Whoopi Goldberg has a lot of talents, but singing is not one of them. Hearing her massacre Motown classics like "Dancing in the Street," "Ball of Confusion" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in her flat, dull voice on this soundtrack album would be harmless if a whole generation weren't being introduced to these songs through her clumsy performances. Several choirs turn in lackluster performances of gospel numbers. The disc's one redeeming moment is Aretha Franklin's overpowering delivery of "A Deeper Love," written and produced by C+C Music Factory. --Geoffrey Himes

Great Soundtrack.......2007-06-16

I remember when this movie first came out. My brother rented it and let me watch with him. I watched it like 2 more times before he had to take it back. I then bought the movie and it is still one of my favorite movies today. I like the movie soo much because of the music. I had the soundtrack on a cassette tape and I use to listen to it all the time in my portable tape player (that seems like ages ago) and I'm only 21! Lol! Anyways this is a great album to listen to...especially when you love to sing like I do!!

Forget the "official" review. The "joyful, joyful" finale alone is worth the price of this soundtrack all by itself! It truly captures the joy that should ALWAYS be the centerpiece of the Christian life.

ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS EVER.......2006-01-29

Please everybody ignores Amazon's review of this album. I am 16 years old, and I was three years old when this movie and soundtrack came out. And at an early age this entire project(movie and soundtrack) gave me a love of music, which is why I like to sing now and introduced me to quality music and great classics, and not like the mess that we hear today. So for anybody who has contemplated bying this project, listen if everytime you watch the movie, you cant help to sing along with them, them you need to purchase this album. Because it will certainly bless you.

An updated read on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Gil Junger's 10 Things I Hate About You is a teen comedy about two sisters on opposite ends of the social spectrum: one is pretty and popular, the older sister is bitter and vengeful. Family rules dictate that the younger sibling can't date until the older one has. You see where this is going. The soundtrack features Letters to Cleo in a '70s mood covering Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" and Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind." Sweden's Cardigans include a rare B-side, "War." George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," Joan Armatrading's "The Weakness in Me," and Madness's "Wings of a Dove" still sound fresh. Totally recomendable for sparetime listening good music. I like the song Your Winter performed by Sister Hazel, is terrific.
By the way, the movie is great too. Julie Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Larisa Oleynik plays a funny characters.

Great Soundtrack for a GREAT movie.......2006-12-26

I loved 10 Things I Hate About You, and the music plays such an important role in the movie, so I got the soundtrack and I love it. While many are complaining that a lot of songs are missing I don't think they know that it is impossible to put EVERY song on the album. Letters to Cleo is a great band and the songs weren't available on iTunes so this was great. I TOTALLY recommend this soundtrack and the movie.

I have to believe the chief reason for picking up this album is to get the songs that the nuns sing in "Sister Act." The appeal here is what I think of as the Joe Piscopo approach to singing songs when he played Frank Sinatra on "Saturday Night Love." Piscopo would either take a regular Frank Sinatra hit (e.g., "Witchcraft") and turn it into a heavy metal/rock song, or he would take a popular rock song (e.g., Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run") and do it in Sinatra's classic saloon style. That is essentially what we have here when the nuns led by Sister Delores take a "traditional" church song such as "Hail Holy Queen" and do it R&B style or when they take a song like "I Will Follow Him" and turn the opening into a hymn of devotion. In case you do not read the notes, Andrea Robinson is the soloist who does the power solos in grand Marni Nixon style for Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena).

The bad news is that they cannot fill up a complete album of such songs, even if you throw the songs from "Sister Act 2" into the mix as well, so there are two additional components to this soundtrack. First there are original classic R&B songs from the likes of Etta James ("Roll With Me Henry"), Fontella Bass ("Rescue Me"), and Dee Dee Sharp ("Gravy"). Then there are a couple of instrumental tracks written by Marc Shaiman which are really around just to fill up the album. The best of that bunch is "Getting into the Habit," but even that one is not going to stand up against even the weakest of the singing tracks (which would be "My God," which is cute lyrically but not as much fun as the other "covers" in terms of the harmonious singing raising the rafters).

The goal here is to be able to listen to the songs without having to watch the movie, so that you can sing along with the ladies in the car or while doing work around the house. These are infectious versions of these songs and the idea of investing secular pop songs with religious fervor is rather appealing. Besides, not only do you have Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Najimy singing, but also the late great Mary Wickes. For the record, the other ladies of the choir are Ellen Albertini Dow, Carmen Zapata, Pat Crawford Brown, Prudence Wright Holmes, Georgia Creighton, Susan Johnson, Ruth Kobart, Susan Browning, Darlene Koldenhoven, Sheri Izzard, Edith Diaz and Beth Fowler (yes, the one you see signing in the movie are the ones actually doing the singing on the soundtrack, which I also think is pretty neat).

THE Zimmer Powerhouse Album.......2006-12-16

Ok, so I've been collecting Zimmer and countless other classical-film score composers since I was 8. This is definately one of Zimmer's defining momtents as a composer. The themes and orchestrations presented here are just mind blowing, and totally great.

Buy if you are a fan of Zimmer, or muscular score music.

Zimmer's score for Crimson Tide is, in my opinion, one of the more overrated scores that has been written in the last 20 years. This score is continually lauded by music lovers as powerful, inspiring, and exciting. I would apply those adjectives to the theme of the film (heard in the first, fourth, and fifth tracks on the album) but to little else in the score. The other problem here is that the tracks are so long that to hear the great theme, you'll need to listen to at least 10 minutes of music that is adequate at best, and downright boring at worst. When I first got this score years ago I would have given it 5 stars, but I think I was being influenced by what everyone else was saying about it. Now that I've had it a while and listened to it scores of times I have to say that other than the 2 minutes of brilliant theme heard 3 times in this score, there is little else for me to recommend in it. The one possible exception is the hymn on the album heard twice--it's beautifully sung, though the lyrics are unintelligible. That I would still give something three stars, though, even though I really only enjoy 6 minutes of the album, says something about what a great theme this one has. Those familiar with Pirates of the Carribean will notice that one of its theme is a shameful replay of part of the theme from this film.

Domingo comes off as the more solid performer, and his voice is in far better shape than the other two. Yo tenia el Cd de este concierto, pero sin duda el DVD presenta la realidad, lo sublime de este evento, porque ademas de ver las interpretaciones, trae varios puntos y canciones extras. Carreras creo que esta bien, saca la tarea. Placido Domingo en Amor vida de mi vida, logra llevar el concierto a su punto mas alto en ese momento, punto superado unicamente por Pavarotti en Nessum Dorma. Pavarotti como siempre sublime como dije en Nessum Dorma, Ave maria y en los popurris. La calidad del DVD es genial, con full screen y sonido digital. Otro punto buenisimo es la aparicion de Frank Sinatra en la cancion My way y de otras luminarias del cine y la política. Espero que este comentario sirva de ayuda para aquellos que quieran este DVD.

The Three Tenors has/have become a cottage industry, churning out one CD after another for every imaginable event and in every combination. This does not mean that the results are necessarily inferior but it does imply a commercial, layman's approach. And maybe this is better - spreading the joys of fine music to the masses. After all, where besides figure skating and cartoons do most people have a chance to even hear opera?

This event, like the first one in Rome, has a magnificent setting but, like Rome, the show was marketed mainly to the American audience. They still include the dreadful "Maria" with the hilarious pronunciation and even added "With a Song In My Heart" (or, as Carreras is wont to sing, "Weeth a Soeeng een My Haht"). Though some may deride the choice of encores, they were almost perfect. The Three Tenors, despite their prior celebrity, are creations of our culture of entertainment in ways that Caruso could only dream about.

Synopsis: Carreras stands out, Domingo substitutes volume for quality and Pavarotti soars when he doesn't have to.

Not what I thought it was going to be. I like only about 4 of the 20+ tracks on this CD. I shoudl have just bought the DVD instead and actually watched them perform. Much, much more entertaining.

Last Encore of songs missing off C.D........2002-02-06

The Three Tenors are my absolute favourite singers. The 1994 Concert was undoubtedly their best in my view. I taped this live concert from the television, and have played and played and played it!! I also taped it on a cassette, however, when I bought the C.D. I was really disappointed that they did not include the last set of encore songs, which included O Sole a Mio (don't know if I've spelt that correctly), where Placido and Jose try and outdo Luciano!! It received such a fantastic reception from the crowd, (one of the many standing ovations), and really showed how much the Three Tenors seemed to enjoy performing the concert. How come this was not included? I don't know if it was on the Video because I play my own.

A Music Score Benchmark.......2006-07-15

This soundtrack is one of my continuing favorites. I tell you that for film scores, this one sets the bar pretty high. Since this soundtrack was released, I have personally used this one as the benchmark test for any new stereo equipment I have purchased. The spectrum of sound included, in the second track in particular, will test the speakers of a new sound system better than many test disks that I've seen. The sound is able to pull you into your mental review of the film more effectively than most other soundtracks out there, with certain exceptions of course. This soundtrack is overall that which many scores fail to be, a musical painting of the film, not just filler music. This is a memorable disk for a memorable film.

Good sound, but themes are redundant.......2005-08-06

I enjoy this CD very much. The music has a sweeping charm and romantisicm to it. My only problem is that this score pretty much consists of two themes, the Rocketeer Theme and Jenny's theme, played over and over again. There's nothing wrong with the two themes, on the contrary they are both very enjoyable, but the CD simply needs more variety.

On a different note, the Cole Porter songs are wonderful for anyone who enjoys his music, and the singer has a sultry voice that's perfect for the selection.

Heroic images.......2004-10-16

Superman and Batman two heroes who get all the movies, toys, cartoons, etc... however with the Rocketeer we can start a new trend. Th Music by Horner fits right in with Superman by Mr. Williams and surpasses Mr. Elfman's work in Batman. on my Mix for heroes I included the Rocketeer as a tune for the golden Age Green lantern The Current GL has the Last Starfighter The Rocketeer is a thrilling adventure of the likes we just dont see any more The Music by Mr. Horner frames it and matches the spirit of it all so perfectly. you could have the worst day of your life and yet feel like a million bucks after listening to this sweeping score!

Excellent Score! One of Horner's best........2004-10-09

Since he wrote the score for Braveheart and won an Oscar for Titanic, James Horner has been among the most disappointing of film composers. His works have been highly derivative and this often makes the listener deride the composer for his lack of so-called talent. The Rocketeer proves te depth of Mr. Horner's talent. It's sweeping melodic main theme is a perfect counterpoint to the theme of flight running throughout the movie. His love theme is a classic old fashioned melody that perfectly fits with the movie and his use of the piano to subtly bring out the movie is totally fantastic. The Rocketeer is among the best of James Horner's works and is one of his most enjoyable scores. His work is truly a masterpiece. While the movie's special effects may seem dated, Horner's score is immortal and shows just how beautiful his music is when he writes original music.

The Rocketeer: Another great James Horner score.......2003-08-02

After "Krull" this is my favourite James Horner score. The main theme is brilliant and there is a good balance between action music and slow music. Some tracks contain the "suspense/bass motif" from "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan". Horner uses this motif often in his work, I like that.
My favourite track is "The Flying Circus", a fantastic action cue. (The bass-trombone is great!!)
The track "Jenny" is very beautiful, and one of Horner's best love-themes ever.
There are also two jazzy songs on the album. I think they are very good.
If you are a fan of James Horner, or you like Star Trek II, you might enjoy this cd very much.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Best "Sing Sing Sing" ever.......2007-03-09

This soundtrack has the single best version of Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing" I've ever heard -- as well done as the original, and, with the benefit of modern recording equipment, much easier to listen to. That song alone was worth the price of the album for me.

Swing me!.......2006-11-10

Of course, 'Sing Sing Sing' is a classic, and it is well played. My other favorite is 'Bei Mir Bis Du Schoen', for sentimental reasons, but it is well sung and makes a great dance. The other tracks are typical soundtrack music to me. They sound fine, but I really got the CD just for the two songs mentioned.

Swing, Swing, Swing..........2006-04-11

SWING KIDS is a fine but obscure movie about young nonconformists in prewar Nazi Germany who rebel against their authoritarian society by indulging in Swing music and dance clubs. Derided by the Nazis as "decadent", "Black" and "Jewish," Swing was banned, and it's adherents were forcibly conscripted, arrested, tortured, and sent to concentration camps. In SWING KIDS, the irresistible pressures of conformity ratchet apart the relationship between three best friends. Sad, yet ultimately defiant, SWING KIDS is a fascinating look at ordinary day-to-day life in National Socialist Germany.

Fortunately, "sad" is not a word that can be applied to the soundtrack, which is rife with Swing classics from Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, and others. Some of the records are wonderfully archaic scratchy originals. Others are new orchestrations done for the film.

The downside to this CD is James Horner's film orchestrations which are mostly not Swing, and manage to interrupt the party just as it settles into its groove. It's unfair to complain: After all, this is a movie soundtrack, the guy who wrote the original music for the movie should be on it, and when he's in Swing, he's got that Thing. But having to listen to a cheery little minor key string piece titled "Arvid Beaten" in between "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" and "Jumping At The Woodside" is really disconcerting. Like the soundtrack to YELLOW SUBMARINE, the film orchestrations should have been gathered together on the "B" side (a good argument to bring back the 33.3 record). For myself, I just hit the "Track Forward" button.

Fortunately, the Swing more than outweighs Horner's minor musical distractions. This should have been a five star recording, and could have been a three star recording. I'm giving it four stars. The Swing is splendid.

Dance Dance Dance!.......2005-07-05

Swing Kids is one hellouva cd and one hellouva soundtrack. It represents old swing titles (Swingtime in the rockies, Flat Floot Floogie and Goodnight My Love by Benny Goodman, It Don't Mean A Thing by Billy Banks) few score numbers (Nothing To Report, The Letter, Arvid Beaten, Training For Utopia, Ashes, The Bismarck and Swing Heil composed by James Horner) and few remakes of old swing classics recorded for the movie (Sing Sing Sing, orig. Benny Goodman, Shout and Feel It, orig. by Count Basie, Daphne, orig. by Django Reinhardt, medley Life Goes to a Party/Jumpin' at the Woodside, and fabulous Bei Mir Bist du Schön by Janis Siegel). Sound quality is great and music danceable. I highly recommend this record.

Swing, kids!!!.......2004-05-12

Living in Germany during World War II, but don't necessarily agree with the dictatorship? Well geez, let's rebel by dancing. The Swing Kid movement, as portrayed by this movie, was rather bizarre, considering that they were risking their lives and showing it by dancing the night away. However, the music is light, bouncy and rather catchy, considering many of the tunes on this CD are catchy and jazz standards. One of the downfalls however, is that this engergetic music is paired up with what is often over-dramatic and sullen classical music, to supplement the storyline (you didn't think Hitler would let these rebels have their way, did you?). But when you're in the dancing mood, this soundtrack is definitely well worth it, and if you love jazz music, please do go get this. Just be sure to skip the dreaded, down-tempo classical pieces.

It seems worth noting that I really disliked the movie, "Emma." I consider it to be nothing more than a modern-day soap opera in fancy clothing with more intelligent dialogue. Other than the "badly done, Emma, badly done" scene, I have no interest in watching the film again.

The soundtrack is another story. The music, when thankfully removed from the tedious movie, is absolutely delightful. I enjoy listening to it with some regularity, as it provides for most pleasant background music when I'm working or reading. I'm not familiar enough with the history of the music to know if it appropriate for the period during which the movie takes place, but it stands on its own.

My only complaint about the soundtrack is its somewhat repetitive nature. It seems as if the composer ran out of original themes and chose to revisit the same ones over and over again. Thankfully, those themes are some of the most charming, so it is still pleasant to hear. Nonetheless, I would have liked less repetition.

In any case, this soundtrack far exceeds the mediocrity of the movie, and I enjoy listening to it frequently

"Emma" is an extrodianary motion picture. I could watch it over and over again. My favorite tracks are probably "main Titles" "Proposal" and "End Credits." Ms Portman did an excellent job connecting the theme of the film to the music.

Classic place in your soundtrack library.......2006-01-01

If you enjoy classical music soundtracks, purchase this cd. "Main Titles" and "The Dance" are really worth the purchase, as are the sweetly and humorously simple "Mrs. Elton's Visit" and "Sewing and Archery". Of course, "Westin's Christmas Party" now has a place in our Christmas collection.

I love the subtle humor of this film and the soundtrack played to this superbly....with violins and clarinets playing key roles in the production....Rachel Portman goes from symphonic to quartet sounds fluidly to fit with the storyline of each scene.

I buy soundtracks when I really love a movie and this one was not a disappointment. This music holds up independently from the film. So many soundtracks have a grandiose overture effect that is much too heavy to enjoy without the visuals of the film. They are much better fading in and out with the action. This soundtrack stands alone and is peaceful, sweet, light...tender.

Like I said, if you enjoy classical music soundtracks, add this to your library; you'll not be disappointed.

These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.

it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.


With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.


The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.

I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.

Great Film Music.......2007-03-09

This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.

Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17

It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).
