Night and the City [Live]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Except for applause at the end of a couple of tunes and a single quiet cough, you might not be aware you're listening to a club recording, so hushed is the Iridium audience during this quietly intense 1996 musical dialogue between Kenny Barron and Charlie Haden. The ballad conversations are so intimate that it's almost inappropriate to break them up into the constituent players, but Barron is magnificent, opting for single-note lines over Haden's deeply resonant bass, stringing out a continuum of inventive, often double-time phrases that animate the slowest tempos. Even the chromatic fantasia that introduces the luminous "Very Thought of You" is spare. With Haden, less is more; there's never an unnecessary note, never a superfluous phrase. His accompaniments consist of only the barest harmonic substructure and the minimal pulse, while his solos sing as unadorned melody. Each piece is given time to unfold (the seven selections last 70 minutes), and the results are quietly intense, sometimes exalted, music-making. It's fine late-night listening, in the city or anywhere else. --Stuart Broomer

Jazz Times
Pianist Barron's art seems to grow deeper with each passing year.... Haden, by contrast, seems to have grown more concise.... Haden and Barron each contribute a tune to the standards that are the main course here: "Body and Soul" belies its well-earned chestnut status, and "You Don't Know What Love Is," though the shortest selection here, glistens.

It is a perilous proposition when genres clash--and no such collaboration is more potentially fraught than when improvisation-trained folk musicians sit in with Western classical instrumentalists, who are taught to interpret a printed score. The renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted much of his professional life to such intercultural experiments. But the traditions of nations situated along the ancient Silk Road, which began in the Far East, meandered through Asia and terminated in Europe, are especially dear to him. These lushly arranged pieces range from moody scenic vistas to percussive Turkish hip-shakers and they make very pleasant listening. If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. And nobody is more of a team player than Maestro Ma, an impassioned, fearless musical seeker and a gracious, deferential colleague. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars delightful experience.......2007-07-04

this collection of music is quite a cultural experience. I've been hooked since I opened the cover!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20

I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23

Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.

Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent!!!.......2006-01-15

One of the best concerts I attended in my life (so far... :-)...)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best !.......2005-12-06

This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

5 out of 5 stars Muy Sabrosa (Very Tasty).......2007-05-22

I like most people first heard Gerry Rafferty on the Stateside of the Pond when he was with Steelers Wheel,
I have always liked his basic use of Acoustic Guitar/Bass/Drums/Keyboards & Sax, as well as his double tracked vocals ,Gerry has a great sense of Harmony & Melody ,something that is sorely lacking in the Rock Music scene today .These are Gerry's first 2 Albums and are Dynamite well worth the purchase. Drummer Henri Spinnetti is on these disc's and he has done work with Paul McCartney and others .

5 out of 5 stars City to city/Night owl.......2007-04-03

Already owning City to city I bought this for Night owl, which as far as I know has never been on cd. The only other place You could listen to songs from Night owl (other than LP) was the compilation Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, which has the radio edit of Night owl with a little over two minutes cut out of it. The label is Collectibles, an independent reissue label sort of like BGO records, the sound mastering is great, better get it while the gettin's good!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty of Night well expressed.......2003-12-08

This album well expresses the romantic aspect of night and my personal favorite track is "Waltz for Ruth" which romantically expresses love combined with sentimental longing I would highly recommend this album to those who want to fully enjoy the feel of night, this is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Audiophile and Dinner Excellence.......2003-03-25

If you are looking for an audiophile piano recording, this one is outstanding. The piano is close miked, and and you can clearly hear the striking of the keys. The sound is beautiful, and is probably as good of a piano recording as I have heard. The bass background resonates in club and there are no wasted notes. The music is best characterized as soft jazz, and one can imagine listening to this in a posh restaurant / night club. This is one outstading recording deserving of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Barron and Charlie Haden are Exceptional.......2003-02-18

Shortly after I bought this CD I saw Sphere Live at the Vanguard, and commented to Kenny That this had to be his best, and probably one of the best Jazz Recordings ever, destined to enter the history books, this is a "must have".

Just buy it, and sit back and listen, as I have time and again.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe Barron's best.......2002-12-20

Kenny Barron is one of the best pianists in jazz today and Night and the City may be his best recording.

Recorded live with bassist Charlie Haden, the pair set a wonderful, late night mood that carries the listener through the entire recording.

Dark, lyrical, intimate, beautiful; this is a record I turn to over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Night and the CD.......2002-12-03

Like everyone else, I loved Charlie Hadens "Nocturne" cd (now there is a 5 star cd for you!)and wanted to hear more. This looked like a good place to start- Hadens' world class bass and stellar pianist Kenny Barron, a duet setting ostensibly playing music reflecting a noirish mood of, well, night and the city. The first selection, a Barron original entitled 'Twilight Song'is just that, mellow, impressionistic and beautifully evocative of the evening. We are also treated to Hadens lovely 'Waltz for Ruth" but the rest of the album largely consists of standards-well done but I would have prefered hearing another original piece or two. A couple of the numbers are a little more uptempo and seem to break the mood the album had so carefully established in the beginning. Barron also gets a little bit too frilly and effusive in his keyboard runs a couple of times, but these are minor quibbles-this is an excellent cd and deserves a place in your collection. While not quite on the same level as the Nocturne CD, this is a lovely duet recording and anyone who loves the aforementioned Nocturne release will probably want this in their collection as well.

Album Description

Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER

4 out of 5 stars Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14

Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09

John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19

If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.

Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter and Cambridge Singers.......2007-01-18

This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

4 out of 5 stars AN OPERA OPUS THAT'S A MUST!.......2003-01-19

Oh, such letter-perfect perfection! This marvel features a two-hour-plus showcase of well-known arias from "Cosi Fan Tuti," "Aida," "Carmen," "Madame Butterfly" and "The Barber of Seville." It also comes with a book --- 762 pages of remarkable facts, figures and illustrations.Encore!

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2002-06-09

This is, by far, the best introduction to opera on the market. It also contains some gem performances for anyone who already has a serious opera collection. Several tracks on this collection of mostly Eastern European singers rival those of their Western counterparts. This is a collection for EVERYONE - from the opera novice to the person who has long collected all the major Western stars. At this price, it's the best opera bargain in the world. GET IT NOW!!! Thank you, Naxos! I hope that some of these Eastern European singers at last get the attention they deserve.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Modestly Priced Favorite Arias Collection!!!.......2001-02-12

I received this as my 20th birthday gift from my bestfriend and I was amazed at the quality and the content of this CD. Some of the arias which I am immensely fond of are included, i.e. "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen." And who would have guessed that the soprano on track 10 performing Queen of the Night's Aria from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" was none other than Hellen Kwon? Amazing!

I really love this gift from my bestfriend for it was thoughtful and well, what can I say that this makes an excellant gift for opera neophytes (though I am not an opera neophyte).

The highlight of this CD is track 13, Rossini's "Largo al Factotum" from "The Barber of Seville." When I first heard this, I was contemplating to myself as to where have I heard this before. Then it hit me: Michigan J. Frog's signature tune! (In case people are wondering who on earth is Michigan J. Frog is, he is the Warner Brother's frog; the frog can be seen on WB network channel). I love this track! Buy this for yourself if not this makes a perfect gift for your opera neophyte friend(s)! This track brings joy and smiles on my face everytime I hear this piece!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to opera.......2000-12-16

More than just a promotional sampler, the Naxos (8.555037-38) contains not only 2 CDs crammed with 39 excerpts from that company's seemingly bottomless catalogue, but also a 762 page book. The text offers plot summaries of almost every important opera and many of far lesser renown (Delius' "The Magic Fountain," Mascagni's "Iris," for example), a brief biography of the composers, a glossary, and finally a discography. The recorded examples are in chronological order from Monteverdi to Korngold. The entries in the book, however, are in alphabetical order--so be careful to look for "Zauberflote," not "Magic Flute," and so on.

Of course, Big Names do not appear on many Naxos opera sets; but this set is an introduction to that vast area of culture and is meant to be an educational (and of course a promotional ) device. Nevertheless, many of the selections on the CDs are beautifully sung, a very few lack characterization (the arias from"Don Giovanni" and "Nozze di Figaro" for two). But at this incredibly low budget price, who can complain?

As soon as I saw what this set had to offer, I immediately ordered a copy as a seasonal gift for a friend who wants to "get into" opera. I could think of no better gift.

There is a sister set titled (8.555319-20) that uses the same format. There are 2 CDs with 36 selections from Gregorian Chant to Glass. The 562-page book gives us the major facts about "the Great Composers and Their Greatest Works, " a glossary, and a 45-page list of classical music heard in films. The discography is included in the composers section. Again, the value of this set as an educational tool is enormous and well worth the extremely low price Naxos is asking.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills Sings Operetta: A Rare Album.......2004-08-22

For fans of the 60's and 70's opera legend Beverly Sills, this rare and often neglected album will be pure gold. Fans of sopranos are willing to buy anything their favorite diva ever recorded. Beverly Sills, in collaboration with her conductor Julius Rudel and the London Philharmonic put together a kind of tribute album to Vienna's operettas and the music of its Waltz King Johann Strauss. This was originally an LP album that has been digitally remastered on cd. It is very rare and therefore very expensive and very much in demand. "Welcome To Vienna" features orchestral music- Thunder and Lightning Polka and the Overture to Johann Strauss' operetta A Night In Venice. As far as the singing, Beverly Sills delivers sheer brilliance and charm in the German-sung pieces here, starting with "Voices Of Spring" which makes use of florid and high coloratura embellishments. Beverly Sills' version is the most beautiful I've heard, on equal grounds with soprano Tracy Dahl's version. Marietta's Song from The City Of The Dead is quite moving and Beverly Sills' sweet, feminine, alluring voice truly captures the spirit of the melancholy song. Of late, only Renee Fleming sung Marietta's Lied just as beautifully.

The rest of the arias are quite well done. Beverly Sills sings beautifully in German, and she is the equal of the German master soprano Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, whom we are lead to believe she is modeling herself after in this recording. Schwartzkopf recorded an operetta album in 1959, which is available on EMI's Recordings Of The Century label. That album features much of the same pieces Beverly Sills is singing here. It's interesting to compare both singers and discover they both have artistry, skill and a floating, easy take on these non-dramatic simple pieces that are "dessert for the voice" in Sill's own words. Much like Schwarzkopf, Sills sings with refined elegance and calculated perfection. Her "In Chambre Separee" is beautiful, continental, and particularily good because Beverly Sill's French was always on the money. This aria combines French and German in a blissfully seductive way as a young maid invites a young man to an opera box where they could have dinner, champagne and a heart to heart. The Marlene Deitrich style aria "Meine Lippen" is sung perfectly by Beverly Sills. This aria is a cabaret style song in which the singer reflects on her showy, nightlife style of living. Finally, the aria "Wien, Wien" is a gorgeous praise to the city of Vienna.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.
