John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V).......2007-06-21

product: Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V), included as bonus disc in Episode III soundtrack.

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

5 out of 5 stars John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

2 out of 5 stars Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Union 13 is a very good punk band that may be considered hardcore but nevertheless proves with this CD that they are only getting better. "The Game" and "Beyond the System" are 2 of my favorite tracks. "Soledad" is another one of my favorites even though it is Spanish so some may not understand, yet it is a very good song. The music is very good and fast paced on most songs and the vocals are very fast. It is a very good CD. I would also recommend AFI. They are one of the best punk bands.

4 out of 5 stars Game & Slang.......2005-08-25

Loyalty And Betrayal is album number seven (if I'm not mistaken) for the Bay's Ambassador, E-40. Very few emcees / rappers have released this many albums, maintained street credibility, and been such an influence on slang and still takes it in stride as 40 has. As the title track maximize the stop and go flow to unmatched heights. The brother and sister combination of hustling on "Lace Me Up" featuring Suga T. is a simple track that emphasizes game and nothing but. "Sinister Mob" featuring Nate Dogg is a slow gangster groove where Nate almost stole the show with his singing / rap flow. For the mainstream appeal, "Nah, Nah..." featuring Nate Dogg still has a rough edge to it. Upbeat and more of a disco / 70's tune blended well with the expensive taste of "Pop Ya Collar" featuring B-Legit & D-Shot. The West Coast connection between 40 Fonzarelli and Ice Cube is just a classic collaboration on "Behind Gates". The off-beat, loud high production of Pastor Troy didn't affect the flows of these veterans on "Doin' The Fool" featuring Too $hort, Pastor Troy & Pimp C. Rick Rock's production on "It's Pimpin'" is nothing to sleeper as this is one of the album's highlights as well as "Clown Wit It" featuring Mystikal for example. Earl stay's consistent and evolving and that's what keeps the word longevity as an understatement.

4 out of 5 stars Another 40 Water classic!.......2004-06-24

I love this album by the biggest Bay Area Bo$$ Fonzarelli. I think it's better than the previous three ones, because on this album, E-40 finally slows down his flow, so we can actually understand everything he's saying. His style is still one of the craziest and most original ones, but since he's rapping slower, it makes the album so dope! As usual, 40 works with the best rappers and producers out there. You get great gust appearences by Too $hort, Nate Dogg, The Click, Eightball, Jazze Pha, Ice Cube, Mack 10 and many many more (not that 40 needs help, but it makes the album sound more intresting). You've got to get this album, cause it's Sick Wid It at it's finest!... I think it's 40's best album since "In a major way"!... You can't go wrong with it.

5 out of 5 stars Believer's best work, the best technical thrash album around.......2007-02-06

This album is ridiculously good. Alot of people refuse to listen to Believer because they have Christian lyrics, but those people are just idiots. Believer completely blew every single one of their secular counterparts (Atheist, Cynic, Death, Pestilence, etc.) out of the water with this release, and no progressive metal band came even close until Spastic Ink released "Ink Compatible" 11 years later, which is pretty equal with Dimensions in my book. The lyrics are incredibly intelligent (and most non-Christians that rip on them don't have any idea what Believer is even talking about half the time with Dimensions), the music is extremely technical and brilliant, and the production is perfect for this sort of release (I wouldn't change a single thing about the sound on this album). The crazy sound effects are still cool every time I hear them (and I've been listening to this album literally several times a week for years) and the gruff vocals are terrific. If you don't have this album and you claim to be a fan of progressive/technical thrash metal, your collection is a joke.

5 out of 5 stars Believer does it again!.......2006-04-19

This, Believer's last cd, is nothing short of amazing. Its more technical than Sanity Obscure and has some Avant Garde elements. The Trilogy Of Knowledge is a 20+ minute song in 3 parts with violens and operatic singing mixed with the Thrash(like Dies Irae on Sanity Obscure). Its definatley one of the highlights of the album. This re-issue includes 3 bonus tracks wich are the worst part of the cd.They're live tracks but the sound is just horrendous.Other than that this re-isuue is well worth the price(and don't take to long to buy it cause there are only 1000 of them made!).

5 out of 5 stars The Best Work That Believer Has To Offer .......2006-03-02

After listening to this album, I at first did not know what to think. It wasn't as heavy as heavy as Extraction From Mortality and Sanity Obscure, but however, it was very melodic and without a doubt, the most technical of the three that Believer released. At first, I thought that Extraction was the best and Sanity Obscure was rushed, and that this album was beyond rushed, but after REALLY listening to it, I would say that this is their best work. Unfortunately, I cannot say which album I find to favor the most, but I will say that it is not Extraction From Mortality. Even though Extraction has my number one favorite Believer song called Shadow Of Death, The album itself is a let down compared to the later two.

Sanity Obscure is kind of between Extraction and Dimensions because Sanity obscure is very technical like Dimensions, and is Heavy/Head-banging like Extraction. Most people seem to favor that album the best, when I personally do not know what to think. I will say that I do find this masterpiece to CURRENTLY be my favorite since I haven't completely listened to Sanity Obscure like I did Dimensions.

Reguardless of the fact that this album is not as heavy as the other two nor do I think it was intended to be, it still delivers strongly to Thrash Metal, but more in an artwork type of way with the melody and technique used in it.

The best work is not always the favorite, which is why I am still confused as to what album is my favorite, but it doesn't change the FACT that this album is the bands best work. 10/10

Product Description

Sacrament's debut release intends to brutalize from start to finish - mission accomplished! Originally released in 1990 on R.E.X. Records, Testimony of Apocalypse became an instant favorite with thrash fans. Songs like Slave To Sin were perfect examples of beefy thrash guitars and classic thrash vocals used to create an abrasive wall of sonic power. As an added treat, Retroactive Records obtained permission to include the 7 tracks from the ultra rare Presumed Dead EP as an added bonus. In 1989 the band took it upon themselves to release the EP, and until now it has never been available on CD or in stores.

5 out of 5 stars If they weren't Christian they'd be THRASH LEGENDS!!!.......2006-09-23

All right, first things first. I've never been a big fan of the idea of Christian metal. To be honest, I always kinda considered it an oxymoron. But then I stumbled across SACRAMENT and the thrashing beast inside of me said, "wait a minute, you can't just ignore these guys because they're Christians, afterall, they thrash up a serious storm!" It's true, SACRAMENT have that killer late-80's thrash/speed metal sound embodied by legends like PESTILENCE, TESTAMENT("Legacy"-era ONLY), INFERNAL MAJESTY, SEPULTURA, DEATHROW, SACRED REICH, and even hints of metal-era R.D.P.(Ratos de Porao). But most amazing of all, despite the similarities between the SACRAMENT sound and the bands I just listed, in general, SACRAMENT have a pretty unique and semi-innovative sound for 1989-1990. In some ways, they were actually a little ahead of their time. To bad no one in the underground thrash scene really cared. But now almost 20 years later the extreme metal world(myself included) has a chance to re-evaluate these guys due to this cool CD release featuring SACRAMENT's album and demo from 1990 and '89, respectively. The question is, will the metal scene be any more willing to overlook this band's Bible-loving convictions now, than in 1990? Honestly, I don't think so. If anything, with the flourishing Black and Death metal underground, and seemingly more Satanic bands than ever, I'm sure SACRAMENT will remain outsiders. But hell(oops, I mean heaven), I'm sure SACRAMENT could care less. They know they had something special going back in the late-80s, and most thrash fans who can look beyond the Christian thing will agree. 4.5 stars out of 5 and sure to remain a cult band, if SACRAMENT is the house-band in heaven, maybe it won't be SO bad!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Yea dey ok.......2005-04-18

They played heavy and everything but they cant sing. Its just your average garage band that never took the time to work on vocals and some sort of orginazation in their songs. They can play but thay cant put out a very song.

3 out of 5 stars Cool Sdtk...But..........2006-10-04

I'm gonna keep this one short & sweet...I'm a lifetime fan of Star Wars, loved the music as much as I've loved the movies themselves, sought to buy the original scores, had to choose between the real deal and this one, saved 20 bucks buying the Story Continues, and loved it from day one. However, once listened to a few times from start to finish one can't help but spot the obvious, while this is an awesome production and re-recording of the original scores, the Global Stage Orchestra relies solely on synthesized instruments and you can feel the absence of REAL instruments. But it's still a keeper...especially for the Imperial death march. ~*REDD*~

4 out of 5 stars Actually a decent re-recording of classics.......2006-10-01

Let me start out by saying that this album isn't nearly as bad as many people are saying. I bought it about a year ago at a store up here when the initial album I was looking for was sold out. Not wanting to leave empty handed, I glanced around and found this totally by chance (maybe the force made me find it, who knows:)) and decided to give it a shot.

I wasn't entirely sure of what to expect when I put it in once I got back. Initially after the first fifteen minutes of listening to it, I started to feel as if I maybe should have bought something else, BUT at the same time it was still catchy enough to leave in until the end of the first disc. Before I knew it, I listened to all three discs in one sitting while working on a paper and I must say, it was definitely worth whatever I payed for it.

The music is different enough where if you're getting tired of listening to the same things over and over, you can put it in and not worry about listening to something you've heard millions of times over. However the music is similar enough where if you're in a Star Wars mood, you can put it in and still be satisfied.

The "sythnesized" Star Wars sound is very catchy after a while and a very good addition to any hard core Star Wars fans' collection, or just to anyones collection of music in general. It's interesting to hear how the music is still able to catch all of the emotion that is in the original soundtracks (especially in Episode III) and still sound different. I will admit that the tracks seem to be a bit out of "order". While episodes 4, 5 and 6 come first (which is fine) episode 2 is next, followed by 1, then episode 3, and then back to episode 2 again. Not sure why this is, but it's not a real big deal, just a little odd. Definitely worth buying if you're into collecting all things Star Wars.

1 out of 5 stars Fake instruments leave much to be desired.......2006-01-21

The synthesized instruments sound horrible. First off, when I bought this, I saw the name "Global Stage Orchestra" and was looking forward to hearing an orchestra -- of real instruments. What I was in for was a bad synthesized interpretation of John Williams wonderful music. If he were dead, I'm sure that he would roll over in his grave.

Many instruments sound so bad that it's distracting. For example, the smooth woodwind lines in "Duel of the Fates" sound detached and mechanical. Some brass instruments (which Williams uses liberally) sound more like car horns. Obviously not put together by a vocalist... the rear cover reads "MUSIC AND VOCALS PERFORMED BY THE GLOBAL STAGE ORCHESTRA." Apparently vocals are not music... which may be close to the truth in this case, since the vocals sound like hollow midi sampled voices. With so many great recordings out there... spend the extra few dollars and get a recording from a real orchestra.

1 out of 5 stars The Force is NOT strong with this one..........2005-07-11

My friend loaned me these CD's recently, and let me say they are nothing compared to the original soundtracks.

The recordings sound actually half decent for synthesized instruments, but after hearing the superb London Symphony Orchestra in the original recordings, any artificial orchestra (and even some real orchestras!) is a real let-down. Especially painful are the sequences which call for lots of brass; the LSO was so great at delivering a theme at full blast in an intense action scene, and the MIDI brass just sounds cheesey. The interpretation is poor in a few key sequences as well, too.

Star Wars fans really deserve better than this; get the re-mastered trilogy set:

5 out of 5 stars up to date with revenge of the sith.......2005-06-01

I just purchased this 3cd set while in Europe. It's indeed not the original soundtracks but high-quality "studio orchestra" selections from all 6 of the Star Wars movies, including R.O. Sith, mastered in SBM 24 bit sound. A good listen for Star Wars and John Williams fans at a nice price, attractively packaged in a 3 cd fold out digipack.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2007-06-10

The guys here obviously have talent. It just doesn't come through consistently on this album. The guitars in particular have their really good moments, but Colon/Maners never seem to pull everything together into one coherent whole. They seem to throw thrash stuff in here, a classically-inspired solo in over there, they add some hardcore style vocals, etc.... but it never gels. The lyrics are sort of weak at times, condescending at others, though they do at least try to tackle serious subjects (from their perspective anyway). I'm not really into the hardcore style vocals, so I'm not a very good judge of vocals on an album like this. This band's follow-up album, "The Passing," is a better record; I'd suggest getting that one.

4 out of 5 stars Christian Metal classic .......2006-08-08

Betrayal's debut cd was Christian Thrash with a twist.
Music is dark classic thrash with hardcore type vocals {Chris Ackermann} which are really good but not as heavy as Believer or Vengeance Rising stuff.
They change up difference music sounds in the songs at times, somewhat progressive but more just a music style. This really does not take away from the Thrash to much {ok! a little} but keeps you interested in the songs.
I bought this disc when it came out in 1991 with high expatiation. Marcus Colon of Martyr {another early Christian metal band} played guitars here. I love the lyrics on the disc especially "More Faith than Me" taking on atheists.
This album is a good listen and does not bog you down. I still play this one at times.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I really do recommend this album to any classic Thrash fan {just because it is not your typical thrash outing}. This album has become a Christian Metal classic leaving any complaints I had at the time mute.

Product Description

Only one year after their groundbreaking debut release, Seventh Angel unleashed this thrash metal masterpiece upon a very unsuspecting world. The bands 1991 release is generally slower, but heavier than The Torment. As the album title indicates, Lament For the Weary is a concept album which lyrically focuses on how we deal with lifelong depression and pain... Haunting musically and lyrically, dont be surprised if Lament For the Weary sends chills down your back. Rarely does a thrash metal band hit the bullseye so definitively. And rarely is a band able to augment full on shredding with mellow, subtle moments the way Seventh Angel triumphs on Lament... Get it now before this classic metal release goes out of print again!

3 out of 5 stars Poor Vocals.......2006-09-27

This bands plays some very heavy music and they do have some catchy riffs on this record but what they lack is more memorable choruses. After listening to this album a few times there was not even one line that was left spinning in my mind. Another negative aspect are poor vocals by some guy who surely can cry but can not sing.
Ps. This album is not a classic speed/trash metal. Its more of a doom/trash metal.

5 out of 5 stars SWEET TO THE EARS.......2005-09-22

If you long for the days of old Metallica then this is for you. Yes, this is a Christian Band, BUT WHO CARES it rocks!!!!!!!!When I first heard this one in 91 I was blown away buy it and still am when I listen to it. It went out of print, just the The Torment, but now is re-released and I'm sure it sounds just as good as when it was originally released. You won't find song lyrics like this ever again for a Christian Band or originality. From the first song Recollections Of A Life Once Lived to the ending song Farewell To Human Cries, you'll be just as amazed with them as I am. This is a must have for any metal fan who loves metal no matter Who they sing about.
