Forest Flower & Soundtrack [Soundtrack]

The reissue combines two live albums, 1967's Forest Flower: Charles Lloyd at Monterey and 1969's Soundtrack on one CD. The earlier release was one of the few jazz albums to sell a million copies, and it owed its popularity not only to its suggestions of bohemian romanticism but also to the strength of Lloyd's writing and to the empathic interplay between the leader and his then-unknown bandmates, pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The three recorded the very similar Soundtrack two years later. --Geoffrey Himes

The films of director Zhang Yimou have a panoramic sweep to them that deftly creates a fantastical vision of ancient Chinese culture for the screen. Yimou's eye for color and sense of drama demands a score that conveys the emotion, tradition and action of his movies. Here Shigeru Umebayashi tells each part of the story with a mix of traditional flute, drums, string instruments and, to a lesser degree, orchestra and moody-sounding synthesizers. The lilting melody of "Lovers" is particularly effective, simmering with a passion that leaves no doubt about the tone of the scene; it comes back to dramatic effect at other times in the film as well--the soundtrack closes with a soaring version of it by soprano Kathleen Battle. Similar to but not as heavy as Tan Dun's occasionally overbearing work on Yimou's film Hero, Umebayashi leans toward the subtle for this love story, and the film is better for it. - Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful score.......2006-11-13

I truly enjoy this CD. The music is enchanting, emotion-evoking, and powerful. I love to listen to it in order to relax before going to bed. I recommend this CD to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous film score.......2006-09-24

"House of Flying Daggers" is one of my favorite Asian films from the past five years. One of the main reasons I love the film is the sumptuous classical film score by Shigeru Umebayashi. The classical score reminded me a great deal of the score for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The operatic ballad by Kathleen Battle is stunning. I don't normally like most opera music but I definitely enjoyed listening to Kathleen Battle. This is a lovely cd to relax to with a hot cup of tea and a good book.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC........2006-05-18

Not only was House of Flying Daggers a wonderful movie, but the music was breathtaking. If for no other reason purchase the CD and enjoy Kathleen Battle's rendition of Lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Never Gets Boring.......2005-12-25

This album has everything good music needs. It's driving, subtle, powerful and soft. It is a truly amazing work of art. It gets the emotions of the characters and the events of the story out perfectly. A ballet could be performed to this score.

5 out of 5 stars Great !!.......2005-07-19

The music is wonderful, the two songs are one of the best I've heard...

    4 out of 5 stars Overhyped?.......2007-06-26

Since I'm the first one to give this CD less than 5 stars, there's some chance that I'm completely missing the point. That said, I don't really understand the effusive praise that it gets; there are a bunch of jazz recordings made in the mid-60s that I would recommend over this one, including some by Charles Lloyd himself.

This CD actually contains two albums. The first, and more famous, is Forest Flower: Live at Monterey, which contains the Lloyd quartet's legendary performance at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival. Judging by the other reviews, the performance of "Forest Flower" seems to be very popular. To my ears, Lloyd's playing on this tune is somewhat rambling and aimless; Keith Jarrett's brilliant playing and the nice groove generated by Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette are the best things about it. There are better versions on Lloyd's Voice in the Night (on ECM) and Chico Hamilton's Man from Two Worlds (on Impulse).

The other track from the Monterey performance is "East of the Sun", which gets a brisk post-bop (with hints of free jazz) interpretation. The balance of the album was recorded in the studio; Jarrett's "Sorcery" is sort of avant-jazz-rock piece (Lloyd on flute) and McBee's "Song of Her" is a lovely ballad (though perhaps better performed on Lloyd's The Water Is Wide (on ECM)).

The second album on this CD, Soundtrack, is a live performance from 1968. Lloyd's tenor playing is even weaker than it was on the Forest Flower album. It opens with a smoking version of Lloyd's "Sombrero Sam", which has a much tighter, funkier groove than the original studio version. Fantastic. I think this version of "Voice in the Night" is not very good. The album closes with another version of "Forest Flower", after a mediocre introduction on solo tenor ("Pre-Dawn"). This one starts out inferior to the '66 version, but during the second half the rhythm section just locks into this incredible funky groove. One of the highlights of this disc, as far as I'm concerned.

My recommendation is to check out a bunch of Lloyd's other albums, both from the 60s (Dream Weaver, Flowering/Warne Marsh) and the 90s (Canto, Voice in the Night), before this one. It's enjoyable but he's done better. If you like those then this one is worth checking out. If nothing else, this one features a fantastic rhythm section.

    5 out of 5 stars A most joyful noise!.......2007-05-16

As it says in the liner notes, Charles Lloyd and his quartet made such a splash at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1966 that the album became a million-seller, launching him onto the world jazz scene virtually overnight. Many critics over the years have compared him to John Coltrane, but Lloyd, Jarrett, McBee and DeJohnette came more out of the cool jazz tradition that played well to a west coast audience and indeed the world over, as Lloyd would be one of the few American jazz musicians to play in the Soviet Union and Red China. The infectuous rhytmns have a light funky sound, which carries forth onto the additional LP, Soundtrack, contained on this CD which features Sombrero Sam. But, it was Forest Flower that earned his place in jazz, which he played at one major jazz festival after another. Of course Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette have done pretty well themselves over the years.

5 out of 5 stars One of the first Jazz Titles I Owned.......2004-04-26

Back in 1968, or so, I first heard this album. I was just discovering jazz as a high schooler. This music has held up very well over time and I enjoy it as much now as I did when I was first coming to understand jazz.

    5 out of 5 stars Late 60's jazz classic.......2003-09-04

There is a reason for only 5 star reviews for this cd. It is one of the most accessible jazz cd's for those starting an interest in jazz. The music is like a more mellow, bluesy interpretation of Coltrane and modal jazz styles of the 60's. This is one of those cds that resulted in a crossover hippie and college-aged audience, and as a result, this album and the charles lloyd quartet was the most successful jazz group at that time. The opening title tracks are the most interesting and accessible, and don't sound that far off from the psychedelic rock that was merging with jazz at that time. In fact, Miles was inspired enough by this group to borrow some of the personnel for his electronic explorations. The rhythm section is one of the better ones still around with Jack Dejohnette, Gary Peacock, and Keith Jarrett. Charles Lloyd might not be as famous now, but his more laidback, breathy interpretation of Coltrane, and his less derivative flute playing fit in perfectly with the Jarrett and Dejohnette. This is one of those cds that non-jazz fans ask me to copy for them when they first hear it. It opens non-jazz fans to new styles...like Coltrane, and 60's jazz and soul jazz.

5 out of 5 stars transcendent, magical journey of sunrise, sunset.......2002-08-15

This is one of my all time favorite jazz cds. I have the original vinyl, scratched as it has played so often. Now I am grateful for the remaster on cd.

I was introduced to this by a jazz drummer (who became my fiance), and he said it was the best music to accompany love-making.

I was entranced. The great musicianship of jazz dynamos Lloyd, Jarrett, DeJohnette is a thrilling combination. The lyrical style, the Trane-like free form, the interplay of Lloyd and Jarett, are uplifting with some of the steps leading to a spirit evoking transcendence. It produces a gritty giddy sweetness in those reached for notes. (What build up to those high reaching notes! ah,sigh) Sunrise, sunset flow into each other with a subtlety.

It is a great cd for captivating a jazz start up collection, and intricate enough to satisfy the seasoned jazz buff. Don't hesitate but get this; don't breathe but get this. You won't be disappointed.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying!.......2007-05-29

I found this recording basically worthless. It contains only very short excerpts of the song. Not enough to get into and enjoy!

    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-01-18

This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

1 out of 5 stars A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

    1 out of 5 stars This sucks..........2006-03-31

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis

    Amazon.com

Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2001-07-29

This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.

3 out of 5 stars Beatiful singing - but where are the Swedish texts?.......2001-06-22

This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.

This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.

5 out of 5 stars if you like bjorling this is the best thing you can get!.......2000-06-26

this is so awesome, i love his voice, this is good for anyone, the professional or just someone who wants to hear the greatest tenor of all times! this is so great

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Collection.......1999-11-02

When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitive survey of one of the finest singers on record.......1998-09-25

Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.

This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.

5 out of 5 stars When looking for "the most".......2001-05-14

A local New York professional opera enthusiast has concluded that Corelli is the most popular operatic tenor, followed by Jussi Bjoerling. But if the question is, who had the most beautiful tenor voice ever impressed upon wax, we must lift up John McCormack. Here is true bel canto which no one else has ever equalled. These two CD's contain some of the most exquisite sounds ever issued by a human throat. Let the galleries declare their enthusiasm for stentorian high C's, the real lover of great singing will find much more to their like her than in all the verisssimo arias. Listen to the two "Mefistofele" Arias (Boito) and ask yourself if they have ever since been so beautifully sung. This recording belongs in the collection of every aspiring tenor, just to remind what can be accomplished by art and perfect singing.

    5 out of 5 stars A superb McCormack collection.......2000-10-21

If you remember hearing transfers of acoustic recordings to LP, you remember how hard it was to really connect with the music and performer through all the rumble, noise and resonance. This audio restoration is the most astonishing technical feat I have ever heard. The noise is now only a gentle background presence, not the roar of yesteryear. And even more important, it is constant in volume- in other words not a distraction. The fidelity really lets us hear what the early recording engineers really achieved. That said, what this brings to us are the performances of one of the world's greatest singers in richly emotional popular songs (and a few opera arias). There are so many of those old sentimental pieces no one could get away with recording anymore, but hold such a splendid reward for those of us who love them. John McCormack's recordings receive with this reissue the wonderful presentation they so richly deserve. Many many thanks to the label and Mr. Marston who made it possible.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2000-01-27

This along with Vol. 1 is simply the best McCormack transfers available from this period. The master of the trade, Ward Marston has outdone himself this time. Waiting for Vols. 3,4,5!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking music and artistry.......2007-03-16

Hearing these superb performances of this glorious music is a truly wonderful experience. The Shostakovich cycle from Jewish folk poetry is simply stunning and these grest artists (Dolukhanova particularly) bring out every nuance and emotional colour of these great songs. And having the great man himself at the piano is just the icing on this glorious Russian cake. This recordin shows you what singing and songs are all about.
