There's a distinct ignore-the-elephant-in-the-room irony to the very idea of a punk jubilee. The whole punk ethos once dictated that bands like the Vibrators weren't
supposed to outlive Van Halen and release 25th anniversary live homages to themselves. But whether the notion of a 40-something Vibrators is more or less palatable than a 40-something David Lee Roth, this recording of the band's Cinco de Mayo 2000 set at New York's punk shrine CBGB's is undeniably blistering, if punctuated with strangely nostalgic cries of "1977!" The trio incarnation (Ian "Knox" Carnochan, drummer Eddie, and bassist Robbie Tart) of the band further focuses the energy as they careen with Ramones-like fury through much this show's 21-songs-in-under-an-hour set. Vintage '70s cuts like "Yeah Yeah Yeah," "Baby, Baby," "Judy Says," and "Disco Mosco" are seasoned with cuts from throughout their career, ample proof of the band's elemental consistency. But it's not all buzz-saw and sweat, as the neo-Music Hall, electric-chair-themed sing-along "Juice On" proves. If the original knock on the Vibrators was that they were careerists, this album will dissuade few from their professionalism--or stubborn sense of timelessness.

Great for Fans.......2006-09-25
This albums is great for Dinosaur Jr. / J Mascis fans. I prefer the sound on this disc to the Martin + Me live acoustic show. The shows are similar, but this ones works better for me.
If you are a fan of Dinosaur Jr. then you may like:
1) Low Rises by Baby Ray
2) Waterproof by Zeke Fiddler
3) Banjos And Sunshine by Sixty Acres
4) Year Of Mondays by Mike Johnson
Unreleased: Sort of..........2006-07-10
First off, it's J. Mascis and it's a fine solo show so it gets 4 stars. That said, if you already own "Martin + Me", you're essentially paying for 3 songs by buying this (Not the Same, Quest, and Throw Down; the later coming in at about 45 seconds). Even the arrangements and the vocal delivery are almost identical to "Martin + Me". Wouldn't shock me to hear they were recorded within a week of one another. Surprising that J let this one out of the vault. Must have been needing the royalties before he was able to convince Lou Barlow to go in on the Dinosaur Jr. reunion.
A solid acoustic performance.......2006-06-25
I just picked this up. I was ecstatic that my local music store actually carried this (Zulu Records in Vancouver). Anyways, 10 of the 12 tracks are previously unreleased. Fans of the loud and squealing guitar of Dinosaur Jr might be a bit put off by this album. When they say acoustic show, they mean it. There doesn't appear to be anything else to the tracks other than acoustic guitar, vocals, and maybe a touch of reverb. This is just raw J Mascis. Anyways, the sound quality is excellent and tracks are mosty good. For me, the stand out track is definately Repulsion. This works so well as a purely acoustic number. That song alone is worth the price of the CD.
All in all this a solid live album. It's definately not as easily accessible as say Nirvana Unplugged, so this album might be better suited for more hardcore Dinosaur Jr/J. Mascis fans.

mind blowing live CD.......2006-06-30
It's a pleasure to listen to this great band, specially with this gifted bass player (Muzzy, we miss your playing).
Mindblowing: Cult of personality and FUnny vibe (speed meets swing and balance).
Also check the bootleg LIVE 1989/90
Underrated band, unfortunately
A great live set........2005-09-24
In 1989, Living Colour were on top of the world-- a bonafide hit song received tons of airplay in "Cult of Personality", and the band, back home in New York, played their old haunt CBGBs. Professionally recorded, the show saw release sixteen years later.
One thing about Living Colour live is the enormous amount of energy they bring to the stage-- this is never really captured appropriately on record. The best example of this is "Middle Man". A fairly muddling song on album, it explodes in live performance here. Likewise, powerful performances of "Funny Vibe" and "Open Letter to a Landlord" (feautring an extended intro a superb lasst chorus with guitarist Vernon Reid dropping out and bassist Muzz Skillings picking up his line).
In addition, several then-new songs made appearances at this show-- a bunch were destined for their next album, "Time's Up", like "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" (getting a fantastic reading here that captures the energy of the piece better than the studio take does) and a somewhat overly forceful "Solace of You". In addition, two songs that never surfaced on an album ("Soldier's Blues", "Little Lies") are on this record. While neither is exactly fantastic, it's nice to hear "new" old material.
Something stops me from giving this five stars, probably because I've seen them do better shows live (if they come anywhere close to you, check them out!), but this is a fantastic disc. Recommended.
Muzz is the one true LC bassist!!.......2005-04-08
I love ya Doug, but Muzz's playing still gives me chills. This is the young, raw Living Colour at their best! This is not a bootleg with poor sound quality, this concert was well recorded and the CD is well produced (Vernon did it!). I've seen Living Colour live several times over the years, I wish I could have seen them at CBGB's. I saw them in '89 at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, and this CD brought those memories flooding back. Living Colour is always best live. When you have a group this talented, they can often improvise and make changes on the fly. That happens a few times on this CD. Some songs from "Time's Up" are on this CD, even though that CD wasn't out yet. So you hear how those songs changed a little when the group was testing them out live. All fans of Living Colour should own this CD. I hope they do one from a recent concert.
A true Living Colour live showcase..........2005-01-18
Living Colour has released a real gem to its fans with "Live at CBGB's...". Having witnessed the stellar Living Colour perform live only twice (on the Time's Up and Stain tours), I have been yearning to hear more live material from one of the 20th Century's greatest American rock bands.
This newly-released live show from CGBG's in New York (1989) does not disappoint. The mix is very clear, and the performance by all four original members of the group (Reid, Glover, Calhoun and Skillings), is phenomenal. Vernon Reid's mastery of his instrument is demonstrated in abundance on this record, rivalling the live work of any legendary guitarist. Not having the benefit of a studio rhythm guitar track, Reid pushes himself to recreate the lush soundscapes and fierce rhythmic assaults featured on the albums using only his single guitar and masterful use of effects to further embellish his playing.
Will Calhoun and Muzz Skillings illustrate what a great rock/soul rhythm section can accomplish, and Corey Glover's powerful vocal range is met and EXPANDED (!) on this live workout. He manages to take a few cues from Prince and really belts it out to eyebrow-raising effect on most of the record.
Recorded between the release of the albums "Vivid" and "Time's Up", this show features several songs from Time's Up, not yet released when this show was recorded. "Pride" and "Fight The Fight" are performed in nearly note-perfect form...along with a couple songs that THIS L.C. fan has never heard before.
This recording is a masterpiece, and showcases the soulful and learned capabilities of this exceptional band. If you are a fan of Living Colour at all (especially their early era), you MUST pick up this album.

This breathtaking performance displays why Bad Brains became one of the most important bands in the history of American Hardcore. On Christmas Eve 1982, Bad Brains began their three-day stint at a Hardcore Festival hosted by legendary CBGB. This CD represents the very best of these shows, culled from over 4 hours of footage. Their live performances were legendary. Now, for the first time on CD, that powerful performance is revisited in extraordinary fashion.

YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO GET THIS!!!!.......2007-03-22
If you're a big Korn fan, you already have every song on this disc. If not, then it's a great package for a great band. Korn has had a great career, and this Greatest Hits shows that. It also shows that the mainstream changed for Korn, not the other way around. Even their hits are hard and explicit. But the real reason to get this is...THE DVD
THIS IS THE GREATEST DVD EVER RELEASED BY KORN. IT IS AN AWESOME, FREE, SMALL PERFORMANCE AT THE LEGENDARY CBGB'S. NOT ONLY THAT, IT'S AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE FROM KORN. IT'S THE SHOW YOU WISH YOU WERE AT. THE SHOW THAT SOME OF US EXPERIENCED BACK IN THE DAY. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE THEM TWICE BEFORE "FOLLOW THE LEADER", AND THIS ONE REALLY TAKES ME BACK.
THE DVD ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THIS ONE. NEW FAN OR OLD...JUST GO GET IT!!!!!

Landmark Recording.......2003-01-26
I was at this show and let me tell you that this album is an important document in the annals NYHC history. Not only do Agnostic Front perfectly represent the NYHC style of the time, it represents it at it's pinnacle moment. Agnostic Front was in top form and their performance that day was mind blowing. Everyone there knew they were witnessing something special as this album was recorded. This was supposed to be Agnotic Front's farewell performance. After that day it seems the hardcore scene was forever changed, it died a little, and "Live At CBGB" is it's swan song. As "A Music Fan" notes below, the recording is very clean, and he feels that the vocals may have been re-recorded. It's possible. Agnostic Front had to perform their trademark tune "Eliminator" twice because of microphone problems (that unfortunately wrecked both performances), but otherwise this album is exactly as I remember it being performed. If you are a hardcore fan, or a music historian, you owe it to yourself to own this album.
1 minor flaw but still essential.......2002-08-27
This album captures the essence of a Sunday Matinee at CB's (minus the beatdowns). The only thing that prevents this album from garnering a 5 star review is the fact that alot of the tracks and vocals sound like they were re-recorded - it sounds a lil too clean..some of the rawness is missing. I would have liked all of the feedback and sound drop-outs when the band is getting jumped on by the crowd left intact, but having said that, this is worth it just to hear Vinny Stigma telling the crowd to "sing this song in uni-since." Also killer versions of "Anthem," "Blind Justice/Last Warning," and Iron Flag's "Crucified."
Fast and Furious.......2002-04-23
This introduced me to Agnostic Front. From start to finish, it plows through you like a freight train. Even the GUITAR SOLOS were brutal! Roger & company aren't messing around here. This is the best of old school NYHC. Don't pass it up.
Agnostic Front: Kings of Hardcore and the Live Show.......2002-02-05
I picked Live At CBGB up for the first time when I was 16. It was the first time I ever had heard AF, and I was completely blown away by it. Eleven years later and I still get chills from this album. anyone whowants to know what real hardcore sounds like should pick it up.
Hide the kids..........1998-11-03
These guys make the ultimate distinction between punk and hardcore. This isn't an album for somebody looking to expose themselves to Agnostic Front for the first time, but it is an excellent one for people already familiar with their hard hitting style. They're often misclassified as a racist band, which couldn't be further from the truth. They just tell the truth about the world, and that offends/scares a lot of people...

Lying on the Sofa of Life.......2001-09-30
A band that crucified modern music, dna were destined for great things, but vanished in the early 80's. To really hear this band, get the studio recordings. This live album is unfortunately very poorly done. A casual listen will reveal a very annoying static hiss, this gets paired with jibes, screams, and claps from the audience. Furthermore DNA sound out of their element, as they perform these songs twice as slowly as they should be executed. It's a shame that DNA's only true full-length release was mothballed and then dropped onto the market place in such shabby condition. At least Zorn's label could have re-mastered it.
Another point to raise is that magazines now talk about No Wave and DNA the way they talk about Captain Beefheart. If something is dissonant or unmelodious, it's "No Wave". Well, it's not. That's just fashionable psycho-babble.
No Wave is a term that applies specifically and only to the music of NYC in the period of 1976 to 1982 as performed by jazz-influenced musicians who incorporated modern music techniques such as noise, atonality, mixed media, liberation of sound, and liberation of rhythm into rock.
Most of the bands that are called No Wave- Sonic Youth, DJ Spooky, Blonde Redhead, et al.- are not No Wave because they use elements of pop music that No Wave stood directly opposed to, such as repetition, structure, sometimes tonality. So if you want No Wave music, do not listen to current music. Make your own. The point of No Wave was to say that anybody and everybody can make music and that it shouldn't be determined by arbitrary standards.
where are they now?.......1998-09-09
easily the best of the no wave groups from new york circa 1979, dna is best on the seldom seen 9-minute "a taste of dna". but this will suffice a great performance from extremely talented non-player arto lindsey, throbbing drummer ikue mori, and beautiful bass ex-pere ubu tim wright. this could have been five star had they been able to tack on the four "no new york" tracks, the "ants" single, & "a taste of dna" (the disc runs about 29 minutes), but take what you can get, sporgs.

Punk Rock History Lesson.......2007-01-15
Though much concert documentation has been made of early punk groups such as The Ramones or the Sex Pistols, lesser known groups have not had their live material unearthed in official form. Wire is one of the most important punk/post punk groups from the time but has been reticient to release live recordings until recently ("Wire on the Box:1979"). By 1979, Wire were clearly in the post punk camp. It is fascinating to hear them progress to this stage live. The first disc includes two full concerts from 1977 from the Roxy where Wire are clearly still in the traditional punk phase (including the unreleased Ramones take off "Mary is a D---") but with later traits to come (classic songs such as "Strange" come off well). The sound quality is reasonable for a recording of this nature. The 2nd disc (I had heard about the concert from a friend who was in the scene at the time, great to hear it live)is from CBGB's from 1978 and unfortunately, the sound recording takes a nose dive in quality, which is a shame because by this time Wire had fully evolved into the band it would become (highlights include "I am the Fly"). However, in releasing the full concerts, instead of the usual greatest hits live or tampering with the sound, Wire has done the listening public a favor. This is assuredly the way they sounded live but is furthest from nostalgia (Wire still record and perform) but rather a blueprint for future bands who decided to take their sound from the sonic minimalism of punk and into something more sophisticated and essential.
For the aficionados only.......2007-01-11
This is a collection of three Wire performances, two at the Roxy in London and one at the CBGB Theatre in New Work. Ultimately I found this release very disappointing, especially considering its high price and the terrible sound quality of the CBGB performance.
On the first disc are two sets recorded at The Roxy in London, recorded some time before the release of their debut album, Pink Flag. They feature identical setlists and were performed to an almost empty room, so there is little audience interaction. The liner notes reveal that these recordings do have some historical value, however, as they were instrumental in getting the band signed to EMI.
On the second disc there is a short set they performed at the legendary CBGB Theatre in New York, featuring material from their first two albums. This performance was recorded by a radio station, but very badly! The sound quality is just awful, making me seriously regret my purchase.

...a moment in time..........2007-04-13
...this is a piece of history...a time that, sadly, i believe, we will never see again...
bands like tuff darts, the shirts, the laughing dogs, mink deville...all great...
and the atmosphere comes thru the vinyl...i mean, disc...
and dale...sorry to hit you with a second shot, but to further disprove your theory of these acts not going anywhere after this, yes, robert gordon was singing for tuff darts, mink deville is actually playing b.b.king's club this month in manhattan (thirty years after the fact), and the shirts have not only released another great album this year, but their lead singer of the day, annie golden, went on to be seen on the big screen in movies like "hair", "12 monkeys" and "it runs in the family"...
but, that's neither here nor there, because what was important was THERE, the place where every musician was a musican...not some joker trying to land a big recording contract...we played because we loved the music...and we loved being around each other...
no, there will never be another cbgb's, despite their attempt to bring it to vegas...
somehow, i just can't picture wayne newton as the newest 'ramone'...
All for the love of rock'n'roll.......2004-02-27
Although none of the best-known NY bands are heard here (oh, the record contracts flying around CBGB's in 1976 ...) cult favorites like Tuff Darts (Robert Gordon), Mink DeVille, and the Shirts sound like they're having a great time. This collection, recorded over three nights in July, 1976, shows the New York rock scene going in all different directions. It's surprising how "radio-friendly" most of this music seems now. In the days of multi-platinum Peter Frampton and Fleetwood Mac, though, Manster's sped-up cover of the Yardbirds' "Over Under Sideways Down" was absolutely radical. Imagine that. And though it's true there's no real missed opportunities here, its a terrific snapshot of a time, a place, and an energy that's likely not to happen again.
A typical evening of music at CBGBs.......2001-02-17
Actually, Dale, some of the performers did go further than this album. Mink DeVille may never have become a household name, but the band and its leader, Willy DeVille, released a slew of terrific albums. DeVille still records a new album every couple of years with exceptional quality stuff on every outing. Tuff Darts had a pretty decent first release that got loads of airplay in NYC, but the band's lead singer on Live at CBGBs was none other than Robert Gordon who spawned the rebirth of 50s rock and roll revival bands like the Stray Cats, the second coming of Link Wray, and many others. Gordon released several very strong albums and was a real critical favorite at the time. The quality of recording here is fair at best, but the youthful energy pours out of every song. This is a document of late 70s NYC New Wave which, at its best, was every bit as good as the British counterparts of Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, et al. Would've been nice to get a couple of other CBGB bands who did make it bigger on this disk --Blondie, Ramones to name a couple. Work the money, though.
Close, but could be better.......2000-11-14
This CD is an attempt at the collection of the CBGB's scene of the late 70's emerging punk/new wave music. Unfortunately, none of the bands represented made it beyond this album. You get great hits like "We Deliver" and "Slash", but overall the musicianship leaves something to be desired, though the emotion is there.

The sound is great and if you weren't a big fan of Agnostic Front before, you will be after hearing this album. I was lucky enough to find it on vinyl and have been listening to it alot.
