5 out of 5 stars swag in the bag .......2006-02-21

you all know who gilby clarke is he was the replacement guitarist for izzy stradlin who bailed after axl was getting all leadership and bein' a ditactor so they bought in the vasely under-rated guitarist mr gilby clarke he played quite a lots of shows with the orignal guns and roses
but most time he used to sit backstage with the rest of guns and roses and get plastered because axl rarely turn up for shows on time
after 1997 when the final member of guns roses quit and axl the one man band went on for the next 10 years tryin' to complete the follow up to the "use your ilusion" albums
this album that's been in the work for a decade and has had the likes of vrian may playin' on tracks if they still exist whom knows
so if we ever get "chinese demoracy" it is planned for release this year maybe i don't know..does anyone still care about the one man band well any way
gilby clarke went on to do a solo career with no good crictal sucess and most of his albums have faded in the sunset
due to not bein' able to crAack the heads which are narrow minded
on this 2002 abum "swag" released on the famous "spitfire records"
gilby clarke does a sorchin' hard rock album filled with blisterin' riffs that actually do make your skin peel
cocals so raw that could skin a cat and lyrics not to intelligant but they work so who cares
if it ain't broke don't fix it
this album features a cover of a classic bowie track
"diamond dogs" most people like to cover bowie songs i wonder why because bowie's songs are acessible to any voice and gilby clarke does a superb job on a thin white duke's track

other highlights feature the openin' track "alien"
under the gun crocodile tears "margarita" beware of the dog

5 out of 5 stars No frills Rock N Roll.......2002-11-23

On SWAG, GILBY CLARKE gives us a dose of no frills Rock N Roll that will satisfy any rock fans taste. From start to finish, there isnt any posing by this band, it is guitar driven, in your face rock that will leave you wanting more. We have 11 blistering tracks that will leave their mark on your ears and have you wishing rock music was like this once again. Gilby shows us that he is just more than the former guitar player for GNR, he is a talented musician that knows how to give us some great rocking songs the way rock music should be, no frills, just music full of thrills. You want great music, than listen to these following tracks: ALIEN, MARGARITA, JUDGEMENT DAY, UNDER THE GUN, BROKEN DOWN CAR and a cover of David Bowies DIAMOND DOGS. These are just a few of the killer songs on this CD. Go out and get it know, you will not be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Not too good.......2002-11-04

I bought this album after reading some raving reviews, and even though I'm a huge Guns n Roses fan this album is just not worth the money. The guitar work is "ok" the lyrics just plain [stink]. If you want a Gunner solo album chech out the snakepitt, Izzy, Duff or wait for chinnese democracy.

4 out of 5 stars GILBY GETTIN' BETTER.......2002-03-20

People that have been able to witness gilby's career as a solo artist may agree with me.
This album is much better than rubber his previous work (4 years ago). In the style of "The Hangover", "Swag" keeps rock n' roll music alive...
Again Teddy Andreadis and Eric Singer helped Gilby, also Stefan Adika (who worked with him in the notorious Col. Parker) appears playing bass. A great appearance is Tracii Guns, with awesome guitar work, specially in "Alien".
Much more rocker than previous records, SWAG explores blues and country sounds nicely. The production and mixing is superior than the previous work (rubber) by far.
The album starts with one of Gilbys best songs to date: "Alien" with very cool guitars (tracii guns on Slide Lead). Other interesting songs are "Broken Down Car" and "Warm Country Sun", both featuring Taddy Andreadis on harmonica. "Crocodile Tears" and "I'm Nobody" are good songs with classic Gilby sound. "Margarita", on the other hand explores the latin blues sound in a cool way, and "Diamond Dogs" (bowie) sound excellent.
On average a Good album, worth the money if you have liked Gilby's previous work.
And a good rerun of long lost rock.

4 out of 5 stars Definitive Gilby.......2002-02-05

Once again former Guns and Roses axeman Gilby Clarke delivers a gritty and blistering performance."Swag" his fourth album continues the hard rocking legacy Clarke has been delivering through the nineties. From the opener "Alien" to the great cover of David Bowies "Diamond dog",Gilby continues with the no frills ,guitars in your in face attitude that gave him a hit with "Pawnshop guitars".Give a listen to "Under the gun" or the nicely rocking "Warm country sun" and you will be a fan.Helped out on Guitar by Guns and roses founder Tracy Guns and Drummer Eric Singer the album is pure gold and pure Gilby Clarke.

Nashville-based Swag is a five-piece power-pop outfit built around Wilco, Mavericks, and Cheap Trick members on a busman's holiday. While Catch-All's dozen pastiches never hit the classic pitch of the Beatles, Kinks, and Todd Rundgren numbers that are among the group's most obvious touchstones, most of them are catchy enough to appeal to devotees of the style. What's missing are the darker shades that might lift the album to the level of Revolver, Big Star's Radio City, or more recent discs like the Mayflies USA's Summertown and the Figgs' Sucking in Stereo. If the notion of Trick-style guitars vying with the opening lines of the Sesame Street theme appeals ("Ride") though, this is your record. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars Really want to like this one, but..........2007-07-03

On the surface, it sounds a helluva lot like producer Brad Jones' solo classic "Gilt-Flake," which on my subjective rating scale merits about a six (out of a possible five). So that, and the participation of the oft-inspired Doug Powell, made this one a no-brainer.

But the Swag material is not nearly as clever and seductive as Brad's stuff (or even Doug's). Just as The Grays were an amazing amalgamation of off-the-charts talent, you can hear frayed bits and pieces of each band member's attempt at leaving his signature, but those looking for a reason to smile might just lose patience by the 11th or 12th track.

Gonna put this one back in the shelf and revisit some time in the future. After several listenings, it just ain't sticking...

5 out of 5 stars A little Rock/Pop Gem you probably haven't heard of......but should!.......2006-05-27

So, whilst visiting Amazon.com looking for something new in the Rock/Pop dept. I happened upon this little beauty. `Catch All' is a wonderful mish mash of many musical styles. First off I'll throw out the influences this album clearly thrives on. The most obvious being the Beatles from the extremely well crafted `Norwegian Wood' stylings of both `Near Perfect Smile' and `Different Girl' to the Upbeat and wonderful `Hard Day's Night' era track `Please don't tell' with it's hard sharp jangly guitars & great strained vocals. I think Paul McCartney would be pleased to hear such well crafted homage. But the Beatles aren't the only guy's in the mix. I could hear `Cheap Trick', `Kinks', `Bon Jovi', Any Brit-Pop Band you care to mention from the early 90's (Cast, Dodgy etc.) and even `Queen', check track 2 `I'll get by' with the slightly `It's a Kind of Magic' lead in. The album isn't shy about wearing all its influences on its multi-talented sleeves. Speaking of which lets throw in `Burt Bacharach' for good measure on track 5's 'When She Awoke' with it's epic sweeping sound and highly romanticized chorus line that steadily evolves to a wonderful crashing finale, horns blazing in the background like some 70's Soft Rock classic wannabe. So, as you can see there's a lot going on in this album. Nice use of uncommon instruments. Harmonicas, Violin's, Piano's & Bells used the way they used to back in the 60's. I had never heard of this band/album up until 10 days ago. I bought this CD used for like $2.00 used & $4.00 S&H. Who knew there were so many hidden gems out there? If you're looking for some well written, well played rock/pop you should give this a try. 5 Stars

2 out of 5 stars Drop the bag, Swag.......2003-11-07

These guys are starting to make me nervous. Each time I try to listen to this CD, I get uncomfortable for the wrong reason: in this line of work, I don't want to keep reaching for a Q-Tip. I've heard of music described as ear candy, but this isn't the place to be foppishly cute, especially when I hear "doodle-dee-doo-dwee-dee-diddle-doo-doo" repeated on the intro lyrics to "Lone." I am sure there were folks who thought the Bay City Rollers were fun, too-along with the likes of the Partridge Family and the Archies.

Oh, yes, the music is full of well-knit hooks and the tunes have been specially crafted for the current popular audience-but I'm gritting my teeth at the same time and not over the whole set. I can't fault Swag's lineup for trying to run these patterns (they were helped by Cheap Trick's Tom Petersson)--but Squeeze overall did this a lot better. Yes, these guys did listen to a healthy measure of The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Small Faces, and The Kinks; I recognize that. It's the best part of the songs, but the sales pitch seems to be for middle school kids-I assume.

Some good solid bites: "I'll Get By" and "Please Don't Tell"; however, there's a `heavy-on the schmaltz' (that's chicken fat to those who don't know-it's used like grease) sound to "Lone" and "When She Awoke" that would please an 11-year old-if that was Swag's intention to have such a young audience. Jerry Dale's vocal sounds like a lost third member of Air Supply on "Louise," and just tell the engineer to drop that moronic phone conversation he recorded-it's blatantly mindless. I'm convinced that there was too much sugar in someone's coffee in the studio. And while someone's looking for the light switch, please explain the presence of the strings.

I don't mean to keep this up, but please stop Scotty Huff from singing on "Different Girl" until his voice decides to stop hitting those flat notes-they're out of his range. There's a follow-up bridge that skewers an attempt to sound like the Beach Boys and the background vocals are as useful as a vacation in the desert. Look here, guys, you put this tune out, not me, and no one hears me in my car or the shower.

I still think there are listeners who will say there are some other good songs on this CD; I'm sure, but you can evaluate it yourself. I know that this gets a lot of hits for downloads and Swag has a great website promotional package as well as touring. I just wish their music backed up their effort. Well, I'm going to give this to my dentist. I think it's an even trade.

5 out of 5 stars It Fell From The Sky.......2003-01-16

I stumbled on this CD by hearing about Doug Powell, another power pop lad who obviously has the entire Jellyfish collection in his car stereo. Thats a good thing, a very good thing. Hearing about the other players on the album I was curious to hear the outcome.

The day I got it a played it 6 times truly absorbing its flavor. I can't yell loud enough, "why is this stuff not on the airwaves?" It is far catchier than some of the lame pop on the radio these days; so I wait.

I highly recommend this gem. Each song reminds me of something, somewhere and someone. Hope you can experience it too.

5 out of 5 stars Can you judge an album by its cover?.......2001-12-12

Catch All by SWAG is a great album.

Catch All 's cover photo is an interesting assemblage of memorabilia by SWAG. It is the sort of stuff we all collect; the personal treasures we can't throw out because they hold our memories. How does this relate to the music? Catch All seems to be SWAG's personal musical treasures. You know, fragments of songs remembered or the feelings evoked by songs.

This is a great album. Catch All is easy to like upon first hearing and over time the album reveals more gems of words and music. Listening to Catch All over a week or two I've found myself humming more musical phrases and noticing words bubbling into my mind.

The music is tantalising and clever. It feels like remembering or recognising old favourites. I can't quite put my finger on a specific resonating song.... and maybe there isn't one. This album isn't a copy of anything. This is modern music acknowledging the influence and inspiration received from music which has come before.

This album is a textured collection with gentle sentimental, rocking, raunchy and some just hauntingly good songs. There are good melodies with well developed instrumentation. These songs are well sculpted. Backing vocal styles are from the `50's and `60's but they are not nostalgic nor daggy. They cleverly fit in, add a fullness to the sound and, in some cases, whimsy and light heartedness.

On another level Catch All can be interpreted as an assemblage of emotion. Although the theme is a relationship breakdown (the good feelings tinged with heartache) this is an upbeat album. SWAG have searched for meaning and come up with thought provoking hope.

I have opinion and comments about each song (because they are all my favourites). But I'll just comment on a few:

`Lone'. It is a silly song but it is so `60's. It has some great instrumental phrases and rhythm which I would love to hear expanded upon some other time.

`Louise.' Don't worry guys, in spite of the thoughtful sensitive approaches to the whole subject there's still a good song about a one night stand.

`You'. A gritty, moving duet with Jerry and Robert (sounding nothing like Diana and Julio). It is distress and anger at not being heard or being considered in the relationship break up.

`Trixie'. Trixie is wistful and slightly teasing in both words and music. There are still fond feelings and memories for the past but it is better to let go. A great song - a caring, considerate good bye.

`She's deceiving'. This is a wonderful, tender song acknowledging that both parties are distressed and in pain. There is an understanding that people do try their best in relationships but sometimes it's just not enough. No one is blamed. (I don't hear any crockery or chairs flying across rooms and smashing on walls.)
SWAG shows their great skill with crafting words. To describe it I have written more words than are in the song!

In summary - I am impressed with Catch All and SWAG. I am looking forward to SWAG's next album. In the meantime I suggest you buy your own copy because my copy is not out of the player long enough to lend anyone.

Message to SWAG -Hey guys, give up your day jobs and do more SWAG.

This thing oozes with soulful, heavy rock grooves! If you like The Black Crowes, Government Mule, early Aerosmith or Led Zep, you will love this CD! The Swag Hooks sophomore outing brings the spirit of early 70's rock clearly into the present. "Groove" is the operative word with this blues/rock influenced group based in the NY/Connecticut area. With an emphasis on the riff, the songs are both infectious and moving. Give and take guitars tug on the beat, while soulful vocals tell it like it is. From the greasy funk of "Do You Think" to the swampy grit of "Tipitina" , this album is a winner... A must have for any die hard rock enthusiast!

There is nothing better than finding a great new band in a world where you thought new Rock & Roll no longer existed. I remember hearing Led Zepplin for the first time and thinking the same thing (I wish i was alive when they were together). Its got that rocking blues feel of The Black Crowes but I promise you, its totally original.

And if you like smoking guitar work that smolders with soul, Bellantoni will blow you away. He is up there with my all time favorites: Clapton, Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I was lucky enough to see these guys live, if you get a chance check em out

Put on your headphones, close your eyes and prepared to be blown away.

Good rock and roll music today is almost as extinct as the vinyl that the music came on. I say almost because these guys are still around. Remember Guns-n-Roses back in 87? By that i don't mean the style of music, just the 4 guys up there kicking [butt] and bleeding for you, the real music fan who should buy into this local Chicago band. Start with this cd, as it is their best effort to date. Simone, Pill Popper, Summer Girl, Everything and Siamese are really strong tracks. This is great listening, you won't regret the purchase.
