Album Description

The Bombay Connection showcases the sound of the Indian action film of the late 70s and early 80s. Under the influence of films like Shaft and Dirty Harry a new kind of though Indian action film came into being in 1970s India. To match the loud fights and fast chases Indian composers developed a exciting bran of Bollywood funk. Wah-wah guitars, congas and funky moogs were effortlessly blended with tablas, dhols and Indian melody lines. This album compiles 12 of the best, incredibly original Bollywood Funk grooves, painting scenes of frantic chases through back streets in Bombay, secret plots conceived in subterarian headquarters by fake-moustached vilains and sexy seductive dances by female spies. The 6 panel digipack comes with a colorful 32 page booklet containing well researched info and a wealth of pictures.

hmmm... ok I have a best of Asha Bhosle CD thats kinda kickazzz too. but this is the best western comp ive heard. the best cheesey funky kitchy comp. the packaging is beautiful with lots of informative liner notes. very very impressive. THANK YOU bombay connection - i cant wait for the rest of your series to come out.

Great music from a forgotten artist.......2006-07-21

I knew little about Freddie Redd until I read a review of this album in the All Music Guide to Jazz. It sounded great, so I went ahead and ordered it. All the accolades are justified, this is a great CD. Redd is an unjustly neglected jazz pianist, and his interplay with tenor great Jackie McLean is just superb. I plan to investigate the rest of Redd's (too few) albums as well.

"The Connection" No Longer Disconnected.......2005-08-17

Originally available on CD in the mid-90s as a limited edition title in the first round of Blue Note's Connoisseur Series, Freddie Redd's "Music from The Connection" has only been available as an expensive import or collector's item for the past decade. Thankfully with this reissue in the RVG Edition Series, "The Connection" is no longer disconnected. "The Connection" was a successful underground play that opened at New York's Living Theatre in July 1959 about heroin addiction and the lifestyles surrounding it. Being true to life, jazz played a large role in the storyline. It is a tribute to playwright Jack Gelber that he used real jazz musicians as actors, and as a result he got some great original music as a bonus. Pianist Freddie Redd wrote and played the music in the play, which was recorded here for Blue Note. (There is another album out there that has floated in and out of print on CD of a quintet recording of this music that featured Howard McGhee and Tina Brooks.) This disc features seven Redd originals and a band of Jackie McLean on alto sax (who also had a long run as an actor in the play), Michael Mattos on bass and Larry Ritchie on drums. This is the only recording I have featuring the bassist and drummer, and they both play admirably. Jazz fans, do yourself a favor and get "Connected."

The Connection, the now legendary play by Jack Gelber and subsequent film was a play-within-a-play first performed in 1959 by theavant garde Living Theater of New York. The story-line depicts a group of addicts brought together in the pad of a dope dealer by a movie producer whois filming a documentary. As the production unfolds, the junkies drift about a loft waiting for Cowboy, their "Connection" as four jazz musicians on stage among them provide a chilling counterpoint to the happening. Composer/pianist Freddie Redd, one of the original four musicians on stage recorded this album of his score in 1960. It is a jazz classic of two-fisted hard bop featuring trumpet great Howard McGhee, saxophonist Tina Brooks, Ossie Johnson on drums, and Milt Hinton on bass. Produced by Alan Lorber & Ernest Kelley.

Chavez production.......2004-10-28

Nice cd full of fresh instrumentals. This music is powerful westcost undergroud hip hop, but slightly different than others.
Beats are very clean and deep, with addition of some trip hop grooves, which produces nice slow(but also strong) tempo. Wery rhythmic.
Sounds similar to Dialated peoples or Swollen Members.
Recommended.

Don't know what to make of it.......2005-11-04

I bought this from my CD club as a freebie during a promotion. I was very impressed by Pahud in his recording of the Khachaturian and Ibert concertos and wanted to hear something else by him.

This is like a lot of collections by big name soloists. It includes a lot of unrelated music done up for virtuoso effect. Some of it is not particularly French, either, including the leadoff piece, a waltz by Shostakovich.

But everything is interesting and, to me, sometimes a bit bizarre. It was difficult for me to listen to an hour's worth of unrelated music for flute, piano, clarinet and other instrumental collections. The piercing tones of the flute, which were sometimes recorded very closely, were bothersome.

Still the playing is excellent throughout this disk. If you have an interest in the performers, or if you like French music and/or the flute, you will probably enjoy this very much. It is similar to many such collections by James Galway (no Irish or popular music, however.)

If you are like me, and your interest centers around European orchestral music, you may have some difficulty finding a niche for this in your collection. The recording is universally outstanding and audiophiles will enjoy that.

Gift Horse is a product of both self-reflection and a fascination with the marginal experience at the edges of society. The songs tend to contemplate the meaning in suffering and misfortune, perhaps following the logic that maladies, disorders and loss, have equal beauty and resonance as their diametric opposites. In this spirit, the album is a celebration at, or near, the end of the line. There is a tender will for life even within those bent on self-destruction. Gift Horse is a survivor's story. One's redemption, or if you will, revenge, comes from plain perseverance, and through this fleeting connection to others. Life itself may well be the gift, even while it appears to be the source of our suffering. In the end, the album can only contemplate this paradox, and celebrate a flawed human spirit as a triumph in and of itself.
