critically appraised singer/songwriter, whose other albums include Kim Richey (1995), Bitter Sweet (1997), Glimmer (1999), Rise (2002), and The Collection (2004).

5 out of 5 stars Kim's Golden Vibes.......2007-07-19

"This is not the time for regrets, we have seen the worst and the best", croons Kim Richey in her new CD Chinese Boxes. We haven't ever really seen the worst from Kim Richey, although I was just a tiny bit disappointed in her fourth release, Rise. That one minor flaw in her astounding catalogue of breathtaking music is easily forgiven and forgotten now.

Chinese Boxes is a lyrical pleasure with just enough of her country roots restored to please even her older fans like me. While all the songs on this CD are outstanding, there are several that actually send chills down my spine when I hear her beautiful voice, filled with hope and despair and joy and sadness. Kim's voice is a soothing, supple embrace for the soul.

This CD is HIGHLY recommended.

5 out of 5 stars More of the same = Excellence again and again........2007-07-12

There are truly more "performers" out there than one might care to shake a proverbial stick at. But there are fewer and fewer Artists making great music these days. People who can truly craft a song, and then produce it to such an extent that the final product significantly moves you. Kim Richey does just that.
Although I think it may be a disservice to even remotely classify her efforts as pop. In the conventional sense of the word anyway.
Her music is deep enough to create it's own mini genre. You'll probably find yourself, as I often do, craving Kim Richey music. There aren't a great deal of people in my music collection I can truly say that about. Sting comes to mind... maybe Peter Gabriel or Sheryl Crow. Where their production sense and musicianship, coupled with their songwriting and performances, allow you to keep the CD continuously running. Music always interesting, with solid melody, that leads you somewhere satisfying.
Every one of her albums is consistent from start to finish, and this one 's no different (Yogi Berra anyone?).
And how many albums do you own, where you really enjoy 90% or more of the music on that album? Two of the only things you'll ever find annoying about Kim Richey's music, is that there isn't enough of it, and you don't have as many people you can talk to about her material, because they're just simply not aware yet.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.......2007-07-12

Ever since I first heard Kim Richey a few years ago (on an episode of Angel), I've been collecting her CD's, delighting in each new discovery. Kim has a gorgeous voice and a talent for writing well-crafted lyrics and lovely melodies. Chinese Boxes is as good or better than any album so far, continuing on a path away from country and towards more of a pop sound (a journey she began in earnest with her 4th album, Rise). Kim is an immensely talented singer/songwriter, and Chinese Boxes is a wonderful addition to an already superb collection of work.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic Masterpiece.......2007-07-11

For Kim Richey to not be a household name after all of the superb albums she has released over the last decade has got to be one of the music business's biggest mysteries. On her fifth studio album Chinese Boxes, she continues to make a simply beautiful album full of poetic lyric writing that breathes life into her highly emotive and real songs. Her voice has never sounded better either. From cover to cover, this album is simply a masterpiece. I hope this album finally catapults her to the rich allocades she deserves--out of the box and into the light.

It's a very nice album complete with vocals and very smooth jazz in the form of a saxophone. Probably someone from his competitors cooked up some dumb idea to slam his music. He should be getting a lot of solid five stars.

I have to always give it to Kim Waters. Everything he does is always over the top.

4 out of 5 stars Kim Waters simply does it with this CD.......2007-04-11

I feel this is one of his best CD's. The tracks and his saxophone are crisp, discreet, and moving. The funky opening tune will get you in the grooves and his remakes of "The Closer I Get to You", "Inseparable", and "You are My Lady" will make you want to break out that bottle of wine with someone special. Trust me on this one. The minute I played it for the Mrs. it was on and I just wish we had a fireplace. Mello, Mello, Mello, with great sax. Don't miss this one.

1 out of 5 stars Would somebody please get this guy a live band?.......2007-04-03

Well, well...another lame CD from the "King of Drum Machines". KW is a great sax player, but I wish that he would hire a back up band instead of relying on drum machines and other electronics to produce music. This stuff sounds like karaoke music or something that my 4-year-old plays on her toy keyboard. I do, however, like his rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up", but still it would sound so much funkier if the song were performed by a live band instead of a computer. Anyway, if you like poorly produced "electonica", then you may enjoy this CD. Ohterwise, try some Sanborn, Najee, Kirk Whalum or Boney James for your "saxual" pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great album.......2007-04-26

I never liked opera before. I guess it's all about how the music is presented. The performances are top-notch, and taken from real operatic classics, but the way it is done makes it very nice to listen too. If you can only get one album of this genre, this is the one to get!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-03-16

I enjoy this different kind of opera music. Very nice and still giving you the feeling of the opera it self but in more modern way.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked.......2007-03-15

I love this CD. I have it in my car, and now know practically all of the Italian words by heart. Infectious and uplifting. Good tears and fun listening.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, vocals are severely lacking however.......2007-02-28

I love music. I especially love classical music. When I find musicians who have taken classical music and presented it in a new way, I'm always excited. EVOC has done exactly that with these tried-and-true opera classics. The orchestrations are wonderful and the musicians obviously very talented. The vocalists, however, sometimes really don't deliver. All in all, it's a fun CD and I will certainly enjoy listening to it again and again.

2 out of 5 stars Vampire Muzak.......2007-04-01

The music on the series was very effective and enjoyable, but being written in service to the story and visuals makes it a little unsatisfying with the music alone.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected.......2007-03-26

I wish it had a few more darker songs on the album but what I got is exactly what I expected it to be. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Music to remember.......2007-03-13

The opening track of the album by Darling Violetta, is absolutely fantastic. Having all the Buffy albums and knowing how thought provoking the music is from that show, I did expect more from the Angel album. But it's still good music and any fan would be happy to say they have it.

4 out of 5 stars Love the show - Love the music.......2007-01-20

It is wonderful music!!! It is as huanting as it was while watching the show!

5 out of 5 stars more please!.......2006-12-05

One of my favorite is season 5 episode 6 "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco " I wish this compilation include the guitar solo section. I am completely opposite to the one of the reviewer. I love the music part only. I find it inspiring. There's some Hans Zimmer style in it. I really dig it...quiet yet powerful. However, it start to become a little too formulated. Too much of the same thing is definitely not a good thing. Ahhh, classic tragic hero stories. I can't resist.

2 out of 5 stars Better than J. Collins "stoned-soul".......2006-08-19

With all-Due-Respect to J. Collins "stoned-soul" I think that this person has it all wrong.

Why does a performer have to have 20 years in to have, what they call, "Greatest Hits". How many performers have 20 years worth of hits ?

Perry Como (30) ? Barry Manilow (20) ?

The Beatles were'nt in for 20 years as a group but no-one will argue that they have "Greatest Hits".

I think that the J. Collins review is wrong.

A hit-is-a-hit-is-a-hit.

Kim Carnes has a unique voice, and NO ONE could have made "Bette Davis Eyes" a hit,but her.I love her voice, and reviewers who put who vocals down forget that Kim is also a GREAT songwritter. This artist was one of the HOTTEST singers in the early 80's,and had alot of hits. This CD is a nice sample of Carnes body of work.

5 out of 5 stars Remastered "Pictures" Done Right!.......2007-06-27

Prog-rock supertrio ELP didn't just turn long-deceased Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's music into rock, they turned him into a rock star. Before this came out, most people were only aware of the classical composer's music in the form of his "Night On Bald Mountain" via Disney's "Fantasia".Most people had never heard of the "Pictures At An Exhibition" suite until ELP's version and 'yes, found their way into a deeper interest in and appreciation for classical forms through this experience. What matters now is how well ELP's interpretation holds up 35 years later. This Shout! reissue, like Emerson, Lake & Palmer,Tarkus and Trilogy,is a major improvment sound quality-wise over the weak Atlantic,Victory and Rhino versions. At a reasonable price,no ELP or prog-rock fan should hesitate to upgrade with this remastered jewel.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is definitely worthwhile!.......2007-02-27

It's not often that I find a CD with one great song after another. I especially liked, "straight as the crow flies". Also, "those words we said" or "every river", "I know",etc. It is a CD you can listen to over and over and not grow tired of.

4 out of 5 stars Kim.......2007-01-19

I originally only bought this CD for one song. It was in a movie that I had watched and I like it. But after listening to it, it grew on me. She is a talented and underated singer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album,.......2006-12-12

This isn't a review of "The Collection". This is a review of Kim's 1997 release "Bittersweet". If you find yourself fighting off the "Greatest Hits" then I would highy reccomend this album. Actually, since a friend turned me on to this album, I have always felt it was full of hits. On the first listen my attention was caught and kept throughout, and I think that's saying something.

Ritchie's voice is full and distinctive;I like it alot. Tipping the scale however, are the songs and production. Everything falls nicely together. This album was odviously not a rush job.

Category? I would put her on the shelf between Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams perhaps but, who cares?

Seek and find Kim Ritchey "Bittersweet" and wear it out.

Highly reccomended

Thuis album isn't showing up in the Amazon online bin today but take it from Handyman, Kim Ritchie's "Bittersweet" is worth a search.

5 out of 5 stars ...just like the moon..........2006-10-06

kim richey is one of the most underated, gifted singer/songwriters around, and while others have seen their careers floorish in this genre (a.k.a...sarah mclaughlin, melissa etheridge, mary chapin carpenter, etc.), there are others who have fallen by the wayside (gretchen peters, just to name one off the top of my head...)...and then there are those that, have gotten 'slight' recognition, but have also been 'slighted' big time by the industry (roseanne cash, your table is waiting...)...and sadly, it is that final category that ms. richey slips into all-too well...and, i remember first seeing her many years ago at a 'Mercury' showcase (that also included Terri Clark), and this was before either one had their first record out, but i was struck by Kim immediately...and, when her debut disc finally arrived into my awaiting hands, i played that thing like nobody's business, using the song 'just like the moon' as my theme song for my radio show 'moonlight standard time'...well, several albums later, not too many sales in-between, well, we all know that story all-too well, but, i did get a chance to catch up with kimba several times afterwards, and, the last time was down in nashville, performing with the nashville symphony orchestra...she was magnificent...and her acappella version of 'my funny valentine' was a moment in time truly worth capturing...and, hopefully, one day, just like Bonnie Raitt, Kim's time will come again...until then, we'll just have to settle for these 'moments in time' and be thankful...

4 out of 5 stars The right place to start discovering Kim Richey.......2006-09-09

Well, this can be said of any "Best of" album, if you are new to an artist. But in Kim Richey's case, this is particularly true, because with Rise (2002) she departed quite dramatically from the sound of her previous albums. As a proof of what I'm saying, just scroll down the lowest rating reviews of Rise and see how many fans felt betrayed by the change. Conversely, some of those who discovered Richey thanks to Rise were disappointed by her previous efforts.
Richey's first three albums can be loosely catalogued as "country-pop", even though the production becomes "glossier" as she moves from "Kim Richey" (1995) to "Glitter" (1999). I suspect her record company of yore, Mercury Nashville, was behind this gradual but steady shift. However, since sales didn't materialize, they dumped her.
Free from fetters, Kim looked for a new sound to describe her situation and to convey her emotions. "Rise" was born. Understandably, the lyrics are bleak and biographical (when she sings "I never liked a foreman standing over me" in "Girl In A Car" I don't think she's simply talking clichés; do you agree with me, guys at Mercury Nashville?) but the music is also different. She and producer Bill Bottrell must have been tinkering in a shop with all sorts of instruments when recording Rise: melodica, birdie, vibraslap, mini-moog, bozouki, washtub bass, farfisa, wurlitzer are present, among others. The result is a singer-songwriter album with Irish and Middle-Eastern influences. How some people can find it bland, I don't know.
As you have surely understood, I'm fond of Rise, but I also enjoy some songs from her previous albums, especially her debut. For instance, "Just My Luck" and "I Know" are terrific songs, very catchy, but often the other songs in these three albums are just unmemorable.
As for the new songs in this collection, "Electric Green" is a stripped-down live version of the same title song in Rise and "Break You Down" occupies the same turf. It may be an indication that Richey will stay the course started with Rise.

To summarize: buy "The Collection", see where you stand and pick from her precedent discography accordingly.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on CD.......2007-02-26

In 2004, Rhino Handmade released the long out-of-print soundtrack "Finian's Rainbow" on CD. But because it was a limited edition, it was only available for a short term and sold at a high price.

Collector's Choice has wisely released the soundtrack at a lower price, and with fine remastering, fans of the underrated musical can finally own the soundtrack without paying too much money.

"Finian's Rainbow", directed by Francis Ford Coppola, was released in 1968, a period when the era of musicals was pretty much over. The film was not a big hit, but it's actually a beautiful film despite some creaky plot points and some outdated ideas.

What makes the film so special is the music and the performers who sing it. Fred Astaire and Petula Clark make an ideal father and daughter. Astaire is as charming as ever, and Clark truly comes into her own as a singer and actress. Although I love Clark's own recordings in English and French, this film is what made me a true fan. She glows on "Look to the Rainbow" and her duet with Don Francks on "Old Devil Moon" is both romantic and sensual, not the typical sentimental duet you see in musicals.

It's been a long time since this soundtrack has been readily available. I highly recommend this soundtrack if you are a fan of the film, and especially if you are a big Petula Clark fan.

5 out of 5 stars Love Lil' Kim..........2007-06-11

I am a HUGE fan of Lil Kim. I lost all of my cd's due to a change of address so when I purchased this, I anticpated all of the songs I used to hear. I was still intrigued by her lyricism after all these years of missing her cd. I am well pleased with this cd and La Bella Mafia and Notorious K.I.M. and The Naked Truth. Love'em ALL!

1 out of 5 stars I dont spend my money on these semen sippers!.......2007-03-26

Best album of 96. Yeah right, Jayz album was better than this and I cant stand him at all. Biggie should be gettin the credit, he the one who wrote the whole damn album. There was a few tracks with some bangin production. But I just didn't feel the lyrics and subject matter. lil kim was just a nasty no good b**** on the mic and I just wasn't feelin her. I didn't feel her then and I dont feel her now. If it wasn't for blind luck leading to success this bimbo would have been one of Luke's groupies.

2 out of 5 stars Hard Core??? Thats A New Definition (Rating 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2006-12-17

I guess my review is going to be in the minority here. I'm not going to say that Lil' Kim is a bad rapper. She just managed to pull a garbage CD. A lot of these songs don't even pass as listenable. Biggie wrote the majority of these rhymes here, so you know that they sound out of place when they come out of Lil' Kim's mouth. The lead single "No Time" with Puff Daddy was decent, and was a good start of her career, but to tell you the truth, it hardly even picks up after that on this album.

The second track "Big Momma Thing" was a banger, possibly because Jay-Z had an awesome second verse. And for some crazy reason, I have a taste for the song "We Don't Need It" even though Lil' Cease is garbage. Thats all I can think of thats good about this.

Most of this album is just filler. "Spend A Lil Doe" just didn't make sense to me. "Queen Bee" is another of these songs that I saw no significance in. Although if you're from New York somewhere, you'll think these song are the best ever. I seem to can't grasp that concept.

Also some of these songs were remixed, and possibly for a good reason. Her most popular single "Crush On You" was one of those remixed tracks. Here on the CD, someone thought it was a good idea to let Lil' Cease have all three verses. The remix it has Kim and Cease rhyming with each other, and it sounds just a little better than the origonal. If this album ever gets repressed, tell them to wipe off the origonal version and add the remix on there. Also the song "Not Tonight" was remixed and titled "Ladie's Night". The origonal song was produced by Jermaine Dupri, and it sounds okay, but you'll get tired of it after awhile. If anyone is interested, the remix would appear on the "Nothing To Lose Soundtrack" and featured Da Brat and Left Eye. Also, if you're sexually orentated, you might be able to tolerate these skits that flow throughout this CD.

Overall, this album is just average album from the '96 era. Nothing special about, unless you just love Kim. I actually enjoy Kim, especially the "La Bella Mafia" album. I just don't think this album measures up to anything I heard from the East Coast during that time. If you like to, I recommend that you check out the album for the songs I said that stood out. If you don't own this album, you're not missing much.
