Hidden Gem.......2006-04-18
This is Shorter's first Blue Note album and it is without a doubt a classic. It definitly has a Coltrane influence in its virtuosity. However, you can really see Shorter developing his own voice: one that really takes off on his next series of albums on this same label. Also, unlike Coltrane, he lets another horn compliment and shine, especially on this album. You really cant go wrong with any of the albums that followed, such as "Speak no Evil" or "Ju Ju". However, the reason I would choose this one first is the lineup that accompanies him. Lee Morgan is one of the most underated trumpet players. He and Shorter really hit a stride together. The combination of McCoy Tyner(piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) round out a premier band. It has more of a mellow feel than his next few albums. I would also add that I totally disagree with the assesment in another review that Shorter is "better" than Coltrane. I think such comparisons are silly. Coltrane was going for a totally different feel; more experimental and spirtual, for a lack of better terms. Shorter is seeking more of a mood. Both are valid expressions. Shorter is much more acessible. You will love this album on the first listen. That shouldnt dissuade you that its not a great work, however. It really is great jazz listening. I never grow tired of this album.
WAYNE SHORTER: TENOR CLASSIC!!.......2005-06-25
Along with Shorter's discs Juju and Adam's Apple, Night Dreamer is surely Shorter's best disc. "Folk Song" & "Virgo" are classic modern jazz tracks: smooth, sophisticated, soulful, etc.
By the way, Shorter is no Coltrane imitator: if anything, Shorter is better than Coltrane. Shorter is exactly the most recent tenor genius in the line of evolution from Coleman Hawkins, through Ben Webster and Les Young, via Coltrane: Shorter is the man!
Shorters first Milestone.......2005-03-05
Although not getting interested in music until the age of 16, Wayne was to become one of the most important sax players in the history of jazz. Shorter was the main sax player in three of the most popular jazz groups ever. Starting off with the Hard Swinging Art Blakeys Jazz messengers. Althouh his main influence was still coltrane, Shorter began to develope his own style and to improvise more fluidly. Once when Coltrane had had enough of the Miles Davis Quintet he told Shorter of the open spot in the quintet. He went for the chance and soon became not only Miles best running mate but a brilliant composer in the group too. His stint with the fusion based Whether Report, lasted from 1970 until 85.
Night Dreamer was the first of 9 bluenote albums that the saxophonist was to record. You can see the major influence of Coltrane in Shorter, not only in his playing but his rhythmn section of McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones which was basicly Coltranes working trio. The first and title track starts off with Tyner, then workman and Jones join in to set the groove. Shorter and Morgan deliver excellent solos and Tyner with his masterful right hand lines. Shorter, as I said, was to become a brilliant composer but his most celebrated work are his ballads. "Virgo" (two takes), is a definite masterpiece and ranks among some of Shorters best ballad pieces including "Infant Eyes" from "Speak no Evil" and "Lady Day" from "Soothsayer". The tunes are powerful and this session is much more than just a organized jam. "Armageddon" has a misterious feeling which is present in a lot of Shorters work. Night Dreamer was Wayne Shorters first milestone, and not his last.
Wayne's First, One of His Best.......2005-03-02
Wayne Shorter's "Night Dreamer," his first album as a leader for Blue Note, briefly drifted out-of-print on CD over the past year, but now is back in all its remastered glory with this RVG reissue. And it's a good thing too because this is not only one of Wayne's best efforts, but one of Blue Note's all-time Top 50 discs. The tenor-saxophonist is joined on this April 29, 1964 session by Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner (listed amusingly as "Etc" on the cover for contractual reasons), Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones. On "Night Dreamer," Shorter takes the composition and playing talents that he honed with the Jazz Messengers to a new level. (In fact, Miles Davis was impressed enough by Wayne's growing stature to offer him a spot in his second great quintet later that year.) The songs featured here, especially "Black Nile," "Virgo" and the title track are as good as anything Shorter penned, and that's saying something considering how many classic tunes he wrote during the 60s and beyond. But as good as the writing is, the playing is even more remarkable. In my opinion, Wayne has forged a cleaner sound, and a more distinctive yet somewhat ethereal voice since his earlier days with Blakey's group. His musical understanding with his colleagues, particularly frontline partner Lee Morgan, is unparalleled. And speaking of chemistry, the rhythm trio of McCoy, Elvin and Reggie Workman certainly have it after all the time they spent together with John Coltrane. Personally I still find "Speak No Evil" to be Shorter's best BN outing, but "Night Dreamer" is a very close second (as in 2nd place in the 100m dash at the Olympics!). Thanks to the RVG series, those who have previously neglected to get this classic jazz album, no longer have to dream about buying "Night Dreamer."

Spectacular Mantovani Music.......2004-09-20
This is one of Vocalion's latest re-issues of two original recordings made by Mantovani and his Orchestra in 1960. It pairs the folk songs of the "American Scene" composed by Stephen Foster and others, along with concert gems, all brilliantly arranged by Mantovani and his collaborator Cecil Milner. Stephen Foster's time-honored music appears to be having a comeback these days and so will the utterly appealing orchestral interpretations given to these chestnuts by the masterful brilliance of the Mantovani sound and the artistry and discipline of his musicians. Some 45 years ago, Mantovani's American Scene LP remained 30 weeks on Billboard's Top 40 List and rose to a high position of number 11. Listeners now, as then, will enjoy the melifluous string-laden arrangements of Beautiful Dreamer, I Dream of Jeannie, My Old Kentucky Home, Grandfather's Clock, and Goodnight Irene, and they will tap to the lively, full orchestra arrangements of Camptown Races, Ring de Banjo, and Turkey in the Straw. Decca's "Concert Spectacular" CD, never issued and rarely heard in the United States, teases the listener with a distinctive waltz time arrangement of the popular Sousa march, Stars and Stripes Forever. Many will shed a tear when they hear the cathedral sound of languorous strings and woodwinds in Danny Boy. This Concert Spectacular offers the listener a plethora of musical imagery. With extraordinary and unique orchestrations, one will feel the fiery excitement of "Granada", sense the clash of thunder and lightning in Strauss's Polka, and march step and "fall" with the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. These two CD's together are truly spectacular, because their tracks are filled with the emotion and energy of the creative and distinctive Mantovani sound. This is "ultimate Mantovani", soothingly wistful moods and evocative melodies that make you want to listen to them with all the attentiveness of a concert goer, a paradigm for all today making light orchestral music of which Mantovani was truly the master.

Customer Reviews:
Wayne Shorter finding his niche among the greats of jazz!.......2005-01-30
Shorter's first solo Blue Note album NIGHT DREAMER was recorded around the time he joined Miles Davis' quintet. Here the sidemen are from outside of Davis' regular circle -- note that all were associated with Coltrane to varying degrees -- including Lee Morgan (trumpet), McCoy Tyner (piano), Reggie Workman (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums). Shorter wrote or adapted all of the six tunes, including an altered blues ("Charcoal Blues"), a signature Wayne ballad ("Virgo"), and several mid-tempo vehicles for the soloists, including "Night Dreamer" and "Black Nile." As would be typical of Shorter's music, the tunes are distinctive and allow the group plenty of space to make individual statements as well. An impressive debut by any standards, and no surprise given Shorter's then-soaring reputation based on his work with Blakey and Davis.
Shorter's Best Disc..........2005-01-17
Night Dreamer is tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter's best disc, followed by Adam's Apple.
One of Wayne's best.......2003-02-08
Wayne Shorter's Blue Note debut, the first of eight 60's LPs he would record as a leader, is also one of his finest. The liner notes quote him as saying he felt he needed to make a statement on his big debut, and that he does, in a big way. The muscular yet sensitive tone and excellent tunes that define Shorter are all there, all at once on this record, minus some of the more exploratory elements of later albums like _Et Cetera_ and _Schizophrenia_.
The lineup is very strong and all the musicians contribute most excellently to Wayne's overall unified vision, which, as one may well expect, is nocturnal as well as imaginative. He really has a visual and conceptual *theme* in mind when he writes these tunes, and it makes them very rich and evocative. All the tunes are memorable, particularly the title song, the expressive "Virgo", "Charcoal Blues", and the subdued yet dramatic "Armageddon". I place this record right up there with _Speak No Evil_ and _Adam's Apple_.
Great place to start with Shorter.......2002-05-22
Shorter has long been held high by jazz heads for his compositional skills; the man just writes great jazz songs. This album catches him before he gets into the stuff he's really known for, but it's still a great record, particularly for the first track. It's fun, cool, and the band plays their colletcive tooshes off. A nice addition to a traditional jazz collection. If you like sax, Shorter's your man.
Jazz at its Absolute Finest.......2000-06-11
Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and McCoy Tyner's Trio have recorded some of the best jazz, possibly, ever. All solos are beautifully constructed, and Shorter's solo on the title track is near unforgettable. A great buy for anyone interested is spectacular music.

Customer Reviews:
Marvelous Collection of 19th Century Music.......2002-02-18
This is my first purchase of a recording by Jacqueline Schwab, but it won't be my last. This is a CD to own if you enjoy a talented pianist and a marvelous collection of 19th century, primarily American, music. It's not the soundtrack to the Mark Twain special, but a wonderful accompaniment.
Great "gowith" for the late 19th Century!.......2002-01-23
As usual, I cannot write anything bad about Jacqueline's work! Her solo performance I find very relaxing, and challenging with her own style of modern piano technique to keep otherwise old and established pieces interesting and upto date. Go buy it now!
She captures the life and times of Mark Twain.......2001-12-20
This music sends me back to the time when Mark Twain lived. This is the album to get. The mood of her music is critical. I wanted more of Jacqueline's music on the sound track. I couldn't listen to her piano playing enough. Get this record
