You pretty much know what to expect from a John Mellencamp album at this point in time, and Cuttin' Heads certainly won't disappoint the Midwest rock troubadour's diehard fans. In fact, Mellencamp's 18th album is arguably his most engaging, and coincidentally timely, since 1989's Big Daddy. "Peaceful World," a beautiful folk-rocker featuring guest vocalist India Arie, takes on a more poignant and ironic tone in light of the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Public Enemy's Chuck D contributes a fabulous rap on the opening title track, which, like "Peaceful World," addresses American racism. Elsewhere, Mellencamp offers up typical fare, including several love tunes (Trisha Yearwood duets on "Deep Blue Heart"), the calypso-like "Crazy Island," and a lyric on "Women Seem" that's ornery enough to still merit the Little Bastard nickname he once gave himself. It's not Scarecrow, but it's still a fine effort. --Bill Holdship

1 out of 5 stars Nothing To Get Excited About.......2007-02-08

Another let down from the King of Rock and Roll - Nothing To Get Excited About - Also, "Women Seem" was the worst Mellencamp concert song bar none

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed!.......2006-04-25

I bought this for 3 Euros. Normally I would listen to his stuff first before buying because he can be very hit and miss in my opinion. Big Daddy was a hit for me, a very strong album, not one bad track, 5 stars, but this one is a miss. I was also disappointed with "Human wheels". "Trouble no more" was okay.

2 out of 5 stars Politics again.......2005-08-28

I love Mellancamp and especially Mr. Happy Go Lucky. That said, like so many artists, Mr. Mellancamp is at his worst when he goes political. It's not the politics that I object to, it's the way the politics seem to generally result in lackluster music. Too ernest, too strident, too self indulgent and too rightous. There is great political music of course, but not here.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh........2004-04-05

This CD opens with what might just be the best John Mellencamp song ever, "Cuttin' Heads." Loud, raucous and brilliant, (and with guest vocalist Chuck D), it expertly combines elements of Pop, Rock, Delta Blues and Rap into an amalgamation that shocks, entertains, and inspires all at the same time. It's a remarkable piece of work.

If only the rest of this CD were as good.

Unfortunately, it's not. Mellencamp has never sounded less inspired (or in some cases, more insipid). "Crazy Island" sounds like "Jimmy Buffett meets Jackson Browne", with the worst tendencies of both (really...if you want to hear "Pink Houses," put on "Pink Houses"). "Women Seem" tries to be ironic and funny, but it just falls flat. In fact, with the exception of the opening and closing tracks, the whole CD falls flat. John sounds like he's coasting here.

"Cuttin' Heads"--the song--deserves 10 stars. The rest of this disappointment seems headed for the cutout bin. A bloody shame, too, because Mellencamp is clearly capable of much much more.

5 out of 5 stars Cuttin' Heads.......2003-04-09

This is a new Cd by one of the best singers ever. It's 2nd song became a minor hit in 2001.
Cuttin Heads'- Good song about racism. I do not like the ending with the rap by Chuck D. I hate rap, but I understand what he is trying to do but he should have used a soul singer (Lilke Lionel Ritchie) or something.
Peacful World- Minor Hit in 2001. Duet with India Arie. a very good song.
Deep Blue Heart- Duet with Trisha Yearwood. A country-pop song kinda in the style of Elvis' late '70s music (Moody Blue).
Crazy Island- Very Catchy tune with a great melody and an acoustic guitar part that should be easy to play.
Just Like You- Great, but not the best on CD
The Same Way I Do- Soul-blues song. Very good.
Women Seem- One of the best on the CD. Guitar part similar to that of Crazy Island.
Worn Out Nervous Condition- Sounds like it could have came off his Big Daddy album
Shy- If this was recorded in the '70s it would be a #1 hit.
In Our Lives- Best on album.
John has a new cd called Trouble No More coming out May 20th 2003.

      4 out of 5 stars Too funky?.......2002-12-06

I can agree with one point the music fan from Forest Park made, if for entirely different reasons. "This is not the best Lurrie Bell record by far." Hopefully, that record is about 30 years in the future. However, this is another in a long line of great recordings by Lurrie. As for the, "heavy handed, slick production," and, "over funky band," they are both courtesy of Willie "Vamp" Samuels who can also be heard playing bass on the excellent album, "Live Around the World: The Best of Junior Wells." I guess Junior liked over-funky music too.
Production quality on this album is exactly what it should be. Lurrie is prominently mixed without overpowering the band. He bends and pops the strings until the guitar just rings. Like all great musicians he seems to make his music flow effortlessly despite the fact it is born of a lifetime of study. A lifetime spent learning at the feet of blues giants. One of whom happens to be his father, Carey Bell. A man who could be chisled onto the blues harp Mt. Rushmore. His playing on the song, "Call Me on the Phone," is a highlight of the album. He and Lurrie have the old fire going. Really, they're just showing off. They both have such command of their instruments they can dance circles around most other musicians. Another highlight is the horn arrangement on, "I'll Be Your .44." The horn section pulls you through the song making it end way too quickly.
My advice is to buy this album. You'll have it in your collection eventually anyway. This guy is Magic Sam, he's Earl Hooker. A legend earned, not marketed.
By all means, check out his Delmark recordings. They'll provide additional evidence Lurrie Bell is without equal on guitar. His vision is unique in a world cookie-cutter McMusic. If he were better at self-promotion perhaps more people would know he's Chicago's best guitarist.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best Lurrie Bell.......2001-03-13

This is not the best Lurrie Bell record, by far. The heavy-handed, slick production and over-funky band really gets in the way of what Lurrie does best, which is play straight-ahead blues guitar. Check out his releases on Delmark instead...

      5 out of 5 stars Classic Lurrie.......2005-10-13

I'll come back sometime and give this album a proper review but you are a fool if you do not buy this CD. This is the album that puts Lurrie up there with the "bluesmen." You could make that same argument about any of his recordings really, but this album, for me, is the one that makes him shine.

His guitar is all 3 Kings, Earl Hooker, Magic Sam and a few others as well. His style is that distinctive. His singing has never sounded better.

As we lose a Gatemouth, Little Milton, Detroit Junior, or R.L. Burnside and I'm sure too many others I don't know about, it is important to know the blues is still capable of producing "masters" and it is no exxageration to call Lurrie a master.
