5 out of 5 stars Emotion is Dead, but this album is alive and kickin'.......2007-02-15

Juliana Theory, an obscure band in an obscure genre, builds much of its well deserved acclaim on this very album. Well written instrumentals, such as Emotion is Dead Parts 1 and 2, punctuate well written songs with well written riveting lyrics. "Don't Push Love Away" demonstrates well constructed harmonies that the musicians skillfully persist throughout the album and make for a full-spectrum music experience.

5 out of 5 stars Emo tion is dead. Sad but true.......2005-09-24

I love this album so much. TJT you started everything in 98 for me. I loved "August in Bethany" off "Understand This Is Not A Dream" so I bought this album. I was the only one in Lowell listening to EMO. Now "Emo is dead" I blame warped tour. All these new Emo/Screamo bands suck that's why I'm going back to where I started, with this album. I don't like emo now, but this one's a keeper. I started a band because of this album, remembered the words to every single track and pretty much introduced emo to fellow Lowellians. This is the album I'd take if I was stranded on a desert island. Key tracks; If I told you this was killing me would you stop,Into the dark,Don't push love away, Were at the top of the world, You always say goodnight, goodnight, This is your life, and Emotion is dead.

5 out of 5 stars Your ears will thank you........2005-09-07

I try to keep an open mind about all genres of music. Often times it seems like all emo rock sounds the same, but this album is on the verge of creating its own. The songs are interesting and unique. It becomes very clear early on that the makers of this album are NOT the airheads from your french class who made a band and fluked something special. These cowboys are intelligent. Actually, real cowboys don't exist anymore, except eh. lost my train of thought (damn you weed DAMN YOU)If nothing else, the lyrics will keep you transfixed. So buy the album.. and if you don't like it, give it to your uncle or something.

It's true that these guys take themselves a bit too seriously for the kind of music they play, and the songs on this album belong more on commercial radio than in the indie scene, but if you can get past that you can appreciate this album for what it is. It's either above or beneath all the emo garbage it's associated with, depending on your perspective. If you're hung up on underground cred, you'll consider it beneath, if you're a genuine unpretentious music lover you will have no trouble accepting the melodic pop brilliance this album has to offer. Tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, and 11 are nothing less than amazing. They're the absolute pinnacle of contemporary pop-rock songwriting. If I hadn't heard them with my own ears I'd think it was impossible to write songs this good. Something Isn't Right Here is a cringeworthy boy-band type song that I really can't stand, and there are a couple other weak songs, but overall this is still a must-own album for anyone who enjoys catchy pop music to any extent.

1 out of 5 stars bland pop attempting to pass along as "emo".......2005-02-07

It's a wonder how The Juliana Theory was ever labelled as "emo", as the music is more of a power-pop sound, and 'You Always Say Goodnight, Goodnight' is obviously either a rip-off or an homage to Pink Floyd. This album does very much have the sound of a boy band going alternative/rock. When I listen to it these days, I'm not sure how it got into the regular playlist at the college radio station I have previously deejayed at, as it seems this album could only truly appeal to 15 year old girls and boys with serious break-up issues. It's dreary, long, drawn-out and a lot of the songs are similar. However, I must admit the lyrics to 'If I Told you This Was Killing Me, Would You Stop?" are a worthy read. 'Emotion is Dead Pt II' at least tries to pull off a re-mix sound, with a palm-muted funk guitar rhythm, piano, and keyboard effects, not much unlike a Chemical Brothers song. Otherwise I've found myself bored and sleepy after listening to this album.

1 out of 5 stars maurice jarre: the emotion and the strength.......2005-01-29

I am sure that anyone reading this review will agree with me on the fact that m. Jarre's status as a composer is beyond legend. What a pure genius. HOWEVER, I simply have to write this review to warn his fans what a huge disappointment this album is. Frist, the quality of the recording is tinny and insipid [I am not some picky audiophile, but live albums usually leave a lot to be desired]. Most important is that the arrangements and their performance by this orchestra is just totally unsatisfying. Lets face it, what we all love about Jarre is the power of his music in relationship to the films for which it was done. We want the evocative quality of the real scores, pretty much as they were for the films. You wont find it in this album[close your eyes and think of your favorite film score. You can hear it in your mind easily. now imagine hearing an album where the arrangement of it that you hear bears little relationship to what you lovingly remember. Thats the reason for my profound dissatisfaction]... So just buy the 'real' soundtracks and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars "Ageless Composer..Legendary Icon Extraordinaire..Jarre".......2002-01-21

Highly skilled composer one of the "Old Guard" film scoring Giants...belongs to a very exclusive club of longivity...creating some of the most brilliant scores ever to grace filmland...Mauice Jarre can write music for any story-line...from any country in the world...one who fits the bill of legendary icon in his most worthy profession...FILM COMPOSER EXTRAORDINAIRE!

Not being one so taken with LIVE RECORDINGS, but this 2-CD-Set has much merit, quality and enjoyment, all music composed and yes, conducted by MAURICE JARRE, with very capable musical organizations~ BBC Concert Orchestra,Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, how's that for a Grand Slam line up...but let's see what musical scores make the grade of "stand outs" and the ever popular "highlights".

Starting with the stand outs ~ "A PASSAGE TO INDIA"(1984), string section opens with counterpoints from percussion, giving you a sense of traveling through India, brass takes over with a main theme, gives the ten minute Suite body---"FATAL ATTRACTION" (1987), solo piano sends chills through your memories of the story line, almost textures of "Classical Jazz", blending eerie strings with muted brass joining in for substance, reminds me of some of 1940's murder mysteries with Bogart or Mitchum---"RYAN'S DAUGHTER"(1970), haunting theme with melodic overtones, give way to the percussion section, moving within the unforgettable melody always stumping the music fans, where have I heard this before?

What you've all been waiting for...the HIGHLIGHTS ~ "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"(1962), exceptional score for this stunning film, won an Oscar for "Best Original Score 1962", percussion and brass draws you into the desert, living each passage from an unforgettable arrangement that sits high on the composers list on his achievements---but the one everyone remembers for orchestration, originality and lasting impression of "Classic Soundtracks" is "DR, ZHIVAGO"(1965), sweeping Russian melodies with poignant blends of the windwood sections, listen as the counterpoints abound reeking with passion as the love of two women for one man, the Main Theme is probably one of the most recognizable in the world.

Milan Records has given us an additonal score "SUNSHINE"(1999), a beautiful haunting score that has Jarre's signature in place, the chorus gives off a heavenly sound of "Pure Harmony", counter balanced by the orchestration, gotta love it!
