John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. But selecting John Lennon as the author of those messages will make people listen and, with this collection, may keep them listening. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars Baby You Can Drive My Karma.......2007-07-19

The songs of John Lennon are a perfect compilation for a political action CD set. The artists who contributed their covers are faithful to the original music and lyrics while adding their own undercurrent trademark sound. It is good to hear these songs again. The Black Eyed Peas provide a fist pumping rendition of "Power To The People." What better time to bring this song out of hibernation. People need to feel empowered today more than ever to Save Darfur, Stop Global Warming and End the War in Iraq. Power to the people, right on!!

5 out of 5 stars really enjoyed it!!!.......2007-07-17

Wonderful music. Its nice to hear a different take on Lennon's music and the artists on this cd did a great job. I have always been one of Lennons biggest fans.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Mix of Group.......2007-07-16

It's always interesting to me to hear a musician / group that I like cover the work of another musician / group that I like. The question is - "would I buy that cover?" . I was not disappointed here. I like the songs selected but it was the groups picked to cover them that made this collection A+ for me.

I recommend this collection , but since covers are what they are, take a listen to the samples first. Like a lot of covers, people can have wildly different opinions of the right or wrong of it all.

5 out of 5 stars True to Lennon's Music with the Performers Own Stamp.......2007-07-15

A very well done CD, that is true to Lennon's music while the performing artists' contribute their own stamp. An example is U2 with a slight reggae sound early on in "Instant Karma" with The Edge's guitar making a distinct sound deeper in that contributes nicely while Bono's fading vocals singing "Shine on" at the end add another nice dimension. Although not a big Black Eye Peas fan, the Peas do an excellent job with "Power to the People" mixing chorous with an overlaid vocal. "Beautiful Boy" by Ben Harper is a touching ode to a child as it was intended and sounds beautiful as does the Postal Service on "Grow Old with Me". Lenny Kravitz does not display the demonstrative pain in his voice in "Cold Turkey" as Lennon but his vocal sounds unique and appropriate as he sounds tough, semi-sedate and powerful, depicting a man in distress. Jokob Dylan has a powerful deep vocal with Dhani Harrison with backing vocals, with standout guitar reminiscent of his dad, on "Gimme Some Truth". And another surprise, Christina Aguilera does a very impressive job on "Mother" showing that she has grown into another dimension. All the artists perform extraordinaryily well, thus it is hard to say which are the best but it is fitting that this Lennon Darfor tribute ends touchingly with one of Lennon's final compositions, "Real Love" by Regina Spektor.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD/Great Cause.......2007-07-13

Donate to a great cause and enjoy a great variety of artists covering songs by one of the most prolific songwriters of our time. The donation is paramount to humanity. The CD is gravy. Get yours today.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Opera Babes-Renaissance.......2007-05-07

I am sorry to say that I was extremely disappointed in the new album by the Opera Babes. I had really been looking forward to it's release but I had a hard time relating this to their first really great album. It is almost like a different group.

      5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2007-02-27

I'm so glad to see the OperaBabes back in business and I feel compelled to add in my own two cents after seeing so many disappointed reviews. If there's one thing we can all agree on, it must be that OperaBabes listeners come from areas of many backgrounds, tastes, and preferences. It seems this ablum is clarifying their position, so if you are a casual fan I urge you to pick this up and see if it's for you. Even people who aren't partial to the new style and collection will find at least one song to treasure, and those who are like me and wanted more "new and different" will be thoroughly pleased. The first song along is worth the price of the CD in my opinion - it's simply enchanting.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars: Not bad but certainly could have been better.......2007-02-26

I'm not a big fan of opera music. I find a lot of it too bombastic for my ears. What little opera music I do listen to is a mixture of pop and opera. Opera Babes help make opera music more palatable to those listeners who are not really opera fans. Their first cd "Beyond Imagination" was pretty good but it also predictable. When classical crossover was quite popular with me back in 2002 - 2003, I often hear the same songs they had on their debut cd on other albums in that genre. Five years later, the women return with their follow up "Renaissance" which is available as an import only.

I have to admit I found "Renaissance" to be rather lackluster on the initial listen. The songs are a little more obscure which I have to give the women for choosing songs that haven't been recorded by Celtic Woman, Il Divo, and Josh Groban. The first two songs on "Renaissance" did not do anything for me. I found them rather dull. As much as I hate "Send in the Clowns", I actually enjoyed Opera Babes' version. After "Send in the Clowns" the album actually improves quite a bit. Karen and Rebecca for the most part have definitely refined their vocals for the album. Their vocals are more restrained than on "Beyond Imagination" although there were a couple of tracks on "Renaissance" when I thought I was listening to cats in heat.

The more I have listened to "Renaissance", the more the album has grown on me. It is flawed but I like it to give the album 3.5 stars in my book. I just hope the women pick better material for the next album because I really do enjoy their music.

3 out of 5 stars Good Singing That's About it........2007-01-11

I liked the song choices on the first album better but the sound and the girls singing is much better on this one. Oh well, maybe they'll get both right on the next album.

      3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-06-13

I had really been looking forward to the Opera Babes new release. Unfortunately, it's quite disappointing. If you want music to fall asleep to, this would fit the bill. Except for Bailero which is so distorted from the original Canteloube, to be unrecognizable. The voices are still beautiful, but the album is quite uninspiring.

      5 out of 5 stars what a unique album.......2006-12-09

This is an album in which every song is a gem and completely unique. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes electronica and/or old sci-fi films, as the sounds in the music are reminiscent of.

      5 out of 5 stars what a great find.......2006-03-19

It's difficult to find an album in which almost every song is really something. I heard "Hey Mrs" and was sold right from the off. While not really sounding anything like Bent they have that same offbeat wonderfulness, funky moogy sounds and beautiful strings. A strange, lovely, quirky album.

5 out of 5 stars Great great find.......2006-02-11

I would easily recommend this album to anyone interested in the strange. It's a great album!!! Kinda hard to describe. Sounds a little like Air, but not. It kinda reminds me of some of Mike Pattons works, with the quirky lyrics and scary pop sound of some of the songs.

Anyways, definitely worth picking up....if perhaps somewhere else for a bit less.....

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, original music.......2005-09-09

This is a very creative, beautiful, at times spooky album. It defies genres. However, if you are going to spend $30 on it (which, IMHO, is worth it for this!) try to find the original release from Dharma records - it has 15 tracks instead of 12 (I wonder why they decided to cut 3 tracks out?) and the cover art is much better!

      5 out of 5 stars I was obsessed..........2005-09-03

When I first heard a track from this CD, it was on the designer Christian LaCroix's website as background music for his Printemps/Ete 2005 Haute Couture collection. I became obsessed with the song ("These are Our Children") and after many futile attempts to find the origins with shards of lyrics through Google, I brushed off my high school/tourist French and e-mailed the creators of the website to find out WHO was singing this song!! I had to have it.

They were kind enough to eventually send me all of the info. Took me a couple of e-mails, though. But hey! I LOVE THE WHOLE CD--I downloaded it from iTunes on the strength of just that one song. I am delighted by the quirky, moody songs in particular. Goes great with paint-by-number pictures and other kitsch. A tip...it only costs about $10 bucks to download from iTunes. I guess you avoid the whole "IMPORT" concept that way...

          5 out of 5 stars Cool Music.......2007-03-10

Its a pity we havnt seen more from Betty Boo over the years as i like her style of music. There is something flamboyant about her,and the way her songs are constructed are clever.
So now we have Betty Boo and Alex James from Blur....hmmmmm interesting concept.
I found this CD great to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars The Best OPO of 2006.......2006-09-06

What a terrific return for Betty Boo! I'd buy this just to support the efforts to get the full CD released! But the video and MP3 versions are pretty readily available on the Internet if you want to download and play and play and play. Personally, I find the video as addictive as anything.

3 out of 5 stars catchy tune from Miss Betty Boo.......2006-06-06

I have to say I am a big fan of Betty Boo aka Alison Clark, and was hoping to see her release some new tunes, and load and behold I found Wig Wam....its a catchy tune and after listening to it a few times I found my self head bopping to this track, fun stuff it is and can't wait to hear the whole album, now if only Amazon.com would do a better listing , fore I find out there is a rock band called WigWam....no album covers, no info...whats the deal???? Anyways if you like Betty Boo, get this cd.

1 out of 5 stars WORST CD I HAVE EVER PURCHASED BAR NONE!!!.......2004-12-17

This is awful stuff. I love all sorts of music and have many fine performances of Beatle covers. The arrangements on this CD, such as they are (if you can even call them arrangements),sound as though they were done by a demented monk. The music starts and stops for no apparent reason. Do not buy this unless you want to punish yourself...it is not only depressing but annoying, how did this get released? I have never listened to something so poorly performed, John Lennon would roll over in his grave if he heard this. If the rest of the the String Quartets efforts are of this caliber, I think they should be hung with the strings of their own instuments and good riddence! Once again, don't buy this unless you really want to make yourself ill...

            5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2003-03-20

These are great String covers, they chose the songs well. Sadly, there's very little material on here (at least it feels like it). If only they filled the disc with classic Lennon songs.
