5 out of 5 stars The best opera album ever.......2007-01-26

I have listened this album almost every day for the past 4 years. For begginers and amateurs in this kind of music, the album rocks in every song with the exception of track 2 and 5.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, Nice price.......2007-01-04

I purchased this CD for my daughter while searching specifically for arias. She was very pleased and I find myself enjoying it as well.
A wonderful collection for a terrific price, super fast shipping too- as always.

The good news: Bush haven't changed much since 1994, the year of their breakthrough hits "Everything Zen," "Machinehead," and Glycerin." The bad news: Bush haven't changed much since 1994. Still, fans of singer Gavin Rossdale's breathy, sexy, Bono-ish vocals will dig such songs as "Solutions," which finds the Brit foursome mining familiar musical and lyrical territory. While the album is not a revelation, it is a solid outing laced with cool contrasts, provided in part by the input and production of Dave Sardy (Marilyn Manson). From the melancholy "Headful of Ghosts" and the raw and rollicking "The People That We Love" to "Superman"--a lush, loose and expansive song, heavy on the metaphors--Golden State sounds stellar. On the mellower tip, "Inflatable" is lovely, sexy, somnolent, and atmospheric, as is "Out of This World," with hollow-sounding, almost tribal drums, sitar sounds, and industrial tinges. Bush move easily into wilder territory with the raw, powerful guitars of "Fugitive"; the edgy, frenetic drums and techno touches that mark "Reasons"; and the unexpected punk fury of the two-and-a-half minute "My Engine Is with You." While Bush's fourth outing may not break new ground, this Golden State is still planted on terra firma. --Katherine Turman

This is a great cd...ive heard of alot of people who didnt like it but it has some great songs..Solutions,People that we love, Fugitive,Inflatable are the best to me..if your a Bush or Institute fan this would be a great buy..

5 out of 5 stars Really good music.......2007-05-13

The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Great stuff! Sixteen stone was a great CD, and I liked the ones that came after that, but this is a return to the original great stuff, but still new.

4 out of 5 stars Worst sales, Best tales.......2006-08-22

This album was thrown under the bus when no one was looking, but it is simply their best album since 'Sixteen Stone.' Whereas 'Razorblade Suitcase' was status quo and 'The Science of Things' lacked a defined album musical direction, 'Golden State' surfaces as a great comeback with hanuting yet beautiful melodies. Lyrically, it is superior to the last two records and Gavin's vocals are of course gorgeous.

Listen to these three tracks and you'll marry this album: 'Solutions,' 'Inflatable,' and Bush's best song ever - 'Float.'

3 out of 5 stars Its alright........2006-08-05

This is Bush's fourth album, and its pretty good, its shame it dd not the air play it should of, especially compared to the other junk thats constantly rotating on the airwaves.

Every track delivers, its just its far to stripped back and no individual songs really stand out that match it with their best songs. Still "Solutions" "Headful of Ghosts" "Float" "Inflatable" are all standouts.

5 out of 5 stars Long Live Bush!.......2006-03-13

'The Science of Things' is at the bottom of the barrel. 'Golden State' along with '6teen Stone' and 'Razorblade Suitcase' are the best albums I own. After the mediocrity of 'The Science of Things', Bush managed to pull themselves up again. It's like they found that missing link and compensated for it. 'Solutions' is a great album opener. Almost too good. I immediately thought, "How are they gonna top this?" But they managed with songs like: 'The People That We Love', 'Superman', 'Inflatable', etc. It's all good. 'Out of This World' alone can carry the album. My favorite song of all time! Get this album and be prepared to be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for 60's music collectors!.......2004-12-10

A BIG thank you to Big Beat UK for releasing this compilation of 4 very rare EP's from San Fran's psychedelic underground, otherwise known as the "San Francisco Sound". If you were lucky enough to find and purchase VG+ to near mint original pressings of these EP's, God Bless You and because you have spent over $4,500 easy. Big Beat UK have done a fine job remastering these gems on CD as the sound quality is superb considering the sources. The Frumious Bandersnatch was taken from the master tapes and every song on their EP is a gem. "Hearts To Cry" is an incredible song and features some of the finest 2-way acid guitar attack to come out of the west coast during 68'. It's a crying shame this band never signed to a major label and released a full length LP. The Mad River EP is a psych masterpiece, although it was dubbed from acetate. "A Gazelle" should be played at maximum volume with the speakers facing out of the house windows! Notes from the Underground released 2 LP's after the EP and is decent late 60's rock. Country Joe and the Fish's EP is a must have. These guys basically started it all. The EP versions are a bit faster and looser than the LP versions, but nonetheless are performed with conviction and assurance that a "change is gonna come". Overall, all 4 EP's are ESSENTIAL listening for 60's music collectors and lovers alike!

4 out of 5 stars excellent 60s psych compilation.......2000-12-23

this is a highly recommended release. the version of section 43 is actually probably even better than the one on the lp. country joe &the fish are in fine form on the ep. mad river's amphetamine gazelle ( also done on their debut record) is a wild and brilliant slice of acid rock, as is the weird ep only anti war anthem orange fire. i also strongly recommend both of their albums, which i feel are two of the stronger san francisco area releases of the period. notes from the underground, despite their moniker, won't remind you of the great dostoevsky story, they were really a fine garage, or proto -power pop aggregation, with a good timey flavoring somewhat like the lovin' spoonful or bay area contemporaries the charlatans. the frumious bandersnatch (their name taken from lewis carroll's poem jabberwocky)serve up some wonderful and exhilirating psych that probably is the highlight of the cd along with mad river's material. the guitar work, ominous bass riff, great vocals, and powerful lyrics in hearts to cry is amazing, and the song is a san francisco acid classic. the other two bandersnatch tracks are also very good. there's very little filler on this release and it definitely should be heard by acid rock fans and sixties enthusiasts

4 out of 5 stars i cant believe no one reviewed this thing yet?!.......2000-10-06

Berkeley was at the absolute heart of the sixties. I could have done w/out Letters from the underground but between Country Joe & the Fish (the only band on the album people may have heard or heard of), Frumious, and Mad River ya' go to many a place. This is really a piece of history-a psychadelic wonderland.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-12-31

I first heard Mia Doi Todd at a friends, and asked her who it was. She copied me a few songs, and before I knew it i had to go out and buy all of her CDs. Most of the songs I had were remixes, and this CD has all of the songs in orginal form. Mia reminds me of Jewel and Dido, but more haunting. She uses an interesting mix of piano and acoustic guitar. If you are not sure about Mia, this album is in my opinion, the best and a good starting point.

4 out of 5 stars Good effort.......2006-02-24

Manzanita was the first Mia Doi Todd album I heard, and I was impressed enough to buy up her catalog. This and Manzanita are my favorites. This one is a little more polished, but probably a little more consistent in song quality than Manzanita (she remakes some songs from previous independent releases). Well worth it. She's a real talent.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden State.......2006-01-14

Mia Doi Todd's The Golden State is a sprawling landscape of luscious electronica and delicate melodies taken to task by Todd's strong, throaty voice. It's as though Todd challenges her own compositions, her voice such a delicious contrast to the music that it loops back around and blends in perfectly. Harshly rich, shockingly poignant, and often uncomfortable in its stark honesty, The Golden State is an eccentric collection well worth having close to any true music lover's record player.

88 Ways: Lush, with offsetting voice layering to back up the haunting lyrics. "Gravity and entropy, they have it out inside of me...the hermit and the hero walk in parallel lines."

Digital: Gorgeous guitar carries the whole song on its back. The only constant in this risqué, catchy song that takes one much deeper than the whole may seems. "Forbidden fruit rotting on the vine...intoxicating...throw your body to the edge of crisis."

Independence Day: Utterly bone-chilling. Todd's frighteningly precise dictation stands out, pointing straight at the cold realities. "All my heroes have turned human this year."

Merry Me: "Once I was enslaved to a human being. What to do today now that I'm free? Merry me, merry me, merry me. Is this how it feels to realize one's dreams?"

Like a Knife: Calming, with a seemingly subdued beauty, making it all the easier for the song to hit you right in the heart. "You came in the morning after a dark night...like a knife come to slit our ties to the past."

Autumn: An uplifting, bewitching song. This was the song that sold me on the entire album. Todd at some of her best. "Autumn comes to a seaside town a little later than the rest...the leaves let go, so let them go."

Growing Pains: A sad, ballad-like musing on the pain of-what else?-growing. "I've been heartbroken for a year and a day."

Poppy Fields: Dark, a song that hides in the shadows. One of those creatures that goes bump in the night. "I scrub my blackened feet, scrape off the caked on grime of the street. I wash my hands and face of the worldly soot that accumulates."

Hijikata: Sweeping and full of secrets, like you're definitely not getting the whole picture. "He danced on his deathbed and so performed his final dance...one thousand and one birds, take off in an instant, flying-feeling-filling through the air, and I ask them `Is all freedom light?'"

Age of Reason: A melancholy, distant rambling. "In my age of reason, complicated by feeling, I dream of impossible things."

5 out of 5 stars An artist worth taking the time to hear (or your money back!).......2005-10-19

First, let's get this out of the way: This is truly remarkable musicmaking, from a really unique talent who's deserving of wider attention. The freshness and candor of Mia's music will do something for your heart that is really very rare in today's music world.

Clearly Mia's haunting, penetrating voice is not at issue. What other reviewers do seem to be disagreeing about is the degree to which her music is spoilt or redeemed by the poetic quality of her lyrics. On this count I can only say that her lyrics are light and wistful here, touching and more covered there, and yes, occasionally sociopolitically heavy-handed enough to make the listener take her seriously. Somehow through all this the feel of the music is unburdened but substantive. She is writing on the whole gamut of the human experience, and so her musical and dictionary palette varies song to song. But know that where she means to be subtle, she is subtle, and that is a beautiful thing.

You will not like every single track on this album (I still can't stand the much-adored Like a Knife). But if you wish you were in touch with more music that has the power to engage you by its sheer quality and remarkable subtlety, please go out and get some Mia Doi Todd before it's too late. It'll do you good.

4 out of 5 stars Fan of Melancholy? Try Mia Doi Todd's Golden State........2004-08-15

It's true there's not much happiness on this album, but that certainly doesn't have to be a bad thing. Some of the best Belle & Sebastian (or Tori Amos or Iron & Wine, etc.) songs are the ones that aren't bouncy and happy. Mia gives listeners intelligent lyrics with occasionally clever word-play backed by music that is often understated but effective. "Autumn" has that elusive quality that hooks a listener and stays with them long after the song is over. "Independence Day" capably connects the world's issues with battles that are more personal. Golden State clearly refers more to buddhism than sunny days so to give this album a fair listen...try an overcast Saturday afternoon in October while you're inbetween chapters of a really good book and resting comfortably in your favorite chair.

1 out of 5 stars Peculiar Amazon indexing.......2007-06-08

A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best bay area cds ever!!!.......2003-03-06

This cd has got to be one of the best bay area rap cds ever released. N2deep comes into their own on this album with solid beats, lyrics and on point features. If you pick up any N2Deep cd, this is the one to get. Don't sleep on this, pick it up!!!

5 out of 5 stars Their best album ever.......2002-11-20

wow this album has everything. the beats are tight the lyrics are on point and it can be played from song 1 on. if you like Bay area rap then you'll love this album. Mac Dre, Dubee, PSD, and others come on this one and make it one of my favorite albums period.

3 out of 5 stars A step down........1999-01-30

The album is good and is great for going around cruising but it's a step down from their last album 24-7-365 which was, to me, one of the greatest rap albums ever. Still this album bangs and is a must for the collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Motel California . . ........2005-11-10

I got to see this band at California Plaza in downtown LA on a recent lunch hour, and they just blew me away. LA WEEKLY has picked them as the Best Alternative Country Band, and it's a joy to share the great pleasure they bring to playing their own compositions in the California country rock tradition. This CD captures much of that spirit and adds a good many studio touches to sweeten the mix.

The CD kicks off with an eco-conscious number, "Hope Against Hope," and establishes some of the dominant styles of the whole set: haunting steel guitar, strong vocals, literate and elusive lyrics, soulful harmonizing, and wonderful fiddle flourishes. It evokes escape from the city and images of the open road.

The rest of the CD segues from one style of country rock to another, with cameo influences you can trace to Talking Heads, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, The Eagles, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, and Grand Ole Opry. The lyrics of some songs are elliptical ("Humboldt"), while others tell stories that focus on an experience, a person, and a set of feelings ("Hitchhiker"). While one song is a slyly humorous hung-over love song ("Still Want You"); another verges on hysteria and paranoia ("Wonder Valley Fight Song"); and another reaches for Revelations-inspired weirdness and a kind of gleeful melancholy. "I Stayed Away," with its sorrowful lyrics and upbeat tempo is a great two-step dance song.

The title song, "Grapevine," comes last and celebrates the northbound exit from LA along I-5 over the Tehachapi Mountains to the San Joaquin Valley. It's a fitting ending to this great collection of songs that features place names from all over the country, references to open roads, 18-wheelers, and American cars. Fans will also enjoy Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen's "Way Out West."

5 out of 5 stars Best Alt-country band out there.......2005-07-05

These guy's are making California Alt-country, and if you don't know what that sounds like, I strongly suggest that you check them out. With three discs to their credit, and all of them being great, they're starting to make one hell of a name for themselves. They're the buzz in that state, and it won't be long before their sound branches out to the masses. Of course, being an honest roots band doesn't get you major record deals these days, but it's nice to know there's still some great outfits like this keeping the real "no depression" folks happy. Highly recomended. Get all their music at www.cdbaby.com. Also check out these groups: Wrinkled Neck Mules, and Bucksworth (the best roots rock outfit there is today),very impressive young groups that are keeping honest music alive.

5 out of 5 stars What are you waiting for?.......2004-11-05

This is a great album, the captures the true spirit of country music and channels it through so many moods, styles, emotions, and locales, and yet remains so thoroughly Californian. This is an album for when you've lost all hope: the Hawks are there to save your soul. If you haven't heard their first album, "I See Hawks In L.A.", that was great too, but "Grapevine" just has to be experienced.

      Album Description

Incredibly rare funk singles by the likes of the San Francisco TKOs, Windjammers, Love Experience and Mel Davis will no doubt catch the eye of the hard-core collector, but this highly listenable compilation can also boast that over half its contents are unreleased, with some red-hot sounds from the likes of 87th Off Broadway, `60s soul thrush Ramona King, future Janis Joplin sideman Snooky Flowers and the inimitable Wally Cox. Master tape sound, in-depth liner notes and some eye-popping pics complete the package. Regionally-focused funk comps have become an increasingly popular showcase for the obscure delights beloved of the aficionados, and "We've Gotta Groove: Golden State Funk" is one of the strongest to have come down the pike.
